Airport extreme wired user limit

I understand that the Airport Extreme has a 50 user limit.  Is this limited to just the wireless clients, or does this include connections over the lan (wired)?
Thanks in advance.

Good question, because like similar questions, you will probably get more than one answere here.

  • Airport Extreme wired network can't assign IP address, but wireless works

    *Problem details:*
We have three computers intermittently on, wired into the ethernet LAN managed by the Airport Extreme.
We have a few more computers that connect to the wireless network managed by the same Airport Extreme.
As far as I know, no fancy settings hijinks have been attempted. I manage the router, and I only plugged the Airport into the cable modem and connected all the wires to the computers. The WiFi setup went a similar way -- I just turned it on and it sorted itself out. This was eight months ago, mind you -- everything has been going quite well up until this weekend.
But! I got home from a trip this weekend to discover that all the machines that connected over the wired network could no longer get a connection to the internet. Any machine connected over the wireless network, however, was working just fine. Indeed, my macbook pros couldn't even see the Airport Extreme when I turned off their WiFi, connected them over Ethernet and opened the Airport Extreme configuration app!
The wired machines complain that they have a self-assigned IP address. Sometimes, after resetting everything, they look like everything's fine for a moment. Like I said, ordinarily my macbook pro does not even recognize the router over the wired network. However, after reverting to factory defaults and restarting the Airport, the laptop did see it (until a few minutes went by and it realized something was wrong).
I figured that renewing my DHCP lease would fix this problem, but it did not. Nor did turning off Passive FTP Mode (PASV) under Proxies in the Network configuration pane.
I have tried resetting the router to factory defaults, power cycling the modem and router in various configurations, etc. but nothing has worked. In addition, I have verified that connecting any machine to the ethernet directly from the modem will work, so the problem is definitely being introduced by the Airport Extreme.
So I guess my question is: what do I have to poke to return everything to normal? I'd like working wired and wireless networks again.
    *Some last few details:*
The Airport is running 7.5.2, but downgrading to 7.4.2 produced no tangible difference.
I have an Ubee D3.0 modem. All lights are green and blinky except the DS light, which is solid amber (and it is green when the modem is wired directly to one of my computers -- it's only amber when connected to the Airport).
Some of the machines that can't connect to the wired network are PCs, so it's not just an OSX thing.
My roommate's XBOX 360 can connect to the internet over the wired port. It doesn't have WiFi, so I'm pretty sure there's no way it could be fooling me.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can muster.
    EDIT FOR APOLOGIES:
I didn't realize I was posting this in the "Airport for Windows" section. While a Windows computer's connection is a concern, I would much rather get my Macs online and deal with that first. I can't figure out how to move the message myself.

    *An update:*
Several days later, this issue seems to have fixed itself. I suspect there may have been Funny Business on my ISP's end (but then again, it's an ISP).

  • Airport Extreme wired or wirelessly  ?

    Hi,
I have an Airport Extreme (AE) that is connected to my iMac G5 by an ethernet cable. AE is also connected to my cable modem and a laser printer.
I connected a USB drive to the AE. Does the drive communicate to my iMac by the ethernet cable or wirelessly ?
    Thanks in advance.

    {quote} You wrote: ... provided that the AirPort Extreme is creating a wireless network and you have AirPort turned on at your iMac.{quote}
... only if I want to create a wireless link between my AE and my iMac. As for the wired connection, the ethernet cable is the only condition required.
    Is my understanding right ?
Bob is correct, but to be completely accurate in Network Preferences > Show "Network Port Configurations", Built-in Ethernet should precede AirPort in the ordered list. That way, if both connections are available, your iMac will give preference to Ethernet over a potentially slower Airport connection.
The iMac constantly attempts to use any available port, but it uses only one at a time.

