Airport extreme won't work with usb drive

I bought a USB hard drive and formated OSX extended journaled on my MBP.  I plug it into my Airport Extreme and the AE will not recognize that a drive has been connected?  If I plug it back into my MBP there is no problem.. it works.. but the AE does not recognize its existance.
I've seen many others online who've had the same problem...  some have said plugging a powered USB hub into the AE and then adding your drive to the hub works.. but this seems like a rediculous work-around.
Does anyone know WHY this is happening?  Very frustrated that the Airport Extreme does not JUST WORK.
Tim

We understand that the drive works if you plug it into your Mac.
Please list each and every step that you are performing when you now attempt to connect the drive to the AirPort Extreme.
Where are you expecting to "see" the drive on your Mac?

  • Airport Extreme won't work with windows computer?

I can't get airport extreme to work with my other computer which is a windows machine. The windows machine can't find the network address. Sometime it does find an address and appears to be connected, however I cannot connect to the internet with that machine. My Mac does work and connect to the internet. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

I have a toshiba laptop and it works prefectly with a conceptronic usb card. But you must set up the Base Station only with the default options. I mean that you can not hide the SSID, or make an access control with Airport Extreme. You only set up the default options and it works perfectly. When I try to place an access control or hide the network then it doesn´t work and wait an ip as you say in your post.
If you want to connect from Windows to the Base Station you need to close your firewall and no other cable into the Airport Extreme, only the cable that you are connecting to access the Base Station. And it will work.

  • Airport extreme won't work with Optimum cable

Bresnan Cable just switched to Optimum.  My internet no longer works using Airport Extreme.  Cable is working as is wireless.  Optimum support says it has something to do with external versus internal IP addresses and weather my Airport Extreme was configured as a switch or router?

  • AirPort Extreme Won't Work With My DSL???

I just switched back to Mac after being in the PC world for many years. I just couldn't take it anymore. So, I bought a 24" 2.8 GHz iMac. Wow, what a great machine. I can't believe what tis can do when compared to the original Apple computer I used many years ago.
One reason I switched back was the "easy plug and play" promise. Right now that promise is a little tarnished. My when I plug in my AirStream 5100 Ethernet ADSL modem into my Airport Extreme all I get is a blinking yellow light. Yes, the AirStream does work with the iMac when I plug it into the Ethernet plug on the back of the iMac. My ISP stepped me through the needed steps because it wasn't "plug and play" either. I'm at a loss here. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong or steps to solve the problem? Thanks.

Does your ISP require PPPoE? If so you will need to configure the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to connect via PPPoE. You would also configure your iMac to NOT use PPPoE.
Another possibility is that your ISP records the MAC (Ethernet hardware) address of allowed devices. If they do this they could have the MAC address of your iMac on record and not allowing the AEBS to connect. If this is the scenario, you will need to have your ISP switch the allowed MAC address to the AEBS's WAN port MAC address.

  • Airport Extreme won't work with modem.

Either I have internet access but no wifi and with blinking amber light, or I have the green light on the Airport Extreme but no internet. This is the first time this problem has cropped up; all previous modems (linksys etc) had absolutely no problems (except age).  Setup: I have Mac, Macbook Pro, iPad, iPhone 5S. Tried to set up AE both with cable to Mac, and without (using wifi). No go. Location is Manila, Philippines. Cable internet provider is Skycable. Can someone help me with a step-by-step instruction? By the way, the Version is 7.3, I think.

I am not sure how your cable company works.. but they supply two kinds of modems.. pure modem type where you must plug in a router.. and a device which is combined modem and router.. it will mostly have 4 ethernet ports.. the pure kind will only have one (maybe second one for TV).
The actual model number of the modem may help.
The setup is as follows.. pure modem .. the AE must be setup in router mode.. ie on the network tab it shows DHCP and NAT.
On the internet tab it will be set for DHCP.. and you will then need to make sure the modem is passing you the public IP.. to do that you must power cycle the cable modem.. turn it off for 20min and then start up again.. with the AE started up 2min later.
If 20min is still not long enough try 1hr or overnight.. or ring your ISP and ask for the IP to be reset.
    Setup for modem gateway.
The AE must be in bridge mode.
All routing is controlled by the modem and the AE is working as wireless and switch only. This is the correct method.. you can turn off wireless in the gateway or configure both to work.
In both cases the AE must be plugged by ethernet into the main modem.. WAN AE to LAN modem.

  • Airport Extreme won't work with non apple products?

this is a recent problem after years on working ok.

You have not given us enough info to say anything. you haven't asked a question.
AE work fine as AP with non-apple clients.
I have multiple phones and wireless devices from numerous brands working with AE and TC.
What you might find is that naming of the AE has become more of a problem.. so you need to use SMB naming.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric, for the AE itself and the wireless SSID.
You might also find the latest firmware upgrade did nobody any good. If your AE is the flat one, go back to 7.6.1 which IMHO works better.
If your AE is old it could be just faulty.. it might need replacement.
If you want to do things like wireless extend, then there are huge issues with mixing apple and non-apple wireless routers.. but that is not new.. it has been an issues since Apple routers came out.

