Airport Icon shows several connections?

Hi, I'm recently seeing several connections up in my airport icon (upper right of screen). I see mine of course, and sometimes several others. I'm guessing they are neighbors? Is this bad, and is there a way to not have them show up? I'm guessing this could be the cause of my slow Safari in downloading pages. Thanks

It's not bad. There is no way not to see them. If you could engineer that, your network wouldn't be seen either. There is no negative effect from being able to see them, but the other networks may be presenting an interference problem for you. There are several steps you can take to lessen interference, all listed at Support, and also in your Help menu.

Try disconnecting the Ethernet cord and see if that changes it.
You can also try going to System Preferences/Network/Wi-Fi and deselect the show in menu bar option and then reselect ity.

  • Airport Extreme "Show Time Connected" Display

    "SHOW TIME CONNECTED" problem
I have a relatively minor problem with my Airport Extreme. I have elected to have the “Show time connected” displayed in my menubar. For the last few months, and certainly since I upgraded to OS 10.7, the time connected display keeps resetting itself, sometimes actually back into negative time, showing as a negative time connected and gradually working its way up to zero. At other times it will seem to work accurately for a day or 2 and then reset itself back to 0.
This does not seem to affect my  Airport Extreme function which does not disconnect or dysfunction. It seems that it is only the timer itself that keeps resetting itself. I know this is a minor issue but would be happy for any advice on how to correct it.
    Thanks very much.

I ran OS 10.5 for 3 years with my Time Capsule and never saw a negative time.  I recently updated to 10.6, but I don't think that that caused the problem, although I didn't check the apparent connected time on another computer.
"...only seems to affect a few users." is not a defense.  Apple's job is to write software that always works, not that works mostly.  I'm not sure that there would be a flood of reports.  I think that most people don't turn this option on.  It's an obscure setting (people ask where it is in other forum posts) and of little apparent value.  I use it because it's the only reliable indicator that I am actually connected to the internet.  I would not have upgraded the firmware on my TC except that the flashing yellow light (that I can't reset) made detecting other problems with the TC impossible.
I should also point out that on a recent trip I connected to a wi-fi router that does not support displaying the connected time.  However, my computer continued to display the time that my TC had been connected when last it spoke to my computer.  This does appear to be a 10.6 bug, as 10.5 never did this.

  • Airport Status Shows Minutes Connected

My airport status indicator is not only showing bars, it is showing minutes connected. As I am always connected, I find this incredibly annoying. It also takes up valuable menu bar space. If I click off "show airport status" the minutes go away, but so do the bars. I want the bars, but not the minutes. Can anyone help?

I apologize for my short response, especially since you're absolutely right - I could swear there was an option somewhere in Airport Admin Utility that shows time connected, but after posting my hasty response I can't find it either! So who's stupid now?
I realize you have 10.5. I only downloaded Airport Utility after reading your question. Airport Utility basically replaces 10.4.x's Airport Admin Utility I referenced. I haven't Airport Utitliy it yet but I'll post back when I find the equivalent function. It's gotta be there somewhere.

  • Airport Status Icon shows no connection - however connection is there

Dear all - I experience a strange issue introduced with the last update on my G5IMac when applying the last updates of OS10.4.10. When being online (wireless) I loose the connection for a fraction of a second - then it comes back. However the airport symbol in the menu turns grey (not connected) indicating no connection. Using a WiFi widget, I do see that I am connected, I can stream online music and browse the web. What's going on here? Any idea?
    Cheers

Since everybody doesn't have the problem, I really wouldn't call it a "bug" in anyway, though it certainly is a shortcoming of the OS, GigaBits of ones & zeroes flying around,.
I'm certain if you Zeroed your HD, re-installed, and used only the BIG Combo Updates to get to 10.4.10, that everything would work just peachy!
Short of that, it may take some doing to figure out wherein your problem lies.
    I'm willing though.

