Airport not seeing base station or network

Hi all,
I have almost three years of happy and almost trouble-free Airport Express use under my belt, but have encountered a problem I can't fix. Here is the situation:
(1) My Airport does not see my base station, nor the wireless network that I have been using for a long time.
(2) I have (after trying many other things) now done a factory default reset, and the problem still continues.
(3) Interestingly, my wife's computer (a Vaio) CAN see the base station and the wireless network. (Because of the reset I did, it is now a network which has the factory default settings.)
(4) Even more interestingly, my computer CAN see other wireless networks in the area, just not mine. So it seems that only my base station is invisible, and only from my computer!
(5) When I try to log in to the base station manually through Airport Admin Utility, using the address I have always used and the default password, I get the message 'The Airport Admin Utility was unable to read the configuration of the selected base station. An error occurred while reading the base station.'
My setup (which has been working just fine until now) is:
- cable connected to cable modem,
- cable modem connected AE
- two computers on the network: my Powerbook G4, and my wife's Vaio.
I don't consider myself stupid, but I am stumped! So grateful for any help,
Andrew

OK, I seem to have solved the problem. In case anyone else is having a similar problem, here is what I did:
- after browsing through the discussion forums here, I discovered that I could connect to my base station by plugging the ethernet cable from the base station to the computer. I did that, and my computer was finally able to see the base station.
- that was the key. Once I could open the base station in Airport Admin Utility, I played around a little with the settings. The key was to change the 'channel' setting for the network to '1' from 'Automatic'. (I suspect it need not have been '1', but it was moving it off Automatic that seemed to matter.)
That solved the problem. I have no idea why the Automatic setting worked before and not now (something to do with the most recent software upgrade??), but at least it is solved now.
Cheers,
Andrew

  • Airport Utility does not see Base Station but I'm still online

I have an original airport base station and just downloaded Airport Utility 5.5.1
The base station is working because I'm online with it posting this thread.
But Airport Utility 5.5.1 does NOT see it...
The strange thing is that I have one of the early dome Airport Extremes here as well. That one IS recognized but the Airport Utility.
Anyone have any suggestions as to why the original Airport is not showing up in the utility even when I know it's obviously being seen by my card and connecting to the web?
    Thanks
    g

Did you power cycle your network as follows?
Power everything on the network down, order is not important
Wait a few minutes, then start the modem first and let it run a few moments by itself.
Then start the next device connected to the modem and let it run a few moments.
Then start each device the same way until everything is up on the network.

  • Airport Utility does not see base station

    Hello,
I just got an Airport Extreme. I am able to connect to it from mac and pc running vista but I am not able to see the base station from the airport utility on the windows platform. I can see it from the mac. Any ideas why - am I missing something on the windows platform.
    Thanks

Thanks for your answers. I found this answer in a different thread. Once I unchecked CheckPoint VPN software - the base stations now show up in Airport Utility.

    I had same frustrating problem.
I was able finally to restore AirTunes.
    In Local Area Connection Status.Properties
In the "uses the following Items" list,
    Item "Check Point SecuRemote" appears.
This is the VPN CLient that was installed to let me log in to my office network from home.
Uncheck SecuRemote, OK; iTunes Speakers button shows.
Check SecuRemote, OK; iTunes Speakers button disappears.
This looks like a bug in Checkpoint Software.
In your case, something else may be interferring.

  • Not seeing base station in Airport Admin Utility

    Let me ask another question:
I have two Airport base stations 10 feet apart. One (A) is connected to the internet via the WAN port (all three status lights are on steady). The other (B) is set up as a relay base station (left and middle lights in operation).
From a computer with an Airport card I only see the relay unit (B) (I have normally seen both in the past). From the in-house wired network (cabled to the first Airport ) I only see the first base station (A).
Is this a sign that the first base station (A) is not transmitting a signal - don't see it with the computer with the airport card? Other than seeing a Airport station with a computer with a card, how do you know if it is transmitting? Do Airports fail (mine are a year old)?
    Tim

This sounds a little like what I have experienced with my setup. Hope I can be of some help.
Because you indicated that things have worked in the past, lets assume for now that the network is configured correctly.
First, I would use the Admin utility to reset both base stations. This will take a few minutes and I would recommend giving everything about 10 minutes before you move on.
Now, unless the wired computer has an AirPort card installed, it will only find the ABS that it is wired to. If this is the case, you will need to use the wireless computer to check whether both stations are now available.
With any luck, both stations will now appear and you'll be up and running.
If not, Unplug both base stations for a few minutes and let them restart that way and check it again.
    Good luck.

  • Airport Management Utility on new MacBook Pro does not see base station

I have an old "flying saucer" Airport base station. I
recently started using a new MacBook Pro. Airport
connection is fine, Airport Admin Utility works normally,
but Airport Client Monitor 1.0 shows blank graphs and
Airport Management Utility 1.0 does not "see" the
base station. I don't know if the problem is the
change to Tiger, to Intel, or to AE card. MacStumbler
    and friends also are "blind".

