Airport keeps timing out

I have the older Airport Extreme--the one that looks like a flying saucer. Have had it for years obviously, and has worked like a champ up until a month or so ago. It is connected to my high-speed cable modem. I have 2 iPhones here and 2 MacBook Pros that are connected via Wifi to the Airport Extreme. I have performed all current software updates. Every few hours my connection will be lost, and the device I'm on (MacBook pro, iPhone, etc.) will ask for the password. However, the password won't work--I get a connection "timed out" error when I type in the (correct) password. The only way I've found to get it back up and running is to unplug the power of the Airport Extreme and plug it back in and power it back up. Then all my devices connect via WiFi automatically (without asking for the password).
Is it just time for a new Airport Extreme? The fella at the Apple Store said as far as compatibility goes, there shouldn't be an issue. Could it just be the unit is getting long in the tooth, or is there some software related problem that could be happening? I've checked out all my settings in the Airport Utility, and performed any available related updates.

Welcome to the discussion area, bpass2!
The problems you are describing are classic symptoms of wireless interference from one or more wireless networks that were installed about a month ago. If that's the case, a new router is likely going to have the same issues, so you might want to do some investigation on your own to see if you can work around the interference issue first. A new wireless security system at the neighbors can cause issues like this as well.
Don't discount the headaches that cordless phones can cause. My neighbor...across a wide street...can literally reduce my wireless to a crawl if he's in his front yard talking on his cordless phone.
Now, if you are lucky enough to live in an area with no other houses around you for a few hundred yards in every direction, my guess about interference will be pretty foolish.
If you suspect interference, you might want to download a utility like iStumbler to get a look at the competition for airspace around you. In particular, note the channels (CH) that each network is using and where they are in relation to your network. You want to be on a channel that is as far away as possible from other networks.
iStumbler won't detect a wireless security system or cordless phones, but it might help provide some clues for you in your search for clear airspace.
