Airport not distributing DNS servers over network

Hi everyone,
I connect to the Internet over ADSL (ISP: Arnet Highway, Buenos Aires, Argentina) using PPPoE from my MacBook Pro.
I have my ADSL modem connected to the Airport Extreme (802.11n) and distributing IP over DHCP just fine. Every device that joins the network obtains a valid IP.
However, DNS servers aren't distributed by the router over the network. Every connected device has to be manually configured to set the DNS servers of my ISP to be able to resolve hosts, instead of 'asking' these addresses to the router, as it should be.
Initially I thought there might be a problem obtainig the DNS servers from the ISP. So in the Airport Utility, in Internet / PPPoE settings, I've manually set my ISP's DNS servers, which should be distributed over the network to all connected devices.
This doesn't happen, and every somebody new joins my wireless network I have to manually change the DNS servers for that connection which, as I'm sure you'll agree with me, can be quite annoying. Not to mention what would happen if my ISP decides to use dynamic DNS addresses.
Thanks for any help you might provide.
Cheers.

Hello belbo,
I connect to the Internet over ADSL using PPPoE from my MacBook Pro.
Is your Macbook Pro Network configured to use PPPoE or DHCP?
I have my ADSL modem connected to the Airport Extreme (802.11n) and distributing IP over DHCP just fine. Every device that joins the network obtains a valid IP.
Is NAT enabled on the AE? Are the valid IP Address obtained from your ISP or from the AE?
However, DNS servers aren't distributed by the router over the network. Every connected device has to be manually configured to set the DNS servers of my ISP to be able to resolve hosts, instead of 'asking' these addresses to the router, as it should be.
When you setup the AE to use PPPoE did you enter a Domain Name or a DHCP Client ID?
Initially I thought there might be a problem obtainig the DNS servers from the ISP. So in the Airport Utility, in Internet / PPPoE settings, I've manually set my ISP's DNS servers, which should be distributed over the network to all connected devices.
The DNS servers listed in the AE aren't distributed to each Network Device but are only used to translate names into IP addresses when need by a Network Device.
This doesn't happen, and every somebody new joins my wireless network I have to manually change the DNS servers for that connection which, as I'm sure you'll agree with me, can be quite annoying. Not to mention what would happen if my ISP decides to use dynamic DNS addresses.
If your AE is distributing IP Address using DHCP and NAT then this should not be a problem but I'm not sure without more information about the questions I asked.
Later.

  • Unix command in ARD to remove DNS Servers from Network prefs?

I need to know how to send a unix command to remove DNS Servers in Network preferences. I need the DNS Servers field to be blank. Can this be done?

Our network administrator is getting ready to change the IP address of our DNS server. This means I have over 30 Macs that will be needing changes to their DNS settings. Since each machine is setup with limited access to the system prefs, that means I have to go to each machine and log in as the admin user to make this change. In the interest of saving time, is this something I can do with Remote Desktop and how? Would I use the same commands in this post and replace dns1 with our DNS' new IP address? Will this distrupt the users access to the network when I do so?
    Thanks for any help.

  • DNS set up when not distributing dns

Ok it's not clear but let me try, I am in a place where they give me an ip address and my domain names come from godaddy and are directed from there. sorry I'm french. Here's my question,
Do I need to setup DNS on leopard server if I want to use all the services, open dir, qtss , podcast producer ect. or since I don't distribute dns, can I not use the dns service.
I'm not sure I expressed my self properly so ask questions if you need to know more.

Do I need to setup DNS on leopard server if I want to use all the services, open dir, qtss , podcast producer ect. or since I don't distribute dns, can I not use the dns service.
If you want to run your own directory service for your clients then you SHOULD run your own DNS server. This is essential if you're setting up your server in a private-class network (e.g. 10.1.x.x or 192.168.x.x) since GoDaddy are not going to be able to resolve your internal hostname(s).
The fact that no external users will ever query your server for DNS lookups doesn't matter - your own machine will and that's what counts.

  • OfficeJet 4500 will not print two sided over network

I'm running on Windows 7 with an OfficeJet 4500 G510n-z over WiFi.  Printer works great except that it will not print two sided.  We've used a non-WiFi 4500 to print two sided before.  With the new printer the first pages print and the pop-up shows on the laptop (prompt to flip paper over) but nothing happens.  The second pages never print.
I've run all of the HP print and network diagnostics.  Everything appears to be OK.

The solution below was found on the sticky post at the top of this board "Fixes and Workarounds from HP"
I think the patch below only applies if you have the original printer software installed, I assume this issue was fixed in later versions of the printer software, Read the patch information carefully.