  • Why does the airport icon shows "wifi: no hardware installed"?

One day it was working fine and the next the airport stop working.  I've already tried resetting the SMC and PRAM with no luck. Any help would be great as I am trying to avoid costly repairs.

The usual reason is that the Airport card has failed and will need to be replaced.

  • Able to access internet yet error message shows not connected?

    Lenovo W520 4270CTO
    Windows 7 Professional SP1 64 bit.
Each time I connect my laptop to a location other than my (first and original) home office, the network icon in the taskbar shows a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark through it, meaning "Unidentified network, no access". Yet, I have both wifi and LAN connection as evidenced by me being able to post on this forum.
I have tried to change my location to "home" or "work" to no effect. One of the error messages I get is 'must belong to a home network' in order to change. Well, from what I can understand, a home network is created by and for other Win 7 machines. I am the only one at this location...and I own the network (my new home office location). In another instance where this happened, I had a network engineer at that office location look at the problem and that's where I learned that although the icon shows no connection, it was in fact connected to their wifi.
It is impacting me because I subscribe to MS Office 365. I have had Microsoft support trying to troubleshoot the problem, inadvertently as I was having trouble connecting my Outlook client to get mail. Since that time, my Office 365 subscription needs activation, but it can't hit the MS license server. Also my Skydrive is not synching. It's definitely been determined (by MS) that it's a local network issue. I don't think it is a network because it happens at other locations.
I need to get this fixed because my MS office license has expired and it needs re-activation. I have loaded the latest Lenovo wifi driver, thinking that would help (Intel PrOSet/Wireless Software version 16.1.3). Not sure what else to do here. I am going grayer by the day.

well, first check whether you're connected to the blackberry network...
how can I check whether myself connected to blackberry?
Check within the network bars on the phone whether it is showing you 3G, EDGE or GPRS in capital letters...!!
If not give a hard-reset to the phone (remove the battery put it back once)...
And if it shows in caps letters then try requesting for services again... how? on the phone desktop > within the search bar > type "Host Routing Table".... search results shows you as "options"... select that & select host routing table... afterwards, hit the blackberry menu button > select register...

  • Airport icon in OSX menubar is showing the connected time

    how do i disable this?
it didn't show when i was connected using other wifi access points.

    thanks... and the solution is
If you click on the menubar icon, and hover over the network you're connected to, a submenu will pop up, one item of which is the "show time connected" option. It's checked, so just pick it again and the time will disappear

I recently bought an Ipod touch 2nd gen, (Ebay). It's in great shape and seemed to be wiped clean.
When I connect (via windows computer) to Itunes with usb cord the Ipod icon shows, but the only function you can do is eject. When its in the upper right hand corner and you click on it all you get is a done button, when it's in the side bar right click and your only option is eject, left click has no effect. If I go to "file">devices it's as if there are no devices connected.
I purchased a song with Itunes on the Ipod itself, and it transferred to my library on the computer automatically .
I have an Iphone 5 and a nano that are still functioning with Itunes thru computer so I'm thinking the issue is with the Ipod touch. I've reset it several times, rebooted it, with no change.
nothing on the internet has helped, I called tech support and got disconnected. Should I take it to a retail store? I just don't know where to go next, I'm of course willing to pay for tech or repair. looking for suggestions.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

The airport icon (upper right portion of the screen) says I am connected to my airport; but, the Itunes window doesn't show the icon (rectangle with an arrow in it) that allows me to select the stereo system speakers that are attached to the airport.  What's up with that?

If the modem is also a router, either use the modem in bridge and run pppoe client on the TC.. that is assuming ADSL or similar eg vdsl. If it is cable service.. and the modem is a router, then bridge the TC.. go to internet page and select connect by ethernet and below that set connection sharing to bridge.
Please tell us more about the modem if the above gives you issues.

