Airport has a self-assigning IP address...

Hi. I'm using a high-speed modem provided by my ISP which is connected to a Belkin wireless router. I was connecting perfectly fine with the Airport card in my home up until yesterday when I try to connect, I get an error message "there was an error joining network..etc". Under the system prefs. I get a message that the Airport has a self-assignng IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet. Is there a way to reconfigure/reset the IP address? My other MacBook connects perfectly whereas my new 17" DC2 iMac gives me trouble...any advice??

Try assisnging your new computer a static IP address base the details from the other computer that connects properly (network area in system preferences).
Remember the IP address has to be unique in order to avoid further network issues eg if router is 192.168.1.1 and other computer is 192.168.1.2 then choose 192.168.1.3 or other for the problem computer.

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • "Airport has a self assigned IP address & cannot connect to internet"

Hi, I'd appreciate any insight at all on this...
Apologies in advance for this vast post...!
(but I guess I may as well mention everything I've already tried...)
    BACKGROUND:
I was recently trying to add an Airport Express Base Station to an existing ethernet and wireless network, which has been working flawlessly for 3 years.
(Network consists of an ethernet-connected G4 Dual 1.42 desktop running OS X.3.3, and two wireless-connected iBooks- one a 12" running OS X.3.5, the other a 14" on OS X.4.2).
For various reasons, I've now given up with the Airport Express, but ...
    PROBLEM:
On the wireless 12" iBook- "Safari can't open the page "xxx" because it can't find the server "xxx"- ie, the internet connection is now wonky.(The problem is the same in Firefox, IE, and Camino too).
The fault must be with configuration on this laptop, as the other two machines on this network are still running and connecting normally with no problems at all.
What is the cause of this problem? (IP addresses? DNS server?)
    WHAT I'VE TRIED SO FAR:
    1. First looked at System Preferences --> Network --> Network Status, where I see this;
"Airport is connected to the network "Fritz!Box SL WLAN". Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."
Alongside it an amber button (which is usually green).
    Then according to JohnHuber1's suggestion in Discussions on May 3rd 2006;
"Go to System Preferences --> Network and double click on Airport to open its preferences. Click on theTCP/IP tab and select Configure IvP4: "Using DHCP" and click on Apply Changes to save it."
I tried toggling this (it was already set this way), and then Restarted, but it hasn't helped.
I also tried clicking the 'Renew DHCP lease' button. Also hasn't helped.
    2. Repaired permissions. It hasn't helped.
    3. Read Apple KB article No:106798- 'Troubleshooting "Server could not be found" messages'.
From this article, it seems that
    a) The problem cannot be caused by "an actual loss of internet connection", as the other 2 machines are still connecting fine.
    b) Typing http://17.254.0.91 instead of http://www.apple.com makes no difference, therefore it doesn't APPEAR to be a DNS server problem. (?)
    4. Tried to reconfigure the Airport settings using Network SetUp Assistant.
This allows me to select Airport as my connection method, select the network from the list; but once I've entered the network password and pressed 'continue', it then gives me a dialogue box, saying
"Unable to establish a network connection. Your computer could not connect to the internet. Click OK to go back and change your network settings and try again".
Returning to Network Prefs, I now see a box saying "Your Network Settings have been changed by another application".
I can't seem to get out of that vicious circle.
    5. Opened a fresh Test Account, behaviour is the same here as in the regular user account.
    6. Opened Network Utility, tried to 'Ping' on 17.254.0.91 (Apple site). Then tried to Ping my network router (192.168.178.1), and then also the other 2 computers on the network. Result in each case was "10 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss".
What can I do to fix this problem? I suspect it's some small configuration checkbox in Network preferences which I've inadvertently altered.
But have I got any idea what I've done...?
Sorry for the epic post. But you get the idea...!
    Thanks for your thoughts...
    G4 Dual 1.42, FW800, 2GB RAM, (OSX.3.3), iBook G4 (1.2ghz, 1GB RAM, OSX.3.5)   Mac OS X (10.3.3)   3 int.HDs, 3 Lacie ext.HDs, Logic Pro 6.4, RME Fireface 800.

