Airport Hardware disappeared

All of a sudden, my Airport could not find any wireless networks. I turned it on and off. Nothing happened. Reset my router, but that did nothing. So i restarted my computer and now that Airport card is gone.
Has anybody else had this happen?
I figure it might be bad hardware and need to be replaced, just owndering if anyone has come accross this.

Have you had any luck with this? I have been having a ton of crashes on my new (< 14 days old) MBP. No kernel panics as described in some of the other threads, just a hard lock-up of all applications (force-quit doesn't work, no mouse movement or keyboard response at all - the DVD drive won't even suck in a new disc).
This happens even after I did an 'erase & install' of OSX 10.4.8 off of the installation media - still no joy.
4 times and counting this morning in only 2 hours of using the laptop. I think thats some kind of a record, even when compared against a windows box.
Occasionally when this happens the machine will soft-restart after 20-30 seconds, and if that happens then the mac reports that there is no airport hardware present.
The diagnostics off of DVD1 of the install set does not report the airport - ever. Shows no other problems.
Apple support folks say I will most likely have to get the airport card replaced at the repair depot.
Anybody else having problems this severe?
-bp
Ran the hardware test off dvd1, and the card was
still not showing up. even did the exteneded test.
Funny enough, after restarting the computer, the card
was present.
I will keep an eye on it for the next few days to see
if it is acting up again.

  • New G5 - Airport Hardware "disappeared"

I bot a new IMac G5, it was working fine running under Tiger, I also used the setup assistant to transfer files and settings from my Powerbook G4 to the new IMac. My airport was working fine and I had a solid network connection on my new IMAC for 24 hours.
I hit software update and downloaded suggested updates and now my internet connection doesnt work. When I try to use Internet Connect or the Airport assistant it says I have no hardware, no wireless card. What coiuld have happened?
It was definitely looking for bluetooth when I finished the downloads. I had to unplug and plug in my Mouse to get it to quit looking for a wireless mouse.
Please help, this is super frustrating. Should I hook back up my Powerbook and try to reload some old settings? Can I reverse the downloads? How can it simply lose the hardware?

I restarted and the darned thing worked. Will keep my fingers crossed it continues to work.

  • Missing Airport Hardware

I can't find airport hardware anymore. Selection does not appear in Network selection. Icon does not appear on panel. It totally disappeared from the laptop. Help!

Ditto. In fact I have replaced the Extreme Airport Card 3 times to no avail and I can tell you that finding the right card and installing it is NOT easy! You have to use the machine serial number to match the proper card. The placement of the ribbon cable can vary depending on which model you have. Furthermore, getting the ribbon cable back into position is the hardest part of the job. There is an indentation on the case that gets in the way of sliding the cable back into position and required a slight lift on the motherboard to get it through. Be careful that you do not lift it too much. The job requires delicate work with extremely small screws. Still don't show airport hardware after the third replacement. Everything else still works after opening the machine for the fourth time!
    Good luck.

  • Airport Extreme -  disappear from the system!

    Hi all!
I have this imac intel 20' with a Airport Extreme card.
Today when i turn the mac on the Airport has disappear!
    On the console:
2006-09-12 16:07:46.563 SystemUIServer[224] AirPortExtra: no card found, exiting
I try to erase the interface profile on the Networking/System Preferences and reboot the mac, but still no Airport!
    Thanks in advance.

If your Mighty Mouse isn't working then the mouse options in the preference pane will not show up. You'll only see (like you said: keyboard, trackpad and bluetooth). If you have a working mouse plugged in, it will activate the Mouse preference and you will no longer see the trackpad option. That particular preference pane is dependent on the hardware that is present.
Sounds like it might be time for a new Mighty Mouse - a perfect time to spring for the wireless one
EDIT: I misread your first sentence and didn't realize that it stopped working after the 10.4.7 update. Yes, I would try to reinstall the software. But my original response (save for the "spring for a new one" segment) still applies.

  • Airport card disappears in OS9?

