Airport no longer found in iTunes or Airport Utility but found on iDevices

A couple months ago, my two Airport Expresses and my Apple TV disappeared from iTunes AirPlay. When I ran the Airport Utility, the Airports and Apple TV could not be located.  Interestingly, the Airports displayed a green light and all iDevices (iPod Touches and iPads) could connect to the Airports via AirPlay. Like wise, Airport Utility on the iDevices located the Airports. So I connected an Airport to the router via a Ethernet cable.  Once connected via wire and after a hard reset (with an orange light displayed) the Airport Utility found the wire-connected Airport.  I ran the utility to set up the Airport and a green light came on. Then the wire-connected Airport was visible on iTunes AirPlay. So I unplugged the Airplay and returned it to the stereo.  The green light came on, but now neither iTunes not the computer based Airport Utility could find it, even though the iDevices could. I repeated this process expecting a different outcome enough times to be certified insane.
So as I sit my computer based (Windows Vista) Airport Utility and computer based iTunes (the new version) cannot locate the Airport Expresses even though the iDevices readily see them. And their green lights display a connection to the network.
I even tried a forced connection by pasting the Airport's IP address (obtained using Airport Utility on iPad) into the manual configuration of the Airport Utility on the computer.  Oddly, once the IP address was entered, the computer based Airport Utility could see the specs of the Airport Express. But when I tried to save or conclude the Computer based Airport Utility configuration, I got an error.
Another odd thing is that the Remote App on my iDevices no longer works either. I can no longer connect to my iTunes library.  The remote simply can't find my Library at all. (I confirmed that Home Sharing is on).  But I noted that in iTunes is indicated that four devices work connected or linked to the Library.  So I had iTunes "forget" the devices "connected" for Remote and tried to reconnect. I got the number could on the iDevise but the devise never appeared in iTunes Devises for selection.
So whatever problem is preventing iTunes from locating my Airport, is also blocking my iDevises from connecting to iTunes.  Meanwhile, my iDevises can sync with iTunes (while wired - I never tried a wireless sync) and can connect via AirPlay to all Airports.
I've researched this for months and found nothing to work. I'm frustrated to the point of doing something drastic like dumping iTunes and finding some other player to manage my music and stream to my stereos. I'd rather not but the vast majority of my Library can't be played over my stereo.
Please help!

Thank you for your note. I am not sure what you mean by "bridge mode" but I have executed the reset several times. In fact, I reset the things enough times to be certified crazy. The thing is, the things are connected to the network. My iDevices can stream music to them via AirPlay and my iDevices can view them in Airport Utility.
The problem appears to be iTunes. iTunes cannot find the AirPort Expresses (even though they are definitely on the network).  Likewise, the Remote App on my iDevices does not work in that although previously matched, they could not access the Library. When I forced a "forget" and tried to re-match, my devices were not discovered/displayed on iTunes.
What I don't understand is why my AirPort Utility on the computer can't find the Expresses but AirPort Utility on my iDevices can find them.
Keep in mind that this is a wireless issue. If I plug the Express into the router and rest it, iTunes sees it just fine. The Remote App does not work still.

  • TS1496 How does this work for a Mac Pro?  Just did an update and my iPod video click is no longer recognized by iTunes or in finder but shows do not disconnect.  What do I do?

I downloaded the latest update of iTunes 11.4 today - Columbus Day.  Went on to purchase songs.  Then attached classic iPod to sync.  upon attached usb to iPod, the "Do Not Disconnect" message appeared.  Waited a long time and iTunes would not recognize my iPod.  (10 minutes minimum.  Gave up counting)  Shut down iTunes and restarted.  Still no recognition.  Restarted computer - Wouldn't start.  Unplugged USB and then it started.  The only way to get computer to start up again was to unplug - now I'm worried that I've just screwed up my iPod.  Upon starting back up - plugged iPod back in - sell no recognition.  Am I up a creek with no paddle now?  My iPod- touch is recognized and I was able to update it successfully.  With that being said, it took a heck of a lot longer than it normally does post update.  Was this the update that no longer likes classic iPods?
I have a brain injury and the classic is helpful at night when I can't fall asleep and I can play soothing stuff to help calm my brain down.  The touch is way to bright and can cause lots of bad reactions due to light sensitivity - way too much blue light to trigger issues.  The click wheel doesn't take so many moves to get to what I need.
Thank you to anyone that can help save my classic.  medical bills are high and I can't afford to buy a new one.  Two hours later, my classic still says do not disconnect and my computer does not recognize.
Thank you to any one for the ability to provide insight and troubleshooting.
    pooped out.

