Airport no longer connects to OPEN wireless networks

Lots of people seem to think that their airport keeps dropping the connection to OPEN wireless networks because of the 2008-001 airport update. That is probably only true for a Macbook 2,1 (aka Macbook Core 2 Duo).
I had the issue on my Macbook 1,1 (aka Macbook Core Duo). I wiped the system clean. Re-installed OS-X. Applied all updates BUT:
1. Airport 2008-001
2. Security update 2008-002
I also downgraded the Airport firmware to 2007-004 (aka version 1.1.9.3).
Technically speaking this should have resolved the issue but it didn't.
Why do I believe it should have resolved the issue? Because the same approach worked on the Macbook 2,1 and they both have the exact same Airport card.
Now I have no idea how to get it fixed - I think I have tried every possible way. There doesn't seem to be any way to contact Apple coz I don't have a support contract.
But hey, do I need a contract? Apple broke this for me ... they should fix this. I am about to post this as a tech article on engadget and other places because there are SO many people suffering from poor testing on Apple's behalf.
Apple, please respond.
Thanks.

Visited the "genius" bar this afternoon - what a trip!! The guy said this is a Verizon issue, period. I was like you must be kidding, there are SO many people out there who got affected and not everyone uses verizon ... he actually got pretty mad and said you should be using mac hardware (router) and secure network. I even told him my second Macbook is working fine on the same Verizon network. This is their new location in the Northern VA area at Fair Oaks Mall.
I would call that guy anything but a genius, what a waste of time. This was my first and last trip to a "genius" bar.
If anyone comes across any new ideas, please share.
Thanks.

  • My MacBook pro will no longer connect to a wireless network that I've been connecting to automatically for months and I'm not given the opportunity to re-enter the password.

I am trying to connect to a wireless network that I have connect to automatically for over a year. When I try to connect I simply get the following message: "the wifi network xxxx could not be joined". I have moved closer to the router as suggested and I have attempted to run diagnostics without luck, I have rebooted, I have toggled the wifi on and off. I'm at a loss now...

  • Apple TV(3) No longer connecting/locating ANY wireless networks

    Hi all,
I recently purchased a Motorola modem and replaced it with a rented one form comcast, and for some reason my Apple TV is no longer able to connect to either my network (via an airport express and Comcast connection) or locate any other wireless networks in our area. I live in an apartment complex, so it should be able to see quite a few.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    1. Restart Apple TV
    2. Reset (not restore) Apple TV
    3. Reset airport router
    4. Reset modem
    5. Un-plug/re-plug coax (internet) cable from the wall
    6. Relocate the Apple TV within my electronics set-up
I don't have an extra Ethernet port on my modem, so I have yet to try hard wiring the Apple TV as it would require disconnecting the Internet.
    Any ideas???

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
There has been a recall of a small number of Apple TV 3 units that are unable to detect wifi. Please provide the 3rd and 4th characters of your serial number, as well as the last 4 characters, I’ll check if it is on the recall list for you.
Your serial number can be found at settings > general > about, if you can access it, or on the box or the device itself (quite small).
Alternatively you can contact an authorised reseller or you can also contact your nearest official retail store to check for qualifying models. You should note that all Apple TV models are not eligible for the replacement.

  • Can no longer connect to my wireless network started today

every time i try to connect to my network it says connection timed out. i can connect using cable... and my windows laptop is connecting to the network wirelessly. Any sugestions

    Be careful…
There are two pieces to connecting to a wireless router, getting connected to the network itself and getting an IP address.
If the AirPort icon shows you as connected that means you are connected to the network (and any passwords required have been accepted); the self-assigned address means you haven't been able to get an IP address from the DHCP server on your network.
If that's the case, the next question is why, and to figure that out you need to know who normally assigns IP addresses on your network - a cable or DSL modem, some other machine, a wired router or your wireless router - and try and debug things from that end.
I've mentioned before cable modems as an example; they typically only assign one to three IP addresses and often need to be power cycled before they will assign any more. This is cable companies' way of having multiple hosts slam the modem with data; if you have to have another router in the path the router to modem link becomes the bottleneck, not the modem itself.
So the next question is who is responsible for assigning IP addresses (via DHCP) on your network?

  • Connected to "open wireless network" but can't open web pages

Anyone ever to joined a "public" open network but failed to open web pages?
Twice I have entered a hotspot (Texas Highway Dept. Rest Area & an Air Force base recreation hall) and received the "Do you want to join the open network ...." prompt but once joined with full signal strength, I can't open any web pages.
Tried several variations of "Automatic" in Network prefs. I could join the network no problem and always got the green "connected to the internet via Airport" indicator. Same connection setup joins typical hotel and other hotspots no sweat.

