Airport networking and KVM switchs...what to do?

I am in the process of setting up my G5 Quad as my main video and graphics machine. I also have a G4(Quicksilver) that I will use for basic stuff. They are both Airport equipped and I currently have an Airport Extreme Base Station (not set up yet) and an Airport Express that I use to connect to the Internet.
Due to limited space and an ever-shrinking wallet, I would like to continue using my 22in Cinema display, wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse, as well as audio and printer for both machines.
I’m wondering what the most efficient way would be to set this up? Is it with a KVM switch, or with the Airport Extreme/Express or a combination of both?
Thank you,
Cristy

Frank means VNC.
You can install a VNC server on the Mac, however the Apple Remote Desktop Client that comes withy OX 10.4 allows that to be used with a VNC client on another Mac.
System Preferences > Sharing > check Apple Remote Desktop
Check VNC viewers may control screen with password
On the client Mac, install something like Chicken of the VNC
http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
Start Chicken, enter the IP address of the server Mac and the password and that's it.

  • Kernel Panics (AFPFS) when using airport discs AND user switching!

    Ok,
    I would love to see if anyone else has had this happen;
I can replicate this on 2 Mac Pro's we use:
We have airports discs (in accounts mode) connected, all works fine. However, IF one user does not log out, and another logs on (user switching) we will invariably get a Kernel Panic after some time (sometimes when putting to sleep or logging on, sometimes 'just'. This has not happened when airport discs are NOT MOUNTED, or befure using them (we are using the latest, just-updated software patch). Any suggestions?
The Panic log (with the memory dump removed) is below:

I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
    com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
    com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
    com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
    com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

  • Setup and connections for 3 airport extremes and 2 switches?

I'm finally getting ethernet wiring in my house rather having to rely on just wireless, but due to the lath and plaster walls I'll still end up having a separate Airport Extreme 802.11ac unit on each floor, otherwise the signal drops off dramatically with dead spots. I'm assuming that I should no longer do an extended network between the airport extremes, but I'm not sure of the proper wiring between the ethernet switches I'll have, the airport extremes, etc. either. Here's the gear...
    2nd floor
    cable modem
    8 port ethernet switch
main airport extreme, should provide DHCP and NAT
cable modem plugs into the main switch
airport extreme plugs into the main switch
    1st floor
    airport extreme
there will be an ethernet cable from the basement ethernet switch to the 1st floor unit, which is the only feasible hardwire connection that I can make unless I pull a second long run of ethernet from the second floor, go to the basement and then back over to the first floor connection spot.
    Basement
    airport extreme
    second 8 port ethernet switch
there will be an ethernet cable running from the 2nd floor ethernet switch to the basement switch
There are also additional airport express boxes attached to audio equipment and an AppleTV attached to an AV receiver for TV. Various printers, game consoles, etc. will plug into the ethernet switches.
As described above, all connections are going to the switches, not coming out of the main airport extreme and going to another airport extreme.
First of all, is the wiring described make sense or should it be handled differently?
Secondly, rather than an extended network, since I'll have hardwire ethernet connections between switches to all of the airports, what is the proper network topology to use in the airport utility? Does each of the three airports end up being their own wireless network, but just sharing the same name for 802.11 b/g, n, and ac? Any links to help me figure this out or do I need to make an Apple genius appointment?

    2nd floor
    cable modem
    8 port ethernet switch
main airport extreme, should provide DHCP and NAT
cable modem plugs into the main switch
airport extreme plugs into the main switch
What is the make and model number of the modem?
If it is a simple modem....(not a modem/router or gateway device)....you cannot have an Ethernet switch between the simple modem and the AirPort Extreme.
Instead, the modem must connect to the AirPort Extreme, and the Ethernet switch then connects to the AirPort Extreme.
However, if your "modem" is a modem/router or gateway device.....you could connect the Ethernet switch to the modem/router......but you would not configure the AirPort Extreme to provide DHCP and NAT.....since the modem/router or gateway would already be providing those services.
Let's get this clarified before we go any further, since the entire network will depend on this.

  • My phone is not switching from 4G over to WiFi. The phone has the network memorized its just not check marking the network and to switch over to WiFi. How can I fix this?

I have the iPhone 4S and the wifi was working on it earlier yesterday. I noticed that the wifi didn't kick on last night. It has the network memorized so it could connect automatically. The network name pops up and there's a signal but the spinning circle thing is there and it won't put a check mark by the network name. The wifi will pop up every now and then but only stay for a minute or less. Everyone else's phone and computer is connecting just fine but mine isn't. It won't switch over to WiFi from 4G. I've tried turning off the wifi on my phone. I've tried to forget the network and put in the password numerous of times and I tried to fix it by turning my phone on and off and that still didn't work. I'm hoping that this is a temporary thing but I don't know. What's a good way to fix this because seriously I would like to not use up all of my data for this kind of bull crap. So what's a good way to fix this?

