Airport in iMac versus iBook G4

it's creazy,
my airport internetconnection is doing great with my iBook G4
the signal is strong (3 tot 4 bars)
and than my iMac ... that is a disaster
sometimess a connection is just not possible
and when it works I'am happy to have '1' bar
saying this, my iBook stays at less than a meter (1 m) from the iMac.
so, it isn't the express making the mistakes, it's the hard- and software in the iMac.
anyone interested in answering this ?
thank you in advance

  • Cannot connect iMac to iBook via Airport Express

I've been using the Airport Express for 5 months with no problems. Internet and printer are routed through AE, which is accessible by either the iMac or iBook.
In either machine's Finder, there is a referenced alias (Network folder) to the other machine. Here, I can select "connect", which connects me to the other machine.
Problem - At present, the "connect to server" connection only works on the iBook. When I select it on the iMac, the spinning beachball appears after about 30 seconds, then another panel appears - FTP File System Authenticaion", which goes absolutely nowhere. Have never seen this before. In the past the "connect to server" panel appeared, and connection was made with no problems.
Not sure why the iMac is not recognizing the iBook, i.e. the "Connect to Server" panel is not appearing?
Here is what I have done - (no change in problem):
    Restarted both machines
    Unplugged Airport Express and restarted
Attempted to delete the iBook's alias on the iMac - won't allow me - don't have sufficient priv)
Checked Airport settings - nothing new noted
File Sharing is "on" for both machines
    Appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Yes it is possible that the two machines are creating a Computer-to-Computer network and are not going through the Express.
To delete the Alias you may need to login with the Admin User.

  • Printer Sharing with eMac, iMac, and iBook not working

Hello, everyone. I hope you guys can help me out with this:
I have an Epson Stylus CX4600 hooked up to my eMac via USB. My eMac prints fine with it. The eMac is getting its internet via an Ethernet wire going downstairs into my Linksys Router, which sends my Shaw internet to my iBook, my iMac, and my eMac.
I want to allow the iMac and iBook to access the printer over the network directly, so I can just print from those computers and have it come out the eMac printer.
I've looked at many articles on this. So far I've installed the drivers on all computers, plus they can all network to each other over File Sharing, so they are connected.
But I haven't been able to print yet. The most I've been able to do is get the files I try to print from the iBook and iMac to show up on the eMac, in its printer queue. Only it didn't show up for a LONG time. And when it did, the jobs automatically stopped and everytime I clicked start, it would automatically switch back to stopped again. The files would not print.
At this point, I want to get the iBook connected to it first. If I can do that, I'll try the iMac. But the iBook is first priority. I've tried making it connect to the Printer using IPP (IP Printing), and the result was... what I explained in the above paragraph. I also tried just ordinary Printer Sharing, but it said something close to this:
"Unable to locate eMac.local, Unknown host."
That hardly makes sense, because at that time I also tried getting the iBook connected to the eMac over File Sharing which worked. For some reason, the "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" files don't show up in my Network thing when I connect to them, or even when they're not connected. HOWEVER, I think they did at one point. I could swear I saw "eMac.local" and "iMac.local" in the Servers folder in the Network section of the iBook at one point. But it's no longer there.
Please help. I've described my problem as well as possible. What a long post. If there's any way to make my eMac, iMac, and iBook be able to print through my Epson Stylus CX4600 at any time directly, then I'll do it.
    Help!