  • Devices not connecting through Airport extreme wired connection

    Hi
I just got an Airport extreme to use as an extention of my existing network, and to plug some devices in so that they can connect to the internet for updates (Sony Blu-ray player, dish network receiver, slingbox)...
my wireless is from a linksys/cisco wireless router (4-port) wrt310n, that is connected to my cable modem. The airport is set and has the green light showing. The blu-ray player and dishnetwork receiver are plugged into two of the ports. The blu-ray player says it can't connect to the internet. The dish network receiver says it is connected, giving ip address/submask, etc.
If I take my macbook pro and turn off wireless and plug into the airport it will not connect to the internet.
What have I not done to allow wired connection to the airport extreme to connect to the net?
    thanks
    David

Thanks for the clarification of your setup.
Unfortunately, the bottom line here is that this is not going to work.
The ethernet ports on the Extreme will only be active if you configure the AirPort Extreme to "extend a wireless network". But, it can only "extend" a wireless network from another Apple router. It's not compatible for this purpose with your Cisco router or any other manufacturer's router.
If you are unable to connect the AirPort Extreme to your router using an ethernet cable, you might want to take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.
I should clarify that if you connect the Cisco and AirPort Extreme using ethernet, you would not use the "extend" setting on the AirPort Extreme. This is only used if the device is connecting to another Apple router.

  • 3 x Airport Extreme, 50+ users, lots of downtime and LinkSys RV0041

I have two base stations upstairs that have 50+ users on them daily. Every morning when I come in I have to power cycle both base stations in order to get them to work (I have had them both replaced, same problem). I have one Airport downstairs that has the same problem, though not so often. We have no Wireless phones or other wireless devices in the office (Other than Cellular phones and BlackBerry)
Another thing I want to do is have them be able to automatically switch to the closest or best signal airport (As depending where you are upstairs, depends on your signal)
All 3 are connected to our LinkSys RV0041. In the DHCP portion of the router, I have added the MAC addresses (Airport ID) and the Static IP's I have assigned each Base Station. I also have a couple hard wired machines with Static IPs that are added into this list as well.
Each Base Station is setup with Static IP's (192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.4) with all the proper TCP/IP information (Subnet, Router and DNS).
Under Network, I have it set to Distribute IP addresses, and share a range of IP Addresses with a 16 Hour Lease.
The start and ending IPs that I have setup are:
    192.168.1.5 - 192.168.1.120
    192.168.1.121 - 162.168.1.214
    192.168.1.215 - 192.168.1.254
There is no port mapping, no access control and no WDS setup on any of them. They are all password Protected with 128 WEP.
We have all Apple laptops (Mainly iBooks) and they are setup using DHCP. OS Ranges from 10.3-10.4 (Nothing below 10.3).
Sometimes one of the two base stations upstairs will stop working mid-day, forcing everybody onto one base station which slows everything to a crawl, I need to go up and reset the offending base to clear the jam.
I am looking for a solution to these problems as fast as possible before I start looking for other wireless solutions. This is really starting to make me angry that they cannot stay running for more than 24 hours (My base station at home works fine), but I cannot think of anything that I am doing wrong here (Though I do not claim to be a network specialist by any means.
Any and all input into this is appreciated, especially if you are a network specialist!
    G5 1.8GHz DP Mac OS X (10.4.2)
    G5 1.8GHz DP Mac OS X (10.4.2)

Sometimes one of the two base stations upstairs will stop working mid-day
When you say "stop working" what stops working:
    a) the wireless
    b) the IP distribution - can't get an IP address
    c) none of the above, but connection fails
I am wondering if it is a IP address lease issue, in that the AEBS runs out of IP addresses to assign and therefore stops assigning IP addresses.
On my networks (which are nowhere as near as big) I leave the IP address assignation to the router and just use the AEBS as access points with Distribute IP addresses UNchecked.

  • Airport Extreme- PC users cannot connect to security enabled Wifi

I have an Airport Express and have setup a security enabled Wifi network.  It works perfectly for me, but my PC user roomates cannot access it.  I don't know much about the difference between WPA and other settings, so maybe I need to change the security.  Please help. Thanks!

