Airport network problem

I have the following set up in a WDS network at home:
Airport Extreme (main base station)
Airport Express1 (Relay)
Airport Experss2 (Remote)
we have 3 mac in the house (1 PB and 2 iBooks).
The system seems to work fine and we can connect to the internet etc
Problems:
1) Randomly one or other of the computers gets knocked off the network and the network message reads Airport has self assinged IP and may not be able to connect to the internet. Machine IP goes to 169.254.xxx.xxx. Interestingly in Airport Admin Utility all the airports still show 14.1.132.xx IP addresses.
This is the main issue
2) Air Tunes on Airport2 works briefly (say 5-10 minutes) and then invariably stops.
I have the network set up on channel 6 and set to 802.11b/g. Could this be a problem?
I was wondering if you had any suggestions for me or if you have seen this problem before

Most likely problem is radio frequency interference. Try using channel 1 or 11 and see if this helps.
Unfortunately, a WDS (especially one with a relay and a remote) is going to be far more prone to problems with getting reliable data transmission than a non-WDS network. It is a known contributing cause to the Airtunes dropout problem (which you are also experiencing).

  • Airport networking problem

I have two iBooks on a wireless network (d-link router). One is a G4 and everything is great. The G3 however is the problem.
The G3 connects to the router fine and connects to the internet, so most of the time it is fine. The problems come when I try to connect the two together, for example to stream music through iTunes, share in iPhoto, or to mount the hard drive, try to print, etc. If I go to the network folder on the G3, the G4 will show up but when I try to connect I get "the server is not operational at this time, check the name and ip address" or something like that.
Now if I go to the network folder on the G4, the G3 will show up and when I try to connect it says "looking up 'computername.local'..." with the spinning beachball of death.
Also I have problems connecting the two computers directly in a computer to computer network. I create a network on the G4, but when I try to connect to it with the G3 I get "error connecting to network" So it doesn't seem to be the router.
I am pretty sure the problem is with the G3 because my girlfriend has another G4 iBook essentially identical to mine and her computer can connect perfectly to the G4.
The most annoying thing is that everything used to work fine and I can't remember changing anything significant on either of the computers.
So does anybody have any ideas. Please. Thank you.
    Cheers,
    Brandon

My first post on this forum.
I am using a Netgear router DG834G, a G3 snow iMac (OS10.3.9) as the base station, and a Dell PC is connected wirelessly to that. No problems at all.
I now want to connect an indigo Clamshell G3 iBook to the base station.
The iBook is using Airport and running OS 9.2.2, and shows a strong router signal. The iBook TCP/IP has automatically updated all the values using DHCP, and the Router data page shows the iBook as "Connected", as well as its IP number (192.168.0.4). There is no encryption set up yet.
The iBook has a pull down window called "Base stations" but the Netgear router is NOT shown in it. The box is empty, so I guess that's why I can't connect! The default base station IP address (which I keep changing to the correct one) is 10.0.1.1. My router is 192.168.0.1. The previous base station IP address still comes up, and I can't change it permanently. I don't have any password when prompted, (I tried the default one "public" ) so is that the main problem or is it something else? I haven't seen this problem mentioned.
It seems as if I am 99% ready for internet conection
Thanks for your help. I've spent two days at it.

