Airport not as good as it was
For some reason, after installing Leopard, my airport connectivity at home is terrible. The same router, works fine on my friend's Mac Book which is still running Tiger.
It's working now - obviously - since I'm posting this, but intermittently, the airport connects to the network, but has a self assigned IP address. If i restart or turn Airport off and on again... maybe it'll work.
Leopard is great in so many ways, but I really want my airport connection to be reliable like it was in the past.
Using a D-Link ADSL wireless router/modem which has and is working just fine in Tiger.
I found the same issue at my home. I have two Airport devices. I upgraded a G4 1ghz DP and Powerbook G4 1gighzs, G5 tower. Since upgrading to 10.5 my wireless connections has gone to the dogs. An example would be my Powerbook 3 feet from an Airport Express and my signal strength was only two bars. I am finding that with all my macs. Yes, everything is updated, and properly configurated. My systems with Tiger did not show this issue at all. All systems and the entire network was rebooted. Still have the low bars in Airport software showing up
Any explaination and fix would be greatly appreciated

E3200 - Not as good as I was expecting
We live in a condo and the main computer and modem are upstairs. We had another name brand router installed and got good service everywhere except in the master bedroom downstairs. I went to did some research and was told this router would be the one to get. Upon arriving to the store I talked to the gentlemen in this department and he assured me this was the one to get. Once home the unit was installed in working in just a few minutes. Really easy set-up! I went downstairs and tried connecting on my iPad and the signal was about the same as it was with the other brand that was 1/4 the cost of this unit. I got my daughters laptop and tried it and it had about the same signal. The distance ias the crow flies is only about 50 feet. It is about 35feet out of bedroom and across living room to be under the office then you add about 15 feet up makes 50 feet. I checked for newer firmware but nothing available. I don't think this unit performs any better than cheaper units of same brand or others.

What's not so great: Price, range not good for multiple floorsWell, there are few things you should keep in mind with regards to N routers:
1) For the best possible speeds, you need to be using WPA2-AES as your security mode. Any other security mode will see your speed/range capped.
2) Any G devices in your wireless network will tend to hamper the performance of your overall network.
3) Ensure that your router is running the latest firmware from homesupport.cisco.com The new firmware includes performance enhancements and fixes.
4) The router by default uses a channel setting of auto, which means that it would keep switching channels depending on the interference. I’d recommend you set it to a fixed channel. Usually, 1, 3, 6 and 9 give you the best performance depending on your environment of course. I’d suggest you try different channels, observing each for a while, to see which gives you the best performance. You can follow the link here on how to change channels. -

Openreach fellow turned up and installed the Infinity2 service today. He said on the way out that he'd gotten a full 80/20 on his little gadget that he used. However when I tested it with (the last 12 hours) I've been getting inconsistent results such as 4/8, 10/10 and most of the time 20/18. I've tried it both via ethernet to the HH3 and wirelessly.
The IP profile is set to 77.43/20, are the speeds meant to gradually climb over the first 10 teething days? Because the engineer said that the speed we get now should be the same after the X amount of days. The distance to the cabinet is approx 250 metres.
Or are my conditions not capable of getting the the max IP profile?
Thanks in advanceThe DLM [Dynamic Line Management] system in the cabs monitor all lines for the first ten or so days to not only check the speed but also the stabilty of the line.
You will get some erratic reading while the DLM decides what is the most stable sync for your line,it does this for all lines at all times,but mostly during the first 10 days following a new connection.
If you just use it and try not to reset your OR modem [the white box] or you HH3,then your sync and IP profile should give you very near to the estimated speeds and sync that you were quoted at the point of sale.
BT do not answer any speed querys unless the line speed falls below about 12Mbps on infinty,so imo you should just wait out the ten days and it should smooth out. -
Hello - I live in the UAE and my itunes account is regsitered here. Unfortunately the choice of music is not as good as when my account was registered in the UK. I cannot register my account in the UK as my bank details are all in the UAE now. HELP!
Sorry, but no help is possible. You can only use the UAE iTunes Store, and Apple can only offer what content they are able to license for sale in that country. You'll have to look elsewhere for content. Whether there are any other download stores able to sell in the UAE I don't know. You may need to purchased CDs and import them into iTunes.

my iphone is now just coverd with case and the back house is crasedEtisalat, Mobinil and Vodafone provide warranty service in your country. You can also search Google for a 3rd party repair shop near you.

