Airport not detecting SSID

Hey, I have been trying to get my iBook to connect to my wireless network but it just ain't happening. I have d-link DI-524 router setup with a adsl line and my ibook cannot detect the SSID even though I have it set to broadcast and it still won't find it even if I search for it manually (for trouble-shooting sake there isn't even a WEP to complicate things). Furthermore my windows PC can both find and pick up the SSID signal(its not hosting the signal without any problem. To make things even more confusing my ibook is perfectly capable of picking up my neighbors signals and it works just fine when picking up the wireless signal at my university. I have attempted to configure the network settings both manually and automatically but to no avail. I'm sure i'm probably overlooking some inanely simple detail but this is really starting to annoy me.
in point form summary
- Cannot detect SSID broadcast from router with iBook, but can with PC
- iBook can detect pretty much everyother SSID in the world
-Technology hates me

Hi brodiemn and welcome to Apple's Discussions.
The solution to a similar problem in This thread was to use Network Setup Assistant.
Have you tried it?
Good luck!

    Hello,
I see that you posting from India. I had this same problem a few months ago when I was out of the US. The iPhone can recognize wireless networks that are broadcasting on a broader range of wireless channels than my MacBook Pro. I was in France and my iPhone would connect to the wireless network but my MacBook would not even detect it. This was because the wireless network was broadcasting on channel 13. This is a normal channel in many parts of the world but we are not allowed to use this channel in the US. My MacBook can only connect to networks broadcasting on channels 1 through 11 on a 2.4GHz network. Try checking your router to see what channel it is broadcasting on and change it to a channel between 1 and 11 and see if that helps

  • Airport not detecting any Networks

I was working fine yesterday with my macbook late 2008 aluminum unibody. Then I left the laptop for a while to have some lunch. When I went back to my mac it hanged so I forced quit some applications then did a hard shutdown. After which my Airport cannot find any network. I did a hardware test... all is okay (does this also test the airport card?). I also tried to manually input the SSID and the WEP Password (13 Characters) where I get an error of Connection timed out.
    Can anybody help me?

    Open /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utilities
Once in Disk Utilities select your drive in the left window. Then from the right window select First Aid (First Aid will be selected by default).
    Verify Disk:
In the "First Aid" window towards the bottom, select Verify Disk. If "Verify" comes back reporting errors, then post back here as we will have to give you further instructions on booting from your install disk.
Also at the bottom note the S.M.A.R.T status, it should read "Verified"
    Repair Permissions:
In the "First Aid" window towards the bottom select "Repair Disk Permissions"

  • Strange case of airport not detecting network

The airport menu often fails to show networks that are definitely being detected by the airport card - they show up strong and clear with stumblers - but I can't join the network either with the menu or the join network dialog. This can happen on networks that are very close to the computer - like three feet away - so not a signal strength issue. I often have to wait minutes for the machine to finally "see" my own airport. Curiously, it happens on three different networks, so I don't think it is just a problem with my own airport. Two networks are apple airports, the other a Linksys. I tried removing one of them from preferred network list, but that did not help.
Anyone any suggestions for resolving such a weird problem?
    Peter

    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations: Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
See if any issues pop up.

  • Airport not detecting networks

I am trying to find my LAN with my MacPro but it is not able to find them. I was online last night using Aiport (at a slow speed, but still using it).
Right now I am using a PC Laptop that is finding and connecting to any WLAN available.
I have tried to shutdown, restart, turn off airport but nothing remedys the problem.
    What can I do?

    Hi,
I had the same problem with my old Airport base station (graphite model). Very hard to connect to it, after turning my MacBook on or after waking up from sleep mode.
All problems disappeared when I started using an Airport Express access point and unplug the old (apparently the fact that it was in range still caused problems).
I take it the more recent wifi cards such as the one in the MacBook's don't handle the quite old Airport too well.
    Cheers,
    Bas.