Yes. I did say that my eMac, iMac, and iBook are all
connected to the internet and networked to each other
over the Linksys router. I believe the router is
still on factory settings because we never really
"set" or programmed anything with it.
Mac OS 9.2.2 on the iMac, Mac OS X 10.4.8 on the
    other two. IP addresses?
192.168.1.100 is what I would use to connect to the
    eMac from the other computers.
This is the eMac's IP, correct? Did you type it into Network, or was it assigned by the router's DHCP?
192.168.1.101 is what I would use to connect to the
    iBook from the other computers.
This is the iBook's IP, right? Again, fixed or DHCP?
192.168.1.102 is what I would use to connect to the
    iMac from the other computers.
    Same for this IP.
The iBook, as I've said, is wired. No wireless
    connections to speak of.
Okay. Now, if the router is handing out IP addresses via DHCP, what range was it configured for? My Linksys, for example, is configured to hand out IPs in the range 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.254. It has the IP 192.168.0.1, so the IPs 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.9 are available for me to hand out as fixed IPs. If I was to hand out 192.168.0.100 as a fixed IP, the router's DHCP server would have a potential problem, as it might hand out that address too, and only one device can have a particular IP address on a particular network. If your router is handing out 192.168.1.100, .101, and .102 via DHCP, you could and probably do have a conflict if you've got those addresses set up as fixed IPs. In particular, if you have anything else on the network, including Bonjour-enabled devices such as printers, you're likely to have a conflict.
Best way to resolve a conflict, if any:
1 set all the Macs to either DHCP, or if fixed IPs are required, to a fixed IP outside the range of the DHCP range on the router. (Or you could just turn off DHCP on the router.)
2 check the router to be sure that DHCP is set the way you want it, and the DHCP pool is what you think it is.
    3 shut down the Macs.
4 turn off the router, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on.
5 turn the Macs back on, one at a time.
On my Linksys, the way to set the DHCP pool is simple:
1 log into the router. (My router IP: 192.168.0.1. Yours would be 192.168.1.1.) Hit the 'Setup' tab. Verify the gateway IP. (Should be the router's IP. If it's not, something very strange is happening.) Verify the start of the DHCP pool. Verify that DHCP is on (or off, as you want). Verify the end of the DHCP pool. (My start is 192.168.0.10, and there are 245 IPs in the pool, so the end is 192.168.0.254. If I changed the number of IPs to 200, the end of the pool would be 192.168.0.209, and I'd be able to set the IPs 192.168.0.200 to 254 as fixed IPs if I wanted.) If your router allows for IPs to be reserved, you can set up reserved IPs for one or more of your Macs. (A reserved IP is an IP the router holds for a specific device. The network card in each computer has a specific MAC address; if that address is registered with the router, then every time that computer is turned on and connected it will get the IP that was reserved for it... so long as that IP is in the DHCP range and DHCP is turned on. Think of it as a fixed IP without your having to actually fix the IP.)

  • How to share and update one iTunes master library on an external HD between an iMac and iBook

Hi.  I am in the process of consolidating and switching gears from storing my iTunes libraries (which have roughly the same files) on both my iMac and iBook (both OS 10.7.5) to creating one master library on an external hard drive (Canvio Connect 2TB) and sharing that between both computers, updating the laptop (which I use less frequently) when necessary. I wanted to know if this is possible and if so, how to go about doing this in a way where I don't lose any data and am able to maintain it efficiently.  Thanks!

There is a library file on the external drive that contains a list of all the tracks you have put into iTunes.  The list points to media files iTunes plays are on the external drive too.  Using the instructions I provided you tell the iTunes application on each computer to start up using the library file on the external drive.  If you add a file to iTunes while using computer #1 the file will be copied to the media folder on the external drive and the library file on the external drive will be updated to show there is a new file.  When you plug the same drive into computer #2 and start iTunes it takes the file listing from the library file on the external drive.  You are using the one library with each computer and it exists only on the external drive which both computers use.  They are truly sharing the same single copy of the  library.
I have a box with objects inside and a list inside with an updated inventory of the objects. I give the box to you. You take some objects out and put some in and make a note in the list of what you have done, then put the list back inside and hand the box to me.  How do I know what changes you have done?  Simple.  I open the box and look at the list.  It's the same list that was in your hands only moments before.  I add a few objects and update the list, put it back inside the box and hand the box to you.  How do you know what changes have been made? Simple.  Open the box and read the list which was the one I updated moments before.  The only copy of the list is in the box so neither of us is needing to keep our own copy of the list updated.
Everything iTunes needs to generate your library listing is in the iTunes folder, but it doesn't have to be on the computer.  In your case it will all be on the external drive and each copy of the iTunes application on each computer will look and use the same identical library file on the external drive as you pass it from computer to computer.  Once you have set this up you can delete the entire iTunes folder in Music from your computer because the application will no longer be using it.  The only thing "iTunes" left on the computer will be the application itself, but each copy will have been told to use the library on the external drive.
Okay, enough.  I've said the same thing about 4 ways now.

