Airport network not joining automatically

After changing out a modem and reconfiguring the airport extreme, all computers in the house (including iPhones and and a windows computer automatically connect to my home network, EXCEPT my G5, which says none of my preferred networks is available; asks me to join a network, shows the home network, and connects once I select the network (it's the only one showing). This never happened this way before, and all the settings indicate it should join automatically. Any help out there?

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately, after following the instructions, the same phenomenon occurred. At start up (or recovery from sleep), a dialogue box appears that says "None of your preferred networks are available. Select the network you want to join and enter a password if required" My preferred network is shown, and I select it and the password is populated automatically, and when I hit enter, I am joined to the network, but it will not join without this procedure each time. As I said, all other computers join automatically, and, oddly enough, this G5 also joined automatically yesterday after installing the new modem and reconfiguring Airport. Today, however, I have to log in each and every time. Anything else I can try? All "remember this network" boxes are checked.

  • Airport Network not reconnecting automatically at computer start

    Hi everybody,
Just purchased a new Airport Express because the old one was failing often.
At each start of the computer, I find a window : "None of your preferred network is available " with the list of all WiFi networks in the neighborhood.
Mine is listed as well, so I have to select it and click " JOIN" .
The previous Airport Express was not doing this. Did I miss a setting ?
    Thank you in advance
    Alain

    Please try the following:
    1. Delete Preferred Network(s)
    o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Under "Preferred Networks," delete the network(s) you regularly use from the list.
    2. Delete AirPort Keychain Entries
o Launch the "Keychain Access" application located in Applications/Utilties.
o Click on the "Kind" filter at the top, and look for any "AirPort network password" entries...and delete them.
o Restart, or log out then back in.
    3. Add Preferred Network(s)
    o System Preferences > Network > AirPort > Advanced > AirPort tab
o Add the preferred network(s) using the "+" button.
o Restart or log out then back in.

  • I installed a new wifi router and airport will not connect automatically to it. It sees the network but will not connect unless I tell it to.

I installed a new wifi router and airport will not connect automatically to it. It sees the network but will not connect unless I tell it to. I can't find anywhere in the utility or network preferences that will allow me to choose this router as the default. How do I fix this? BTW I'm using Lion.

Are there any previous networks that you have used that have the same password as Molly?  YES
Using System Preferences > Network > AirPort Advanced again, you need to remove any listings of previous networks that used the same password as Molly. Click the name of the network and click the - (minus) button at the bottom of the list of connections.
Also delete any other networks (except Molly at the top of the list) that might have used the same name...Molly in the past.
Delete any other networks that you no longer need so that your Mac will search for networks more quickly
    Click OK, then click Apply
Open KeyChain Access and look for a listing of any old networks that you no longer need. Click to highlight the name of the network, then click the Delete Key on your computer.
Then look for any old networks that might have used the name Molly in the past and do the same for them.
Then look for any old networks that might have used the same password as the password for your "new" Molly network and delete them in the same way
Click the KeyChain Access menu just next to the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the computer screen
and then click KeyChain First Aid
Enter the main administrator password for the Mac you are using and highlight the Repair button. Then click Start. You will see a message that repairs have been completed
    Quit Keychain Access
Power down the entire network...all devices...order is not important
Power up the modem first, then your main router, the other devices one at a time
Log on to Molly and see if the Mac remembers it after a few tries. If not, I'm afraid that you will need to change the name of the wireless network and password on your router due to corruption issues on the Mac. You have done everything possible without re-installing the complete operating system.

  • Network locations: not joining automatically

I just loaded my G5 w/ Leopard and I'm having trouble w/ network locations. I am trying to set up 2 locations, the first is "network" and the second is "stand alone". The intention is to be able to jump on & offline easily. The problem I'm having is when I switch from "stand alone" back to "network", I don't automatically join my airport network, like I always did in earlier versions of OS X. Since I have a hidden network, I have to type the full name and password back in. I notice the network dialogue now says "known networks will be joined automatically" which I think is different than Tiger where you had to select "join automatically".
    Any advice is appreciated!