  • AirPort - Not detecting Windows XP

I´m trying to acess my air port (using AirPort Utility) and Windows XP is not founding my airport ????
Im trying to rescan my airport !
    Some point that I tried:
    1.Acess my Air port using a cable;
    2.My firewall is turned off;
3.I reistalled my Airport utility 3 times.
    Somebody could help me ?
    DELL Windows XP

I do not have a PC here running XP to test, but if I did I would do the following:
    1) Turn off the Windows Firewall in the Control Panel
    2) Temporarily disable the anti-virus software
    3) Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express
    4) Connect the Express using Ethernet, open AirPort Utility to see if it will connect to the Express
    5) If still no luck, in AirPort Utility, click on the File menu in the upper left corner of the screen and select Configure Other. Enter 10.0.1.1 for the IP address and "public" (without the quotes) as the password
If still no luck, the HP is likely running some other applications that may be interfering with the connection.  I assume that the AirPort Express is not defective and the Ethernet port on the PC is operational.

  • Airport not detecting wireless networks

I have a MacBook that is about 5 years old. Latley, Airport has had trouble recognizing any wireless networks. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. I know that there are networks available because other devices are connected. Recently it has stopped working all together. Has anyone else experienced the same problem and know how to fix?

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM
    MacBook Pro
Laptops with a battery you can remove
    Shut down the computer.
Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
    Remove the battery.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Airport not detected in Tiger Server ?

Recently I installed a unused copy of Tiger Server on my MacBook Pro at the office.
Weird thing when I go in the Network configs.. I can't see the Airport Card.
But before with Tiger it was working fine.
And also when I boot in Windows XP (BootCamp).. there is no wireless problems.. I see the card and I can use it!
Is there a way to.. maybe try to manually load the kernel extension or completely reinstall the driver ? Would this fix the problem ?

Oh crap.. I was sure I had EVERYTHING..
Looks like there was a couple of updates to do and now it's working perfectly
    Sorry for that

  • Airport card works in 10.1, HW test passes, but not detected at all in 10.4

Ok, Hi. I'll first admit this is my first post so go easy on me!
I just bought a used iBook G3 and it was working fine for a while until about a month ago when all kinds of weird things stared happening. Some of which those problems I solved from reading previous topics from these forums - but anyways, I'll skip all my other problems and get right to my current one.
First off here is the complete specs:
12.1" iBook G3 "dual USB series"
    500MHz PPC processor
    128+256MB ram = 384MB RAM
15GB hard drive (NOW 160GB HARD DRIVE!)
No Airport Card (NOW ONE HAS BEEN ADDED!)
Multiple OS's - OS9 and 10.1 were included (have original disks)
I also have a set of 10.4 Tiger CD-ROM disks
Anyways, here is basically what is happening. I bought an Airport card off eBay for my iBook. I installed it about a week ago. I booted into 10.4 Tiger and it did not detect the card. Tried to do the manual setup with the wizard and it said there was no card attached. I went into the system profiler and is said No info available under the airport section. I then booted to my "apple hardware test disk" and ran the full/extended test. It passed everything (including the Airport card) so I know that is not the problem. I then booted into OS X 10.1 and lone behold the card is detected and is working without any fooling around with! Instant wireless internet! So I know that the card is working, but I want to use it in Tiger as 10.1 is almost worthless. So I boot into Tiger again knowing that the card is working, and Tiger still does not recognize it! I even booted into OS 9 and it detected the card (although it was having some connection problems, but at least I know that it IS detecting it.)
Here is what I tried (so you can cross these suggestions off your list! lol)
I've deleted the Airport "ktext" files, etc. (can't remember the actual names of the files, but I've cleared all of those caches and still no luck.)
    I've zapped PRAM
    I rest NVRAM
    I rest the PMU.
I did a Arcive and install of 10.4
...All of which did not help. Again, the card worked in 10.1, but 10.4 is completely blind and can't find it!
Now we are caught up to today. I was having many other odd problems and it all lead to my hard drive probably being bad. So toady I finally bit the bullet and bought a new hard drive from Best Buy. It took me forever to install it, but I did it, and it works! Now I have 160GB (make that only 128GB detected) of space. I partitioned it 4 ways as well:
    "Tiger" - 80GB
    "Other OS" - 30GB
    "Extra Space 1" - 10GB
    "Extra Space 2" - 8GB
    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx- 128GB Total
So now that I have a new hard drive (that I was told would fix all of my problems because my old one was "bad" I thought I would have it working today, but no. So I put in the brand new drive, partitioned it, booted off my Tiger disk, installed it on the 80GB partition. The install went fine. So I now have 10.4 on the new drive. Seems to be a lot faster then my old drive! I did the combo updater (which I downloaded on my iMac and transfered to a flash drive and loaded on to my iBook) Ran the updater, and now it is running 10.4.11! But then I realized, the Airport card is STILL not detected in Tiger!!! - I thought the new hard drive would solve all my problems as I was staring from scratch, but no, there is still a problem!
I ran the Apple hardware test disk again, full test, and it said my Airport card is still fine. I didn't reinstall 10.1 yet (nor did I want to, I was hoping Tiger would work for what I wanted) but it seems now that I might have to go back and install 10.1 again. I don't know what it will prove - other then it will work again, but I don't want to use 10.1 so I'm not going to bother doing all that again.
Anyways, after looking into this further, I brought up the system boot log (of tiger) and found these lines interesting, and hopefully useful to you guys:
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortFirmware: start Sta f/w download
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortDriver: F/W download failed
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortFirmware: start Sta f/w download
    localhost DirectoryService[64]: Lunched version 1.8 (v346)
localhost kernel[0]: AirPortDriver: F/W download failed
it then lists the eithernet address and then ramblers on about other nonsense. If anyone needs the other "stuff" i'll try and save the whole log file and attach it here if anyone needs it.
So could anyone please help? It seems as if i've done everything, and still can not get an answer on why it is doing this, and how to fix it!
    Please Help!
Thanks you so much, and sorry for the long yet detailed message!!!
    -Scott