    Hi Tim-
If your Mac has been sleeping when you pull into the Texas Rest Area, and you hit the 'connect to open network'...
You might want to try a full restart of the mac, and try again.
If this has only happened twice to you (out of how many open networks that have been successful?)...then that's not a bad track record.
DNS is likely the issue, as mentioned here. A cure-all can often be a 'restart the mac', which might make some mac users gasp...gives you a chance to pretend you're a PC

  • My Powerbook no longer connects to my wireless network

    Hi.
Recently bought a new iMac 2.4GHz and reconfigured my Airport Express. Network works fine (set as B/G compatible) with the iMac (N extreme), but my old Powerbook G4 667MHz running 10.4.11 has stopped working (old B Airport card). Tried all sorts of changes including different types of password encryption, resetting the network and updating the software - all without joy. On startup, the Powerbook recognizes the network I have established, and asks for WEP password. It then refuses to join the network giving a standard error message recommending out of range, wrong password, etc. All obvious settings are correct as I have tried them about 20+ times now with no joy.
Tried another wireless network away from home, and get the same result so suspect a fault with the AIrport card in the Powerbook.
Tried running the Hardware test disc on startup with the Powerbook, but it will not run (ejects CD).
Any other way of running a fault diagnosis on the network, Powerbook or Airport card?
    Regards
    D

    Hi Duane.
Thanks for the suggestion. Tried it, but no success.
Have now spent hours on this, but finally cracked it this morning. As Sherlock Holmes pointed out... when you have eliminated the impossible, all that remains - however improbable - is the truth.
The answer lies in the Keychain Access and the Location/Preferred Network configuration.
I reset the Airport Express base station and reconfigured it using a different network name. Went into Keychain Access on the Powerbook and deleted all the Keychains for the Airport. After this, the Powerbook thought it was joining a new setup and accepted the password first time. JOY!!! This is not the first time I've had problems with the Keychain - must be something to do with the hierarchy of the configuration protocols.

Perhaps this will work for you too.

  • HP C510A eStation Printer - Zeen: Not Connected - Can No Longer Connect To My Wireless Network

Up until a couple of weeks ago, my C510A was working well.  Every so often the wireless sync would fail and I would have to resync the Zeen tablet, or unplug/replug back in the printer to regain sync, but now...  Nothing!
    My Firmware is: ZEP1CN1130AR
    Printer IP: 192.168.1.74
    Zeen IP: Not Connected
    SSID: Visible
    Mac Filtering: None
    Security: WPA/WPA2 PSK
Signal Strength 3-4 Bars (I can move closer to the router and watch the bars increase, and move further away and see them decrease.  So the wireless radio is on and functioning within the Zeen!)
The Zeen cannot connect to my network and is never given an IP address, so I can't set the printer up with a static IP address.  It just keeps trying to sync with my network and failing.  Over, and over, and over, and over again...  I have reset the Zeen to factory using the Power On/Volume Up combo.  I have uninstalled my HP printing software suite, redownloaded the latest version of the entire suite from the HP Support site, and have installed the drivers/printer both wirelessly and via a USB connection.  I have powered down my wireless access point and powered it back up to see if that helps, but nothing does.
    uVerse Cisco 2Wire i3812V Gateway/Router
Netgear WNDR3700-V1 configured as a wireless access point (Thanks to the crappy 2Wire POS above.)
I have numerous laptops (Mac and Windows), a Mac Mini, 3 tablets (WebOS, IOS, and Android), IOS and Win8 mobile phones, a Roku 2 XS, various TV's and Blu-Ray players, a Wii, and this malfunctioning HP printer connected to my network via 802.11 DB wireless AND a wired gigabit network.  I run a Plex Media Server on the Mac Mini which is my HTPC for our home.  The printer was working fine in this setup until a couple of weeks ago.
From reading the many Zeen threads here, and on other forums, it's obvious that there is some sort of ongoing connectivity issue with the Zeen tablet on this printer.  HP has been conspicuously silent on the issue, and there is precious little to go on in the HP Knowledgebase, or in replies on this forum.  I've suffered through being hung up on, as well as trying to explain my problem to tech support reps who both do not speak English very well at all, and are unable to grasp concepts and analogies in English.
My frustration level is HIGH at this point.  My printer is out of warranty, and if there is a hardware issue with the printer then I fully expect to have to make the decision as to whether it's worth repairing or not, but I do FULLY expect to be able to talk to someone in technical support who speaks English about the issue and try to diagnose and fix the problem if it's just a software/networking/configuration issue at NO CHARGE, just like I do with every other product that I own!
So I'm coming here to try and find an answer to my problem before I reach the point, and it's very close right now, of totally severing ties with HP, Compaq, and all the rest of their subsidiaries both here at home, and at the company I manage (where I pretty much make all of the hardware decisions).  This just isn't the way to treat your customers.
Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
When Zeen's battery level goes below 5 %; it tends to Reset to Default where it looses all the connections and sync to the printer or router.
So its very important to make sure that Zeen's battery does not go to low. To avoid this I would suggest to charge Zeen regularly.
You may try the steps below as of now and check the results.
We need to Factory Reset the Zeen making sure it is connected (Docked) on the C510a printer.
Once it is docked try the steps below:-
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02844556&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_us...
Open the above link; and then perform the Factory Reset as shown in Solution Two.
Once completed try connecting to Wireless and check the results.
though I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

