Airport not listed in Airport Admin Utility

My Airport Extreme not listed in Airport Admin Utility, but sometime it re-appear after reboot. I have no problem connecting to the Internet both wired and wireless even through Airport Admin Utility does not show a Airport Extreme. I can also access the Airport Extreme if I type in the IP address and the password. The problem is that when it does not show up, I cannot print via Bonjour. Did anybody have similar problem and way to resolve it? I have a iMac (wired) and a Powerbook (wireless) connect to the Airport Extreme. Thanks

  • Airport express not listed in Airport admin utility, no music

I had my stereo connected to my airport express to stream music from my imac.
Its been working great for a year. About 2 days ago I did some updates and now
the light is blinking orange and no music.
I have tried to reset the AE with a paperclip but its still not showing in the Airport Admin Utility NOR the Airport Setup Assistant.
Not sure where to go from here....
    thanks Laura Drew

When I open the Airport Admin Utility, even when the AX is connected via ethernet, it is still not listed there. I hit rescan and it never surfaces. If I hit OTHER I get a screen that says 10.0.0.1 (if I remember correctly) then I put in the pw public.
10.0.0.1 would be the correct default LAN IP address for the AirPort Base Stations.
The screen says its rebooting the AX. The light turns green for apx. 2 seconds then turns back to blinking orange.
If I unplug it from the ethernet, I am able to see it under the airport icon.
And this would be normal when the AX is not connected to a network. I have assumed that your are using a Cable/DSL modem for your Internet connectivity and that you had not replaced the Ethernet cable between the modem and the AX just yet. So a blinking amber (orange) status light would be correct.
I choose it, plug the AX into the stereo but the light never turns green, and itunes says it can't find the AX.
Connecting the AX to a stereo would not change the status light. Again, remember a green status light indicates a valid network connection.
Maybe I will need to do it thru my router?? could my airport card have gone bad? but it seems I can connect to other networks (my neighbors)??
You can certainly set up the AX while it's connected to a router. I agree with you that it shouldn't be a problem with your AirPort Card.
So now I have to admit, I'm a bit baffled about your current network configuration. My confusion is, whether or not, you are using an Internet router, in addition to the AX.
Would you please confirm for me which of the following two network configurations, 1 or 2, that you currently desire...
    1) DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] Internet router [LAN port] > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX [Audio port] > (audio cable) > stereo, or
    2) DSL/Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] AX [Audio port] > (audio cable) > stereo
    ...or something else?
In other words, are you using the AX for both your Internet connectivity/iTunes streaming or another router for the Internet and just using the AX for streaming iTunes?

  • Airport Express Not Showing up in Admin Utility

Have an Intel iMac, and tried to set up AX yesterday. Using SBC DSL internet connection (2-wire system). Plugged phone line into 2-wire router, ethernet cable between router and AX, powered both up. Router shows 3 green lights, indicating that everything is "good." Likewise, AX shows up with a green light. On the iMac, I never got the generic "Airport Express Network" or anything, but did have 2WIRE381 recognized (presumably as my AX network). I am able to connect to the 2WIRE381, and show a strong signal. However, I cannot connect to the internet, nor can I configure AX via the the Admin Utility (nothing shows up). I've tried both soft and hard resets, powering off the router, restarting the iMac, ... nothing seems to work. AX also not visible in iTunes (since no internet connection).
Any thoughts? One thought that I had ... is it possible that I am picking up a neighbor's signal, and that is why I can't configure it? My AX is about 30-40 feet away (single level house, 1200 sqft.) with probably 3-4 walls between AX and iMac.
    Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated.

    Answering my own post ...
I first directly connected the AX to the iMac using the ethernet cable, and was able to configure the AX (not sure that I actually had to do this, as my issue was probably due to poor signal strength - as described later). I then moved the AX back to the living room, and was able to connect again, but soon it was dropped. Determined that the signal was weak. I played with positioning the AX to optimize signal, and now am able to get OK signal (only about 1/3 strength, based on number of bars in "fan" shaped icon in menu bar). Was able to stream iTunes to stereo as well, which is great. Also determined that the 2WIRE system that Airport was trying to set up WAS my neighbor (and not my gateway/router). If you don't see "Apple XXXXX" base station and network listed when you are in Airport Admin Utility or Internet Connect (which I didn't, but since I was using 2WIRE gateway/router, assumed that it was my AX when the 2WIRE appeared in the Airport network connection option), then the AX is not properly set up (weak signal or other problem).
So, with the AX in the living room (front of the house), and the iMac in the sun room (back of the house), I am able to get OK, but not great signal from AX. So far, seems to be sufficient to connect to internet and stream iTunes. I may see if I can reposition the AX on the other side of the living room wall, but that will then require running a long cable to connect to the stereo.
Bottom line: 50ft. range of AX may be reduced when used in old (1920's era) houses (thick, plaster walls). Actual distance between AX and iMac is probably 30-40 feet, though they are separated by at least 3-4 walls. If repositioning to other side of wall doesn't do the trick, I may need to step up to Extreme.
I hope this helps others that might have similar problems.