Try rebooting the airport, then going to airport utilities and go thru the set up proceedure following the prompts.  Also go to system prefernces in location select automatic.

  • Airport Extreme utility does not see base station.

The utility doesn't see the base station, yet I can connect and surf the internet. I have noticed that the light is flashing yellow, but I don't know how to stop it or turn it to green. I am using XP.

If you have wireless turned on and you do not have security enabled, it will flash amber. You can over ride the flashing amber in the utility, or if you are hardwired, just turn the wireless function off.

  • LAN not seeing Base Station

My snow base station can't be seen even with a LAN connection between my iMac and the Base Station. What gives? Yes, I have done a hard restart. When in Admin utility I get a message that either says "Connection failed," or that there is no Base Station available. Is my snow base station a gonn'r or something?

Yes, H.B., that is correct. A week ago, my two laptops suddenly did not pick up the Airport; the message, "You are not connected to the Internet" would appear in my Safari window. Then, my iMac, which is connected to the Internet through the LAN/WAN connections would not connect either. Unplugging the cable modem and Airport Base Station for a time (and then restarting it all), would fix the problem for about ten minutes. But then, the Airport signal would disappear again. We have no new phones or other devices that would interfere. And, if it were a neighbor's device, I doubt, the restarts would give me ten minutes of uninterrupted signal anyway. So, I will try the process you posted. Anyone else got ideas, let me know. Again, maybe this base station is broke down. I will post a follow-up when I try a couple new things. Thanks.

  • Airport utility does not support base station? Help!

I cannot get base station light to turn green. Blinking amber. I upgraded to a new Verizon modem and since then the base station does not work. What can I do?

Make sure the new Verizon Modem is not also a WiFi Router, if it is then that may be your issue.  If it is indeed just a Modem then your Ethernet Connection should work and your base station should be working.  You said "Airport Utility does not support base station".  Don't know what you meant by that.  Do you have an Airport Extreme, Airport Express or a Airport TC as a Base Station?  If yes, you should be able to set up your Network via Airport Utility.  If the Verizon Modem is only a Modem then unplug the power from your Airport Base Station, then unplug the Power from your Verizon Modem for at least 1-minute.  Plug the Modem back in and give it a moment or so, then make sure you do have an Ethernet cable going from your Verizon provided Modem to your WAN port on your Airport Base Station.  Now power up your Airport Base Station and go to your Airport Utility.  Find the Base Station and click on Edit...  Make sure your Network Name is correct, your Password is Correct, your Security method is correct (example:  WPA2 Personal).  If all correct see if your blinking Amber light is now Solid Green.

  • How do I make my new Airport Extreme a base station?

I have been using an Airport Extreme (5th generation) as my base station router for a few years. I set the main network for my and my wife's use and created a guest network for when my sons visited and needed to use the wi-fi connection. I used passwords for both networks. Today I purchased a new 802.11 ac Airport Extreme. I unplugged the 5h gen. Extreme and plugged in the new Extreme. After a short hunt, my new 27" (late 2013) iMac found the new Extreme and had me set up a name and a password for it using Airport Utility. I was expecting it to ask if I wanted to set up a guest network, but it did not. I was expecting it to ask since I believe that is what happened when I installed my 5th gen Extreme a few years ago. For the 5th gen Extreme, I had to enter a password to protect settings on the Extreme, a WPA2 password for my main network and another password for my guest network. It took about 10 minutes to set up. For this new Airport Extreme I entered just one password. It took about 2 to 3 minutes for the entire setup. When I checked the menu in the Airport Utility under "Base Station", all lines are grayed out. Under the File Menu in Airport Utility, "Configure Other" is available, but "Import Configuration file" and "Export Configuration file" are also grayed out. I checked Network Settings in System Preferences and I see my new network name in the Wi-Fi menu and under the "Advanced..." button, I see the old and new Networks listed in the "Preferred networks" box.
So, how do I get the new Airport Extreme to act as the Base station and be able to enter a guest network? Does it require me to delete the old Network name from the Advanced... button page in System Preferences > Network Settings? Will I just have to start all over with the new Extreme to make it a base station?

    Hello Leo,
I'm not at home so can't confirm but I can only assume that maybe some of the "old" settings in airport utility have changed, and simplified.  Hence why you probably only need one password.
When I bought the new "tower" like AirPort Extreme, I just plugged it into the Ethernet, powered it on with the previous generation Extreme in place and in Airport Utility it just asked me if I wanted to copy the settings to the newer device, which included a few "port forwarding" settings.  All done in this sequence.  I didn't have guest network set up but you can still set up guest network under wireless in Airport Utility, hope this helps!