Hi Roy, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7 & 10.8…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

  • Wi-Fi icon shows, but won't actually connect to anything

    Hi all,
Earler today, my iPhone 4 was working fine.  At some point however, the internet just crapped out on me.  The wifi icon shows up, indicating that it is connected, but when I go to use an application, it won't connect to the internet.
I have tried on 3 different wifi networks, so I know it is not my home network at fault.  I have tried forgetting, and then reassigning the network, and that didn't work.  I have tried using safari, the app store, and several other internet-using apps, so I know that it is not just my safari settings or something.
I have read a couple online forums, and it seems like a lot of people are having trouble after the 4.3.5. iOS update.  I can't imagine that apple would take this long to put out a patch or a new update if this one is causing so many widespread problems.
If anyone can PLEASE help me with getting my phone back online it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Some people have problems after every update and between updates. But there are 110 million iDevices. Some of them will have problems at any time. For 110 million A LOT would be at least 10 million. Have you seen 10 million posts about this problem? or even 1 million? How about 100,000? 10,000? If you focus on the 4.3.5 update you will never solve the problem, because a quick search will show that there are always some people who have problems, including this one, and the reports go back 4 years. So instead forget that it is related to 4.3.5, because it isn't.
The fact that earlier today it worked, and now it doesn't and I assume you did not update to 4.3.5 in between, pretty much eliminates the version as having anything to do with it even in your case.
Have you rebooted the phone? (Hold the HOME and SLEEP keys at the same time for 10-15 seconds, until an Apple logo appears).
I know you are sure it isn't your home network, but humor me anyway. Reboot your home router by turning it off for about 15 seconds. If it still doesn't work go to Settings/General/Reset and Reset Network Settings. You will not lose anything, but will have to re-enter WiFi passkeys.
If you still have a problem do some basic diagnostics. Try to connect to a network, like your home network. Does the WiFi symbol appear and stay (not revert back to 3G after a minute)? Tap on Settings/WiFi and tap on the arrow to the right of the network name you are connected to. Look at the IP address. Does it begin 169, or is it 192 or 10? If it begins 169 this means that the router did not provide an IP address. If it begins with 192 or 10 it is connected to a local area network, which is good. If it is something else post what the IP address is; there's something very wrong.
Assuming it is 192 or 10, what is the DNS address? It may be 2 addresses separated by a comma; the first should be the first 3 triads as the IP address (e.g., if the IP address is 192.168.1.4, the first DNS address should be 192.168.1.xxx, where xxx is most likely 1 or 10).
The next thing to check is a computer connected to the same router. Can it access the Internet? It's always possible you have a local outage.
Assuming that none of these fix the problem Restore your phone with iTunes, and do not reload your backup. DO NOT SYNC, but see if it now connects. If it does work connect the phone to iTunes again and DO NOT SYNC, but right click on its name and chose Restore from Backup. If it still works after this you are home free, but it it doesn't you have a corrupted backup and will have to Restore as New again.

  • Phone got wet,now it's only showing the apple icon and sometimes connect to itunes

3gs phone got wet,now it's only showing the apple icon alternating with connect to itunes

You didn't connect it to your computer or to power, did you?
Wipe it down, put it in a baggie with raw rice or new silica gel packets and set it in a cool, dry area, like a cupboard. Leave it there for 3 - 4 days.
Take it out after this time, wipe it off, use a soft brush to wipe any rice dust from the dock connector, and connect it to your wall charger. Let it charge for at least 30 minutes and then Reset it while it is connected to power. May take several tries. If it revives fully charge it.
If this does not work you can do an out-of-warranty replacement with Apple for $199 USD.

Unfortunately, you are describing the symptoms of an AirPort Extreme with a failing (or failed) internal power supply.
As a last resort, try a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Power off the AirPort by pulling the power cord
    Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the AirPort
Release the reset button and allow a full minute for the AirPort to restart
Now try to configure the AirPort again.  If you continue to see the same symptoms as before, the AirPort will need to be replaced.