  • Airport Express not Appearing in iTunes/Airport Admin Utility

After upgrading to iTunes 7, Airtunes did not work, so I followed the tips on the forum discussions, on MacOSXHints.com (resetting the IPv6 preference) and so on.
However, now iTunes will not recognise the base station at all. I think this is connected to the fact that the base station will also not appear on the Airport Admin Utility list. BUT... I am able to access the Airport Express by entering its IP address and password via the "Other" button. This has allowed me to check the AEx configuration settings, reset the hardware, re-upload the firmware, and even re-configure the AEx from scratch.
I am able to use the Internet through the AEx, and the network appears in my airport menu bar list, so I can select it and other wireless networks in range... It seems that iTunes and Airport Admin Utility just cannot see it. I have tried every combination of 'soft reset', 'hard reset' of the Aex, trashing of various airport admin utility and itunes preferences, and restarting software and the whole computer but this problem still persists.
Any ideas?? iTunes 7 is great, but I want my Airtunes back!!
    Thanks in advance - Danny

you may be suffering from wireless interference.
download iStumbler and note the channels other networks in the vicinity are broadcasting on, then change the channel your network is using as far away as possible from those.

  • AirPort Extreme Base Station is not Available in AirPort Admin Utility

I don't see my APEX Base Station in the list in AirPort Admin Util. I can configure by opening by IP. I have no software firewall. I have plugged in directly to base station, and have reflash with 5.7 firmware. I am using 4.2 of AirPort Admin. I've Tried everything I can find in forums. Anyone else have issues?
    I'm using Mac OS 10.4.4

I have tried resetting it. It doesn't always work. Sometimes the base station is listed, and sometimes it is not. The base station is functioning though. I can access the newtork, It just doesn't show up in Admin Util.
I also have an AP Epress connected to AP Extreme via WDS. From the wired side, they either both show up or both do not, which is expected. When they don't show up on the Admin list, the Express also doesn't show up in iTunes from the wired side. Wireless clients don't seem to exhibit this problem.

  • My Airport Base Station does not appear in the Airport Admin Utility

I cannot see my airport extreme base station in the Airport Admin Utility nor in Airport Setup Assistant via Airport. It worked yesterday but when I was trying to set up a network something must have changed but I don't know what it is. (The setup didn't work so I am only using one base station right now.) The only way I can configure/reconfigure the base station is by physically connecting via an ethernet cable. Then no problem. I have two computers and neither can access the base station with Airport Admin Utility via Airport. I have installed the latest Airport Update but nothing has changed. What happened?

You should be able to use the second Airport Extreme
Base Station as a wireless print server. What I
    suggest you do is:
    1. run the Airport Admin Utility and clean up
settings on your existing Base Station:
    - under the Airport tab, make sure you have not
selected to "create a closed network"
    - under the Access Control tab, clear out all
    settings
    - under the WDS tab, clear out all settings
    - under the Network tab, make sure the box is checked
to "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP
    address using DHCP and NAT".
    - update settings to the Base Station if you changed
    anything.
    2. do a hard reset of your second base station per:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451
    3. for now, put both base stations and the Mac in the
same room. Run the Airport Setup Assistant, and use
its guidance to configure the second base station as
a new base station that "extends" the wireless
network of your main base station.
    That should do it.
Thanks very much. The printer works great from both computers via my second airport base station. And I can see both my base stations in the Airport Admin Utility.

  • Airport Express Base Station doesn't appear in AirPort Admin Utility list

    Hi,
After applying the "Security Update 2007-003" I had the following problem and can't solve it:
Now I can't find anymore my Airport Express base station under the list of Base stations in Airport Admin Utility and am also having problems while printing wireless, if the printer goes to sleep mode he doesn't wake up automatically anymore to do the job, every time I have to close it and open it again.
I can't find a solution for this problem, please HELP!
    Thanks,
    Macuser

"it was downloaded by the software update"
No problem then. Apparently there WAS such an update, but I missed it and it's been deleted from the list of available downloads, as you can clearly see.
There is now a new "Security Update 2007-004" for Tiger, and I think it's safe to assume that this will help correct your problems.
If your problems still exist afterwards, you will want to reset the AirPort Express unit to factory settings and erase all current configuration profiles. Do that by holding in the reset button with a straightened paper clip while plugging the unit into a convenient electrical receptacle. Open the utility "AirPort Setup Assistant" and choose to "Set up a new AirPort Base Station" and proceed. After successful completion, unplug and relocate the AirPort Express to its usual location.