I'm seeing this same issue on my wife's iBook G4, but strangely my MacBook doesn't have this issue. Both of us are running Leopard with the About the Login & Keychain Update 1.0 update and connecting to the same Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station with Personal WPA2. The update hasn't helped on the iBook and the problem has never shown up on the MacBook. I hope Apple fixes this soon.

  • New iMac wifi slow on Airport network, not on Fastweb

I just replaced our old iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz, Airport Extreme Card 802.11 a/b/g/n - OS 10.6.8) a new refurbished iMac 27-inch (late 2012) (OS 10.8.4).  The new computer works great, except with wifi - it is painfully slow on our Airport network, even though the old iMac still runs perfectly fast on that network.
We have two wifi networks in our house (in Rome, Italy).  Our internet comes in through the Italian company Fastweb, and its wireless router limits us to only 3 devices.  Both computers have fast internet connectivity when we hook up one (or both) to our Fastweb network (802.11g).  But that's not a good long-term solution because we need our main computer to talk wirelessly with other devices (like our printer and speakers running off an Airport Express booster).
So for the last three years we have also had an Airport base station (802.11n) based off the Fastweb network. We use the Airport network to connect most of our devices (including iMac, MacBooks, printer, iPads, iPhones, and two Airport Extremes -- one for speakers in the next room, and another to boost the signal throughout the house).  For some reason, the new iMac is painfully slow when it connects to our Airport network -- it can take 2 minutes to load a web page on the Airport network, which takes 2 seconds to load on the Fastweb network.  I would've thought that the problem lay with our Airport network, except that it's still plenty fast with our other computers.  The only problem seems to be the new iMac talking to the Airport network.
Could the problem lie with the Airport Extreme card in the new iMac?  It is a refurbished machine, not new.  Should I just be taking the machine into the nearest Apple Store?  We did buy AppleCare . . . .
Thanks very much for any ideas!

  • TM AIRPORT NETWORK NOT 'SEEING' WINDOWS7 COMPUTER IN SHARED IN FINDER?

I have a TM Airport network with an iMac and MacBook Air all working fine. Would like to have Windows7 computer show in SHARED section of Finder. Windows computer is able to use WiFi Airport connection to get online. But does not showing as SHARED.
What WINDOWS and MAC settings are needed to see Windows computer in SHARED?
    Thanks

First, can other Windows PCs access the share that you created on this PC? ... or is it just your Mac that cannot?
If it's just the Mac, then please try adding the Windows's Workgroup name that you are using in the Mac's System Preferences > Network > WINS tab. Be sure to enter it exactly as it is defined for the PCs. For example, if the Workgroup name is: WORKGROUP, enter it that way on the Mac.
The NetBIOS Name field should already be pre-populated with your Mac's Computer Name.
The WINS Servers field would only be required if you are running a WINS server.

  • Help - Airport network not working - confused!!

Hello, I wonder if anyone out there can help. I have got a problem with my airport network that doesn't make any sense and I havent seen another post with the same problems.
I have an imac G5 with 10.3.9. I have a wireless network set up, with an airport wireless card and two ax boxes (the second was bought later to boost the signal when we moved the Mac to another room). Initially it set up fine and worked for about 8-9 months. Then I noticed the second ax started behaving strangely. It would occasionally turn from 'green' to flashing amber for no reason - often after it had been on for a while. Turning it off and on did not change anything. Usually though it would work again the next day after being off all night. This continued to happen randomly until a couple of months later it switched to flashing amber continually.
I thought it had 'lost' the network so I tried using the airport set up assistant to reconnect it. However the set up assistant does not recognise ax number 2 any more, so I am not able to reconnect it. At the moment I am running off a faint signal from ax number 1.
I also tried setting up a completely new network from scratch. Again the new network is fine from the base ax bx but ax number 2 is still not recognised by my mac.
I also have a wireless printer connected to the network which does not work any more. This is where things became more confusing. The printer needs a boost signal to operate so when my booster ax went wrong the printer would not work. So I moved the printer and mac nearer ax number 1 to ensure it would pick up the network. However it still didn't work. So I attempted to set up the printer as wireless again, thinking it had become 'disconnected' somehow. However during installation you have to select the network to connect to. The computer would not pick up the apple network at all from ax number 1, yet it easily recognises our neighbours network from the flat above us. Strangely when I tried turning on the faulty ax box, the printer set up program picked up the faulty ax and not the original ax. But obviously I can't use the printer from the faulty ax box because it doesnt connect to the rest of the network.
So now I am confused. I am not sure what has gone wrong and what I need to replace. Originally I thought it was the second ax box that had gone wrong. But as the printer software can identify the second ax box I am not sure that this is the problem. Could there be something wrong with the airport card? I have checked that the card is properly connected and there is nothing visibly wrong there.
If anyone can help - please reply as I am going crazy here with things not working and don't know what to do next.
    Thanks, Wrenster