    DrVenture:
Thank you. Yes, this did indeed work. The MacBook now connects just fine. I had one moment of panic when the Vista laptop referred to it as a "security key" rather than a passphrase / password, but I tried it anyway and that worked just fine too. So I'm happy again.
Any idea why WEP doesn't work this time?
    Thank you for your help.

  • Airport Extreme wired "n"

If you were to operate the new extreme in just the 5Ghz wireless setting range, so only newer hardware could access it, and say you were running an older piece of hardware without wireless "n" but it was wired to a port on the extreme. Would this even be possible to run a Mac Mini? Do wired computers hooked up to the extreme need to have up to date hardware? Would this affect performance, if it is possible to run (drop down performance a little)?
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

That's correct, and thank you for pointing that out.
However, that still doesn't impact the wireless
performance which was the Originator's concern.
Not really. This is quoting the originator's posting:
"... it was *wired* to a port on the extreme."
He didn't say wireless. He said wired. My comments stands as the one relevant, as there is impact on the speed of wired devices. Sorry. For example, I have a wired Infrant ReadyNAS+ Terabyte server which support 1Gbit speeds, but is downgraded to 100Mbit when connected to the AEBSn.

  • Airport extreme wired AND wireless at the same time?

Very sorry for this newbie question. Can i have my iMac wired to my computer with ethernet and wireless at the same time?
If so, what ports to i plug what into?
My guess is modem-wan port on extreme and a cable going wired from the ethernet port on the extreme to the iMac?
Do i need to do any configuring?
    Thanks!

The operatibe word here is EXPRESS
To the best of my knowledge the ethernet port on the express is for ethernet IN not out
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/AirPortExpressSetupGuide.pdf The pertinent diagrams are like page 20 - 25
Now you can actually do what you are talking about with an extreme.. an extreme can, in theorey operate as an remote/relay taking incoming signal giving you one - four out bound ethernet ports
that info can be found in the manual on setting up a WDS
the only thing to remember is .. the weakest leg controls.. if your wireless signal to the relay is poor. any thing using the relay for access will also be poor
I have found out the hard way about that
hey you can get good price on bulk cat 5

  • Airport Extreme wired AND extend network - Need Input

I just bought 2 Air Port Extreme units (the latest 5th generation).  I'd like to use them in the following configuration:
    1.  Unit 1 connected to my cable modem, providing wireless service and wired to a switch which distributes the connectivity to a few other places in my house via ethernet cable.
    2.  Unit 2 on the opposite side of the house, extending the wireless signal from Unit 1, and hardwired to the ethernet in the house.  Then several other items plugged into Unit 2 for connectivity.
Problem is, I seem to have 1 of 2 choices:
    1.  Configure Unit 2 in bridge mode.  Hardwire to network works and connectivity works, but there is no wireless turned on, hence no wireless extension.
    2.  Configure Unit 2 to Extend Network.  Wireless is extended, and works fine.  Items can be plugged into Unit 2 and get connectivity, but I cannot connect Unit 2 to the wired network.
Am I right that I can't get what I want - Unit 2 wired into the internal ethernet network AND extending the wireless network from Unit 1?

Connect them in a "Roaming" network which is the best wireless network available.
Roaming Network (Ethernet-connected Wi-Fi base stations)
For 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations, creating a roaming network is by far the best choice. This will provide the best throughput between the base stations and your Wi-Fi devices.
This set up requires that your Wi-Fi base stations are connected via Ethernet.
The primary base station provides DHCP Services, while the extended base station will be configured to use bridge mode.
All Wi-Fi base stations within the roaming network should use the same passwords, security type (Open/WEP/WPA), and network name (SSID).
These would all use the same "Create a wireless network", same password, same network name, same security, etc.....
Sounds like you can do this with all the cables you have througout the house....
You would not use "Join", "Extend", or "Bridge"..... You would choose "Create a wireless network" on all the base stations.......