  • Airport Extreme working but not visible in Airport Admin Utility

Recently my Airport Extreme (spaceship version) stopped showing up in the Airport Admin Utility v4.2.
The internet works fine computers can connect wirelessly or wired to the Airport Extreme and use the internet. AppleTV isn't visible in iTunes anymore either so it can't sync but can connect to the internet to see previews, YouTube, etc.
I have tried removing Airport Admin Utility and reinstalling, checked permissions, all okay.
    Any ideas?

Ah - more clues always help!
In that case, I tend to agree with your assessment. For some reason, the Bonjour automatic network device discovery process seems not to be working properly on this Mac. I'm not going to be of much help in troubleshooting that problem.
The only other issue I have encountered is with the installation of excessively robust firewall software on the Mac blocking Bonjour's ability to discover network devices. VPN client software is sometimes also a culprit, for the same reasons. You have already indicated this could not possibly be the cause of your problems.

  • Airport Admin Utility Not Picking up my Network

I am connected to my Airport, and using the Internet. However, neither Airport Admin Utility or Airport Setup Assistant picks up my network (when I scan for it).
Can someone provide me with some step-by-step instructions on how to solve this?
    Thanks,

    Hi,
it seems the original poster's OS is: 10.3.9. I think I have the same issue.
-> with my 1.67GHz powerbook G4, 10.3.9 - after upgrading the internal airport software to 4.2, I can no longer connect to old access points. This Apple help page worked with 4.1 - holding down the Control key while selecting the network. Now with 4.2 it does not work anymore.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107938
Daamn, why did I accept the upgrade?! now I cannot connect to any WLAN in the office anymore! How to downgrade the powerbook airport drivers to 4.1?
Guys, please check your Apps->Utilities->Console output. Are you getting this too?:
    "WirelessJoin unexpected status: 4".
I'm also haveing the same problem with my iBook G4. Is there anyway to downgrade it? Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

  • Computer can not read airport admin utility.

I am on the web, but I need to change my password so my PC can also connect via the airport. Although, when I try to change the settings of the airport I am either told the airport is not connected, or it will tell me that there was an error in communicating with the airport. What gives?

I did read your posts - but I'm not certain you followed the instructions (from the beginning) provided in link to the article "Starting from scratch". The advice provided in the link "Starting from scratch" begins by having you do a hard reset of the Airport Base Station before trying to run the Airport Admin Utility again. Sometimes doing this will finally allow the Airport Admin Utility to see and access the configuration of a Base Station when all other attempts to get the Airport Admin Utility to access the Base Station have failed. Any yes - I have indeed seen your problem posted many times over the past few years within the thousands of postings I have read in the Airport discussion forums on this web site.
If you did follow the instructions to hard reset the Base Station, and the Airport Admin Utility still fails to be able to access the Base Station then my apologies, and I'll have to admit I won't be of any help.

  • AirTunes not working, no Music tab in Airport Admin Utility

Suddenly today after a year and a half of use, I noticed that I had no remote speakers in iTunes. A trip to the Airport Admin Utility revealed no music tab. After resetting the AE (hard, and factory default), I get the same result, no Music tab in Admin Utility and no AirTunes remote speakers in iTunes. USB printer and WDS work fine. Anyone else experience this?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have the latest version of Admin Utility (4.2) and the latest version of AE firmware (6.3). It has been working forever, I listen to streaming audio through AE every day. It is very odd that the music tab is missing from the admin utility when I try to configure the Airport Express. Like I said I tried every reset option and reloaded the firmware but I don't know what else to try. I would hate to give in to the fact that it's a hardware issue...