    Hello Wrenster,
I understand why you are confused, I was too while reading your post. However I have the solution for you. I believe you are a victim of environmental interference. Someone in your neighborhood just moved in with a another network, someone had a baby and is using a baby monitor, or maybe a local ham radio operator just got his license. Who knows!
This is what you need to do. Get all the devices in the same room and preform a hard restart on each one them per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=108044. Remember to preform a hard restart! After performing a hard restart on all three devices check the wireless networks available. You should have 3 ( one main and 2 airport expresses) ( or two depending on how many airports you own, I am not sure from your post). If you don't have the correct amount you may a bum base station and it may need to be replaced. But if you have the correct number of wireless networks ( Apple network XXXXXXX), use the airport admin utility ( inside of the utility folder ) to locate the main base station and configure it.
You will know when you are on the configuration page when you can read Name, Contact and Location.
First change the name to the location of the main base station, ie; it is the den so name should read DEN. leave the contact and location alone. On the bottom half of the page is where you create your network, so under network name change it to your desired network name ie; when others come over to my house I have them select COWSWEAT from the network list.
Second click on the change wireless security and set the security to WEP 128 BIT and make your password. Once you have configured a successful password be sure to click on the lock on the main configuration page ( the one with password under it) to get the HEX password for your PC friends.
Third ( we are almost done ) Select the WDS tab at the top and enable this base station as a main station. Select allow other wireless client on this base station as well. Now on that empty list box below click the plus sign to the right to add other base stations to this WDS network. From here you should be able to select the other 2 base station that we have not configure yet ( but preformed a hard restart on). After you have added them ( be sure the check box for auto configure is selected) they should read in the list that was empty on the WDS page.
Now update this should start the update process and may take 5-10 mins, it should provide a summery pop-up when with each station is done.
( Also you may get a message that there is update for the base station, please preform the updates for the selected base stations)
Now when it is completed check to see how many networks you have available ( it should only be one ). Select the network and confirm that all of your base stations appear under the select a base station in Airport admin utility, then move them back to their homes around the house. Giving them 45 secs to restart they should turn green if not , they could out of range of each other or the environmental interference could be affecting them. So you my need to rearrange them until they all green.
    Good Luck,

  • Airport card not joining Networks with passwords?

    Hi everyone,
I'm having this problem where my computer WILL NOT let me join any network with a WPA password or WEP.
It only works when I take off the password to my router, and I don't want people stealing my internet.
I installed every update I could possibly do, but still nothing.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I used a decent password and it was converted to abunch of random numbers, I entered those in three possible ways
(without spaces, with spaces, with all the letters not capitalized, with them all capitalized, etc)
and it STILL WON'T LET ME IN!!!!!
on the WPA whenever I put the password in it does the same, won't let me in.
It had WPA2 which was WPA compatible.
    and it's a belkin N+ router.

  • Airport network not remembered after restart or sleep after upgrading from OS X 10.5 to OS X 10.6.8

I upgraded OS X 10.5.8 to OS X 10.6.8.  Now after sleep or restart my wireless network is not remembered nor automatically connected to.  I have to select "Other" and enter network name and WPA2 password each time even though "Remember this network" is checked.  Using Airport Utility 5.5.3. Other computer on same network but still using OS X 10.5.8 does not have this problem.

You will need two things - the 10.6.3 retail DVD, and the 10.7 USB installer. Once you install 10.6, run Software Update to get yourself up to 10.6.8.