    1. Try Resetting the iPod. Hold Select and Menu for 6-10 seconds - until you see the Apple Symbol.
    2. Use iPod Updater to restore your iPod to factory settings.
See if those two steps clear up your problem.

  • My ipod classic no longer appears in itunes on my mac, but it does appear in finder

I have tried all the steps at this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3540
As well as those suggested by turingtest2 at: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17776595#17776595 (Check your ipod with Diagnostics mode)
    I had:
    Retracts: 495
    Reallocs: 11
    Pending sectors: 0
So I figure that there isn't a problem with my drive. But then the next step requires you to open itunes and access the ipod summary. But obviously this is useless as my ipod does not show in itunes. Though it does in Finder.
I have tried reinstalling iTunes, the apple mobile device drive, I've deleted the com.apple.usbmuxd.plist~orig and AppleMobileDevice.kext files, restarting my Mac disconnecting my ipod and quitting itunes in between to no avail.
    This is ridiculously frustrating.
Other ipods load in my itunes so I'm assuming it is a problem with my ipod not my mac or usb port or whatever else I've been advised to check a million times over.
    Help, please. I beg you.

    Hi there,
No I didn't. Someone suggested in another thread that my iPod was registering as a disk instead of a device, so if I removed my iPod as a disk on Disk Utility then it would reload etc. and show up in iTunes. Which it didn't, and instead just cleared all my music (16,000 songs).
    So frustrating.
Hope if you have the same problem you are able to find a better solution!

  • Ipod shuffle 3 : impossible to detect it on mac (finder, itunes and disk utility)

    Hi,
ipod shuffle 3 : impossible to detect it on mac (finder, itunes and disk utility), but it works, I can listen music. Do you have a solution for me ?
the same on windows... no détection on plug
    thanks
    Fred

Does it still charge when connected?  You said it still works with headphones.
It's possible that the connection port (the headphone jack) on the shuffle has become faulty.  It has different connection points, so it's possible for it to work for headphones (and charging), but not for data.  It's also possible that the USB cable is bad, if you have only one and no alternate way to test it and confirm it's working.
However, you can try these other things.  Shut down the Mac and disconnect all USB peripheral devices, including any hub.  Use this procedure to reset the shuffle
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1655
Start up Mac with nothing connected, except for standard keyboard and mouse (for a Desktop Mac).  Connect the shuffle to a direct USB port.  Check with iTunes, Finder, and Disk Utility to see if there is any improvement.
If that works better, experiment with connecting other USB device, to see if there was some type of USB conflict, or maybe overloading of USB bus (for power).

  • Airport Express no longer visible from iTunes (Utility and Airfoil work)

I've see a couple of people getting errors when trying to use AirTunes, but since I upgraded to iTunes 10, iTunes won't even display my Airport, nor is there any visible way to select multiple speakers (it was in the bottom right previously).
"Look for remote speakers" is checked in iTunes.
Windows firewall is off, and in the firewall I do use, iTunes and all associated apple networking software is set to have full access (send and recieve).
The Airport Express is visible and useable from Airfoil, and also works with the setup utility.
I have just removed all traces of iTunes and anything Apple from the computer and did a fresh install. Still no joy.
This was working perfectly before iTunes 10 - what's changed? It's not my setup, as Airfoil works, as does the setup util.

Same problem here. Everything was OK and working before iTunes 10.1.2.17 update on January 27, 2011 for 64bit Windows.
AE is working when using iTunes & Spotify via Airfoil but not directly from iTunes. Tweaking firewall didn't help either. Well I can live like this thanks to Airfoil but hopefully next iTunes update will fix this problem.