  • Reissue:  Connection Timed Out and Airport Admin Utility Issues

I put this post last November, but no one seemed to have a solution to it, so I thought I would try again...
Our lab has and Airport Extreme (802.11g). Intermittently (once a week to a couple of times a day) our airport extreme will stop allowing new connections. Here's what appears to happen. The airport still appears in the the list of networks in the airport icon in the menu bar (ie it still broadcasts SSID), but when I try to connect it whirls for a while and then says connection timed out. If I go to the Airport Admin Utility the base station doesn't appear there even though all of the rest of the ones on our network do (I should at this point, mention that we have both ethernet and WiFi layers on our network--the base station operates as an access point in bridge mode). The only solution is to power cycle the base station. A couple of extra tidbits.
    * Base station firmware is current at version 5.7.
    * We never have more than about 8 users connected to the base station.
    * This inability to connect is independent of what computer is trying to connect and even occurs with iPod touches.
    * This problem has occurred for a couple of years (multiple firmware versions).
    * I also have similar problems on a network at home that has the new Airport express/extreme N arrangement on a cable internet connection.
    * Sometimes this seems to fix itself after 30 minutes or so of just ignoring it. Other times it does not.
    * The restoration of the ability of the airport to accept connections after the power cycle is always immediate.
    * We only have 6-10 connections, less than the max supported.
    * The Airport usually continues to work for those computers that are connected to it before it stops allowing connections.
    So couple of questions:
    1) Do other people see this problem?
    2) Is this some problem with the WAN network connection impairing the ability of the base station to establish WiFi connection that eventually resets itself after something times our or resets?
    3) Any suggestions as to what to do about it?

Two reasons I don't think that this is likely the issue. Both are based on my assumptions about how noise would affect the working of a WAP. If these assumptions are erroneous, please let me know.
The first is that I have tried both automatic channel selection and manual channel assignment based on an unused channel that was several channels away from other WAPs. Kind of circumstantial since other devices can emit noise in the same region of the spectrum (our phones are 5.8GHz and the microwave is no where near the base station.
The second though, is that I can stand literally a foot away from the base station with my notebook or iPod touch and still have the same problem. It would seem the the noise would have to be enormous to interfere with a device that close the the base station. Also, why would the other connected devices continue to work?
In the interest of providing a complete picture, I would say I have thought quite a lot about whether noise is a problem. This base station is installed in a lab, with lots of electrical equipment whirring away and to make matters worse, the base station itself needed to be installed right next to (Within inches) a circuit breaker box. I winced when I did this.
Interestingly, the thing normally does work and the signal strength & signal to noise (reported by airport utility) and transfer rates are quite good when you can connect.
    Thanks,
    Michael

  • Music Tab Disappears from Airport Admin Utility

I have searched these forums and the internet for a long time for a solution to this problem only to find that this is a common problem for a lot of people. Basically, all of the sudden iTunes didn't list my wireless speakers as a possible output for my music. Thinking a setting had been changed or something I logged into the Airport Admin Utility only to find that the "Music" tab was completely removed. I restarted the AE multiple times, performed multiple firmware upgrades/downgrades, and reset the entire device to no avail.
    {Post edited by Host.}
    Anyways, if you have a solution, please post it here (I know there are other postings but none recent). {Post edited by Host}

Perhaps when you switch it to 5 GHz the signal loss is so great that your Mac Pro can no longer receive the signal.
5 GHz signals do not move through physical objects as well as 2.4 GHz signals.

  • Airport Admin Utility is Blind

My airport admin utility can't see my airport extreme base station, but the base station is emitting a signal, and i'm getting internet from a generic network it's created (i.e., I can see it in my list of networks available). What gives?

Make sure that you are connected to your AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBS) wireless network before launching the AirPort Admin Utility. If you are still not able to access "see" it in the utility, connect your computer directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the LAN port of the AEBS, and then, try again.

  • Airport Admin Utillity 4.2 problems

I have a small wired and wireless network: iMac G5, iMac G3, and iBook G3. The iBook uses a wireless connection through Airport Extreme. I also have a couple of AIrport Expresses for sending iTunes music to stereos. Everything has been working fine except I just noticed that I did not have stereo speaker option in iTunes when using iMac G5 running 10.4.6. I opened Airport Admin Utility 4.2 and could not see of the devices.
The strange thing is that the iBook still has a connection and the iMac G3 can see all three devices just fine. The only computer having a problem is the iMac G5. If I manually select "Other" and enter IP address and password for Airport Extreme, it will open configuration file where I can see settings and even restart it. But, when I close everything, I still cannot see it on the device list.
Any ideas or suggestioons as to the problem?

Found problem. My Linksys 1-port cable router died recently and I replaced it with a 4 port model. I plugged-in my computers, printer into the old 8 port switch that I had used previously, except for the cable from Airport Extreme. For some reason I plugged it into one of the 4 ports of the cable router.
Not sure why there is a difference, but once I put it back into the switch, the iMac G5 and Airport Admin Utililty could see Airport and Expresses just fine. Hope thi helps others.