  • Airport not seeing base station or network

    Hi all,
I have almost three years of happy and almost trouble-free Airport Express use under my belt, but have encountered a problem I can't fix. Here is the situation:
    (1) My Airport does not see my base station, nor the wireless network that I have been using for a long time.
    (2) I have (after trying many other things) now done a factory default reset, and the problem still continues.
    (3) Interestingly, my wife's computer (a Vaio) CAN see the base station and the wireless network. (Because of the reset I did, it is now a network which has the factory default settings.)
    (4) Even more interestingly, my computer CAN see other wireless networks in the area, just not mine. So it seems that only my base station is invisible, and only from my computer!
    (5) When I try to log in to the base station manually through Airport Admin Utility, using the address I have always used and the default password, I get the message 'The Airport Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station. An error occurred while reading the base station.'
My setup (which has been working just fine until now) is:
    - cable connected to cable modem,
    - cable modem connected AE
    - two computers on the network: my Powerbook G4, and my wife's Vaio.
I don't consider myself stupid, but I am stumped! So grateful for any help,
    Andrew

OK, I seem to have solved the problem. In case anyone else is having a similar problem, here is what I did:
    - after browsing through the discussion forums here, I discovered that I could connect to my base station by plugging the ethernet cable from the base station to the computer. I did that, and my computer was finally able to see the base station.
    - that was the key. Once I could open the base station in Airport Admin Utility, I played around a little with the settings. The key was to change the 'channel' setting for the network to '1' from 'Automatic'. (I suspect it need not have been '1', but it was moving it off Automatic that seemed to matter.)
That solved the problem. I have no idea why the Automatic setting worked before and not now (something to do with the most recent software upgrade??), but at least it is solved now.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

  • Home Sharing Not Working With iPhone Over Network

    Hey,
I'm new to this whole support thing so I'll do my best to explain the issue!
On both iTunes and my iPhone 4s, I have turned on Home Sharing using the same Apple ID. Both are also connected to the same network which is my home wi-fi. I can't seem to connect no matter how hard I try. music won't stream from my pc to my phone and I can't use the app called Remote, an app that lets me control iTunes. I have even gone as far as to mess with my firewall where I allowed two new rules that had the ports Remote uses.
If anyone can spread some light on this shinanigan, I will be sooooo happy!
    Thanks in advance!

    ...And that didn't work either.

  • Airport: Not Configured after 10.4.7 update

I just bought a new macbook 2.0Ghz, proceeded through the first-time installation wizard setup my wifi settings, and everything worked fine.
At first boot in macosx i had my wifi working and i was able to browse and download things.
I installed the 10.4.7 macosx update, restarted, then lost my wifi connection.
    The signal indicator reads
    Airport: Not Configured
and in the network settings under 'Network Port Configuration' I see a greyed out 'AirPort' configuration. I can"t enable it. I can't add a new one either since the only choices are Bluetooth, Builtin firewire/ethernet, 6 to 4
I found a knowledge base article describing a similar problem:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303437
But the described workaround doesn't seem to work.
I also tried to reinstall the 10.4.7 update using the combo installer, the issues remain.
I ran also the permission repair utility at various stages in the process, it never detected any errors.
In the System Profiler under network/Airport section, i see:
    Airport Card Information:
    Type: AirPort Extreme [..]
    Locale: Worldwide
    Firwmare: 0.1.24
Current Wireless Network: AirPort is currently turned off
I know the card is there and working, since linux happily uses it when i boot in linux.
Has anyone any clue about what's happening ?
Is there a simple 'enable' button somewhere, or is that a known isse with 10.4.7 updater, how can i revert to 10.4.6 then ?
    Thanks a lot!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's actually a bit more weird:
When stepping through the first-time boot wizard, it asks to select the wifi essid from a list, the scan is ok and shows my network, and i type the WEP key in the box, click next. The 'Configuring your computer' blinks then the setup goes on and asks for my .Mac account and so on.
After the wizard completes i'm able to surf the web and connected BUT !
The signal meter is always empty and clicking on it states 'Airport: Not Configured'. When i open the network preferences it says under 'current status' that i'm using the builtin ethernet device ??!!
The IP and dhcp re-lease stuff work in the UI even if it's clearly not the builtin ethernet card that i'm using since the IP is from the wifi router, and there is no cable plugged in, and i can access the internet.
No mention of Airport port in the setup, so i can't configure it.
As soon as i restart the connection is gone, and the setup created by the first-time wizard is gone.
So the situation is now i have a 10.4.6 os with no airport..