  • Help: Airport Remote Speakers No Longer Showing in iTunes

    Hello!
After 2 years of streaming music to my remote speakers via iTunes and Airport Express (AX), I've had my first real issue. I have not been able to figure this out, and am at my last strand of sanity.
My AX is connected to a pair of speakers in my living room. The AX is on my home network via ethernet cable. I have a Windows XP desktop running the latest version of iTunes in my bedroom. This desktop is on the home network via ethernet. Last night, for some unknown reason, I no longer had the ability to see my remote speakers in iTunes. I tried everything. I turned off the firewalls, reset the routers, made sure that "share via ethernet" was selected in the AX admin utility, but my efforts were futile.
Ive not messed with any "network" settings. I usually leave things as is, yet I've never previously had this "disappearing remote speaker" issue before.
    Things to note:
I do not run any sort of windows firewall.
My Macbook seems to stream music just fine wirelessly to the AX when I turn iTunes (latest version) on.
Any advice / help would be very very very much appreciated.
The only request I have is, I am not as computer savvy as most of you are. If you do have a solution, please break it down so that someone as slow as I am is able to make sense of it and implement it
    Thank you so very much.

Hello GeekDoc. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The fact that your MacBook is successfully streaming iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is telling me that the issue is most likely not iTunes or the AX itself, but with the Ethernet path between your desktop PC and the AX.
As you may already know, iTunes uses AirTunes to stream audio to an AX. Although AirTunes sounds like it can only travel wirelessly, it actually can be transmitted by wire as well. AirTunes is based on Apple's Remote Audio Output Protocol (RAOP). What you may not know is AirTunes takes a minimum of two steps to do the audio streaming: 1) Establish a link with an AX, and 2) Send the audio data.
In order to do both, AirTunes will open ports: 5000 to establish the link, and (typically) 6000 to pass the audio data. I know you said that you are not running any firewalls, but you may want to double-check that none are running between the Ethernet path between the desktop and the AX. I suggest that you (temporarily) disable any firewalls, spyware, or antivirus programs on your desktop ... or any other program that prevents network traffic to see if this eliminates the problem.

  • Itunes using Airport Express 802.11n and Remote app no longer staying connected

I'm running Windows 7. I find that my Remote app either keeps dropping Home Sharing (unless I toggle Home Sharing off/on in Itunes) or if it finds my library it cannot open it through the app. I can play music through my Airport, but it's the remote app that can't seem to connect with my iTunes. I should add that the remote app has the same breakdown on both my iphone 6 and ipad mini 2. So it's not the app, but some problem along the line (Airport express? router? Itunes?) Any suggestions?

    OK, thanks for the info.
You'll need to jot down a setting that the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) is using in order to give the AirPort Express (AX).
Open AirPort Utility, select your AEBS and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Jot down the setting that you see for Wireless Security
    Close AirPort Utility
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly and then release.
Temporarily, position the AX near your AirPort Extreme and connect an ethernet cable from your computer to the AirPort Express
Open AirPort Utility, select the AX and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to name your device, establish a device password (write this down) and adjust time settings
    Click the Wireless tab
Wireless Mode = Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AirPort Extreme wireless network
Enter a check mark next to Enable Ethernet clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as your AEBS that you wrote down
Wireless Password = Same password that your AEBS network is using
    Confirm Password
Click Update at the lower right and the AX will restart. You can close AirPort Utility and disconnect the ethernet cable once you see the message that the settings have been saved to the AX.
After 30-45 seconds, you should have a green light on the AX. Now you can move the AX where it is needed and power it back up again. The ethernet port on the AX is enabled in this type of configuration, so you should be able to connect an ethernet device and connect. You may need to restart the device and/or the entire network to get everything synchronized.