  • Airport Network Problems

Hello, I apologize if this Q has already been answered but I searched and so far found nothing.
I am running OSX (10.4.8) on my Macbook,iBook G4 and 10.4.6 on my Dual G4 MDD, I have an Airport Extreme Base Station (2 Ethernet ports,1=WAN, 1=LAN) hardwired to a Cable Modem and Time Warner Roadrunner Service.
I have had this setup for the last 3 or 4 years and had very little problem with it most solved with a Restart or Recycle of power.
Since I bought a Macbook last summer I have had a few issues that I managed to solve myself. Recently I have not been able to sign onto my Network from my Macbook WHEN I am in the room were the Base Station resides even though that same room is were my Desktop Dual G4 MDD resides and had no problem getting on . When I go into another room and select my Network from the Airport list a Warning comes up that says;- "The Selected Network uses an Access List to restrict access and this computer is not on the list, see Admin for Access" sometimes if I hit "Try Again" a few times it connects. How do I access and update this list???
I can always connect to an open Network that's in my building on all computers including my wifes G3 Pismo (OSX).
Now the same thing is happening on all my machines and I cannot get onto my Network at all. I have tried recycling the power on the Base Station and Cable Modem also Repairing Disk Permissions and Restarting the Macbook.
Then I reset the Base Station (reset button on rear) and my Network comes back for about 5 mins on all my machines then the same thing happens over again. every time I reset the Base Station I can get onto my Network but like I said for only a few minutes. I am writing this post on the Open Network in my building as I mentioned above.
It may be coincidence but the only thing I have changed about my setup is that I added the Macbook last summer... Don't tell me I have to throw my Macbook against the wall cos I love it !!!
Sorry for such a long post and I really appreciate any help
    cheers

now when I try to join the network through the Airport Setup assistant it says:
The assistant was unable to connect you to the wireless network you selescted.
Please make sure that you are in range of the base station and that it is turned on.
The computer sees the network, but then that message comes up...

  • Problem with 2 computers Airport network

While long time comfortable with Mac, I am novice with Airport/network.
I have a MacMini (with Airport card) and a new PowerBookPro (15" 2.2 Intel Core 2 Duo and Airport card). I have new Airport Extreme Base device and I have successfully set up wireless internet connection for both computers.
I have also successfully through Airport set up so my mini connects with MBP/sees the MBP on the Mini desktop, etc..
My problem is that I haven't done the +correct rain dance+ so that the MBP connects to see my Mac mini on the MBP.
No clue what is being done wrong, except: In Finder of Mini under Go --> Network the MBP is listed and I then connect through steps of that window.
However, on the MBP Finder under Go --> Network, I just get a "flash" and no menu window is displayed at all.
Strange to me that computer network gods are so easily accommodating one way (Mini connects with MBP via Go/Network) and totally absent in reverse (no connect of MBP via Go/Network with Mini).
I hope someone can guide me through the correct ritual so that the 2 computers can go both ways. TIA.

    I solved my problem!
Looking in other discussion forums, I found workaround for the fact that when on MBP/Finder/Go/Network all I got was a flash and no window.
The recommended solution worked! To simply logout and then login on that MBP. This restored the Go windows and Network window showing my MacMini to connect with.
So now both computer go both ways.

  • Airport Network Options Problem

    Hi All
I have just upgraded from 10.3 to 10.4.5 and have found a problem with the Airport Network prefs pane which I can't fix. Originally the interface to the Airport Networks pane was not showing correctly and was still setup as in 10.3. I only noticed this as I had another Mac running 10.4 and was copying the settings from it. The only way to fix this was to delete the Locations and start from scratch. After doing this everything seemed okay apart from the Options button in the Airport settings. When pushed it doesn't open anything. I don't want to do a reinstall for such a small problem so does anyone else know of a quick fix to solve this?
    Thanks

  • How do I solve connection problems with Windows-PCs on a AirPort network?

I have a AirPort network with 1 AP Extreme (dual band)  in bridge modeextended with two dualband AP Express and one 1st gen. AP Express. With only Macs all computers connect without problem, but when introducing PCs running Windows (7 or 8) on my wireless network both Windows and Macs often get problems getting an IP-adress from my router. When resetting my router problem is solved for a while.
    Anyone with a solution?