  • Time Capsule no longer connects to home wireless network.

Last night the Time Capsule we have been using for wireless internet and TM backup stopped connecting to internet.  It will still back up from this network. It is connected to a FIOS router.  The status light is off, which is supposed to mean it is unplugged.  It is plugged in and connected to the FIOS router, this light is green.
If we switch to using the FIOS router for internet access, we get internet access but no backups.  Our Canon printer used to work connected wirelessly, but now does not on either network.
    Shelly

Good news that the Time Capsule has not had a major power failure.
But, I'm not clear on whether the Time Capsule is working OK now on your network.....and the amber light is blinking......or......whether the Time Capsule is not working on your network and the amber light is blinking.
The genius should have told you that you can use AirPort Utility on your Mac and it will tell you "why" the amber light is blinking.
What operating system are you using on your Mac?  If you are not sure, click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen, then click on About This Mac. Post back with the OS X Version number that you see there.

  • How can I get airport to connect automatically to wireless network?

I temporarily switched from a DSL internet provider to a cable provider, and then back to my old DSL Internet provider. My g5 iMac computer connects to the network through a wireless Belkin router.
Since I switched Internet providers, every time I turn on my computer, it no longer automatically connects into the wireless network. Instead, to connect I now have to manually select the network.
I'd really appreciate tips on automating this step. My kids use this computer and due to parental restrictions, they do not have rights to connect to the network.

    Hi there,
Strictly speaking changing how the internet is coming into the wireless router should not affect the wireless and how machines connect to it, but however to get you out of a hole I would say create a new Location for your home and start again.
Basically,Disable your wireless first, then in your network settings there is a drop down box at the top of the panel where you can change and create new locations. Create a new one, then select it and click Apply. Now enable your airport and connect to the wireless, once that is done you should be good to go.
    Hope that helps,

  • Can I use airport express to create a local wireless network that my apple tv can connect to for AirPlay/mirroring in student halls/dorm without Internet connection

    Hi I was wondering :
Would I be able to make a local wireless network using airport express that my apple tv can connect to which in turn is connected to a projector with hdmi in so that I can mirror/AirPlay from iPhone pad and mac

will the Airport Express allow you to log onto a hotel wireless network, and broadcast a secure wireless network in your room for your wireless devices, like the Ipad, Iphone, etc.?
The bottom line with a single AirPort Express is no.
The AirPort Express can only "extend" a wireless network when the network is being provided by another Apple router.
As you might imagine, it is extremely unlikely that that the hotel network....which no doubt uses professional wireless access points provided by a manufacturer of commercial systems.....would be compatible with an AirPort Express.
In many years of travel domestically and internationally, I cannot recall a time when a single AirPort Express would "extend" the signal provided by a hotel's wireless network.
However, if you had two AirPort Express devices handy, you might be able to configure one to "join" the hotel network and provide an Ethernet signal to the second AirPort Express, which would be configured to "create" your own "private"  wireless network.

Is there a way to configure win 8 Laptop to airport express?  I can see the connection to the wireless network, but troubleshooter suggests there's there is no gateway and of course no internet. The connection
shows limited.  Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.  Further, should I simply buy another router for the windows machine?  If I did that, would it interfere with the airport?

The internal HDDs must be formatted in either EXT3 or EXT4 file system because NSS uses Linux OS.  This is mainly because the RAM designed to fit with the customized Linux OS's size.
You can connect to an external HDD via a  USB or eSATA port. The external HDD's file system can be NTFS, FAT32, AFT or EXT3/4 to be recognized for read/write. You can connect a 2TB USB/eSATA drive connec to the NSS via USB port to format your HDD for NTFS, AFT, FAT32, or EXT3/4 partition.
You can join the NSS to a Windows domainr so all domain users to access NSS. You cannot replace the NSS for the Windows 2003 SP2 server. They are two different products and do different jobs. Windows server is features sets server while the NSS is the files/data server.
    Hope that helps!!