  • Internal AirPort not longer showing in PowerBook

I picked up my PowerBook this evening, and wasn't able to wake it from Sleep Mode. After powering down and and powering back up the system, the Internal AirPort card now seems to have disappeared or no longer be functional.
In Network Configurations it is grayed out and not selectable, if I open System Profiler or "More Info" in the About This Mac screen there is "No information found" when i choose AirPort Card.
Everything was working okay last night when I put it to sleep. I did download updates for QuickTime and iTunes over the weekend, but I can't see how they would affect Network hardware (This does look like a hardware or firmware issue).
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Cheers,
    Paul.

Had the same thing happen to me. Remove your keyboard carefully via the 2 hatches at the top of the keyboard. As you are looking at the exposed area, notice the orange cable to the left. Make sure that it is securely attached. Mine was loose and after pushing it back into place all has been well.

  • Airport Express is no longer able to extend my Airport network.

After the 7.6.1 upgrade, my Airport Express is no longer able to extend my Airport network.  I didn't change any configuration, but as I was confirming the configuration options in Airport Utility, I noticed that the option for the Airport Extreme to "allow this network to be extended" is missing and that my Airport Express had been changed to client mode.  I really need the capability of extending the range of my network, it worked before the firmware upgrade, so how can I get it back?  The hardware are both less than a year old (I bought them in the summer of 2011).

I suggest downloading Airport Utility 5.6
It was released the sameday as 6.0 but it doesn't have the features you used to have as you just found out.

  • ITunes show Airport Express Speakers but will not allow me to choose them

Hi, I just installed and updated my 802.11g airport express. When I open iTunes (version 9- just updated today), I am able to see the speaker selector option on the bottom right of the screen. When I open it, the choice for my laptop speakers and airport speakers both appear; however, only the laptop speakers can be chosen. I am unable to choose the airport speakers at all. I have downloaded all of the latest firmware/software I can think of for both iTunes and the airport express. Please help!!!

After months of having this problem (and a few unsuccessful hours at the Genius Bar), I finally found a fix.
In AirPort Utility, I updated the firmware.
I redid a bunch of other settings, too. Updated to latest iTunes (9), reset my preferences in Security (via Control Panel) and reset the remote speaker option through iTunes (preferences, advanced). But, it was the firmware update that finally got it to work. Sorry I can't be more specific - I'm not a computer buff. Good luck!
    Dang, I hate updates.

  • BUG FOUND!! in Airport Disk programming

I'm betting this is having a bigger issue then most poeple realize as it effects reconnecting to the Airport disk.
Ok after lots of testing I've figured out a major bug in the Airport Disk Programming for Security.
This has only been verified with the following settings:
    1. Airport Disk is configured with Accounts for access
    2. Formatted with HFS+ USB drive.
    Discription:
    1. When connecting to the Airport Disk you get the error:
    "Connection Failed
Unknown user, incorrect password, or login is disabled. Please retype the login information or contact the disk's administrator."
    2. You retype the password and user name and it still says the same thing over and over and over.
    The Cause of problem:
You connect to your Airport Disk the first time with no problem using your login and password. If you cause your connection to be interrupted for a small amount of time and you get that Warning about server disconnect and it shows your airport disk and personal disk with the disconnect button, and they disconnect!! Then you cannot reconnect to the Airport Disk till you reset the Airport Extreme.
To get this Disconnect dialog, it can be caused by a number of common uses, here are a few of the common ones:
    1. you VPN into work (with Airport Disk shares mounted)
    2. you change from wireless to Hardwired connection (with Airport Disk shares mounted)
    3. You let your computer go to sleep when its on a wireless connection but are connected through another wireless access point hardwired to the network (with Airport Disk shares mounted)
When getting your Airport Disk volumes disconnected in this way, The Airport Extreme I'm guessing is deactivating the account and not properly disconnecting the connection. So at this point you have to Reboot the Airport Extreme to let you use your account again on the Airport Disk.
I hope some poeple from Apple actually read these. I've had to reset my Airport extreme about 24 times a day between my wife's 15" MBP and my 17" SR MBP getting this disconnect problem.
And for those poeple out there who keep having Airport Disk connection problems, Lets make sure your not having this problem. To test, simply reboot the airport extreme router & see if you can connect to your Airport Disk Volumes, then once your volumes are mounted turn off your Airport wireless (on your MAC) or unplug your Hardwire till you get the disconnect message. Then try to reconnect to your Airport Volumes after restoring your network connection.
This issue needs to be fixed ASAP!!!!
Please reply to this message with your nominations to try and get this issues raised to a P1 or lvl 1 priority so it's in the next firmware upgrade as it's not an issue with OS x programming side, as a rebot of the computer still doesn't restore the connectivity with the AirPort Disk.

