Airport icon greyed out - Airport card failure?

The Airport icon in the menu bar is "greyed out" implying my computer (iBook Powerbook 4,1) is too far from the wireless base station. However I am typing this question on another iBook that is less than a foot away from the problem machine.
The older computer did not have built in Wireless capability and we purchased and installed an Airport Extreme card. This was maybe ten years ago.
I suspect that the Airport card has simply reached the end of its useful life and is unable to pick up wireless signals but would welcome any thoughts anyone else might have

why does my sound icon grey out and doesn't allow me to make changes on the system settings

When you go to System Preferences > Sound what does it say for Output? Have you had headphones plugged in? Sometimes the headphone jack gets stuck thinking it has something plugged in when there isn't anaything there. SMC also has something to do with Sound:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.

I am not sure but unless the item is not phrased as a question, or does not have question in the Content it doesn not become active. I have seen this several times.  And its always appeared for me when the person was just declaring a statement. and not asking anything.

  • Facetime icon greyed out in contact list

I am runing 10.10.1 for my iMac and have the latest software on my Iphone 6.  The contact I would like to use FaceTime is in China and uses a iPhone 5.  My computer contact list shows the Facetime icon greyed out.  The same contact in my iphone has no indication of a Facetime option.  I have checked my settings for both messages and FaceTime.  I have used messages to communicate with this person.
Why can I not use FaceTime?
    Thanks,
    Brad

I would guess that something on your contact's end is the issue - can this person make Facetime calls to anyone?

  • Airport Icon Greyed Out with Up Arrow Over It

I have a PowerBook Pismo G3 with an original airport card. Worked fine to connect to wifi networks. A grandchild fiddled with the settings in the internet/file sharing/airport/??? panes and now I can't connect wirelessly to anything.
What does the Up Arrow over the Airport icon in the menu bar mean?

    Hello MartaGo,
    Welcome to the  Discussions!!!
Look in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet and see if Internet Sharing is on. If it is, turn it off.
The arrow through your Airport Menulet indicates that your Mac is acting as a Software Base Station and is using your Airport card to wirelessly share your internet connection (ala Airport Base Station).
I used my Mac Mini to do this while I was waiting for my Base Station. Worked great for my wife's PB.
    Hope This Helps,
    Jeff

  • Resolution of Logic Board/Airport card failure  - iBook G4 2005?

Well, after my first post this morning, I was kindly advised to post a new topic regarding my kernel panics and not-so-nice grey screens of death!
    So here goes....
I had experienced this problem since January, when my iBook purchased in April 2006 was coming up to it's first birthday. The problem was this - the iBook would freeze and i'd get a message stating that I needed to re-start. After re-starting, i'd get about 2-3 minutes of use, before the symtoms occured again.
I had the logic-board and airport card replaced twice, by an Apple Store, back in January. The first replacement failed as soon as I got it home, the second replacement failed last night.
So, somewhat dejectedly, I drove to Apple this morning, after booking a Procare session. I was expecting a bill of around £450, as that's what they quoted me back in January, if I had to pay for it. This time I would, as my iBook was 1 month out of warranty, with no Apple Care extended support.
Upon arriving 45 minutes early for my session at the 'Genius Bar', I was promptly served, and advised the tech-guru guy what the issue was. Upon looking at the logs, he checked my warranty, found it had expired, then told me to 'wait', and disappeared into the back office.
Some 5 minutes later, he reappeared, and simply said "have you still got the box for the iBook?"
I did, but it was at home, some 45 minutes away. Then he said these magic words - "We're going to replace it, and give you a new MacBook, free-of-charge"
I was blown away by this approach. I'd expected a repair, possibly a charge, depending on whether they realised that both replacements had been faulty. However, with a machine 1 month out-of-warranty, I did NOT expect a replacement machine.
However, that's what I got. So, I'm composing this thread on a brand-new MacBook Intel Core-2 Duo, with the new spec 1GB RAM and 80GB hard drive.
So, I'd like to take this moment to commend Apple on their outstanding customer-focused approach. Well-done on resolving my issue. Good luck to the rest of you experiencing similar issues.
    iBook G4 2005   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Your ibook G4 (purchased april 06 probably being the 1.3 ghz model) was worth about 440 pounds second hand. The quoted repair bill of 450 was higher than the price of the machine itself, and you were going to pay it?
There are unopened macbooks on ebay for 520-540 pounds (inc apple sales receipts+warranty).
Them asking you for the box means they're going to con another customer into buying your broken machine.

  • Airport card failure

My MacBook no longer wants to connect to my Airport Extreme. I had no problem at first and then it just dropped the connection. It is not the internet, I'm using an ethernet connection right now and my iMac G5 connects via it's airport card. Any idea what is the problem? All software is up to date via Software update. Thanks.

when selecting "Upload Firmware" from the Menu bar be sure to hold down
the Command button when selecting it, it will give you prior firmware versions if they have been installed and you won't have to download it. <Edited by Moderator>

  • Wi-fi icon greyed out and showing "No Network selected"