You're going to have to be more specific with the issues, errors and diagnostic messages that you are encountering, and what particular configuration you are seeing to establish.
Screen sharing is available from Mac to Mac, and from Windows once you load a VNC client on the Windows box such as TightVNC or some other VNC client, and configure and connect it.
Here are some notes on getting Windows file clients to connect to a Mac OS X Server SMB Samba file server; you have to drop some of the Windows security requirements to allow it to connect to the Mac OS X Server box.
Microsoft Office Outlook isn't traditionally used with mail servers other than Microsoft Exchange Server.  (While Outlook was good with Exchange Server and has likely gotten better over the years, it was classically rather poor when working with SMTP servers.)  More commonly, Outlook Express (and now called Windows Mail) is used for this, or Mozilla Thunderbird, or another SMTP-capable mail client.
One of the first things you will want to ensure here is correct and functional DNS on your LAN; other services are entirely dependent on DNS, and your ISP DNS cannot provide valid DNS for a LAN behind a NAT device.  Launch Terminal.app and issue the command sudo changeip -checkhostname and see if you get an indication that DNS is correct and no changes are required, or that there are DNS errors.  (You will need to enter an administrative password for the sudo command to be accepted.)
To connect and use a mail server on the Internet, you'll need to have a public static IP address and a correct public DNS configuration, or (far less desirably, and rather more complex) a way to tunnel from a non-static IP address over to a mail gateway service of some sort.  Having static IP and correct DNS is the usual approach.

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

  • Airport network start up problem

As I'm setting up my new Airport Extreme with Time Capsule, all is good until I attempt to join the wireless network I've created. Then I get the Unable to Join Airport Network window. My wife's PC connects with no problem and I'm using a PC on an Ethernet line from the same ISP right now. So, any idea why the IMac can't connect to the Airport?

Hello Roxy and welcome to the Apple forums.
First we need to know what you have.
    1. Airport Extreme Base Station
    or
    2. Time Capsule
The above 2 units are different.
Do you have both? or just one?

  • Extreme Network Problem - Ethernet versus Airport

I will try to make this problem/question simple.
I have a home network with various computers around the house. I have an Ethernet switch in the closet, and various nodes running throughout the house to various rooms.
Also attached to my switch is a Time Capsule, which is used to create a wireless network and distribute DHCP addresses to other wireless computers in the house.
I also have an Airport Extreme in my home office that is configured, via Airport Utility, to extend the Time Capsule network, and is on the home network wirelessly. In other words, the Extreme is not hard-wired to the network with an Ethernet cable.
I have two Ethernet printers connected to the Extreme in my home office (by Ethernet cable), which I wish to use as network printers throughout the house.
In my home office, my iMac is hard wired to Ethernet, but also has the capability for an airport connection. I prefer, of course, to use the Ethernet, for speed reasons.
Here is my problem/question: In my home office, I can only print to the two Ethernet printers connected to the Extreme if my iMac is on the home network via its Airport setting (in other words, Airport is above Ethernet in the network connections order). In that case, the printers print fine.
If, however, I switch the iMac’s network connection to Ethernet (by setting the service order to put Ethernet above Airport), I cannot print to the two Ethernet printers connected to the Extreme - I get caught in the “attempting to connect to host...” mode.
First question: Why is this? The Ethernet and Airport network settings appear the same, except for the computer’s IP address (i.e., the subnet and router addresses are the same on Ethernet as on Airport). Seems to me that if the printers are on the network, they are on the network.
Second question: Even if I am on Ethernet (and therefore cannot print to the printers attached to the Extreme), the two printers attached to the Extreme do show up in the Print & Fax window. In other words, I can select them and add them as printers, but I just can’t then print to them.
What am I missing here? Shouldn’t I be able to print from the iMac when it is on the network via Ethernet? If not, why not?
I can always, of course (I guess), attach the Extreme to the network via an Ethernet cable from its WAN port to avoid the problem. But that would require running a LONG Ethernet cable, drilling holes in the top of my desk and bottom of a bookcase, etc., and I don’t wish to do that.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks..