  • IMac could not  'find'  base station. (Previously working)

Today I found that my iMac (20" Core 2 Duo with built in Airport card) was not talking to my Airport Extreme 802.11n base station.
The base station had a green light and was talking OK with another machine upstairs so there was nothing wrong with the internet connection (or the cable broadband router) or the base station.
I re-booted the iMac but still no connection. I scanned for base stations from the Airport utility. Nothing found.
So I did the factory reset on the base station and scanned again and this time it 'found' it. Set up the network (passwords etc) from scratch and everthing working OK.
Except now it would not talk to the PC upstairs. Checked on the Airport utility to see what channel was in use and found it had defaulted to 13. No problem. I changed it to 6 (our normal channel) and waited for the base station to reboot. Base station re-booted fine (green light) and PC upstairs connected. Good.
BUT. Now could not find base station from iMac again!
So I went through the whole process again, once to make sure the fault was repeatable and once again to set a new channel to 10.
Now everything works great again. Everything talking to everything else (including iMac and upstairs PC) but using channel 10 now instead of the old channel 6.
I dont know why this fault should suddenly happen. Why a channel that has had no problems since install (months ago) should suddenly not work.
The only thing different was the big Software Security download from Apple yesterday morning. But the network was OK for hours after that and there was no Airport software upgrades today (that I know of) and the base station is still on version 7.1.1.
(One other strange thing I noticed. When running iStumbler after all this, I could see my network and the usual three other nearby networks near my home BUT they were all also now on channel 10 or 11 whereas they had all been on channel 6 previously just like mine had been. Weird.)
I am in the UK in case things are different where you are.
I would be interested to know if this has happened to you at some time especially in the last day or two.
    Thanks

I don't know. I just reset the airport base station
(before your post) and erased all network stuff to
    start from scratch.
    Should it use PPoE?
That depends on your ISP. It would be in your ISP documentation.
    Should AppleTalk be active?
TCP/IP and AFP (the replacement for AppleTalk) are required.

  • Connect ibook G3 to Express base station extended network?

    Hi,
Can someone tell me if what I would like to do is possible: I've just intalled an AirPort Extreme as my base station in my WDS. My other Macs are connecting to the new network I created - let's call it Foo - just fine. My iBook G3 cannot connect to Foo (because it's not compatible, right? I just keep getting 'There was an error connecting to Foo'). So I've set up an AirPort Express to 'extend the network' and share the internet connection of Foo (because I also want it to be able to play iTunes in the kitchen, where it is). I've called this new base station 'Pi'. So shouldn't I be able to setup my iBook G3 to get the internet connection from Pi? It's not readily available in the AirPort dropdown menu. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Bree
    iBook   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

No, the base stations have different names, but the network name must be the same when setting up each of the base stations. The problem is probably that you need to set EACH of the base stations to also use the 802.11b standard to include the slower G3 AirPort card.
    edit-
When the iBook tries to connect in its AirPort icon, use the "Other..." and enter the encryption method first, then the network name (not the base station's name), and finally the password. It should connect. You really should change it so that your base stations use WPA2. As long as the Macs have the same updated Tiger OS, they are capable of personal WPA2.

  • 802.11n and Airport Express iTunes Base station Help me ?

I'll try to keep this simple :
In my Office I have a 24" iMac Intel and the
802.11n resides also in my Office
About 40ft away is my Den which resides:
My MacBook Pro 17" Intel and a Airport Express iTunes
    Base Station
Going Back to the 802.11n I have a 2.0 USB AC Powered
Hub connected to the USB port on the back of the 802.11n
of which  said is OK to do
Connected to the USB on the back of the 802.11n:
is a Epson R200 USB InkJet Printer and also on that
Hub is a Lacie Porche 500gb External USB Hard Drive
Again  says is Ok to do
The problem I'm having is that the Cable Modem is
in my Office and is connected via Ethernet to the 802.11n
and I can get a strong connection to the internet
on my iMac 24" Intel in my Office but the MBP 17"
in my Den is having issues getting onto the Internet
now about a week ago I spent 8hrs on the phone W/Apple
about such issues so we erased all the information in
the Disk Utility and started over with the information
in the 802.11n and the iTunes Base Station Express
this has helped until the recent FirmWare Update that
Apple Released a few days ago,
I've tried to actual bring my MBP 17" into the Office
and it gets a better Internet signal than in the Den,
but this wasn't the way it was before the FirmWare Update
Any Suggestions on what I can do to fix this situation
As all worked well with the Express iTunes in the Den
and the 802.11n in the Office and the Cable Modem has
always been in the Office ?
P.S> One problem I forgot to mention is I keep dropping
The Macbook Pro 17" and a Lacie 400gb Hard Drive which is
connected directly to the MBP 17" USB Port which keeps
dropping from my iMac 24" networking it will be working
fine and then I get a message stating that either or both
the MBP 17" and the Lacie Disk (400gb) is Disconnecting
from iMac 24" and then the same will happen on the
MBP 17" with the iMac 24" and any connected drives I'm
sharing from the iMac 24" ?
I'm having a connection problem and I can't get to the
bottom of it and I need some help please

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