I have an iMac (20 inch; early 2009) running Lion and use an Airport Extreme as my router. The Airport Extreme is connected to my computer and all others in the home connect through it wirelessly.
Lately, if the Mac has been off or in sleep mode, when I wake it or turn it o, I'm still connected to the internet but the wi-fi icon is greyed out. When I click on the icon, it shows "No Network Selected" and then begins searching for a network. My network pops up as an available network, but I have to choose it each time.
This never happened until a couple days ago. I haven't made any changes to software, hardware, etc. and all software is up-to-date. The only thing I've done a couple days ago was a soft reset of the Airport Extreme, as my Apple TV was acting strangely. I pushed the reset button and everything was fine with the Apple TV.
No other devices or computers on the network are having any problem with the network.
Could the soft reset have done this? If so, what can I do get the wi-fi and the network to work together again? If not, any suggestions as to how to fix this?
Also, how do I determine the generation of the Airport Extreme? It was purchased in April/May 2009.
    Thanks very much.
    Sheri

Have you tried power cycling your wireless router? First step would be to turn it off, wait a minute and turn back on. Is this router supporting other wireless equipment, such as computers, and how are they working?
Do a hard reset on the iPad, hold both the sleep and home buttons until the Apple Logo appears.
Reenter all of the network settings manually.
Then try to connect and see if it is working correctly.
Problems like this can be hard to separate router issues from iPad issues until you try several things on each.

  • Raid utility - hardrive icon greyed out although drives are ok?

    Hello,
I've been trying to create a Raid set (raid 0), and later  are going to create a second raid set (raid zero) to mirror it so  Raid 0+1. We installed a raid card last week In Raid utility the hardrive icon is greyed out. The battery conditioned, apaprently successfully, but has started conditioning again. We  sucessfully created a raid zero set in disk utility  from the two drives, but Raid Utility doesn't recognise them. I haven't done this before so apologies if i misunderstand or explain anything badly. Help greatfully received  : )
    Mac Pro 10.6.6

Dedicating four drives to hold data that could be serviced by one will not get you performance or data security. If you seek performance, use a pair of drives to create a Striped RAID, and plan on rolling the files off to another medium at the end of the day or every few days.
Mirrored RAID is NOT Backup. It extends the time-to-repair after a drive failure, and is useful for mission-critical and near-non-stop services. You still need a backup scheme. If you have to do backups anyway, why bother with Mirrored RAID unless you have data that meets the description above?
We  sucessfully created a raid zero set in disk utility  from the two drives, but Raid Utility doesn't recognise them.
You choose one or the other. Either you are using RAID Utility and the RAID card, OR
... you are NOT using the RAID card and using Disk Utility.
The RAID card is useful for RAID schemes where checksums must be computed and checked on-the-fly, such as RAID 5.

  • Wifi icon greyed out, but connected

Just got a new iMac and everything was running smoothly, until I noticed the wifi icon in the menu bar is greyed out. When I click on it, my connection shows with all darkened bars in the list, but the icon at the top is still greyed out. Can anyone help with this?

Have you by chance moved any system files?
Click the AirPort icon in the status menu bar to make sure it's turned on.
Could be your router. Check out this article >  http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/wifi-dropping-in-os-x-lion-fixes/

  • Sharing Icon Greyed Out

Hello, last week we went to setup a new share on our Tiger server 10.4.2 and we found the "Sharing" button in WGM to be greyed out. No matter what we did would get it back. We authenticated, rebuilt permissions, rebooted and nothing seemed to make a difference. I've seen other references to this problem on the forum with no response actually solving the question. Any ideas? Our next step is to run the 10.4.3 upgrades, could this make the problem worse?
    Thanks

Can you please confirm wether or not you can edit users? The user list will not be grayed, but if you select a user, the editable options will be. I suspect you have some Open Directory policies that are not being met by Workgroup Manager. Confirm for me first though.

  • "Motion 4" icon greyed out after upgrading to Yosemite - Did Yosemite break "Motion 4" in Final Cut Studio?

Against my better judgement (now that Apple has turned into Microsoft 10 years ago, breaking apps with every OS update, followed by radio silence from Apple, pretending like they didn't do anything), I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite and noticed that my Motion 4 icon is now greyed out. Thanks Apple.
I still do the majority of my work in Final Cut Pro 7, with many, many, Motion 4 projects embedded in the timeline (so that I can change them in Motion and have them seamlessly updated in my Final Cut Pro project), including an unfinished feature length documentary on gay and lesbian history from 2000 BC until 1900 AD. Should I just throw the entire film into the rubbish bin? I would presume that Motion 5.1.2 is incompatible with Final Cut 7? So what am I supposed to do now?
1 - Downgrade to Mountain Lion (or heck, why not Snow Leopard?)?
2 - Switch to Adobe Premiere?
3 - All of the above?
    Thanks (for nothing, Apple).
MacBook Pro 15" with Retina Display
    2.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB

After some peacefull time my system crashed completely on Friday!
I installed all from Scratch to make sure its not some old stuff that I carried on during migration.
It's not a problem with the motion files as I deleted all of them and XML export is still crashing!
The situation is, that after installing it all I got the same quicktime translation error again and I am quite angry about how Apple handles clients who are working on projects with the recent FCP story.
Unfortunately due to the problems in exporting XML I am not even able to switch to Adobe Premier as this is the only way to import there.
After a lot of testing I am quite sure, that this issue has to do something with an Apple Update release between June 2011 and now.
Conclusion: Final Cut Studio II is not working correctly anymore as it did before June 2011!!! Apple, Please fix this issue asap.!!!!

  • In "Messages", I can no longer use voice commands to enter the message. Mic icon greyed out.

I use the voice recognition (press the mic icon) capability for text messages regularly.  After the last iOS update, it's greyed out and doesn't allow me to use it anymore.
Is there a work around for this?

To use "dictation" as it is called, there are two requirements:
    1.  Siri must be turned on (Settings > General > Siri)
    2.  You must be connected to the internet.