  • Sync iTunes from iMac to iBook

how do I sync iTunes from iMac to iBook? I tryed through Bluetooth, no luck. Any ideas?

To keep both libraries perfectly synced, you may need to find a script or separate application to do it.
If you're just interested in keeping the music the same (but not necessarily play counts, ratings, etc) you can just copy the music itself from one computer to the other (via network).
Perhaps someone with a bit more imagination/experience can provide a working solution? I've done something similar by using an external/network drive and a sym linked iTunes library, but the problem with that is your laptop won't be able to access the music unless it's on your home network.

  • Tranfer from imac to ibook

I am unable to transfert my web site (iweb) from imac to ibook. How can I transfer my hard drive from one mac to the other. This should solve the question as I want to transfer my outlook also and unable to do so. Am in a rush. Have to catch a plane . Many thanks as this is kind of an emergency

    Hi Melanie
I haven't come across that problem before. It sounds like you're following all the right steps, and you're logging in to the other computer with the right credentials, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
However, providing that you're using an admin login, you can connect either way (iMac to iBook or iBook to iMac) to transfer files. An admin login will allow you to mount the entire hard drive of the other computer; an ordinary user login will only be able to access their own home folder. So if iMac --> iBook works for you, you can still copy files to the iMac that way. Make the connection, browse in the mounted iBook's folders, and copy across the files you want.

  • Network disappears completely from Airport on iMAC, G4 Powerbook +iPhone 4

    Can anybody please help..!
My network has disappeared completely from Airport on iMAC, G4 Powerbook + iPhone 4 and even after restarting the router several times the network does not reappear. It's been 2 days now and i need it to work from home urgently.
    thanks in advance !

    Hi Shane
if it's missing from three devices, I imagine that you may need to connect to it via ethernet cable & see if the wireless id is set to be hidden, as well as checking the setup pages to see if wireless is actually operating correctly.
Something like iStumbler or WiFi Scanner should help you determine that too.

Can't connect (wireless) to my Airport Express anymore with iBook, iPad or iPhone. It still recognizes the printer on the iBook (bonjour), but not on my Windows notebook (work). The only device that still connects via wireless is the PlayStation 3.

The latest firmupdate solved the issue.

My Macbook Air does not pick up wifi from Airport but iMac, iPad and iPhone do. Help please.

Are you testing in the same room as the TC?
Power cycle the TC.. does it show up now?
Has it ever showed up .. ie is this a problem that just started from an existing setup, or has never worked?
Is the TC new? If old how old?
If you continue to have issues.. setup the TC from iMac and preferably using ethernet.
Change the wireless names to SMB compatible ones, short no spaces, pure alphanumeric.
    Use WPA2 Personal security only.
Then set the wireless channels manually.. try 11, 6, 1 for 2.4ghz and try 36 or 40 at 5ghz.
    Tell us how that goes.

  • Cannot turn off airport on Imac and PowerBook

I cannot turn off airport on iMac 17" intel (late 2006) and G4 powerbook. One common thing is:
I got rid off .plist files (airport related) on both machines prior to putting new AE in to mix. I set up AE and not only I cannot establish wireless on both machines I cannot turn airport on both as well. Old G4 iMac (3rd machine that was not altered) works.
What did I get rid off?
    iMac gives me this:
    AirPort Card Information:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.9)
Current Wireless Network: AirPort is currently turned off
While Network pref. and icon in menus says airport is on. (Same with powerbook)
    Any suggestions?
Just to ad to confusion. This is replacement AE. First one after firmware upgrade (7.3.2) started to misbehave (very weak signal, mostly). I did downgrade to 7.3.1 but after couple of days I went for factory one (firmware that is), and here I am.

