Airport needs to be manually connected

Hi
Problem with an Intel imac running 10.4.10. When I start up the airport does not immediately connect to the network, I have to go into the airport menu at the top of the screen, click on the recognised network, and then it connects, no requests for password etc.
I've reset the router (BT home hub) checked all software updates, and am stumped. Any ideas?

I'm having this problem as well. Network settings are to connect to Preferred Networks by default, and my network is the only Preferred Network listed.

  • Have to manually connect to Airport

A few weeks ago, I turned off my Time Capsule's security for a short time.  I meant to turn it back on after an hour, but I forgot until about a week later, and then I couldn't remember which security setting I was using, so I just picked one.  I've since tried all of them except the enterprise settings because I'm sure I wasn't using those.  Since turning the security back on, my 2008 Macbook Pro has a difficulty connecting.  At first it won't see the network at all, then after 30 seconds or so, it pops up on the list and I have to select it.  My wife and daughter have Macbook Airs and those have not problem seeing the network, but have to be manually connected each time the computer is woken up.  Our iPads have no problem connecting at all.  None of these devices have trouble connecting to the network at the school I work at.  Any ideas how to fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    Rob

You need to delete all the previously remembered settings .. so go to the airport setup in network preference.. there will be a long list of the networks that were used or seen by the airport. Delete them all.
You might need to disconnect to remove the current one..
Just use the - button at the bottom of the listing..
Once you remove them all.. reboot the laptop (Old PC habits die hard .. it might not be necessary at all but I like to start over with a boot knowing it is clean).. then select the network from the TC and put in your password again.

  • I need an ethernet cable connection to a non-wireless device that isn't near my current airport express. Can I buy an extra one to plug in near the non wireless device to receive the wireless data and put the signal out in ethernet form?

    Yes, you can.
This is a special feature of the AirPort Express 802.11n.  You will have to set it up "manually" to "enable Ethernet clients".
If  your "main" AirPort Express is an 802.11n version, it is also possible to setup the second Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide additional wireless coverage in addtion to enabling the Ethernet port.
If you need the steps, post back to let us know what operating system you are using on the Mac or PC that will be used for the setup of the new AirPort Express.

  • I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

    Welcome!
Only one variant of the PowerMac G4 could use the faster Airport Extreme Card. The rest used the original Airport card that is pretty slow.
To get fast wireless without buying more than one thing, consider this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Edimax/EW7722IN/
It goes in an available PCI slot
There are USB solutions also. However, all PowerMac G4 towers had only slower USB 1.1 ports, so any USB wireless adaptor can only run at about wireless 'B" speeds (slow) unless you also install a PCI USB 2.0 adaptor card. Doing that would allow a USB wireless adaptor to run at its maximum rated speed. These items working together would accomplish that:
    USB wireless "dongle:"
Newer Technology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b USB Adapter + Plug and play direct or with extension cradle
    USB PCI adaptor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ntk=Primary&Ns=P_Popularity%7c1&Ne=5 000&N=7069&Ntt=USB+PCI
Each approach has its advantages. The PCI wireless card is a one-piece solution that takes up no desk space. The USB2 card+USB2 Dongle gives you more fast ports for transferring date from other external USB devices (primarily cameras and external hard drives) at hugely faster rates than can the original ports. I have a USB 2 PCI card in my G4 tower strictly for transferring images from my digital SLR camera in a timely manner.

  • Airport Time Capsule Can't Connect to BrightHouse Internet

I have BrightHouse Internet service set up as follows:
    1.  Coax in
    2.  Splitter
    3.  Coax out to ARRIS modem/telephony combo (BrightHouse box) and Motorola Surfboard (BrightHouse box, for high speed access)
    4.  Cat 5 from Surfboard to Netgear WNR2000 router.
Note:  The modem setup and splitter were installed by BrightHouse.
I want to replace my Netgear router with the AirPort Time Capsule (which to this point I have been using only as a backup drive for Time Machine).
Currently, when the AirPort is connected to a LAN port on the Netgear, I get internet to the AirPort (AirPort Utility says so).  With this configuration I have the following settings on the AirPort:
    1.  Network - Off (Bridge Mode)
    2.  Wireless network - Off (the broadcast conflicted with the wireless signal from my nearby Netgear WiFi)
    3.  Internet connect using DHCP
    4.  IPv6 configure automatically
I have tried various settings to get the AirPort connected, but never works.  The Airport Congifurations seem OK (green light in AirPort utility), but the Internet connectivity when plugged into the port on the back of either modem is absent (yellow light in AirPort Utility).
I've done all of the obvious stuff (made sure the ethernet cables are plugged into the proper ports, hard reset the Airport Time Capsule, reset both modems (even in very specific order).  No luck.
Does anyone know if there is an issue with BrightHouse and AirPorts?