  • "No Internet Connection" via AirPort Extreme bridged to Time Capsule

    Hello,
We have a fairly large and odd home network consisting of a Comcast cable modem connected to a Netgear router, a Time Capsule wired to that one floor down (serving up WiFi and DHCP), and a new AirPort Extreme wired one floor below that, extending the WiFi network of the Time Capsule and set to bridge mode.
On one MacBook Pro (and possibly others, haven't had them available to test yet), trying to connect to WiFi while downstairs (i.e. to the AirPort Extreme) yields a strong wireless connection, but "no Internet connection"; checking via network diagnostics or the Network panel reveals that the MacBook Pro has no IP address. This seems odd, as it happens even if the connection is first made on the 2nd floor to the Time Capsule, where a valid IP is retrieved, and then carried downstairs; even though the same IP address should be valid, the laptop's WiFi menubar icon starts cycling again and eventually shows the "!" and reports no Internet connection.  Checking the Network panel reveals no IP address via DHCP.  However, if I let it sit for a minute or two, the IP address comes back (the same one!) and all is well, at least for a while.
I've tried switching to a manually-assigned static IP as a workaround, and that works perfectly well, but I'd like to get DHCP working properly if I can, for convenience's sake. Is there any reason why I should be having trouble with getting DHCP from the Time Capsule via the AirPort Extreme?

Actually, yeah, my predecessor explained that he was running DHCP on the Time Capsule instead of the Netgear because he hadn't needed DHCP prior to the adding of a WiFi point (all other nodes were on Ethernet), so it had always been turned off on the Netgear. But your suggestion makes a lot more sense, of course, so I've put the Time Capsule into bridge mode as well and started the DHCP server on the Netgear. Seems to be working with my iPhone, though that was always working okay. I won't have access to the laptop to test it until later this afternoon, but I have high hopes.
    Thank you!

  • 5th Gen Airport Extreme, XBox360 and Windows Media Center

Hi there. A similar question was posted in August 2011, but the resolution was apparently to return the 5th Gen Airport Extreme in favor of a 4th Gen Airport Extreme. Not really a solution.  Here's the setup:
    Upstairs
    2nd Gen Airport Extreme  --- (wired) --- XBox 360
    {wireless signal)
    downstairs
Cable connection --- (wired) --- 5th Gen Airport Extreme --- (wired) --- Win 7 PC with Windows Media Player
Wireless network is set up as 802.11n (no b/g)
Xbox can see the Intenet and XBL just fine. And on the  Win 7 PC I have no problem setting up the Xbox as an extender.  But when I'm on the Xbox, the Media Center app is unusably slow. Like minutes to connect and I can't even get to a menu.
What can I do? Let me know what information is useful and I'll gladly provide it. Thanks.

I have Windows 7 laptop and it just can't seem to detect my HDD via the Airport Extreme wired through a powered hub. If I connect HDD directly to my laptop it can see the files.

of course there is an easy way, however, it entails erasing all data on the drive. do you have access to a spare, "temporary", drive ?

  • Using a hard drive on airport extreme

I fixed my quandry with gaining wifi access to my airport extreme while using my laptop. But now I have a new question. Now that I have access for laptop (connected via wifi), and access for my desktop (connected via ethernet). How do I get my laptop to recognize the hard drive I have connected to the airport extreme? My desktop recognizes it, I went into the file sharing option and enabled file sharing and i want to be able to "read & write" from my laptop so I made that option available also. I also "checked" the "share disks over WAN".
What else am I mising and or what else do I need to do to have the hard drive accessable through my laptop? (Which by the way is an old sony vgn-fs550, running windows xp)

Working from memory here, 3+ years since I've used a PC. You will need the device name for the AirPort Extreme, device password and IP address of the AirPort Extreme on your network. For example, in the illustration below the IP address of the AirPort Extreme is 10.0.1.1 and the name of the AirPort Extreme is AirPort Extreme
    My Computer
    Tools
    Map Network Drive
    DriveZ:
    Folder
    \\10.0.1.1\AirPort Extreme
    Finish
User Name = Your name or virtually anything should work
Password is the device password for your AirPort Extreme
This will get you close. One of the PC guys may need to tweak this.
