Airport Network setup help or suggestions :)

Hi - first post
I currently have a Billion wireless router - 7404VGOX
Airport 2 TB Time Capsule - 4th Generation
Airport Extreme - 5th Generation
1 x MacBook Air with Mavericks
1 x Windows Laptop
1 x iMac
1 x Airprint Epson Printer
1 x Airprint HP Printer (which I can not get to connect!!!! something about MAC Filtering)
iphone, ipads & smart TV's etc
The wireless router is in the office along with the Time Capsule (which does Time Machine back ups) which is bridged and connected by ethernet
The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.
I have it set up as a roaming network.
Do you think this is the best set up, or would you suggest doing it differently?
I have a Smart TV with hard drive connected and a Media Centre with an inbuilt 2TB SATA drive, which were connected to the Billion before getting the Airport things.. Is there a way that everyone in the house can access the files on the media centre?
I have an old Airport express A1088, can anything be done with it?!?!
THanks sooooo much!!!

The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.

A roaming network is one in which the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme would be connected using a wired Ethernet connection.
Your setup cannot be a roaming network if.....The Extreme is in the other end of the house wirelessly extending.
Can your clarify on your setup?
Do you think this is the best set up, or would you suggest doing it differently?
A roaming network, with a wired Ethernet connection between wireless routers would be the best way to set up virtually any network, since there is no signal loss in a wire.....and a great deal of signal loss (and speed) in a wireless connection.
I have an old Airport express A1088, can anything be done with it?!?!
The old Express could be configured to create a wireless network if it were wired back to the Time Capsule.
It could also "join" the wireless network wirelessly for use with AirTunes....but it would not extend the wireless signal, since it does not have that capability.
In order to administer the older Express, you would need a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC.
Sorry, cannot help on the Smart TV - Media Centre question since I don't have that type of setup.

  • AirPort Network Setup Help

I'm pretty good with hardward, but admittedly, I'm kind of a n00b when it comes to wireless networks.  So I purchased an AirPort Extreme Base Station in 2010 and set it up to run my wireless network as well as a 5GHz version of the network as well.  Unfortunately, my modem is on the opposite side of the house as most of my wireless devices, i.e. PlayStation 3, MacBook Pro, etc...  I was noticing a weak signal, so I purcahsed an AirPort Express to extend the range of the existing network (not the 5GHz network, the regular one).  This was perfect, everything was running great.  Through my ISP I signed up for 10Mbps, I was getting high 9's in the room the modem was in, as well as accross the house on the extended network.
Fast forward two years later, Apple has released new Extreme and Express base stations, I'm not sure each update consisted of, and maybe the newer versions will work, so that's why I'm asking.  I got the new AT&T LTE iPad and I'm getting 38Mbps on my LTE network, yes, you read that right, a whopping 38Mbps!  Needless to say, I was preferring this over my home Wi-Fi Network, so I called up my ISP and requested 25Mbps, still slower, but at least I'm not eating up my data.  The network is set-up exactly the same way, I didn't change it.  Problem is, when I bring my iPad into the room with modem, I get 25Mbps, but when I'm back in my living area, on the extended network, I still only get 9 to 10Mbps   Considering I'm rarely in the room with the modem, it's as of I'm paying extra money for no additional bandwidth, which makes me a sad panda...   So, the question is, does my current Express not support 25Mbps or am I 'Doing it wrong.'  If I need to pay the $99 for another Express, I'd be happy too, but considering I bought the Extreme and Express at the same time, and the Extreme handles the 25 fine, I'm thinking I have it set-up incorrectly.  As I understand it, the only differences between Extreme and Express are that one is duel band, guest network is possible, more USB's and ethernet ports, etc...

  • Lackluster Dual Network Setup - HELP!

