The "n" upgrade only works on the Core 2 Duo models - those had the 802.11n spec cards in them. It won't install on cards that don't support the '.11n spec.
Right in the description from the Apple Store:
"These Macs have the 802.11n hardware built-in:
MacBook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo
MacBook with Intel Core 2 Duo
Mac Pro with AirPort Extreme option
iMac with Intel Core 2 Duo (except the 17-inch, 1.83GHz iMac)
Please make sure you have one of these Mac computers before purchasing the 802.11n Enabler software. It is not compatible with other Mac models."
You can get your Airport icon back through System Preferences/Network/Airport - the checkbox for "Show Airport status in menu bar"

  • Airport icon grey after installing software update Security Update 2007-004

Yesterday I installed Security Update 2007-004 (10.3.9 Client)(April 19, 2007) and since then when I wake-up my iBook (which was functioning fine prior to closing it and puting it to sleep) the airport icon is greyed out. The only way to get the airport icon to be black (functioning)is to restart the iBook.
Has anyone else had this issue or does anyone have any ideas. I an running 10.3.9 on a 2 USB port G3 iBook with a snow airport.
    Thanks.

Have you tried the simple solution posted by quovadis?

  • Cant upgrade Airport Extreme on Macbook Pro Core Duo to 802.11n

I have an original Macbook Pro Core Duo, purchased not long after Apple's announcement of "Bootcamp", and it has a "Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g).
From what I can tell from various documentation around the web, this should be upgradable to 802.11n with Apple's 802.11n Enabling software, however it tells me that the hardware is not compatible.
If anyone can suggest what I am doing wrong, or whether I miss out, that would be good.
Also, assuming it can not be upgraded, will running my local Airport network in "802.11n 5GHz 802.11a compatible mode" affect the speed of my other 802.11n devices on the network?
    Thanks.

So you're basically saying 'Link Speed' shows the current connection? If so, the problem resolved itself. Sorry, my bad. Thanks anyways.
(My Time Capsule hasn't arrived yet. I'm currently using an older version of Airport Express.)
Another thing. When I asked at the local Apple Center for the 802.11n card, they told me, the card itself is not sold separately and even if so, it could not be exchanged, since it's unremovably attached to the logic board. Why do they tell the customers something like that? I mean, if Apple doesn't want the users to make changes like that, fine. Then they should say so. But why make up stories in order to dissuade people from their ideas? Is that common policy?

  • Airport extreme 802.11n plus airport express as wds

    hi,
with my new mb air i´ll want to upgrade to airport extreme and 802.11n. right now i´m using airport express which i´d like to keep as it supports airtunes. my idea is to make a wds network and use the express station as a range extender. now i´m wondering if i get any performance problems because the extreme station is "n". i´m afraid the whole network could run in 802.11b/g?!
    - christian

    OrthoProf:
No, there is no way to do this using nothing more than your existing Airport Extreme N Base Station. If you want to use an Airport Express as a wireless client to an Airport Extreme N Base Station, you must have "b/g compatible mode" enabled on that Base Station.
Christian wasn't implying that he had an Airport Express working with an Airport Extreme N Base Station in "n-only" mode. He actually had the same concerns you have over the fact that his Airport Extreme N Base Station would have to run in "b/g compatible mode" were he to use his Airport Express with his new Base Station - nence the reason he started this discussion.
Ben recommended setting up a dual-band wireless network. You could do this too - but you would have to purchase another wireless access point (like another Airport Express) which would be cabled to your Airport Extreme N Base Station. That new access point would provide b/g wireless access to b/g capable wireless clients (like the remote Airport Express you are streaming iTunes to) and would allow the Airport Extreme N Base Station to be configured in n-only mode for n-capable wireless clients.

  • My Trial Illustrator icon disappears after completing installation download

I am not a tech person, so please bear with me and thanks for any help.
I have a MAC OS X version 10.4.ll Processor is 800 MHz Power PCG4. My Memory is 1GB SDRAM.
When I go online to download Illustrator CS4, this is what happens.
An icon appears on my desktop called ADBEILSTCS4_LS1.dmg. When I click it, the Adobe Illustrator icon appears. Beneath it are three PDF files. When I click onto the Adobe icon, it then hit "Setup". The installer screen checking system profile comes on and is ultimately found to be fine. Then the Loading Set.up screen appears and I check "install" After a few minutes, both bars finish and a message saying "Thanks for installing Adobe Illustrator CS4" appears. When I hit "exit", the AI icon on my desktop disappears.
I have tried reloading this five times and each time the results are the same.
If someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.
    Many thanks!!!

  • "Accounts" preference pane icon gone after 10.5.2 update

This weekend I realized that the Accounts preference pane icon is now missing from my system preferences. I checked my system/library/preferencepanes folder and the accounts.prefpane file is indeed not there. My login information is working fine; I just have no way to change any user information now. I have a feeling the 10.5.2 update has something to do with this.
Has anyone else noticed missing preference pane icons in their system preferences lately? Anyone know how to get the Accounts.prefPane back? Any help would be much appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
That's odd. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.2 Combo Update.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Run Verify Disk in Disk Utility before update and Repair Permissions after.

  • Contacts icon gone after upgraded 4s sync.

Upgraded to the 4s, synced to my computer, and everything appears except there is no "contacts" icon and no contacts appear in the phone contacts either.  Anyone else have this problem?  I'm new to this, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious.