Did you power down the modem and leave it off for at least 20min.. plus or minus.. say try 5min or try overnight.. but all cable services require the modem powered off so you can swap the router. That is because the first device to connect captures the public IP and is registered by MAC address to the ISP system. To get rid of that you need the modem off long enough for dhcp lease to reset..
You also should factory reset the TC to do this. It is really hard to change roles on the TC by simple manual changes. Start afresh. None of your backups will be altered.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
After a reset the TC will go back to router default mode.
Everything else on the network will also need rebooting. This is important to change over to the new router.
    Tell us how you go.
If you still have issues what model TC running what firmware??

  • Airport Express stole my PC connection from the Extreme

(I posted this in the Airport Extreme (802.11n) forum, with no replies, so I will see if I get any luck with it in here).
I recently got the new Airport Express with 802.11n, and have just got it all up and running. My setup is as follows:
Modem is wired to the Airport Extreme.
Airport Extreme is wired to one PC (running Vista).
Airport Extreme is in a WDS network connecting to an Airport Express wirelessly.
Airport Extreme SHOULD be connecting wireless to my Macbook, another PC (running Vista), and a laptop (running Vista).
Airport Express is solely for connecting an Xbox 360 to the ethernet port (for the time being).
What it looks like in the Airport Utility however is that the Airport Express is claiming the wireless clients (as they appear in the wireless clients list, whereas they don't appear in the same list on the Airport Extreme anymore). So what this seems to be doing to my network is letting all the wireless devices (minus the Airport Express which is the only wireless client listed on the Airport Extreme) connect to the Airport Express, thus creating a dual wireless network, which in turn slows my connection to the internet significantly.
All items on the network are set up with DHCP, coz quite frankly, setting up static IP's scares me, haha.
What I would like to do is get the Airport Extreme to pick up all the wireless devices, and the Airport Express to only act as a hub to plug my 360 into.
    Appreciate the impending help!
PS. I should also mention that the Express is set up as a Remote, not a Relay... and yet, that's what it's behaving like.
PPS. For what its worth, I had all my computers turned off, unplugged the Airport Express and Extreme. Turned on ONLY the Extreme, then all of the computers, and it wouldnt even pick up the network from the Extreme where previously (pre-Express) it was fine. As soon as I plugged the Express back in, bam, the computers can connect to the network again... but still through the Express!

Alright, I have solved the problem. So stupid, but I'll let people here know in the event they have the same issue.
On the Airport Express under the WDS tab, there is a tick box that's for "Allow wireless clients" which had to be unticked.... I'm guessing I was too tired last night to make logic of that, like I was thinking that it needed to be ticked in order for the Express to communicate with the Extreme. Apparently not.

  • After updating Time Capsule to 7.7.2, Airport Expresses can no longer connect

After I update the Time Capsule firmware to 7.7.2, my three Airport Expresses can no longer connect to the Time Capsule (their orange lights blink and they appear inaccessible in the Airport Utility). When I downgrade, they are able to connect fine.
They are connecting to the Time Capsule over my 5GhZ wireless network.
    Any help?

  • Airport needs to be on to stream from iTunes

I have a network with a Time Capsule as my DHCP server. I use one LAN connection to connect to a Netgear gig switch. Two of the computers in the house are connected to this switch. From one port on the switch I have an ethernet line that runs to behind my TV so I can have a connection for Apple TV and the satellite dish box. From the switch behind the TV I ran an ethernet line to the iTunes Server in the basement. Before I got the Tim Capsule I had an Airport Snow and I was able to stream from the iTunes Server over ethernet to the airport and then signal went from there to the four Airport Expresses. With the Time Capsule I have only been able to stream if I have the Airport turned on the iTunes Server. Any idea how I can get back to using ethernet to stream to Time Capsule?