    Here's my setup:
    DSL
    I
    I
    AXBS (UFO) 2.4Ghz b/g --> PowerBook G4 (10.4.11); iPhone (Original)
    I
    I
    Time Capsule 5Ghz n (Bridged) --> MacBook Pro (10.5.4); MacBook (10.4.11 - n enabled)
The Time Capsule's Strength and Range is suppose to far exceed that of the older Base Station. When I'm near the location of the two transmitters the 5Ghz n is barely twice as fast as the 2.4Ghz b/g (tested with large file transfers between the 2 newer laptops, and then file transfers between the MacBook Pro and the older Powerbook). When I'm farther away the 5Ghz n drops away and the 2.4Ghz b/g remains relatively strong. Switching between the two networks when I'm at a distance strangely still shows full solid bars for both networks.
So does anyone have any suggestions or further question that might help me improve the speed and range of the newer Time Capsule? Thanks

    Just to update everyone:
Today I moved my whole dual network setup to a more centrally located spot in the house. This has definitely improved the coverage of the 2 network bands (n & b/g).
Additionally, since I only recently acquired the TC, I originally just added ("bridged") it off of my existing b/g network. With todays move, I decided to switch the 2 base stations and have the TC and its' "n" network the first connection off of the DSL router. Then reconfigured the older ABS Extreme (UFO) to "bridge" off the the TC. While I am convinced that I did not originally have the 2 networks co-mingled (as early speed tests confirmed), I seem to be experiencing improved internet speeds in the 5Ghz ("n") network. Could this be due to no longer "bridging" the TC through the older ABS Extremes' internal Ethernet switch?
As per Tesserax suggestion, I then did a Signal-to-Noise ration (SNR) survey of the house, and came up with some good results based on the SNR Guidelines in Tesserax comments above.
35 to 45 SNR throughout most of the house. About 25 SNR just outside in the patio where I was barely getting a connection before. Things have definitely improved. And I am very pleased. Clearly network speed is the advantage of 802.11n technology.
Nevertheless, my original observation still seems to apply. Here's why: Detached from the house is the garage and an office. As I moved out toward the office during the SNR survey (about 50 ft. away), the strength of the 5Ghz ("n") network dramatically dropped off, and was eventually non-existent inside the office. Yet I could switch over to the 2.4Ghz ("b/g") network and easily browse the internet.
Apple's marketing claims "AirPort Extreme delivers data transfer speeds up to five times those of previous-generation 802.11g wireless networks — while achieving up to twice the range."
Now I fully accept, as Apples' footnote states, "Based on a comparison with Apple's 802.11g products. Comparison assumes AirPort Extreme network with 802.11n-enabled computer. Speed and range will be less if an 802.11a/b/g product joins the network. Accessing the wireless network requires an AirPort- or AirPort Extreme-enabled computer or other Wi-Fi Certified 802.11a/b/g-enabled computer. Actual performance will vary based on range, connection rate, site conditions, size of network, and other factors. Range will vary with site conditions." If "site conditions" are limiting the range of the 5Ghz band, why aren't those same site conditions limiting the 2.4Ghz band as well. While I don't realistically expect a full doubling of range between the 2 bands, couldn't I expect SOME? Otherwise the marketing claims are meaningless.
Can the disparity be explained by Tesserax' observation above, "we know the stricter the wireless security employed, the more overhead is "eating away" the overall bandwidth so we would expect poorer performance when using WPA2 vs. WEP." Now the TC only has WPA2 security available. Are we to assume that Apple's range claims do not apply to the TC then? If I switch my older ABS Extreme (UFO) from WEP to WPA2 will the result match Apple's marketing claims? I'd rather not chop off my good right leg just so it will match my missing left leg. Perhaps my expectations for 802.11n technology were a little too high. Don't get me wrong. I'm very happy with the results. And I am thankful for Tesserax advise. I also appreciate the fact that I am not (yet) experiencing the difficulties that others here are having with the Time Capsule.
Ultimately, I assume that picking up an Airport Express "n" will extend the 5Ghz network into the office. Is this correct? If anyone has observations on this or my thoughts above, feel free to share them with the rest of us.

  • AirPort Extreme Network Setup Help

Currently I am using my AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network for two houses. The problem I have is the devices in the other house have problems with the base station being in 802.11N so I had to force it into 802.11G only. What I would love to do is setup a device at the other house that connects to my AirPort Extreme using the N standard and then connect all of those devices over there with ethernet cables so I can use N at my house. Are there any devices that I could do this with?