Hey, just wanted to post an update to let everyone know what I ended up doing.
Bottom line with the airport card I had is that is was "bad" - well only kind of. I got an email from a guy from a local PC repair shop. He told me he had just gotten one of those cards in and had it for sale for only $25. So I was chatting with this guy and he said it would be alright if I brought my iBook right in his shop, swap the cards and try it before I buy it. So I did so. Very nice guy and we swapped out the cards no problem. Right away it recognized his card and worked! I then downloaded the Airport update and ran it. (remember before, when I tried to update my card, after it restarted it was no longer recognized.) So we did the update with HIS card in and after it restarted, it STILL worked! It also added WPA support as well! We then booted into to Tiger (remember the old card wasn't recognized at all in tiger) and it ALSO worked in Tiger! I also had WPA support right away! So I bought the card and was all happy that it was all working again! I then figured out what the problem was with the old one.
My original card was one of the "original" originals. Then, Apple "changed" the original cards and replaced ones with "128bit" support. (this is all before the extreme cards) I then found out that the newer original cards (the one the guy just sold me) are worth MORE because these are the cards that are compatible with the newer update (128bit WEP, and WPA) The cards looked exactly the same, but the newer card has "128 Bit" printed on the bottom of the card.
SO, it ended up, I was "asking too much" out of the card I had - as the card I had did not support what I was trying for it to do. Where as the newer card I bought IS compatible with the update, and worked like a piece of cake. So all in all, the first card I had isn't "dead" it just wasn't working with what I wanted it to. So I'm going to end up selling it. Hopefully craigslist, but I will get more for it on eBay. so that is what I'm going to do. I'll just make sure to tell people this "story" so they don't try and do the same thing I did. But for someone with an even older laptop, an older OS, or an older router, this card will work just fine for them.
So thats basically it! Looks like I got everything working!