I got the ATV hooked up to the WiFi after manually inputting the DHCP settings.
The ATV will not see iTunes from a PC on the same iTune network.  I guess you need an Apple computer for iTunes to connect to the ATV.
The biggest problem is that the iTunes store on the ATV is nonexistent I imagine because of competition/ monopolies in the UAE.  If I was in Lao, Burma, Thailand, Mozambique no problem.  40 Countries are listed and non of them are from the Middle East.  When I logon to the iTunes store on my PC it too does not allow for me to buy any movies or TV shows.  I am not sure why.
As for the iPad OS6, iTunes has an icon and when you click it you get iTune U or Podcast, no video content.  The App store works fine and they are always happy to take your money but no video content.
To top it all off YouTube is no longer licensed under OS6.0 and although I can get it on Google Chrome it is by no means as quick (for reasons unknown).
As I said before if I choose United States as my country the ATV hooks up and lets me browse TV and movies and watch trailers but not able to purchase (obviously).
So my conclusion is that ATV will not hook up to the iTune store in the UAE?  If this is incorrect please clue me in.

  • Airport network and sharing Internet connection

    Hello all,
I have hit this problem with sharing an internet connection on an airport network. Maybe its a simple fix, maybe it a "can not be done", answer.
My set up may be a little hard to describe. To explain, completely wireless set up in my network, 1 x imac and 1 x powerbook, all on airport and using an airport express. This includes my new printer. All connected through airport express network, call it network A.
Up till now i had a modem with an ether net cable plugged into the airport express. All was fine.
I am in jakarta, the cable internet providers here are hopeless, slow connection speed.
Last month a new wireless internet service was released. Called 3.5 G. Its lightning fast and reliable. Basically you get a wireless USB modem attach it to your computer and you are always connected to the internet wirelessly. You can travel anywhere with it. The 3.5G is primarily for mobile phones but i use it just for internet. This modem is connected to my powerbook and works great.
Now, the useless cable internet connected to my airport express is still connected for my Imac to use.
My problem is that i would like to share my high speed internet connection from my laptop to my imac. Problem is that when i allow sharing from my laptop, the intenet works fine on both machines but on the powerbook, which is doing the sharing you get an arrow symbol through the airport icon at the top.
The laptop can NOT access the local airport express network A. Hence i cannot use the printer or see the imac. That is my problem, i cannot print from the powerbook unless i stop sharing. When you share an internet connection the sharing computer seems to create another computer to computer network and does not join the existing arirport network.
This is probably a little confusing. Hopefully, someone may have some ideas. My alternative is to buy a new fixed position modem/router for the 3.5G system. Its about $600. Ouch.
    Any ideas
    thanks for the interest.
    joe

    Selamat Phil Smith,
Actually do we know each other, cause i know a phil smith.
Actually an ether net cable is OK for the short term. But if i get another computer it may get complex. Spent a lot removing cables too.... Looks like i will have to buy the special modem router... Painful $600.
This share internet thing over airport looks like a great idea till you realise it disables access to the ariport network for the computer doing the sharing.
Cheers and thanks for the idea

  • Weird Behavior on my Airport Network and iTunes

This will be a bit long. Set up a wifi network with a AP Extreme downstairs wired to my desktop, and an Express upstairs for my laptop and Airtunes. Worked great for awhilw but then kept getting kicked off. After searching the forum I tried to disable my firewall and everything was great- for awhile. Then I could not connect and needed to hard reset it all. Worked well again. Now a new problem.
With the AP Extreme and the desktop downstairs I get great internet access but iTunes does not show the speakers connected to the Express.
At the same time, Upstairs with the Express (solid green light) and the laptop I get great internet access and this iTunes sees the speakers connected to Express Airtunes. But it does not see the iTunes (and music)from the desktop PC. My wireless says I have an excellent signal to my network.
So: The computer with all the music does not see Airtunes. The computer with no music sees Airtunes but not the other computer with the music.
I checked and both are configured to see and display shared music.
I am sure that if I reboot it all it will work. But this constant rebooting is becoming a pain. Anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance.
      Windows XP

Next time you want to change the network password.......change it on the Express first....and then on your main router. Then, as soon as you restart the main router, the Express already has the settings that it needs to join the network and it will join with no problems.
Now, you must reset the Express back to factory default settings and then set it up again. To do that......
Power off the Express for a minute
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the 10 second hold, and allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
The Express has now been reset and you can reconfigure it to join your "new" network now.