I was kinda hoping there maybe another solution besides spending another $180+

  • Express to extend network - setup help please

I would really appreciate some help ensuring i have the correct set up for my express (x2)
I have a mac, macbook, sky broadband modem and a basestation
I connect to the internet using the modem and network "sky 13222".
The basestation has a network id as well "af506f", but i dont use this to connect to the network.
The idea for the 2 expresses was to expand my range into a weak reception of the house for one; and to connect my new pannny bluray player with the other.
I have plugged the first one in and it has showed up on the airport utility f9567b, but when i go to configure it suggests switching networks, which i am unsure about the next steps...the guide doesn't help really..
Anyone with a recommended setup for this?
I am not sure the setup was right before the expresses but i could connect wirelessly to the macbook and my wii ok...
    many thanks in advance

Hi, to set up the airport the computer has to connect to it hence "switching networks"
Once you added your new Airport to the your existing network then you should be able to switch back and it may all work!

  • Remote network setup help

I have an iMac at home and I want to access the files on my iMac in the office. I also want others who have PC's to get to the files at the office. I have a Airport base station at my office. All computers have access to broadband. Do I have to setup a vpn? How do you do that? I also want to let others outside my office get to a filemaker database I shared out via the web in my office. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!!
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

have an iMac at home and I want to access the files on my iMac in the office.
This is very straightforward. Setup your airport base station if it is acting as your router to port forward tcp port 22 to the ip address of your mac.
Then turn on remote login in the sharing preferences.
Then use a SFTP client such as transmit to login to your mac using its WAN IP address.
I also want others who have PC's to get to the files at the office. I have a Airport base station at my office.
This changes things a bit as you what do you do if you now want a secure connection such as SFTP to all the computers on the network.
Well now you should consider getting a VPN server. You could invest in some server software such as OSX server. Then you could setup a central file server in the office. This could run your filemaker database. It could also be the central fileserver all your pc and mac users store their files on.
Then the office staff could login using VPN clients on their mac's or pc's at home. Once logged in they could access the main server or their own desktop pc's using windows file sharing.
The other option would be to use a hardware VPN router using security such as IPsec. You would then need to get a static ip from your ISP. You would need to consider how sophisticated router you get. i.e how many simultaneous connections would you need.
If this all seems to much trouble for you learn about then I would advice you get a pro mac network guy in to set this up for you.

  • Advanced? Network Setup Help

    Hi All,
I revisited my network problems (posted earlier) and everything is now working peachy.
    My current setup:
cable modem -> airport extreme -> wireless computers
    (wan) | ---> linksys router ---> VOIP
    |--> Buffalo Linkstation
    |--> wired computer
Ok. If I plugin to the linksys router I can see the Buffalo Linkstation (which is a shared NAS drive).
I can't however see the Buffalo via wireless. I am positive this is due to my configuration of the network - I DHCP (10.1.X.X) w/ the Airport Extreme and DHCP (192.168.X.X) with the Linksys. While technical, I don't mess with network configuration very often.
My question - what can I do to set it up so that the wireless computers can see computers / NAS drives on a plugged in router? The configuration is changeable btw (ie cable modem -> linksys -> airport extreme) if necessary.
Thanks for the help in advance!
    David

gnash, Welcome to the discussion area!
Your problem is caused because you have 2 routers in your network. Therefore the wired computers are on a different subnet than the wireless computers.
One solution is to replace the Linksys router with a simple Ethernet switch or hub.
Another solutions is to reconfigure the AEBS so that it does not distribute IP addresses and then connect your network like this:
    modem->Linksys->[LAN] AEBS
In this configuration, the Linksys will provide IP addresses to both the wired and wireless clients.

  • Network setup, help needed..

Since i am getting a new internet connection (100mbit glass-fibre) i want to make a perfect setup network. Since im not entirely sure how to set it up i ask for some help.
First off, what i have on the network (or want to have):
    -Several Macs (100/1000 base)
    -Several Windows machines (100/1000 base)
-FTP server (maybe more than just FTP)
    -Wireless connectivity
    -Printers
    Network stuff i already have:
    -router (10/100m)
-8 port 1000 base ethernet switch
    -Airport express
-I am getting another ethernet switch since i am losing 4 ports that are on the old modem.
I am guessing that if i just hook the router up to the switch, and then the AE to the switch i wont have any trouble.
But now sometimes have trouble in my current setup, that is modem/router/hub (in one device) and then plugged into this an AE and switch. But but some PC's cant see each other, is that caused by the modem device (the hub inside it)? And so will i have that problem with the new setup i described?
If u think i need other devices please say so, i just want everything to work at the highest speed possible.
    Thanks in advance.