    Hello all
I just acquired a G4 cube.  It has 640MB RAM (more is on order) and a stock 16MB video card (got a new one on the way...) and the Airport card.  I just did a clean install of OS 9, and updated to 9.2.2.   The entire system, including the Airport card works flawlessly under Tiger (I'm using it to type this message), but the Airport card disappears in OS 9.  On initial boot in OS 9, the Airport card will show up, with four "bars" of signal in the control strip, showing it is connected to my home network (which is temporarily secured with WEP, so it will play nice with OS 9 - I've also tried it with an unsecured network).  However, whenever I try to actually use the network (software update, web browsing, whatever), the bars go blank, then the Airport icon greys out and disappears.  I click on it and get the message "there is no Airport card installed".  Occasionally, it gives me a number "3278" and nothing else.
I don't know if this is related, but OS 9 feels a LOT slower than it should on this G4.  Tiger runs a lot smoother and faster, yet there is considerable mouse lag when dragging the pointer across the screen, and a definite lag when opening applications or documents in OS 9.
Any ideas on why I can see my Airport card in X and not in OS 9?
    thanks,
    Rich

    OK, more weirdness...
Before I received our last message, I got a strange error - I came back to the computer and there was an error box saying something like "This computer can not go to sleep because it is missing some of the system software.  Please reinstall the system software.".  Gulp!    Sounds like a corrupted OS install...so, I wiped the drive.  I repartitioned it (120GB WD drive - 4096MB for OS 9, the rest for X) and formatted it using the OS 9 disk utility software.  I then booted from the "Software Install" disk and let 'er rip.  I wound up with an OS 9.1 partition...and...all of the original Airport card problems were back!!!   I tried to put the machine to sleep, and got the above error again.
So I reformatted again, and this time used the "PowerMac G4 Cube System Restore" disk, which reset everything to factory defaults from a disk image.  Again....no Airport, and no sleeping due to "missing system software".   What in the name of the Force is going on here...?
I am now running extended Apple Hardware Tests and will report back.
Of course, everything works perfectly in OS X, so I'll probably just let it live in Tiger land...but this is seriously challenging my Mac geek cred...LOL
And just a side note - OS 9 installs SO much more quickly than X!   I've been able to completely reinstall twice now in rather little time!

  • Airport signal disappears when I use our cordless phone

Hi. I am running an adelphia premiere high-speed DSL modem into an airport extreme base station, which provides a wireless signal to an i-book and powerbook. I am also running a line from the extreme base station to a Vonage unit, for internet telephone, from which I use a cordless panasonic phone (KX-TG2216). It's a new set-up as we have just moved house. And I'm finding that whenever I use the cordless phone my airport signal disappears (icon goes to grey), and sometimes I even lose my base station network in the popup menu (necessitating finding it again on airport setup assistant). They're just not there... But they come back when I terminate any use of the cordless handset. Is it a hardware compatibility issue? Do I need some kind of firmware patch?
    Any help gratefully received. Thanks!

simonherb, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your cordless phone uses the same 2.4 GHz that is used by the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Therefore it is directly interfering with your wireless network.
You may be able to configure the AEBS to use a channel that works OK even when the telephone is in use.
A better solution is to get a cordless phone that does not operate at 2.4 GHz.

  • Airport icon disappeared from menu bar

For one of my two Users, the Airport icon disappeared from the menu bar. Now I cannot turn Airport on or off. Internet Connect only shows the internal modem. Restarting the computer did not solve the problem.
It has worked well until yesterday, all of a sudden the icon was gone. Airport Admin does work, and it restarts the base station when I change something (I changed the password just to test this). So the hardware is working.
If I log on as a different user, the icon is there, and everything works as normal. It therefore seems to be a set-up problem at one of the users.
I would appreciate any help on this one.
    Thanks in advance,
    Maarten

    Maarten,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Go to Apple -> System Preferences -> Network. Select the AirPort Entry from the list of Network Devices, and click the "Configure..." button.
If not already there, navigate to the "AirPort" tab, and check the "Show AirPort status in menu bar" checkbox at the bottom of the window.
This should put it back up there.
Let me know if you need more help.