If you use "Preferred Networks," instead of "Automatic" for your "By default, join" setting, try the following:
    - Delete all preferred networks with encryption
    - Add them again after manually connecting
(Note: It will be faster if you turn on "Automatically add new networks to preferred networks list" under "Options" of the AirPort network connection.)

  • Airport needs to be told what to do

When I boot my G5 mac or my wife's ibook neither will automatically connect to the wireless network we always use (apple airport express network in our house). They have to be pointed to the network even though it is the only one listed in our prefered networks pane.
I have a powerbook that finds the network automatically but can't figure out what the difference is in the setup of these three computers.
    Can anyone help?

  • Airport Extreme Base Station to connect MacBook Pro to internet?

With a new MacBook Pro do I need an Airport Base station or something other purchase (product) to connect to the internet wirelessly while I travel?
Thank you very much in advance for your time in this matter.

    Duane is correct.
The wireless is built in. Whoever you are connecting to will have a base station. If you want wireless at home you need a base station connected to your internet connection.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Express will no longer connect

I have an Airport Express base station. It has worked fine until I moved, and tried to set it up again in my new apartment. It has been configured with a new network, location, etc. The amber light blinks, so it's ready, but the light never turns green. According to the Airport toolbar, I have full connection with that new network, but I really don't, and can't connect to the internet. Resetting it has done nothing. Help me.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Hi and welcome to Discussions Hofffette,
Have you tired to do a Power Cycle your Airport Express? Unplug your Airport Express from its power source and wait 10 seconds and plug it back in...wait 3 minutes and see if it works.
If not then try a Hard Reset or Factory Reset:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044
then you will need to use Airport Setup Assistant to reconfigure the Airport Express.

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • I need help configuring a connection with asdm 5.2 for asa

    Hi All
I am very much a novice with asdm 5.2 for asa and I urgently need to configure a connection but don’t know how to. I have 2 domains at work and someone is trying to connect their sql client from their pc in one domain to the sql server in the other domain (DMZ).
When he tries to connect he gets the error
Cant connect to MySql Server at "IP Address" (10060)
He is trying to connect on port 3306. Could anyone please give me any tips on how i can resolve this quickly? I know i am
trying a shortcut on this one but I recently started a new job and thrown in the deep end here and need to learn this asdm 5.2 for asa product from scratch with nothing more than the manual that come with the cd . My Cisco knowledge is from 2001 when i did half of a ccna course.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi,
I'm not a security specialist but here is how I had it set up at home:
Essentially a NAT and a rule forwarding the port are needed. In this particular case I had an Oracle server running and a person requested remote access. So, for example, the source address was his external IP and the destination was the Oracle's external IP. For the NAT the source was the internal IP of the Oracle server and the interface was Outside.
Hope this points you in the right direction.

  • Wifi as car remote - manual connect

My car (a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV) has its own SSID which is used to connect and operate f.ex pre heating.
My phone connects to this wifi-network just fine, but then stays connected until I connect to another wifi-network, turn off wifi or deletes the network from my phone.
What I want is to keep auto connect as default for all networks, but I want to be able to set manual connect for some networks, f.ex my car's Wifi. I also need to be able to do a disconnect from the car's network when I am finnished operating it, as I want to use 3G when in the car without the hazle of turning Wifi off and then remember to turn it on again when I am no longer in the car.
IOS seems to have auto connect on or off for all wifi-networkc as the only option, and no disconnect function exists as far as I can see.

I only partly understand your answer
1: "There is no way to do what you want." - ok, then I request a change in IOS. Who can handle this?
2: "Why does it have to auto disconnect?" I have not written that it disconnects! I want to manually disconnect to be able to use 3G. And I want to mannually connect to this network - no auto connect for this network.

  • HT1515 Can I use two Airport Express, one being the connection to my Internet Provider and the second one, being an extension to my wifi?

I would like to know if with them I could use one Airport Express as the connection point to my ISP and the second one, just to extend the wifi range. Anyone knows about this ?

    Yes you can.
But, remember that the AirPort Express is a router only. It does not have a modem on board, so you will need a modem to connect to your ISP.
Then, connect one Express to the modem and configure it to "create" a wireless network".
Configure the second Express to "extend" a wireless network.