A long time ago, I worked on a print spooler and was lent a JetDirect
box from HP to test with. A JetDirect card is in your LaserJet, I believe.
(One of the protocols it supported was localtalk, BTW). I think the
d-link isn't forwarding your localtalk packets. Anyway, one of the
things I remember is that the JetDirect spoke PCL, so that's another
consideration a driver has to deal with. The garbage you're seeing
is raw postscript. It needs to be rasterized and translated to PCL.
Please bear with me, my experience is very old, and there are gaps
in my knowledge. But I think this is do-able. I think the first step is
to add the printer directly by clicking here,
The location of the printer should be the address of the print server
(or canonical name if you're ever going to change addresses). The
device should be appsocket/jetdirect. The device uri should be
socket://nameoripaddressofdevice. The make should be HP and
the model/driver should be one of the Laserjet series, gimp-print.
I don't know which one, my experience ended around Laserjet 5, and
so do the drivers! But fundamentally they have to do the same thing.
They use the gimp-print package to rasterize the postscript and
encapsulate it into PCL. So I would bet the LaserJet 6 driver will work.
I'm sure everything posted here is correct, and that my experience
is too old and I don't know enough to know why this won't work,
but it's not a lot of effort, and if I were you I'd give it a try.

  • Airport Express Setup Help!

I just bought an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express. I was on a Linksys wireless network nooked up to a desktop PC. I started with the Express and got a green light after fiddling around with Airport Admin Utility.
Then I started playing with the Airport Extreme as a base station. I took off the Linksys and substituted the Airport Extreme. I configured the security setup to WEP since I still have some old PC laptop. I hooked up my cable modem to the Extreme with an ethernet cable.
I got everything working and now to try the Airport Express. I have not been able to get the Express to go on a green light anymore. I have reset a zillion times. Both reset while plugged in and reset while plugging in.
The airport extreme disk wiped out my Express software. After I reinstalled the express software I can use admin utility to play around with the setting on the Express. I have tried using the utility wireless via my MacBook and via an ethernet cable.
Setup assistant is no help at this point. I kept on getting an error message about no being able to communicate with the Express base station. I can see the Express base station on my menu bar.
Basically I cannot get on the internet when I use the Airport Express base station because some how it is NOT talking to the Airport Extreme base station.
I thought it was suppose to be an easy setup if I use both the Extreme and Express together.
Thanks for any help you may provide.

Is your desired network configuration to use the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to extend the wireless network created by the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) as the Remote base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)?
If so, and I am assuming that you have the older 802.11g (dome-shaped) AEBS, then try the following setup for WDS...
Set up a Wireless Distribution System (WDS)
(Note: To facilitate setting up the base stations, place them in near proximity of each other during the set up phase.)
Set up the as the WDS Main Base Station, by connecting directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then use the AirPort Admin Utility, located in /Applications/Utilities, to make the following settings.
    WDS Tab
    - Enable this base station as a WDS: main base station (checked)
    - Enable wireless clients on this base station (optional)
    - Click "+" to add the AX as the Remote Base Station.
-- Select the AX that you want to be the WDS Remote.
-- AirPort ID: <verify that this is the correct wireless MAC address for the AX you are adding as a Remote.
-- Auto configure as a WDS remote base station (checked)
    -- Click "OK."
    - Verify that the AX has been added to the list.
    - Click "Update," and then verify the settings for the AX.
-- Allow wireless clients on this base station (checked)
-- New network name: <verify that this is the same as the network name for the AEBS>
    -- TCP/IP: Configure using DHCP
-- Base Station Password: <the AX base station password>
    -- Confirm: <same as previous step>
    -- Click "OK."

  • Conflict with my network setup--Help!

    Hi Helpers,
I have a Windows unit, an iMac G5 and a MBP on my home Airport Extreme network.
    1) When the MBP is connected to the net, the Windows unit won't work, but the iMac does.
    2) Windows unit Works fine when MBP airport is turned off.
    3) I can run the iMac and the MBP together.
    4) When iMac airport is on, I can run Windows unit.
Any suggestions how I can get internet access with all 3 units? I'm thinking it is a problem with the MBP connection, but I don't have a clue what it could be.