Hi Grant, thanks for jumping in...
Have you removed the troublesome Airport Express?
Certainly have, that was Step 1 several days ago!
    Are you using encryption?
Yes, I have to enter a password every time I've tried to use Network Set Up Assistant. I'm pretty sure I've got it right- it won't accept anything else.
Have you limited your network to only certain M.A.C. Addresses?
Not as far as I'm aware. Could I have done it inadvertently?
Is the Wireless Router set to allow the connection of slower 802.11b devices like the iBook?
Guess it must be... it worked fine before, and is still ok with the other 14" iBook.
Are you connecting to a Wireless Router and not to another Macintosh computer?
Hmm... I ASSUMED I was connecting to the WLAN router. The G4 desktop has no wireless capability itself, could I still be connecting to that regardless?
Internet access has never been affected in the past by that machine being on or off...
You will not be able to get anywhere until you have an IP address in the same subnet as your Router
(generally high octets the same, last octet different). Can you think of any reason why your Router
should not give you an IP address in this range?
Err... now I'm lost, sorry! What's an octet?
I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out Grant... sorry I'm not really up to speed!
    Cheers, Andy.

  • Cannot connect to internet as Airport "has a self assigned IP address"?

I suddenly cannot connet to wireless internet as the Airport has a "self assigned IP address" whatever that is. I have tried removing other wireless connectons but it makes no difference. I'm trying to use the wireless connection at the hotel I'm stying in..its working fine on this computer. Any suggestions ...PLEASE?
    Thanks

Hmmm... well, not what I was hoping to find b/c that is not really a helpful answer, l.b, but thanks for joining in on the discussion. I too just experienced the same problem. Yesterday I was connected just fine, a little slow, but connecting just the same. I was able to do my banking, browsing & what have ya. Today I get up and have no internet connection and my computer says it Airport has self-assigned an ip address and I cannot connect to the Internet. I haven't done anything different and as I can tell, they haven't done anything different either. My iMAC will not connect, but this piece of poop del mini will as will my iphone4 and all three of my kids' ipod touches. Soooo.... anyone else have a solution b/c I am totally at a loss here. I really need my iMac to connect. Got things to do that I can't do on here.

  • Connectivity Issue: "Airport has a self-assigned ip address..."

I've been using the same wireless network via AT&T with their own wireless modem/router that they provided for the past six months. Never had an issue EVER. Now....suddenly, it says "Airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
OK. I jumped on my girlfriends IBM, it and all the other PC computers in our house work FINE. I can also directly connect to the router via an ethernet cable and connect FINE.
So I open up the router settings in my browser and notice that the IP address the router says my computer has is 192.168.1.100. This is not the IP address my network settings displays when I get a DHCP lease. So... I select "manually" instead of "automatically via DHCP" and type in the IP address the router seems to think my computer is. Now in the "show network status window" it says that "Airport is connected to the network" but I still can't connect to the internet.
This is driving me completely bat **** crazy. Nothing has been changed in the wireless settings on my computer, any other computer in the house, or the router itself. This seems to have happened randomly, after searching all over the internet I can't find any solution that works for me. anyone know what's up?

As you may have gathered, this message appears when the computer has failed to obtain an IP number from the router using DHCP, so it self-assigns a fallback number which, since the router doesn't know it, prevents connection to the internet.
The obvious first step is to turn everything off, and then boot the router and each of the computers, one at a time, so that each should get a new DHCP lease. All the IP numbers should be issued and obtained automatically.

  • I getting airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet

I getting airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet

I have got exactly the same message after we re-configured our router. I was connecting using my iMac wirelessly before hand, but now cannot. Our other PCs can connect wirelessly to the router so it's not the router. I have also tried the firewall solution but that doesn't work either.
I did call Apple Support who said that a full troubleshoot would cost £35 as my computer is older than 90 days (well yes it's been working fine that's why it's over 90 days old, it's only now that it isn't!). He said a trouble shoot didn't guarantee success so I declined his offer to charge me an extortionate amount of money for nothing! He did say that the router needs to be giving the Airport an IP address, but it isn't doing it now. His only suggestion was to turn off the router and turn it back on or power down the iMac. Neither of which help.
    Anyone else had any success?

  • AirPort has the self-assigned IP address .... and will not be able to connect to the Internet., AirPort has the self-assigned IP address ...and will not be able to connect to the Internet.