Im not very good at troubleshooting, but I have played around with the system preferences. My airport connection is fine as well as the ethernet. Firewall says its not connected, (im not sure if that matters or not?)
I have subtracted my network from the list, restarted, and then put it back and and restarted...nothing seems to be working. Iam in the middle of a correspondace course and i really need my internet back...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

Migration from Linksys G to Airport not working
I'm upgrading from a Linksys WRT54g to an airport extreme. The previous setup was the linksys and a 4 port hub with a combination of wired and wireless connections. Our apple server, printer and a few other devices are hardwired. We have about 10 imacs and 1 Vista laptop. All the wireless imacs and vista need to connect to the hardwired server to run a filemaker database and be able to print to the hardwired printer via wireless connection.
Some imacs are running OS 10.4.11 but that should still work with the AP extreme since it's multi mode for wireless g and N.
The airport extreme and an 8 port netgear Gb hub are replacing the previous setup.
I've used the Airport utility on a 10.5.8 imac to find and configure the Airport and most macs find it but I still don't have internet or lan connection. I'm using WPA because that's all the older macs will support. The internet connection is a T1. I'm also getting the 169.xxx.xxx.xx ip address for the airport by default. How can I change this to 192.168.1.1 and still use DHCP?
I'm also getting kernal panics on several of the G5 imacs while switching airport connections and/or after configuring this new wireless connection.
Are the any special considerations I should be aware or a firmware upgrade? I'm following the instructions very carefully. Doesn't the Airport extreme provide the DHCP for the ipv4 connections and shouldn't the wireless macs connect to other hardwired macs with no problem?

This is a self-assigned IP address which indicates that the AirPort is not connected to or is not currently communicating with a valid Internet connection.
How can I change this to 192.168.1.1 and still use DHCP?
You will continue to see the 169.x.x.x error until you have a good Internet connection.
By default, the AirPort Exteme will use the 10.0.1.x range for local network IP assignments. If you want to change this to the 192.168.x.x range, you would do the following:
Open AirPort Utility - click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon
Click the DHCP tab
Change to the 192.168.x.x range on this page
By default, the AirPort Extreme will be at 192.168.1.1 if you use this range and have a valid Internet connection.