  • List all DNS servers in an AD Forest

Is there a way (preferably powershell, of course!) to find all DNS servers in an AD forest?  Not domain controllers running DNS but ANY Windows servers running DNS.
Here is the situation...I have one root domain to which I am adding a new domain controller.  There are roughly 20 child domains which should all have their dns servers set to forward to my root domain for unresolved queries.  I need to change the forwarders on all DNS servers in the Forest (I've got that part figured out).  However, I know that not all Domain Controllers in all of the domains are DNS servers and vice versa (not all DNS servers in the domains are domain controllers).
So...anything that I can query to find all dns servers in the Forest (short of querying every server in the Forest for the existence of the DNS Server service?)
I've searched but can't seem to find anything in wmi.
    Thanks,
    Nate

That would just list all DCs within a domain (not even in the entire forest).
You can use DNSLint (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321045) or dnscmd (assuming you’re hosting your AD DNS Zones on Microsoft DNS Servers) to query for
    NS records.

    Hi Nate,
Yes, we can find list of DNS servers by using a command "nltest".
Here is the syntax nltest/dnsgetdc:<forest name>
    example: nltest/dnsgetdc:microsoft.com

  • My airport extreme cannot connect to the internet because it says it has no DNS servers. How can I fix this?

I just moved and am setting up a new apartment. Verizon put in internet service yesterday. I got a network going on my airport extreme but it could not connect to the internet because it says it has no DNS servers. help! What do I do now?

Ensure that the ethernet is connected to the WAN port (with the dotted circle).
You may have to reset and reconfigure your Airport Extreme.

  • How can I override the DNS Servers and Domain Name used by my Airport Time Capsule?

The defaults picked up from my ISP's DHCP are to use the ISP's DNS servers and ISP's domain. I do not want this.
With my prior router I set the DNS servers to Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and my domain to either "bannister.us" (which I own) or "bannister.home". I do not want simple names resolving to some ISP default. (Yes, I know exactly what this does.)
In the Apple AIrport Utility (version 6.3.2) the fields for DNS and Domain do not allow editing. (Why??)
Is there some way to override this?

Unfortunately not one that will work with the latest version TC.
The way around it is to use a different router.. It can be a very simple router.. I usually recommend units like the TP-Link WDR3600 as they take good third party firmware like gargoyle, openwrt, dd-wrt.. ie they have real controls and beyond that a proper Linux firmware with command line interface.
You can then change the TC over to static IP. It will not be the router.. but it will effectively become the local dhcp server.
I have adsl so I cannot reproduce your system.. I have a bridged modem.. a router.. AC66U.. and a TC.. but the TC is not in bridge.. it is in static IP mode.
    Let me demonstrate.
By setting a range on the main router from 1-199 (leave a space.. ) so set the TC to 192.168.2.201 and then you can set DNS and domain as you like. Set the dhcp range (leave a space) you could use 203-253.. then I use the main router as 254.
It is brilliant.. all computers behind the TC receive the IP from the TC with whatever IP and dns (and domain although I haven't changed it).. Effectively the TC works as its own dhcp device.. but is merely a secondary dhcp server to the main unit.
(This gives me netflix which is why I do it.. from well outside the US).
    It may be of use.
Why leave a space.. well it helps it to work.. I have not tested it but another person reported issues and found leaving a space .. ie last ip in the router.. 199, static ip 201.. first dhcp 203 (i used 205 to help me keep count!!). worked.. I have not tried to reproduce the problem.. so I reproduce the solution.. it might be like sheep jumping over the fence.. even if the fence was removed the sheep keep jumping over at the same place. Just say bahhh and do likewise.

  • How do you setup a server to use multiple DNS servers that are not connect to each other?

Is there a way to setup a server that connects to two different domains to use the proper DNS server for name resolution?
Let say there are two DCs: serverA.subdomaina.domain.com and serverB.subdoamainb.domain.com.  The domains are independent and not connected.  Now you need a common server that is connected to both and need to resolve names from both
    domains.
    Is this possible?
I have setup a server in a workgroup.  One NIC has the subdomaina.domain.com connection specific suffix and the other nic has the subdomainb.domain.com.  Each NIC has the DNS server listed for the domain it is connected to.
This configuration will resolve FQDNs of one domain but not the other.  This I believe is due to the fact the server only querys one DNS server and doesn't try the other DNS server.
Is there any way to make the server try another DNS server, if the first one doesn't have the entry?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
Here adding to the words of “Tim”, a forwarder is a DNS server on a network used to forward DNS queries for external DNS names to DNS servers outside of that network. You can also forward queries according to specific domain names using conditional forwarders.
A DNS server on a network is designated as a forwarder by having the other DNS servers in the network forward the queries they cannot resolve locally to that DNS server. You can refer information regarding forwarders and how to configure from beneath link.