If you can go to 10.8 instead of 10.7, I'd recommend it. It's cheaper, and a much better OS (you get full iCloud functionality, for one thing).

  • Timed access on airport network not working

I've set up a schedule on my airport extreme/express WDS network as accurately as I can. But my daughter on a windows machine can still access the internet through this???
Please tell me what I've done wrong.

No I have the AP extreme set up as a WDS main and the AP express as the participant.
I have the MAC address of both the laptop I wnat to limit and the APexpress limited on time. The Laptop doesnt have the range to reach the APextreme base station.
When I look at the access control in the AP express there is no option for timed access.

  • Ipad 2 ios 6 airport networks not working

I have around 19 ipad2 that i supervise with apple configurator.
Today i programmed approx 16 of the using configurator, it automatically upgraded then to ios6 even though i told it to use ios 5.1.1
Now when i connect them to any of our airport express's its says its connected on the wifi page, but i get no connection shown in the satus bar at the top.  i know they are negotiating with the airports because its assigns them a IP address. But i cannot connect with the vnc devices i have connected to the LAN port of the airport.
I know the airport is functioning as i still have a few ipads running ios 5.1.1 and they connect fine.
    Someone help.

What iOS do you  have? The iOS only has limited backwards compatibility and that could be part of the issue. It's quite common for mac computers, iTUnes mac programs, iDevices to all have a limited range of total intercompatibility....in other words, they only go 'back' so far. If you upgrade one part you have to upgrade the rest (even if 'rest' is nothing but a PC, iTUnes and the iDevice)
If your 2 is up to iOS6 then it's very possible that you have to upgrade to iTUnes 11.

  • Can't Add a Password to Airport Network

With old PowerBook, password caused problems. With New MacBook, I want to add a password, but can't.
System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced > dbl-click on network name, set security to WPA 2 Personal, Click OK, click Apply, job done. Log out, log in, the Airport network is joined automatically, no password asked for, no padlock next to network name.
Go back to Network prefs, Security is back to 'None'.
    Anyone know what's going on?

It is when you do it right.
Wireless security is implemented in the router, not the computer. The computer just logs in to the wireless network.

  • MacBook will not join Airport network

I am flummoxed. My MacBook will not join my Airport Extreme network. It was fine this morning. I have restarted the MacBook. I have restarted the Airport base station. My iPhone is connecting to the network fine. My TV is connecting to the network fine. My G4 is connecting to the network fine. So, it appears there is some issue with the MacBook itself. Any ideas what could be the issue?

First, either update your profile or your OS to 10.5.6. There have been many bug fixes since 10.5.2 and some WiFi updates require the latest Leopard version.
That being said, check your network preferences.
Do you have a rational IP Address?
If you are using an encrypted WiFi, you can temporarily turn off the encryption and see if the MB can join the network. If so, it's an encryption issue. If not, turn the encryption back on and we will have to look elsewhere.
BTW, you should be using WPA since WEP has long ago been compromised and is useless, but thats a side thing right now.
On the MB, I would run disk utility and repair permissions for starters.

  • PB G4 17 doesn't automatically join AirPort network

When I log out my user account or shut down the computer, once I fire it up again I have to manually select the AirPort symbol at the top of the screen (which is now grayed out) and select my household Air Port network. Once I do all is well until the next time I log out or shut down. Normal sleep and screensaver activity don't affect this, only shutdown or user log out.
It didn't used to do this. It started suddenly a few months ago, and I thought the upgrade to Tiger would fix it, but it hasn't.
What gives, and how do I fix it?
    Thanks in advance.

Robert, you can try adjusting the Network settings to join automatically.
Open System Preferences. Open Network Settings. You should see Network Status by default. Click the bar stating Network Status and choose AirPort. Make the AirPort Tab is highlighted.
You'll now see your AirPort ID number and a line below it saying
By default, join: and a pop up bar.
Via the pop up bar, make sure you have identified your Network correctly under Preferred networks or even better choose Automatic. Also, choose the Options button at the lower left and make sure the settings are correct for your setup. You should click to select Enable interference robustness this will help with the overall connection too.
    Good luck.