I came from the U.S to Spain and My laptop will not connect to the internet via airport I keep getting the message above what do I do?

Hi, the one below worked for my case.
I beleive there are different reasons for this problem. In my case, doing try and error, I found a solution for my case (at the ver end of this post). The reason I say this is because I had the same problem and googled the problem for quite a while ... none of the suggested solutions worked for me, although it seems like they worked for others in some cases. I tired taking my computer to different wifi networks (mainly unprotected ... ie no WAP) and alwasy got the same problem. I even took the computer to apple and no luck ... surprisely when I took it to apple it did connect to apple's wifi network in the store, so according to them it was probably some problem with my network ... when I walked out of the store I tried connecting to another open network in the mall and got the same problem ... went back to apple and they tried a few things without any luck (however it would connect to apple's network)
Of all the solutions I read the one that made more sense for me was the one related to keychain access, although in my case I had the problem trying to get into an unprotected network, which at some point was protected.
So this is what I did: among other things I compared the keychain access file with that from another macbook that was working ok, and I noticed that although my wifi network is unprotected there was an entry for it in the keychain access list (maybe from the time that I had the network protected with the deafult config from the router). So I went to network preferences on the computer that had the problem, went to advanced and selected the name of my network (configured without security), and changed it to WAP personnal security, and entered the previous access code from my router --- the same configured in the other mac keychain file ---. This created an entry for my network in the keychain access file, just as it showed in the other macbook. I then went back to network preference and change the configuration of my network back without security. AND NOW it is working, NO MORE SELF ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS.  (remember that I actually I never really changed the configuration of my wifi router to make the network secured ... actually I didn't touch it at all .... well I did before some days ago trying to follow some of the suggested solutions, doing things like power cycle, reset to factory default etc, etc, which never worked)

  • Airport has the self-assigned IP address...

I've read about 100 of these threads online however none of them have solved my problem unfortunatley.
I've had my Macbook for just over 4 months now and it never gave me problems until about 2 weeks ago. I opened up my macbook to find I didn't have an IP addressed given to me, so I couldn't go online. After about 2 days of literally messing about with the settings I didn't understand, it worked and I took no more notice of it. Then, about a week ago, it happened again, this time I tried to make note of what I did but it just started working randomly.
Now it's happened again and I've tried every trick in the book. I've deleted the preference file, I've turned my firewall on and off, I've renewed my DHCP, I've manually entered my IPV4 address but still, no cigar. Is there anything more I can do, I don't want to connect by chance again! I want to fix this once and for all, without reinstalling.

    Have you solved your problem?
When I have this problem at home on my MacBook with Leopard, I simply restart the D-link DI-624 wireless router.
Another writer with the same problem on a university network solved his problem by repairing permissions

Sometimes I have this problem when turning on the MacBook with AirPort turned off, after turning it off during a previous session (to save battery or to cut down on electrosmog). When away from home, a restart with AirPort on usually does the trick.

  • What to do if you can't access a wifi network and showing you message that your airport has a self-assigned IP and cannot be connected to the internet?

    Hi,
i am currently using 10.6.8 snow leopard
i usually access internet through my broadband modem and wifi at home.
i've been using our home wifi network for almost 1 week now (since it's new) and almost everyone at home use it as well.
and im using my broadband everytime i go out.
this last week, i went to a vacation and i use the wifi connection of the hotel where i stay in.
my connection works fine and so i don't use my broadband anymore.
    then i got home..
when i got home..  i tried to connect to our home wifi network again .
like what im doing before, im clicking the airport icon on the top of my desktop,
and since my airport is always on, the next step that im doing is to click the preferred network that i want to join and put the password on it.
this is perfectly working in my macbook before i left.
but now , it's not working to my laptop anymore! i can't connect to it!
after putting the password and hitting the enter, the airport icon at the top will run, however after seconds it showing gray color with exclamation point on it!
the alert is showing : No internet connection
but the network i joined is still checked and showing full signal !
i tried checking my Network under system preferrence and the airport tab in the left corner is showing me a message that
my airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.***.****.** and will not be able to connect to internet!
i don't know what happen and i dont understand why is this happening since everyone at home can still use and access our home wifi !!
it's the same network that i'm trying to connect to anyway!
i tried using my broadband instead to connect online and it works fine!
but everytime i try to connect using wifi at home , again i cant connect!
anyone can tell me what's going on?
i haven't try joining other network anyway! but i'm planning to do so..
can some one help me please??
    showing me a message that
my airport has the self-assigned IP address 169.***.****.** and will not be able to connect to internet!