My review of X1 Carbon - Not very good...
Well, I just got my X1 Carbon yesterday. So far, not so good.
I have i7 with 8GB of RAM, 256 SSD and WWAN. Pretty much maxed out on the upgrades.
1. The computer is litterally crooked. When I place it on a hard flat surface (my kitchen counter), it doesn't lay flat. There is about 1 mm gap below the front right rubber foot and the counter. So every time I touch the trackpad, I get a click from the laptop tapping on the counter. Lovely. This is annoying as hell. Poor workmanship by Lenovo.
2. USB 3.0 Dock is an absolute joke. I am using the Targus ACP71USZ. They are all the same, regardless of which model you buy, since they all use Displaylink technology. On the m,onitors connected to the dock, the mouse responds with tiny delays, so it is very annoying and difficult to accurately point the mouse. Its bad with both HDMI and DVI. HDMI is worse. Ethernet, is pathetic. I don't even get a 1mb download speed at speedtest.net. Other computers on the same copnnection get over 20mb. Ping was 800ms vs 5ms for other computers. Absolutely pathetic. Wifi gave me 7mb with 100ms ping. Then I tried connecting the ethernet cable to the dongle that comes with the X1, directly to the X1, and not the dock. I got 18mb and 5ms ping. Much better, but this adds to the fact that the dock is a $200 peice of garbage. The only good way to use an external monitor is via the mini displayport on the X1 itself. So basically here is my setup. I have 2 external monitors. One goes to the DVI on the dock. Other to displayport on the X1. Ethernet dongle on the USB of the X1, power cable on the X1, USB to connect the X1 to the dock. I have to plug in 4 cables to the X1 just to dock it. Kind of defeats the purpose of the dock, and its worse since the dock works like crap anyway.
If I were to just use the X1 as a laptop, then it would be fine. But this machine absolutely stinks when used with a dock.
I am alrerady considering putting it on ebay.As for the T430s and the Series 3 dock I have, keep in mind it's the 135W dock I bought when I received the ThinkPad W510 for work. The problem I see with my dock and the T430s is that the T430s doesn't remember the configuration and state. So when I dock the notebook and boot it, it doesn't always display on the attached monitors. Or it changes which monitor is the primary. Or it displays only on one monitor at 800x600 resolution.
In short, it is unpredictable and very frustrating.
I have seen enough reports from other ThinkPad Optimus based models in this generation to know it isn't just me. There seems to be some issues with the chipset, drivers, and hardware integration.
There were no such issues with the T420 or T420s.
It is sad to see products take a step backward. You always think and expect continual improvement from generation to generation but it simply isn't true. You roll the dice each time. -
My Computer will not let me open itunes at all. It tells me that the itunes libary can not be read because it was created by a newer version.
If you still have an issue you may have to see about using the iTunes version (application) included with Snow Leopard 10.6 from the installer or an another one if available online, and see if that will install.
Sometimes you may have uninstall the bits left in your system by the earlier (or later) iTunes installers; as they all leave a trace and these can stop a different version of iTunes from being installed.

Why is playback video quality not as good as the source?
Hi. I'm not new to PrE but am new to the forum.
I've been using PrE 2 for about 7 years. I got a newer computer running Windows 7 and basically was forced to upgrade to PrE 12 because PrE 2 didn't run very well on the newer machine. Once I installed PrE 12, I was eager to jump into my first project on this machine.
I expected that with a newer machine and the latest software, I would get outstanding results--hopefully much better than what I always got with PrE 2 on the old machine. With PrE 2, it was not uncommon that the imported video seemed lossy on playback or for whatever other reason seemed not as good as the source video.
Unfortunately, the results on the new/new were no better than the old/old. So I switched to my wife's (even newer) machine running Windows 8 and got the same results. Then I thought that perhaps the output to DVD would be better than what I saw in the PrE editor. No dice.
The video quality of the source isn't the greatest (see below), but I expected that the PrE 12 would be no worse.
What went wrong?

I purchased one several years ago and found it extremely helpful. Please excuse if I mention things you may already be aware of, but I did not want to take anything for granted.
The installed RAM on Machine 1 is too low for HD work, and I wonder about the processor on Machine 2 even though it has more installed RAM than that on Machine 1. For now, I will bypass the usual drills and get to the source media and project settings.
1. From what I can put together, your source media from iPhone 4 are 720p up to 30 frames per second. That usually translates into a variable frame rate which can be problematic for Premiere Elements. The variable can lead to audio out of sync, but not necessarily. If all else fails, then it is onto HandBrake or the like to change the variable into a constant frame rate.
2. One of the features of version 11 and 12 is the program taking over the setting of the project setting based on the properties of the first video drag to the Timeline. Some times it does it OK, sometimes not. When not, then you set the project preset manually yourself based on what you know to be the properties of your source media. Please refer to the following which includes how to set the project preset manually.

Based on what I have read about the properties of the iPhone 4 video, I would suggest the project preset (assuming a NTSC set up)

AVCHD-LITE 720p30
One of the important things to remember is that Premiere Elements 11 and 12 have as their default project preset
NTSC
AVCHD
Full HD1080i30
and not the NTSC DV Standard of versions earlier than 11.
When 11 and 12 do not get the automatic project preset correct, they do not give you the closest fit, rather they give you their
default NTSC AVCHD Full HD1080i30 which is not going to be appropriate for 720p video.
Classically it is written if you have the correct project preset you should have no colored line over the content when you bring the video to
the Timeline manually set. But, just the variable frame rate can trigger the unrendered indicator (orange instead of red in versions 11 and 12).
So, rendering the Timeline would be indicated to get the best possible preview under these circumstances.
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on either of your computers?