  • Airport Extreme disappears after waking from sleep.

Here is a strange one for the experts out there...
I recently purchased an Airport Extreme card for my G4 Powermac (FW800). It is the Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.25.8). It installs easy, and it works great. I can connect to my Airport Express with no problem, and to my 2009 MacBook.
The problem occurs after the computer goes to sleep. After I wake it (even if it's only after a minute), the Airport Icon disappears and the Spinning Beach Ball of Death appears over the title bar, and the dock. I can click on windows and move them, but not use them.
If I use the Special Menu and tell the computer to sleep I don't have any problems. I'm using the latest update for Leopard, but this happened with Tiger, too.
    Any thoughts?

I had this problem just recently and seem to have fixed it today. I made the following changes:
I changed security from WPA2 to WPA using the Airport Admin Utility.
I went to the Network Preferences panel and found that the network was still listed as WPA2, so I deleted it.
I then added the WPA network to my preferred network list.
The computer now reconnects automatically after sleep or shutdown.
I don't know whether changing from WPA2 to WPA was necessary. It may be that all you need to do is delete and re-add the network.
    Hope that helps!

  • Airport suddenly disappeared

My husband has one of the older white iMacs, and while we were in our apartment he had the internet connected directly via an Ethernet cable since he had it right next to the cable modem. But now that we've moved into our house, he wants to use the AirPort again to become wireless because we can't get cables up from where the modem is on the first floor to the third floor where he put his iMac. But the AirPort icon disappeared completely from the top menu bar, and he can't find AirPort anywhere on his iMac to get it working again. Has anyone else ever experienced this problem? Will we have to take it to an Apple Store Genius Bar to get it looked at or is there a way we can fix it ourselves? Why would it disappear like that?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you!
    Lisa

    Just ideas.
I've been having the dreaded and unresolved dropouts problem running a "Airport Extreme UFO" and I tried reverting to an earlier firmware version. It failed and my Airport was lost.
I did the 10 second hard reset, but the Airport was still lost. I found it by using the recently released Airport Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow Airports altho my Airport is the later Model A 1034. I was asked to update the firmware, which I did, and then I set up the base station using the Snow/Graphite Admin Utility. I then reverted to using the later Airport Utility 5.3.1 which picked up the settings.
What does this tell us? I don't have a clue.

  • Help!!  Suddenly..no airport hardware found!  Please help!

My 17" powerbook fell and now claims that no airport hardware can be found. I'm thinking the card dislodged or something but how do I re-secure it??
    Please help.

I don't think they do loaners, since I've never been able to get them to do that when I've asked, but you can sometimes ask for a replacement machine if the repairs have been enough that they can't solve the problem. Never wait for them to call you back. I've never gotten a call back. Hold onto a case number and if you need to reach them for any reason call them on the case number. We can't really discuss Apple policy here, though I can certainly tell you what I've experienced.
A loaner would technically be a machine you can borrow while yours is off to repairs. The machine you'd ask for a replacement would be yours to keep, and you'd never get back the original machine. Hence the good reason for a backup so you can restore to the replacement machine.

  • Airport Hardware dissapeared

I own a DualCore 2.3ghz Powermac G5. As most of you know it came with Airport and Bluetooth 2.0 standard.
Today i was transfering some files (via our Airport Network) from our other 1.8ghz G5 to the DC2.3. I was transfering the file by mounting the Hard Drive of the 1.8 on the desktop of the DC2.3. About 15mins into the transfer an error occured and the transfer was stopped. I thought that maybe a restart was needed so i rebooted both of the computers. Upon the 1.8's restart i saw it was working fine and ready to transfer the files. Upon the DC2.3's restart i noticed that it could not connect or even find the 1.8 on our network. So i automatically looked up to the menu bar to check Airport status. The Airpor Status Menulet was gone completely. I went to the Network pane of Sys Prefs and saw that it said the Airport was off. Upon opening the Airport pane of Internet connect it said "No Airport Hardware Found". I looked at the Sys Profiler as well and it says that no Airport hardware is present on my computer....
...Any help or ideas would be much appreiciated. I'm trying to keep from freaking out over here....Thanks in advance.