and now, when i tried to check again my network preference below the airport tab is showing a message that
"my airport does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet!"
then after seconds it will goes back to the first message that
"airport has the self assigned IP address etc....."
i don't know whats going on now!
airport tab is not showing green color anyway! i'ts always in yellow!
i tried turning it on and off but nothing happen! HEEELLLLPP!!!!

  • Airport and a self-assigned IP address - can't access wireless net

I have a strange issue with Airport picking up a wireless network.
I'm not in my usual location using my MacBook Pro.
There is a wireless network here.
Airport sees it, and asks for the password (provided to me).
Airport looks connected, but, I see the message: "Airport has a self-assigned IP Address and may not be able to connect to the internet".
And in fact, it cannot. I've run through the diagnostics routine twice, and no go.
How do I get Airport to accept an IP address from this wireless configuration?

I am having a nearly identical problem. The solution provided did not work for me.
We have two MacBook laptops, one is mine and the other my wife's. My laptop still works fine. The AirPort communicates well with the wireless router. My wife's laptop just started having this problem about a week ago. The latest Airport software updates helped, but did not solve.
The problem is that I now have to go into network diagnostics everytime to connect my wife's laptop to the wireless router. I have to re-enter the password to the router each time. Once I enter the password, it finds the IP address and connects everything properly. I checked the keychain password and it is there, so I don't know why it keeps losing the IP address.
One thing that I did preceded this problem. I changed my router password to WEP. If anyone knows if this could cause the problem, let me know.

  • "Airport is connected to the network... AirPort has a self-assigned IP addr

    Hi,
The subject of this posting is part of the message I am getting:
"AirPort is connected to the network... AirPort has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet."
And with the message I get a yellow dot.
Now, I've tried using "Assist me" several times, tried TCP/IP manual configuration, Using DHCP with manual address, just DHCP, and BootP (this one oddly enough worked for the first time, but now it is no longer working). I also tried to connect using the DNS server as the 192.168.0.1 (the one for the D-Link), but no dice.
I have a D-Link DI-624 router connected to my Power PC G4; the internet works fine in the G4 and (gasp) in my kids (2) PCs!!! So, it is not the router, nor the connection with the internet.
Here is the odd thing: before I upgraded to Tiger the internet connection in my PBG4 via AirPort (same everything, except for the growling Tiger), was GREAT, no problems, no interference, no dropping connections.
So, I thought it was the PBG4 personality getting too picky. I reboot the thing, erase all the memory and started fresh (that is when the BootP worked). Turned off and went to sleep; the next day the problem has returned like a ghost from the horrifying past....
And by the way, the AirPort works beautifully at my university wireless network.
Please, any good soul out there, help me out on this puzzle.
    Thanks.
    Ariane.
    class=otherinfo>Power Mac G4, PowerBook G4, D-Link DI-624 AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Router   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

These might work. I have a D-Link 524 router which I got from a client as payment for work on his computers. The thing is abysmal. I spent two days tinkering with it. I found the issues many have here with the D-Link routers and a Mac. Specifically a PowerBook G4 that I have connected through Airport to the D-Link. At first when I connected my DSL to the router, it gave me a good, fast signal to my wired PCs. Then It started giving me problems with dropping the signal on the wired PCs and the router started to reboot every few minutes when I connected my PowerBook. To make a long story short, I tried a lot of settings, but I found that if I changed the setting in the TX speed of the performance menu under the Advanced tab to 11(Mbps), my PowerBook works fine and there are no conflicts. This took me two days, people, and I know a thing or two about these metal, wire and plastic thingies. I hope this helps someone... I guess you can also set the speed to 54g or just opt to keep it in G if that's what you have. It seems to me that the D-Link routers have some faulty or "screwed up" chip technology that doesn't play well with others in mixed mode.