  • Best network setup help

    Good day everyone!
I read some posts here on some concerns with DSL modem/router w/ Airport extreme and would like to ask for the best setup.
    Here's the setup.
    ISP provided:
    1. DSL modem- DHCP is set to OFF
    2. DSL modem is currently using 192.168.1.1 for web configuration/administration
    3. DSL speed is close to 2MB
    4. Static IP address is 124.107.19.7
    5. DSL connects using PPPoe
    Internal network:[airport extreme Gigabit, base]
    1. Airport base is set for DHCP
    2. Dlink gigabit switch connected to airport's Gigabit ethernet
    3. 3 Macpros connected to Dlink
    4. 2 maclaptops connected to airport base using airport
just last night, I connected my DSL to the WAN port of airport extreme and took a while before all computers can connect.
the speed is not that stable..
I was thinking of assigning a static IP to the clients[macpros, laptops]
Would it be better to connect DSL modem to Airport's giga ethernet port instead of WAN port?
Would it be better if DSL modem assigns IP to Airport extreme? and to clients?
Here's what I want to do.
    1. Connect DSL modem to WAN port
    2. Airport extreme assigns IPs[DHCP]
    3. Assign a static IP to all clients except the laptop[laptop will receive an IP from Airport's IP range]
    4. Assign my router to the same network as Airport[10.0.1.XX][is this possible?]
Please let me know your thoughts and recommendations.
I want to make full use of the 2MB DSL speed.
Lastly,, is it possible to usb hub for connecting more than 1 printer?
    Thanks guys!!

My current setup seems ok. Thanks anyways!

  • Home network setup HELP

    Hi
Firstly I cannot get my Linksys RE1000 to work with my network having tried the set up CD on 2 computers (mac and windows)
The main router is a BT Home Hub 2.0
    any suggestions
Secondly this is what I am trying to achieve so help to do that would be great.....
The main router is in the basement where out internet connection enters the house, also in the basement is our LAN board where we have ethernet cables extending to parts of the house. There is weak wireless signal from groundfloor up to the top floor so wanted to find something where I could plug into the ethernet port and it would broadcast an wireless network to the upper floors/areas with a weaker signal. Thought the RE1000 would do this job but i can't get it to do it wirelessly let alone connect it to the main router using a ethernet cable
    HELP Please.

If you already have ethernet cable running throughout your house, then a wireless access point is probably your best solution........not the RE1000.
It took me a couple tries to get a RE1000 up and running.  I'm pretty sure I didn't read or follow the directions.  I remember having to reset it a couple times using the reset button on the back of the RE1000.
You'll need to have the RE1000 close to your main wireless router when you are setting it up.
But again, if you already have ethernet cable running to parts of your house, the RE1000 is not your best solution.

  • 55UL605U Network setup help please

Ok so we've had this tv for weeks now and no matter what I try, I cannot get it to connect to my home network.  Could someone please help a newbie to get this connected?  PLEASE

    Hello,
01: If Macs, this may be important...
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
    10.4 instructions...
Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.
02: The beauty of the guest network - and the whole point of it - is that you get two separate wireless networks for the price of one AirPort base station. The traffic is segmented and isolated, so users connected to the guest network can't see or detect the traffic on the primary network, and vice versa.

  • AE Network setup help!

I have created a wireless network using my AirPort Express (802.11n). Comcast Ethernet is connected directly to my AE. I setup this network using the AE utility.
I have connected my imac, macbook, iphone, and ps3 to the network (verified in the Wireless Clients screen of the AE utility, 4 clients).
That being said, only one of the clients is able to access the internet at a time.
What am I missing? I want to be able to browse the internet on my imac, while gaming online, and someone else is using my macbook.

Hello VVhiskey. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your network components when adding/changing your network configuration.
Please try the following to see if this resolves the problem:
o Power-down the modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX), and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the AX; wait at least 5-10 minutes or until the AX's status light is solid green.
    o Power-up the computer(s).
Each network device should now be able to access the Internet simultaneously through the AX.

  • Home Network Setup Help ( Motorola & Linksys)

    Hi,
I need help configuring my home network, I have created a diagram using gliffy.com to help view my current setup.
Currently all wired and wireless computers connect to the internet successfully, that's with default settings. The only thing I have changed is the SSID and Wireless password.
I need help figuring out the settings I need to input for the Motorola and the Linksys Routers so all computers can find each other in the network.
I really don't know what the exact technical terms might be, but if you need more information I can gather it. Thank you!