Moved G5 to new location, airport not working
I just moved my G5 downstairs to the same exact place where I typically use my laptop (powerbook G4). Never had an issue with the laptop recognizing airport and going online, but now my G5 won't show any networks at all and I can't get airport to work.
Is there something I should be changing in the settings or how can I get airport to work on my G5 in the new location?

No problem, I do quite a bit of experimenting with my Macs and find out some weird things, but some are working to my advantage, I always operate my Power Mac G5 without the side panel now, but of course keep the air deflector in place, unless theres company coming over, then I replace the side access panel. Also, there is an antenna inside the G5. It runs along the opposite side of the G5 case behind the logic board to the rear of the case, where the external antenna is connected. So by removing the side access panel, it allows for moderate reception. =) As mentioned earlier though, definitely not as good as the external antenna, but when used without the access panel in combination with the external antenna, it get better reception than my 1.25GHz iMac G4 did. And by the way, this also is true for Bluetooth as well, as I have a Bluetooth Board installed in my G5. =) I loaded my G5 once I bought it (Used).

If you want to show Form1, you can use form.show() method

Airport: Not Configured after 10.4.7 update
I just bought a new macbook 2.0Ghz, proceeded through the first-time installation wizard setup my wifi settings, and everything worked fine.
At first boot in macosx i had my wifi working and i was able to browse and download things.
I installed the 10.4.7 macosx update, restarted, then lost my wifi connection.
The signal indicator reads
Airport: Not Configured
and in the network settings under 'Network Port Configuration' I see a greyed out 'AirPort' configuration. I can"t enable it. I can't add a new one either since the only choices are Bluetooth, Builtin firewire/ethernet, 6 to 4
I found a knowledge base article describing a similar problem:

But the described workaround doesn't seem to work.
I also tried to reinstall the 10.4.7 update using the combo installer, the issues remain.
I ran also the permission repair utility at various stages in the process, it never detected any errors.
In the System Profiler under network/Airport section, i see:
Airport Card Information:
Type: AirPort Extreme [..]
Locale: Worldwide
Firwmare: 0.1.24
Current Wireless Network: AirPort is currently turned off
I know the card is there and working, since linux happily uses it when i boot in linux.
Has anyone any clue about what's happening ?
Is there a simple 'enable' button somewhere, or is that a known isse with 10.4.7 updater, how can i revert to 10.4.6 then ?

Macbook Mac OS X (10.4.7)It's actually a bit more weird:
When stepping through the first-time boot wizard, it asks to select the wifi essid from a list, the scan is ok and shows my network, and i type the WEP key in the box, click next. The 'Configuring your computer' blinks then the setup goes on and asks for my .Mac account and so on.
After the wizard completes i'm able to surf the web and connected BUT !
The signal meter is always empty and clicking on it states 'Airport: Not Configured'. When i open the network preferences it says under 'current status' that i'm using the builtin ethernet device ??!!
The IP and dhcp re-lease stuff work in the UI even if it's clearly not the builtin ethernet card that i'm using since the IP is from the wifi router, and there is no cable plugged in, and i can access the internet.
No mention of Airport port in the setup, so i can't configure it.
As soon as i restart the connection is gone, and the setup created by the first-time wizard is gone.
So the situation is now i have a 10.4.6 os with no airport.. -

Unless you just attempted to downgrade iTunes to an earlier verison this is probably a sign of a corrupt library.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
Alternatively, depending on exactly when and why the library went missing, there may be a more recent .tmp file in the main iTunes folder that can be renamed as iTunes Library.itl to restore the library to a recent state.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
I've noticed more of these missing library posts of late and a common factor to most since I started asking is AVG Anti-Virus. It seems in some cases it might be at least part of the reason why the library file disappears. Try excluding the iTunes folder from any AV scanning process.