The Utility transferred all of the AE's settings, so I still have to change the password, which leaves me with only 2 other questions, I think:
    1)  I assume it's just a matter of using the Utility, entering a stronger password and checking for it to be remembered in Keychain Access.  But do I have to  change the password for each individual unit-- the TC, the Extreme and both Expresses-- or will changing it just for the TC alone work for the entire network?
Resetting the password you will need to do for each device... the utility cannot even see those old units.
So you will have to do it for each one.. think it through.. because as you change passwords the others will lose connection.. so start from the express which are wireless extending .. change those first.. and go back up the chain.. as each one changes it will drop off the network.. until you reach extreme and change that. Then you might need to reboot the whole network to get everything talking again. If something goes wrong.. just pluck that one out of the mix and plug in ethernet.. reset and redo the setup. That is my preferred method anyway.. do everything in isolation one by one. By ethernet and then nothing goes wrong.
    2)  Who's the treasonous SOB who spilled the beans to you about the ICBM in my back yard?!?
    N.Korean hackers.
[Edit] Whoops-- one more question:  I want to partition the TC's disk, but Disk Utility doesn't see it.  What do I need to do?
You cannot partition a network disk. And apple provided no tools for it in the TC itself. You can pull the disk out and partition it but that voids your warranty. (although done with care who is to know).
    Look at Q3 here.

Mixing TM and data on the TC is worth planning carefully. They don't necessarily sit happily together.

  • Will my airport extreme 2nd generation work with docsis 3.0 cable modems?

Will my airport extreme 2nd Gen work with docsis 3.0 cable modems?

    RRoger, everything is working fine.
So, what is the actual problem here?  You are now wondering if the Vonage can handle the speed from the modem? Is that the "problem" after all this discussion?
now I am wondering if my current setup will allow me to get docsis 3.0 speeds.
What speed is your Internet provider delivering to you?
The AirPort Express uses 100 Mbps Ethernet ports, so it will handle up to 100 Mbps. We have already told you that.
Vonage likely does the same. The answer is almost certainly "yes" .......both the Vonage and AirPort will handle the speed from the modem.
If you want to double check this, please provide the model number of the Vonage,  and we will try to look up the specifications for the device. If you have documentation there with specifications for the Vonage device, check to see if the Ethernet ports are listed as 10/100. This is standard with almost all devices, with some of them handling even higher speeds 10/100/1000.
Chances are, your network will handle a lot more speed than your service provider is supplying to you. So, the "choke" point on your network may very well be your service provider and modem......not the Vonage and AirPort.

  • AirPort Express won't work with 7.0.2

Everything was fine til I bought a new Shuffle. It made me upgrade to 7.0.2, now my Airport Express won't work. I have firmware 6.2 and just uploaded all of the newest updates from apple.com for it (AX). The security is off on my network and the AX is connected with a green light. Still no option to choose my home stereo which is hooked up to the AX. HELP! I have spent all day trying to get this to work!!!!

My Airport Express when it is setup to extend my network while plugged into Ethernet will Create a network under settings
This is the correct setting to "extend" the network using an Ethernet connection. Technically, this is called a "roaming" network.
If I change this to Extend A Network it doesn't work properly.
This is because "Extend a wireless network" is used only when AirPort devices communicate with each other using wireless only......not Ethernet.
It would help if Apple used settings like "Extend a network using Ethernet" and "Extend a network using wireless only".....but they don't.
The AirPort Extreme will need to be configured as the main router if you want it to provide a Guest Network. It cannot do this if it is configured in Bridge Mode.

  • Canon MP500 connected to AirPort Extreme won't communicate with my desktop

My Canon Pixma MP500 (which we really like) is connected to my new AirPort Extreme Base station via the USB port. My PC is attached via network cable to the base station. I have a MacBook. When printing to my printer from my PC, the printer doesn't communicate back to the PC that it is printing. Plus, I have lost the ability to determine the ink levels. I'm sure all of this is tied to bidirectional communication between the printer and the computer. Both of my computers (desktop PC and MacBook) print to the printer with no problem, but I have lost the other features. I can't scan on my printer now with the MP Navigator software. For example, when I print from the pc, there is an error message that the printer is not available, even though it prints ok.
Is there any way to leave the connection the way it is and to modify the AirPort Utility software to allow the bidirectional communication with the printer? Any other advice? I bought the AirPort Extreme base station to have printing from my MacBook, now I think I have mis-spent the money.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
interestingly enough I have the very same problem with a Canon MP830. My Windows PC and MacBook Pro running XP as well will happily print but there is no feedback.
But I also had this problem with different non-Apple access points with integrated print server. So this seems not to be a special Airport Extreme problem.
Canon support told me to buy a Silex print server.
    Hope someone can resolve this.
    Regards,
    Wolfgang

  • Older model Airport Express won't work with Mountain Lion Airport Utility

just upgraded to Mountain Lion and noticed that of my network of three airport expresses connected to various stereo speaker systems throughout the house, one of the older models won't work with the supplied version of Airport Utility (v 6.1). Here is the message it gives in the utility when I attempt to select this particular Airport Express:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
Well, I go to download v 5.6 and none of the versions available will install on Mountain Lion! (even the version for Lion) Catch 22.
Any resolution to this (other than having to go out and buy a newer version Airport Express)?