  • Home Network and Multiple Switches

Hi, I am upgrading my small office network as I have run out of ports on my Cisco SG100-24 unmanaged switch. I have purchased another SG100-24 which will give me the ports required. My question is how best to connect them.
I am currently using my ISP`s modem to a Cisco RV320 router to the first SG100-24. I see two obvious options here one being just daisy chain them or just connect them each to the router as more of a tree approach. I also have a 8 port switch (SG200-08) but not sure I need it any longer with the new 24 port switch though it is a "Smart-Switch".  I guess I am curious if there is any benefit of using the mini-GBIC combo ports (with or without buying the modules) or just to run both switches through the RV320.  I also use a 4410 WAP so my current pan is as follows:
    Port 1 of RV320 -> SG100-24#1
    Port 2 of RV320 -> SG100-24#2
    Port 3 of RV320 -> WAP4410N
    Port 4 of RV320 -> Server
I would appreciate thoughts and suggestions especially as it pertains to the Mini GBIC combo ports.

    Jason,
The only advantage you would get from using SFPs (fiber tranceivers) in the GBIC slots would be if you needed to make a run of over 100m between the switches.  Unless you have a very large property with switches at either end you are just as well to use the copper ports in the setup you described.  There is also nothing wrong with chaining the SG100s together if necessary to free up a port on the RV320.  The only other thing to consider is if you are using VLANs.  Each unmanaged SG100 will only pass a single VLAN so if you need segregated distribution coming from the RV320 you would need to put each SG100 on its own port.  Or, you could run a trunk from a port on the RV320 to your SG200 and then split off your untagged VLANs from there.  Hope this answers your question and have a nice day.
    Regards,
    Mike.V

  • How to connect a EE 4G HUAWEI E5776 to Airport network and share connection

    Help Please!
We live in a rural area with poor <6MBS down <1MBS Up Broadband. I have purchased a Huawei E5776 on EE in the UK and can get 16MBS down and about 14mps up.
Now my problem, large house with 1 Aiport Base Station and 3 Express repeaters share the network around the house. Does anybody know how I can get the Huawei on the wireless network so it can be repeated and used throughout the house? PS I also use 3 Apple TV V2 and various other internet devices.
Many thanks for any help I have tried all I know and guess it might be down to correct use of IP address and router address but as of now Im stuck. Please keep it to the level of advanced amater not IP professional!
    J

You would need to connect the wireless modem to a Mac equipped with Ethernet and share the WWAN connection over Ethernet.
OS X Mavericks: Share your Internet connection
Connect the Ethernet port to the WAN port on the base station. Configure the base station in bridge mode.
AirPort Utility 6.x: Set up a base station or AirPort Time Capsule as a bridge

  • Problem using external screen and KVM switch since OSX 10.6.4 update

I've just returned from a trip during which I installed the OSX SL 10.6.4 update on my 13" MacBook Unibody Aluminium (late 2008).
It's been working fine but when I came home and plugged it into my KVM setup my mac could not find the external display. I tried rebooting and reconnecting without any success. The KVM is a Aten CS62DU USB and DVI model. It works great for my PC which is connected to the second input.
Furthermore I've connected the display using only the minidisplay->DVI adapter and a standard DVI cable. This works but not as rigid as it used to. It takes a few connects and disconnects before OSX is able to find the external screen. It seems that the timelimit for handshaking with extrenal screens have been decreased with the 10.6.4 display driver update. Perhaps this is the cause of my problem.
Have anyone experienced something simular since the 10.6.4 update? I really need to get my mac working with my KVM again.

I haven't experienced this specific problem with this specific hardware, but I have updated systems and had to replace KVMs on lower releases of OSX because they simply refused to work.
Any chance a firmware update is available from the manufacturer of the switch?

  • Airport Network and Security

I am using Airport to hook up my iMac G5 to the Internet. Should I create a password for my use only? I'm a little confused as to how to do it.

Run the Airport Admin Utility, select your Airport Express, click to configure, click on the Airport tab, click on the wireless security button. Select "WPA Personal" and enter an alphanumeric password of at least eight characters not found in any dictionary. Update settings to the Airport Express.
Back to your Mac... reconnect to your Airport Express's wireless network by clicking on its name in the Airport menu of the MacOS (near right side of the MacOS menu bar). When prompted, type in the same password.
    That's it!