…after waking both computers from sleep situation is reversed. Airport is off and I cannot turn it on. After restart I am back to Airport on (not able to connect, while showing networks to join) and not able to turn off.

  • Airport Extreme Card with iBook G4 against Linksys WRT54GC

I am having massive problems with connections from my iBook G4 to my Linksys Wireless Compact Router. I'm getting perfect connections with our other computer's wireless card (linksys), even with my Nintendo DS.
I've searched(googled) for answers, but all I'm finding is a lot of unanswered questions, and the ones that are answered are about the Base Station. Any firmware updates I try to find are all Base Station.
    The specs are;
    Wireless Card Type: Airport Extreme
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
    Firmware Version: 404.2 (3.90.34.0.p16)
Worst case for me is the antenna is busted. That would be horrible, since I've only had this for a year (not even).
Currently, the network will come on, but annoys me to no end with "Cannot connect to airport network".
Is there any way to fix this without resorting to buying a whole new card?

Vitality, Welcome to the discussion area!
I use a Linksys WRTP54G with no problems.
Currently, the network will come on, but annoys me to no end with "Cannot connect to airport network".
Are you using a MAC control access list on your router? If so, you need to add the MAC address of the AirPort card in your iBook.

  • Airport Express Base station: iMac and iBook

I just purchased the Airport Express Base Station. I have an iMac with an Airport Extreme card and an iBook with an Airport card.
I can connect to the internet with the iMac but not with the iBook. The iBook is not even recognizing the airport.
Which is weird because when I first set up the Airport Express Base Station I was able to connect to the internet with my iBook. Then I set up the iMac as a base station, went back to the iBook and couldn't connect to the internet again.
So my iMac can connect to the internet but not the iBook??????

Then I set up the iMac as a base station...
Why did you do that if you have an AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS)?

  • Trying to create a wireless connection with an Imac and ibook

I was connected to the internet using a DSL cable modem, and ethernet. My main computer is a iMAC G5 (bought last year) using Snow Leopard as the operating system.
I recently acquired an old iBook (2004) running on Panther.
It was connected to the internet using a dual type ethernet/wireless modem from Sympatico.
It used the built-in airport to link to the internet.
I bought this week a new Airport Express 802.11n Wi-Fi device.
I sucessfully hooked up my iMAC to a new wireless network I created, but was unable to connect

    Is there a solution?

    Seriously? I spent that many hours searching for my several error messages, trying to solve them, not wanting to ask for help without putting too much of my own effort into it and when I finally decide to ask for help it is when I didn't get a super essential thing like makepkg doesn't install and is merely to create .pkg.tar.xz?? Oh gosh... (;
Well, thank you! I guess I'll take my next change to use Google to find out how to use makepkg without --asroot. Yes, wl is loaded now and it's set as the kernel driver in use!

  • Controlling iTunes on iMac via iBook

    Hi all,
I have an iMac G5 and my girlfriend has just ordered a nice & cheap refurbed iBook from the Apple store. We have a wireless network set up already. My question is this:
If I bought a AirPort Express Base Station, could I stream my iTunes library from my iMac (upstairs) to the Airport Express, but control playback from the iBook?
At the monet I stream rom my iMac to a Windoes laptop, but have to have an audio cord pulged from that into my amp downstairs and would love to go completely wireless.
    Thanks in advance,
    GeoffShoulders

    Hi Griffs
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping it would be simpler than that. At the moment I simply share my iMac Itunes library and pick it up using iTunes on the Windows laptop downstairs.
I was hoping that I could continue to share the files via the iTunes, but rather than have an audio cable out from the new iBook, wirelessly stream the music to an Airport/Airtunes connected to the stereo.
Anyone else know if that would work?
    Cheers,
    GeoffShoulders