  • IPod Mini works with FireWire, won't work with USB

    This one's frustrating.
I have a generic P4 3.2Ghz PC running XP Pro SP2. It used to work fine with my iPod Mini. I then had some problems with usb drives, including its internal drives and the iPod. Eventually I bought the USB/Firewire cable, and all has been fine synching over Firewire since then.
I've now bought my wife a Nano, and I wanted to check (before she opens it) whether the USB connection to my mini would work (nanos not working with Firewire). Nope. If I connect with Firewire, it shows up as a disk in Windows, and in iTunes. If I connect with USB, it shows up as a disk in Windows, but iTunes can't see it.
I've Reset the iPod, Rebooted the PC (many times throughout the process), uninstalled and Reinstalled iTunes and the iPod software (freshly downloaded from Apple). Tried all the USB connections on the box, and another cable.
Any practical suggestions? If her birthday present doesn't work, there will be sarcasm
    PC Windows XP Pro

    I HATE WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So it now works. I "just" had to uninstall the "PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller" in Device Manager. Plugged the iPod straight back in, and it appeared in iTunes.
Now to see if I have to do this every time I synch over USB - annoying as I'm saving up for a 6G (whatever and whenever it turns out to be).
Thanks for your time anyone who's read this.

  • Airport Extreme won't connect with my cable modem (Time Warner)

OK, I'm tired of staring at a blinking amber light. I'm reaching out to anyone out there who's had this problem. I've got everything connected right, the software loaded, the connections set on my laptop (Macbok Pro). But still my Airport Extreme won't connect to the Internet. I've tried different cables, rebooting both my modem and my Airport. For the record, I've had a Mac IT guy from my advertising agency come by my house and make sure that everything's installed and hooked up right. But it still keeps saying that my IP address is invalid, even though I can connect (wired) using the modem.
I suspect I'll just have to take it to the Genius Bar or something. But anybody got any ideas? I really want to join the 'n' generation....

Did you power off the cable modem when switching the Ethernet connection from laptop to AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)? This is usually required.

  • Airport Extreme won't recognize external hard drive

    Hi everyone,
I've searched and search and tried everything, but my airport extreme refuses to recognize my external harddrive. I'm wanting to set it up so my time machine so it will back up automatically - basically a poor student's version of a time capsule. Please - I'm getting desperate - nothing I've found on-line has helped. Thanks!!!

I have just completed hooking up my airport extreme to my seagate external drive. I have the newer version mb763lla airport. After hooking everything up, I created a homebase network, and Initially my two windows computers would not recognize the drive, in my computer. I plugged a usb jump drive in to the router to check if the router required drives to be formatted fat32 and the jump drive worked, jump drives are formatted to fat32, so I knew my problem was the format of external drive. Then I knew I needed to format my drive to fat32, so I looked around the internet trying to find the best way to do so. What I discovered is that if you go to the website of your external drive, they generally have software to help you format your drive. Seagate has discwizard, and I noticed Western Digital has some too. I choose to format my drive with two partitions one fat32 and one ntfs. I was under the impression from some of the websites I visited that I would have problems with vista & fat32, so I used a windows xp computer to run the format software from seagate. I plugged the usb external 320gb freeagent seagate hard drive directly into the xp computer, to format it. After running the software I restarted my computer, and the drive worked, and I could now find the drive on both my xp and my vista computers. It did assign different drives, on the xp the drive is called y: on the vista the drive is called z: . Both computers can write or read to the fat32 partition of the drive.

  • Airport extreme card not working with leopard / G5

I just upgraded my PowerMac to leopard (G5 dual 1.8, 3 gigs of ram, 250 GB HD). I bought it new in December 2004 from apple. Previously I had been using a USB adapter to connect to my wireless internet at home (Linksys WRT54G). This device does not support leopard so I got an airport extreme card from gainsaver.com.
The Airport extreme card is configured properly as far as I know but it will only connect to my network for about 5 seconds then it drops. The USB adapter worked perfectly in the same spot and my macbook right next to it works fine as well.
    1. Could it be a bad Airport extreme card?
    2. Is this a known issue? And possibly be resolved with the 10.5.2 update?
It is a fresh Leopard install with no updates as I can not connect it to the internet to get them. Any help would be very much appreciated.