Yes, it’s Verizon FiOS coming into the modem, the modem to the switch. Make and model unknown, but don’t see how that would be an issue here.
I am trying to ascertain, whether or not, your entire network is on the same subnet. If you are using an Ethernet switch and not an Internet router (with a built-in Ethernet switch) directly connected to the modem, then your basic network will not work ... as the modem is only expecting a single device to be connected to it.
If you had the TC directly connected to the modem, and then, the Ethernet switch connected to one of the TC's LAN ports to provide additional network nodes throughout the house this would be workable.

  • Daisy Chained Airport Network Wireless Client Problem

It's a long distance from my cable modem to the last area in my house I want to establish a wireless network in, so I set up a three-Airport network, with a Time Capsule at the cable modem, connected to an Airport Extreme (wirelessly), which is connected to another Extreme (wirelessly). Airport Utility shows the three in a chained arrangement:
The problem I'm having is that the last Airport won't allow any wireless clients. It does allow several devices to connect to it with a wired connection, just fine. Any suggestions how I can allow the last Airport to extend my network wirelessly as well as wired?

When I add a few clients to the list with their Mac addresses and change the Unlimited settings to No Access, the Airport Express stops working.
The last AirPort is configured to "join" the wireless network....even if you think that it might be set to "extend" a wireless network. In this type of configuration, the last AirPort provides no wireless signal extension.....but.... the Ethernet ports are enabled.
If you want the last AirPort to extend the wireless signal coverage, it will need to be connected using a wired Ethernet connection to your main router.....or.....it will need to be moved much closer to the Time Capsule if you want to try to extend wirelessly.
Maybe they're all really connected in a hub-spoke arrangement after all, and Airport Utiity is just showing them wrong?
No, they are not configured in a hub-spoke setup. If they were, then both of the AirPort Extremes would  be displayed as connecting directly to the Time Capsule.

  • "No airport networks were found" - setup problem

I'm trying to setup a new airport network with an AEBS. I plugged it in to the outlet and then plugged the cable modem ethernet cable into the AEBS. The light turns green. Then I open Airport Setup Utility and get the following message:
    "No airport networks were found"
I then opened the Airport Admin Utility, and it is also unable to see the AEBS.
    Any suggestions?

Okay, I updated the firmware to 6.3 and am now able to see the AEBS network. However, I can't connect to the Internet using the network I created in the Admin Utility.
The Network control pane says Aiport is active and connected to the Internet, but I can't get online. I have a Comcast cable high-speed Internet. I'm not exactly sure what my settings should be in Network?

  • How to connect a Sony Bravia TV to the internet through your Airport network

Since it took me a lot of time to figure out how to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the internet through my Airport network, I better share how to do it. Hopefully saving others a lot of time.
My 32EX600 Sony Bravia TV is Ethernet connected to my Mac Mini, which is part of my Airport network, together with another Mac, an Airport Extreme Base Station and an ADSL modem/router. Moreover, the Mac Mini is connected to the TV by HDMI.
Whatever I tried in the TV’s Wired Network Set-up (Auto, or Manual with manual IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS IPs), I couldn’t get it right. Cable Connection and Local Access were mostly OK, Internet Access always Failed.
The solution lies in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences of the Mac Mini. In the Internet Sharing item of that panel, you should choose to “share your internet connection from WiFi to computers (the TV in this case) using Ethernet“, and NOT (as I had chosen before and seemed so obvious) “share your internet connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet“. After that change, the Bravia Network Set-up, using the Wired and Auto options, flawlessly connected to the internet. No expensive (Sony) WiFi USB dongle needed.

I have now had a detailed reply from Sony Europe and the way to do this is to:
    1.       Press Home on the TV Setup
    2.       Use the right and left arrow to select Setting.
    3.       Use the up and down to select Network, press Enter.
    4.       Select Network Setup.
    5.       Select Wireless setup.
    6.       Select Scan
    7.       Select your network
    8.       A new screen will appear asking for entering the security key.
    9.       Enter your WPA2 key.
    10.   Select Enter.
    11.   It will take you back to the same screen asking for entering the
    security key.
    12.   Press the right arrow.
    13.   Select Auto.
    14.   Press the right arrow.
    15.   Select Save and connect.
These instructions are not the same as shown on the TV but they worked fine for me so they may help others with a similar problem.