  • Enterprise DNS servers are not responding when using Windows NLB with Direct Access 2012

    Hi
We have installed Direct Access 2012 as one server installation:
    - Two network cards. First one in DMZ and second one in internal network
    - Two consecutive IP addresses configured in DMZ because of Teredo
    - PKI because of Win7 Clients IPSec
    - Our corporate network is native IPv4 so we use DNS64/NAT64 and DA-server is configured as DNS
    - DA-servers are VMWare virtual machines
One server installation works fine and now we want to use Windows NLB as load balancing. NLB installation goes fine too,
but problem is DNS. If we still try to use DA-server as DNS there comes error message below
None of the enterprise DNS servers 2002:xxxx:xxxx:3333::1 used by DirectAccess clients for name resolution are responding. This might affect DirectAccess client connectivity to corporate resources.
When trying to configure DNS using Infrastructure access setup, DNS cannot be validated when using DA-servers DIP or cluster VIP. Only domain local DNS looks to be ok but those have no IPv6 addressess. So how DNS should be configured when using multicast
    NLB?
Tried to remove name suffix then adding again => Detect DNS server => DA-server IPv6 address found => validate => The specified DNS server is not responding...
Then tried to ping detected address => General failure
NLB clusters are configured as multicast and static ARPs are configured too. Both clusters can be connected from those subnets as they should be.
Any clues how to fix this?

  • Configuring airport DNS servers

I use an airport extreme base station which connects to the internet via an ethernet DSL connection. The airport TCP/IP settings are DHCP. The DNS servers, however, show 192.168.1.1 and not the DNS settings of the DSL. As a result the internet connection on my MacBook Pro is patchy at best with some pages that open and images not showing up. The only way I resolve this is by manually setting the DNS servers in my settings on the laptop. I have tried manually setting the DNS configuration on my Airport but for some reason this does not broadcast to all the computers in my house. The DNS settings that do appear on computers are the standard 192.168.1.1 and not the actual DNS. I cannot seem to figure out why the airport is doing this. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am also wondering if it is possible to turn DNS relay off on an Airport Extreme or Airport Express. I am using the latest firmware on both devices, 7.6.1 and they are the latest model.
Regarding your question about DNS servers; the IP address that shows in your device as a DNS server is the Airport Extreme LAN IP address. DNS queries will be sent to that device, and the DNS settings which it uses will be used to look domain names up.
So, for now, put the DNS server addresses you'd like to use on your Airport Extreme. This is done through the Airport Utility, under Internet > Internet Options.
Also, as a final note, try the ' namebench ' program to find the best DNS servers available. It helped me choose ipv4 dns servers and I'm noticing a difference in loading times.

  • My airport keeps saying no dns servers, how can i fix this problem

My Airport extreme will not stay connected to the internet.  It keeps saying no DNS servers, repairs its self and goes out again.  Anyone have a way to fix this more permanately?

How is your AE connected to the internet?  via a router or cable modem?

  • Multiple windows open in safari when click on web site.  Also can't change/edit DNS servers or any other changes in advance window of network tab

    macbook pro
    osx - mavericks
multiple windows open in safari when click on web site.  Also can't change/edit DNS servers or any other changes in advance window of network tab.
Basically every time i click on website other windows open and get redirected to other websites selling something (same as that mackeeper site which seems to open often)  Really ***** as in just a few minutes on the web I have many windows open and many are the same pages.  Can't make changes in the advanced tab of network as options are greyed out and the + & - symbols do nothing when clicked.  Hope there is an easy answer as surfing net is really sucking right now

I hope to get some more info on a similar situation.
I have a new Mac Pro, less than 2 months old. OSX 10.5 updated to 10.5.2. Quicktime updated too. When I use the Desktop and Screen Saver system pref, I can easily select and use one of the Apple supplied desktop pictures as a desktop background.
But I wish to use a Photo from an iPhoto (iLife 08) folder / album as the desktop background. I can find all the albums, I can see all the icons for the pictures, I can select an iconed pciture and it appears in the top left of the preference pane (showing the effect of "fit to window" or "stretch to fit", etc). But all I get is a pale blue screen (which might be my default desktop colour). I don't get any of my iPhoto album pics to appear as a dektop background.
There is one minor note on this, I don't keep the pictures in my iPhoto Library, I just reference them, and the originals are on a different internal disk.
I've tried the suggestions above, trashing finder and desktop plists, killall Finder, etc. restart. Nothing gets it working again. It did work originally, for most of the time I've had the Mac Pro, then I changed the dektop to an Apple supplied picture of Earth.
This affects both an Admin, and a standard user. The photos (and enclosing folders) are read / writable by the admin user, and readable by the Standard user. Both users can easily access the photos in their iPhoto. They open the original files on the second internal drive, and performing a right click - Show File shows the original file as expected. I've even emptied the iPhoto library completely and rebuilt it, just in case there was an issue here.
Any ideas ? or anyone else seen this ? I don't really want to start reformatting disks and reinstalling the OS, but any suggestions short of this are extremely welcome.