  • My Airport Express is not detected in airport radar on iBook

    Hi,
I am hoping that someone can help me with this. I am at loss as to what to do next!
My Airport Express has been working fine since I returned from holiday a week ago. However, I tried to select my airport express network from my airport radar on my iBook last night and it did not detect it. It detects other networks but not mine!
My network is not protected (secure) yet as I could not install the airport setup utility that came with the Aiport Express Base Station as you need Mac OS X 10.3 or later and I only have 10.2.8. I am waiting to upgrade to Leopard in October (in the UK) so I can install the airport setup utility. Until now, my airport has been working fine. I initially set it up by copying and pasting all the settings from the ethernet tab from (system preferences-network) into the airport tab and it worked fine.
I know that the airport express is working fine as it is permanently green adn I can connect to the internet via ethernet if I plug the ethernet cable into the iBook.
I thought last night that someone had used my unsecure connection and created a secure network behind a password for themselves. However, this cannot be the case as I have PDA and it detected my connection from Airport Express (I recognised its name) and it connected immediately.
Why will the radar on my iBook not detect my connection from Airprt Express? Please help!
    Emily_1981

Please refer to the information already posted above:
If you see A1084 or A1088 there, your older Express is not supported by the newer version of AirPort Utility that you have.
If you have another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC, then you could use that computer to administer the older Express and it will work on the network along with the AirPort Extreme.
If the Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard or PC does not "see" the A1084 Express, you will need to "hard reset" the Express by holding in the reset button for 10 seconds and waiting a full minute for the Express to restart. Then, reconfigure the Express again.

  • AirPort Utility not detecting Airport Base Station nor Airport Express

Earlier today, we were listening to music on multiple speakers (computer and airtunes / airport express) as we always do. Nothing new here. Stereo speakers stopped and computer lost connection with Airport Express. Couldn't get it to reconnect. Unplugged airport express and plugged it back in - no dice. Hard restart.....AirPort Utility detected it once and I tried to reconfigure. Got an error message at the end of configuration.....
    Now.....
Airport Utility doesn't even pick up the Airport Express. Not only that, it doesn't pick up the Airport base station, which we use for our internet connection (and I'm using right now). Both are old - Airport base station is the round small anthill looking one (probably about 6 or 7 years old) and airport express is about 5 years old. Never had a problem with either. Airport Utility is 5.4.2.
For now, Airport base station is working, but I don't have access to it via Airport Utility. Airport express just flashes amber......

    Welcome to the discussions!
Not sure what to suggest that you may have not already tried. I would recommend that you start with the base station first to see if you can access the settings in AirPort Utility.
Have you tried connecting an ethernet cable from your computer directly to one of the LAN ports on your base station to see if that will help? Power down your base station and computer before you hook up the ethernet cable. If no luck at first, leave the ethernet cable connected as sometimes the base station will simply "appear" after a few minutes.
If still no luck after several tries, your only alternative is to hard reset the router back to factory defaults and try to reconfigure it.
Once you get the base station back, you can use the same procedure on the Express to see if you can reconfigure it.

my airport express in not detected by my airport utility, and i want to conected to the wi fi of an internet conection.

In order for AirPort Utility to be able to detect your AirPort Express you need to either be connected to the AirPort Express via WiFi or by connecting an ethernet cable from your computer to the Express.

  • After Security Update 2010-001: Airport Card Not Detected

Currently running OS X 10.5.8 on a Mid 2009 MacBook Pro.
Here's the issue. When I boot up the machine and click the AirPort drop down it tells me that there is no airport card detected. Under system profiler it says the same thing. If I boot to a 10.6 Mac OS Install DVD and open system profiler, the AirPort card is detected. This occurred after a reboot prompted by the Security Update 2010-001.
So far I have repaired permissions and repaired disk. No fix.
I reset the PRAM/NVRAM and SMC. No fix.
I booted to an OS X image on an external drive. No fix.
I cannot boot to the Apple Hardware Test (D at startup) because my company requires PGP disk encryption. I could decrypt but this would take at least 6 hours (not counting re-encrypting afterwards).
I tried replacing the extensions. No fix.
There were no firmware updates applied or any other major OS updates.
Anyone have anything else I can attempt?

    anyone else see that??
Yes, Already covered in full here. Strange but no problem.