I have the exact same problem, so we all wait for the fix with baited breath (whatever that means). My recent calls, voice mails, and favorites are all still there but my Contacts are gone, as well as gone from the Contacts App. I-Phone 4 )S upgrade. (Verizon- CDMA version)

  • Icons gone after disk and permissions repair

I ran Onxy to clean my MBP and it told me I had to run disk utility from my Mac osx install disk and do disk repair and permissions before I could use it.
I did it, took about 5 minutes to complete, but now whenever I save something from photoshop the preview image of the icon is gone, there's no icon, just the name of the file. I went looking through finder and half of my preview icons are gone on pictures, pdf's etc.
The finder preference icons are gone too: http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb147/shdwslayer/Screenshot2010-10-20at75332P M.png
And here there are blank spaces where the icon is supposed to be, just the name of the file: http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb147/shdwslayer/Screenshot2010-10-20at75413P M.png
So my question is, is there any way to get the icons back and have saved files show the icon again? Or should I just use time machine to go back to yesterday?

I just restarted my computer, again, and the icons are back. Don't know where they went, but they're there now.

  • ITunes Radio icon gone after upgrade

Lost my Radio icon and use since recent upgrade to 11.0 I have it clicked on in preferences. Nor is it disabled under "parental controls". How can I get it back?

Without knowing the exact error message about what couldn't install, I recommend installing QuickTime standalone, not regular
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
Download the isntall file to your hard drive - don't install it over the internet.
If you are running anything Norton, turn that completely off before installing.
Then install iTunes right on top of that.
There is something badly wrong with the bundled iTunes + QT install package on some people's PCs. Usually the QT standlone fixes it.

  • Bridge Airport Extreme and Time Capsule together? (both 802.11n)

    Hello all,
    1) I just picked up a used time capsule (1TB) to replace my AE and start backing up. I was going to try to sell the AE. I have heard they can be bridged together to create a stronger wireless signal. The phrase "wireless relay bridge" has been thrown around. Can anyone tell me if this is possible and how to do it?
    2) Also curious if either TC or AE can be placed in separate areas (levels) of the house to 'spread' the signal around better. The Basement is the current location for everything.
    Thanks...Jimmy

First, you need to make sure that your TC is setup correctly. So check that device using AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab/label just below the row of icons
    1) Make sure you have a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    2) Jot down the exact security setting that your TC is using as you will need this later
Update to save changes on the TC
It would be a good idea to "hard reset" the AEBS to start fresh, so hold in the reset button on the device until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly. Hold another few seconds when you see this and then release.
It's also a good idea to configure the AEBS near the TC, then move it to the desired location once you have it setup. You can configure the AEBS using wireless, or if you have a spare ethernet cable handy, you can connect using ethernet. Connect the cable from your computer to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS.
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, assign a device password and adjust Time Zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = click on the arrow on the selection box and the name of your TC network should appear. Click to select or type in the exact name of the TC wireless network
Check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact setting that you wrote down from the TC settings
Wireless Password = Same password as your TC wireless network
    Confirm Password
Click Update to save settings. If you used the ethernet cable, you can disconnect it and close Airport Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored. You should get a green light in about 30 seconds.
Now you can move the AEBS to a location where it will receive a strong signal from your TC and it will "extend" the wireless network for greater coverage.

  • 802.11n + Airport Extreme Base Station: Questions?

I'm no aficionado on wireless technology but I thought the new 802.11n spec was just a draft and nothing was set in stone, so how can Apple upgrade and sell products to this spec??
Is anyone of the opinion that a lot of the post 10.4.8 wireless connectivity problems being experienced by a lot of iMac and Pro intel-mac users is to do with Apple trying to roll out SW and HW that conform to this new spec instead of, in the first instance, ensuring robust solutions with the common 802.11g protocol with their new intel range? In effect, are they trying to run before they can walk with this?
Would having a new Airport Extreme Base Station thus Airport Extreme card upgraded to be 802.11n compatible, instead of a 3rd party modem/router at 802.11g solve all these connectivity problems, or, is anyone else experiencing the same problems with the new Base Station and 802.11n enabled card??
Lastly, is anyone aware if apple intend to upgrade and release a new [plugin] Airport Express Base Station compatible with the new 802.11n draft?
I have two AE's acting as print servers and powering remote speakers; would enabling my 17” iMac C2D to 802.11n affect output to the Airport Express base stations???

I too do not see why the rush to Draft N when the specs might change enough to make a substantial purchase worthless once the standard is finalized. I have read too many articles mentioning that the current technology isn't worth it just yet.
Furthermore, many people are buying Draft N networking thinking that it will give them a huge boost in their internet. Since even the slower 802.11G is faster that what most ISPs provide, no one will see faster downloads. The main benefits are range and speeds on your local area network - that is in transferring files from one computer to another.
It is possible that the problems some users are seeing is due to the cards Draft N status, but I do not think so. If that were the case, we would be seeing a lot of complaints in the PC world since they are using the same equipment and I haven't seen complaints there.
Since 802.11N is 802.11N it should not make a difference whether it is Apple or D-Link or any other brand, but as a draft standard there are variations in the implementation that I have read about in the PC world. Some routers are better than others and some should just be avoided.
Apple doesn't allow us to speculate here, but I am sure that sooner or later Apple will update the Airport Express to Draft N as well.
Updating your iMac to Draft N should not make a difference at all with your current setup.