I had a similar problem with my G5 Quad a couple of months ago. The Airport hardware just dissapeared. The internet settings in system prefs said "no airport card detected" and I of course had one. The answer was a trip to the genius bar at Apple Retail and they replaced the airport card. It's worked fine every since. Hope this helps.

  • Unable to find Airport Hardware

I used my girlfriends MacBook Pro last night before going to sleep. I checked NFL.com and used iChat. Today, she went to use it and it would not connect. I looked....and the computer is no longer recognizing her Airport Card. I went to Internet Connect and it says "No Airport Hardware Found." I opened up the System Profiler, clicked on Airport Card and it says "No information found."
What happened? What can we do to solve this?

No one has any ideas here??

  • Apple Airport Express disappears

    Hello,
I do not think you live in the Bermuda Triangle and it is normal that my Airport Express disappears No, unfortunately not.
I would like to use my AE to stream music, they've also integrated it with the Airport utility into an existing wireless network.
10min long this works well, music will play properly, then "disappear", AE, and I can not in iTunes, select speakers, yet she finds the Airport Utility.
Oddly enough, the pilot light is lit on the AE still green ie actually it should work.
I use a router ASUS RT-N56U and use Windows 7
    Airport Utility software version 5.5.3
    iTunes version 10.5.2.11
p.s. Sorry for my bad english, it comes from Google Translate german-englisch :-)

    See if this doesn't help.

  • Airport Hardware Dissappeared - After iTunes 7.0 and QuickTime 7.1.3

    Hello,
On my powerbook G4, everything has been working great. I did a software update (via wireless connection) and iTunes 7.0 and QuickTime 7.1.3 were prompted. I went ahead with the update and performed the obligitory restart. After this reboot, the airport card hardware is no longer recognized.
In the log file during initiation when an internet connection is attempted, the following message occurs:
Internet Connect: WirelessAirPortDeviceNameCopy(): no AirPort drive found
I have tried many restarts (including a hard restart). I have reset the PRAM, and NVRAM but still nothing. This to me appears to be very much a software issue due to the circumstances. Are there any suggestions on how I may reinstall the airport driver or determine if there is a configuration problem?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    PowerBook G4 15" 1.5Ghz 1.5GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Built in Airport Card

I don't think this is an isolate issue, as I'm having the same problem. After the update my computer is now saying "Airport hardware not found" although I've been using it for almost 2 years now. I fixed it briefly by dragging some folder to the desktop as per advice on this site, but today it did the same thing. I was watching videos on MTV.com when an alert came up saying "Error, you need to restart your computer" and after I did my Airport hardware was "not found" again. Since I haven't dropped the computer and I wouldn't know how to take the card out if I wanted to, I don't think it's a simple issue of the card not being installed/connected properly. I'm open to any suggestions. I have the original disks that came with my computer, but I can't reinstall the software b/c the old software is still on there....

  • Airport hardware has vanished off my system

    Here's the deal:
Yesterday morning I installed 1GB of RAM. There are two slots for RAM on my powerbook so I left the 512MB that was there and installed the 1GB in the second slot (it's directly below the first one). Everything seemed to be going hunky-dorey until I tried to register a product I had purchased and could not access the internet. I went into my network setting to see if the Airport had been turned off, but that was not the case. The Airport hardware has somehow vanished. I'm assuming this happened when I installed the RAM, but I don't quite know how to fix it.

Sorry, my error, I was looking at the General Instructions for a PowerBook G4. Your PowerBook's AirPort card is NOT user accessable, so that's not the problem. Your memory instructions are
linked here - "PowerBook G4 (17-inch): DIY Instructions"
Is your new memory showing in "About This Mac" or in System Profiler's Memory category? Perhaps it didn't fully seat when you installed it. Note the instructions say:
"pushing the card firmly until fully seated."