  • Adding Thinkpad to Airport Network: Need hardware and software config

I have an IBM Thinkpad T30 Laptop.
I want to add it to an existing Airport network.
    1. What is the required hardware to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
    2. What is the required software to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
    thank you.
IBM Thinkpad T30   Windows XP Pro   WIndows XP Pro SP2

    1. What is the required hardware to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
Depending on the exact model of the Thinkpad T30, a variety of 802.11b wireless Mini PCI Adapters were pre-installed. In addition, all T30 models support Type III or Type II PC Cards. (ref: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid= MIGR-42308)
If your T30 did not come with an internal Mini PCI adapter, most wireless PC cards, that support 802.11b/g, should work with the AirPort base stations.
    2. What is the required software to be installed and configured on the Thinkpad.
Being that this is a Apple User-to-User support forum, you might find better luck getting specific answers to IBM/Lenovo laptops on those vendors support forums, but I would think as a minimum, you would need the device drivers installed that came with the wireless PC card and it would be a good idea to install the AirPort 4.2 for Windows software to administer the AirPort from your PC.

  • Weird semi-loss of AirPort Express and Extreme

I have an odd symptom where, when I launch iTunes, my AirPort Express is sometimes listed is not available from my Power Mac G% (running 10.4.8).
When I launch AirPort Admin Utility, NONE OF MY AIRPORTS (either Extreme or Express) are listed. Rescanning or selecting Other does not solve this.
What is odd is (1) The AirPort menu still shows me connected to my AirPort network and indeed I still have Web access etc. and (2) If I launch AirPort Admin Utility from my MacBook Pro, it shows all the AirPorts correctly (so the problem seems limited to my G5 rather than the AirPort devices).
If I restart my Power Mac G5, the problem goes away and all works well again- for a day or so - and then it returns.
What can I do to permanently eliminate this annoying symptom?

1.) Since the Airport Express is extending the Extreme Network, will my whole network now be single radio only network, since the Express only has one radio?
Although, your AirPort Express is 802.11n, it is not simultaneous dual-band. That means it can either extend the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz radio but not both at the same time. So the AEBSn will still be broadcasting on both the 5 GHz (for 802.11a/n) and on 2.4 GHz (for 802.11b/g/n).
2.) What if both an 802.11g and 802.11n device connect to the Express' radio instead of the Extreme's for some reason, will this make both devices operate at 2.4GHz?
    Yes.
3.) What if an 802.11g device connects to the Airport Express' radio. Since this is now 2.4GHz, will it only now communicate with the Airport Extreme at 2.4GHz?
Assuming that you configured the AXn to extend the AEBSn's 2.4 GHz radio, it will only be able to communicate back to the AEBSn on its 2.4 GHz radio.

  • Best way to set up homesharing via airport express and NAS

    Hi,
I've just bought an Airport express and was wondering what the best way to set it up would be so that I can play music stored on my NAS, controlled by my iphone / ipad.  I have itunes match as well, and don't want my phone to be streaming the music from wherever.  The airport express will be wired via ethernet to the same router as the NAS on which everything is stored.  I don't want the problem with network dropouts and hammering the bandwidth and battery on my iphone to deal with.
How can I set it up to be taking the music straight from the NAS rather than streaming it.  I'd also rather not have to turn off itunes match everytime, because it takes an age to repopulate the library when I turn it back on.
    Thanks,
    Dom

You cannot use homesharing to play content from anywhere but iTunes on a computer. The content doesn't have to be on that computer but it has to be part of the iTunes library on your computer. In addition the computer has to be on with iTunes running.
It doesn't matter what sonos can do, sonos is a lame duck in comparison to iTunes because iTunes gives you many features sonos can't, all because it doesn't use iTunes and homesharing.

  • Unknown system keychain for airport network

Hi, i wonder if anyone can explain me this:
I have found in my keychain access a totally unknown "system keychain", under somebody's name.
the Kind says "Airport Network Password", the Account says "Person Name " , Where is in "Airport Network" and it has the icon of an application.
i dont have such account in my computer, and never set anything under this name, and when i try to retrieve this password with my administrator login keychain, it doesn't let me access it.
but i can see that it always allow access by these applications:
    configd /usr/sbin
    airport /system/library/privateframeworks/
    airportcfgtool /system/library/privateframeworks/
    system preferences /applications
    what is exactly going on?
    thank you for your help

yes i do have a wireless internet connection and it is insecure, i got a second hand wi-fi router and couldn't figure out how to set a password. of course it isn't my wireless login account, it says "lisandro" and that's not my name...
besides, what happens now (unlike before) is that often while im on the internet, i get a lot of pop-up windows that tells me that safari cannot verify the identity of this or that website because the certificate of the website is invalid and there i have to click on "continue" or "cancel" to keep going.
for instance, it happened when i opened "discussions.apple.com", whose certificate was
a certain 'a248.e.akamai.net' from an organization named 'Akamai Technologies, Inc' ....?
also, when i open safari, now the keychain asks me to input my login password, whereas this never happened before...
how can get rid of these anomalies?
    thanks for your help