HERES A SOLUTION I POSTED IN ANOTHER THREAD!
    Hi,
I've been trying to work out the Hard Drive problems with the Airport Extreme for a few days and have had some success, so I'll share the info if its any use!
First of all, your printer and both hard drives all run off their own power supply, therefore, you don't need to have a powered usb hub, or just take the plug out and keep using the hub, save yourself a plug!
More importantly, I have had the same thing with the hard drive appearing in the Airport Utility yet whenever I try to connect, it comes up with an error and can't mount, although when I go to network and connect it appears but then goes wrong at the last part mounting, this is what I found...
the first time I plugged hard drive in all worked nicely, however, any time I have unplugged the power to the Aiport Extreme and connected again it'll show but never connect. When I went to make a few partitions I realised that if you unplug the router and repower, whatever HD name its seen before doesn't work until the HD name was changed again. For example....
I called my first HD to connect 'wifiHD', was working fine, next time i unplugged router was still showing in network but I couldn't mount it, I then plugged it to the mac and renamed it 'wifiDISK' for example and plugged it back into the router and it worked fine! Its very strange cos when I needed to unplug it last time I then had the same trouble and just renamed it back to 'wifiHD' it worked fine! Its a little flaw which is a right bugger to find so the bottom line is...
RENAME THE HARD DRIVE EVERY TIME YOU UNPLUG THE ROUTER AND YOU CAN MOUNT IT AGAIN
Another tip is format your HD in 'Mas OSX Extended' as it can be read by both mac and PC over the network. Then as windows isn't the best when you go to 'My Network Places' and 'Add Network Place' if you can't find the HD or even the router then enter
    \\routername\\hardrivename\
in this format into the box, it'll take a mo but it'll then ask for the password! I personally have my hard drive guest access read + write so I entered
    user: guest
password: base station password (or disk password as selected in airport utility)
    and it all worked!
Sorry for the long explanation, hope this has helped!

  • ITunes 8 + Airport hiccups

While I'm grateful I haven't experienced the BSOD errors other Windows users have experienced, I have found that immediately after I installed iTunes 8, any music I play wirelessly through my Airport Express will periodically drop out for a second.
Once a minute or so is annoying, but once every 5-10 seconds makes iTunes unusable.
I have both an Airport Extreme base station and an Airport Express behind the stereo. iTunes is up to date, as is the firmware of the Airports.
If anyone else has encountered this problem and/or has a possible solution, I'd appreciate hearing it.

  • Airport express connects to internet, will play via airplay, but not through itunes.

    Hello all-
I just updated to the latest iTunes 12.1.1.4 64 bit and now itunes can no longer send music to my airport express.  It is directly connected via an ethernet cable.  The wifi portion of the airport express works, I can find it in the airport utility, I can send music via airplay from my iphone...just cannot connect to the device in itunes to play music.  I also tried airfoil and it cannot find it either.  Thanks for the help

Thank you for responding, Duane, I'll give it a try. I suspect the cordless phone is the culprit. I do wonder though, if it is why my Safari and Mail aren't kicking in even if the Wireless Network is working fine.
If I may repeat that part of the issue: often, when downstairs, I actually can connect to the wireless network, and I see in the network connection window the words "Connected via PPoe", yet Safari will not connect to the internet, claiming "could not find PPoe"; and Mail will not connect to the online server, instead reading "working offline" no matter what I do. At such times it's almost as if Safari and Mail are in a different non-functioning universe than my functioning wireless network. Why won't they go along for the ride?