  • New Airport Network - issues with some specific features

    Hello,
I have just changed my wifi system for an Airport Network, with one AirPort Extreme and 2 AirPort Express. The goal was to extend the wifi network to the entire house. Everything is fine, all my computers are able to connect to the network and are able to access the internet. The AirPort Network is connected to the internet with the PPPoE procedure.
The issue is very specific here.
    1. I use Outlook 2007 to handle my e-mails. Since I have shifted to the AirPort Network, Outlook is not able to connect to pop server anymore for 4 of my 5 accounts. Hotmail (pop) is functionning alright but Gmail is blocked !
    2. Windows Update is also unable to connect to the appropriate server.
Maybe there is more but it's all I have noticed so far. I have not changed a single parameter by myself on my computers and both are affected the same way.
I first thought it was a firewall issue but disabling my software firewall (Bullguard) did not change anything. Vista Firewall is not active. Maybe is it the internal firewall of the AirPort Extreme ? But that would not explain why Outlook can send messages (smtp works fine).
Any idea or similar experience ? Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    AdG

Maybe my problem is just bad luck ! I might have shifted to my new network
the wrong day. One day earlier, I would not have seen any difficulty... if this is it.
    Quakes slow cyber connections
By Zhu Shenshen | 2009-8-18 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
SHANGHAI'S international Internet connections slowed significantly yesterday after earthquakes rocked Taiwan and southern Japan. It was unclear last night how long repairs might take. Millions of Chinese Netizens were unable to connect to overseas Websites or use popular online chat tools yesterday afternoon.
About 15 million MSN instant message users in Shanghai and other parts of China were affected as the main servers are in the United States. Connections to most overseas Websites including those run by Yahoo and the New York Times were also clogged.
The chain of events that led to the service disruption had its origin in Typhoon Morakot, which struck Taiwan on August 7 and led to a later breakdown in an undersea telecommunications cable system.
Local Internet traffic was not influenced because transmissions were routed to a backup channel. But that cable failed yesterday near Busan, South Korea, apparently the victim of the earthquakes, according to China Unicom.
The failure affected Asian communications to the US and Europe.
The epicenter of the first quake, which struck at 8:05am yesterday, was about 188 kilometers southeast of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast at a depth of 11km, the island's weather bureau said. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.7.
The second quake, which was centered close to the first at a depth of 20km and struck at 6:10pm, measured 6.1, the Taiwan weather bureau said. It was also felt in Japan's Ishigaki Island.
"We've sent a team to repair the broken cable, but we can't give a detailed timetable for when it will be completed," said Song Guixiang, a public relations official for China Telecom.
The schedule will depend heavily on weather conditions, Song said.
Repairs are handled by a team comprising the carriers that use the cable.
In most cases it takes one to two months to fully repair damaged undersea cables. In the meantime, telecom operators will try to reroute traffic to operating cables and satellite systems.
Domestic Internet connections and international call services were normal yesterday, the carriers said.

  • New Airport Extreme problems or DSL router problems

    Hi all,
List of what I have: Time Warner Cable (motorola modem) DSL, Latest Airport Extreme (with 2.4Ghz channel 5 & 5GHz channel 149) with the updated version 7.6.1, 2008 MBP4,1 with 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo with Mac OS X 10.5.8.
Now the problem, when I am on my MBP on the web internet slows to a stop, I will go to Systems Preferences, Network, (at this point Airport shows connected Full bars for the ant symble and a green light), then go to: Assist me... , I click Diagnostics, (On the left side) List: Airport (Green), Airport settings (green), Network Settings (green), ISP (either amber or red), Internet (either amber or red) and Server (amber or red).
So, basicly I keep looseing ISP, Internet and Server, now for the kicker, It does not happen every time i'm on my MBP or every day. But if it happens in the morning it will happen all day long.
This was happening with my old Airport Extreme so I up graded to the new one, worked without a problem for about a week, then started again reset & re installed several times changed channels (now back to default settings) I was hopeing that getting the new AE would take care of the problem so I coild start useing streaming TV but I'm not going to spend the money if I can't have the internet all the time.
By the way we just moved from one state to Maine never had this problem before, both area's are rural, & both are with TWC.
So the question is: do I have a TWC Modem problem or Airport Extreme Problem or is it just my MBP?
I have a Win7 desktop hard wired in, and my wife has an ipad2 but she is not home much and dosent seem to be around or on the web when this happens.
I am a serious NOVICE  so if you give advise please be very basic, Step by step!!!
    Thank you all in advance,
Not So Mad Max, But Getting there!!!!

P.S. I do have my AE set to be hidden with WPA2 set and a discoverable Guest also with WPA2 set!!
    Thanks

  • Slow file open and save across airport network

    Hello -
I just purchased an Airport Extreme base station and am having some problems. I could not seem to find an answer to this issue in the archives.
I have a small architecture firm and have 3 computers networked together (iBook G4, mac-mini, and Powermac G5). The G5 is our file server. A typical CAD file size is on the order of 10 mb. Since going wireless with the Airport Extreme, opening these files has become painfully slow - 2 minutes for a 11 mb file, for example.
All computers have a strong airport signal (four bars), and internet connection on all machines is fast.
    Security: WPA2
    Robustness: ON
Thanks for any help you may have to offer.

(I posted this elsewhere, hope this helps you as you did not have any responses. )
Big horrible slowdowns in file transfer over wireless have me pulling my (remaining) hair out.
I had given my Apple Airport base station (b) to my brother in Pakistan after I found a Belkin (g) at Staples for free (after rebates) and have been using it for a while. Not a pretty box but the price is beautiful and it works OK.
My real use for it is for my eMac and a couple of older PowerBooks I keep downstaors as a "music studio" for my music and podcast recording (and transferring upstairs to my server folder over wireless) and web browsing.
All worked OK as I would transfer the files to my PowerBook upstairs (connected Ethernet to a router connected to the wireless router or sometimes directly via Airport connection if laptop was not at my desk). Both configurations worked fine (only limitation being my eMac's (b) speed older Airport speed).
Since 10.4.5 (as that is the last "change" I can see made on my system overall, I have discpovered I cannot even transfer a 3.5 MB file from the eMac to ANY of the other machines. After reading several threads here it seems several people have noticed the HORRIBLE SLOWDOWN if not complete death of Airport usability for file transfer. People are being made to go around changing router settings, channel IDs etc.
That sounds like typical tech support bunk to me. After all, if the channel ID on the wireless router is a problem why is my web browing going on at normal speed but a 120 MB file transfer just told me it will take 2023642128 hours. No, I am not kidding. That is the time it would take to get man to Mars. Someone else was told to hook up the machines over Ethernet. Sure, that works for machines in the same room - and is a bearable temporary solution in that case - but not in an upstairs/downstairs situation. Burning CD-Rs to transfer 120 MB files every time is also not a good way to show off Apple technology.
So, in my humble opinion, some recent update from Apple just broke something in Airport networking or Appleshare. (Much like I have found out that DiskWarrior, a hard disk repair utility will crash after completing a current task unless you downgrade QuickTime from 7.0.4 or something to a lower version. Go figure.)
I love Apple, getting friends to switch all the time, but annoyed at these bugs that basically render standard applications unusable. So far I have not been able to figure out what the problem is.
I already deleted all the network port configurations on the eMac except wireless. Activity Monitor shows 0.1 to 11 kbps speed (yes, that is 0.1 to 11 Kbps not Mbps). No other apps are running, Tried connecting to different machines. All machines can transfer data at high speed except over Airport/wireless.
Hope you can suggest a solution when you find one.
    Imran
