Airport Only Sees One Network

This might sound like a bizarre problem, but here goes. When I first start my computer and scan for networks, I can see all of the available networks in range. When I connect to one and look again, all of the networks have now disappeared. The card works and I can get internet, but if I want to switch networks, I have to restart. Has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it?

Should I give any more information that might help, if someone were to tell me what they need I could grab that? or is there no one else that is having this problem?

  • XServe G5 - hardware indicates both ethernet ports are working; software only sees one

    XServe G5
System Profiler only sees one ethernet port: en0
Server Monitor (Tiger) also only sees en0
But when cables are plugged into both ports, both green link lights come on, and both show blue activity lights.
Whichever switch (Cisco catalyst 2960) is connected to en0 (lower port) works fine; whichever is connected to the second (upper) port does not actually deliver any data to computers attached to that switch, they cannot see the server even though the switch indicates that something (the server) is attached to it.
I know the bottom ethernet port has to be connected first, and then the upper, and I did that. I have restarted the server.
Only the bottom port has ever been used on this server and I'm trying to use the upper one for the first time, do I need to configure it somehow? The manual is extremely minimal and doesn't mention anything about needing to manually configure it.
    Thanks.

To start with the basics did you go into System Preferences > Networking and activate and assign a static IP to the second interface or did you do some other set-up?

  • The airport only finds other networks than the home network I have used before.  Doesn' help to try to manually add/find this network, it simply doesn't come up.  All other networks in the neighborhood are found though. Doesn't help to reboot either

The airport only finds other networks.  Not the home network which I have used before.
It doesn't help to search for new networks, try to manually search or add the network.  Doesn't
help to turn off/on the airport or even the mac.  Doesn't help to reboot the home network - which is
found and connected on the iPhone and iPad. (and network speed is good enough for many devices).
The network just doesn't come up on the list of available networks.
No chance to update software, since got no internet.

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

  • Restrict airport to only join one network

After an "upgrade" recently, when I reboot my iMac G5, it fails to find its usual airport base station, and will then proceed to try to join my neighbor's unprotected wireless access point. I have to manually click no after it offers to join, wait a couple of seconds, and then manually choose the correct option from a list of at least three.
Neither my older iMac nor my laptop experience this problem, and this behavior is new since a recent upgrade.
Is there some configuration file I can edit to force this computer to only join one wireless network, and to keep trying until it gets it right?

This worked, although it has nothing to do with unix, but I thought as long as I posted this question, I should post how I fixed it:
    [10/6] [Updated] Our Mac OS X 10.4.8 AirPort/Internet Re-Connect Problem Fixed
After we tested the latest Mac OS X update, v10.4.8, on our 2.33GHz 24" iMac Core 2 Duo, we added another user account for the long-term tester. But after a restart or cold start, the iMac would reconnect to our AirPort network but it would get assigned an internal IP address rather than one from our router so it would not connect to the internet.
This problem could be temporarily solved by using the AirPort menu icon to turn off and then turn back on the AirPort card. This was frustrating because the original user account on our iMac continued to connect automatically to the network and internet after a restart or sleep as did all of our other Macs upgraded to 10.4.8.
We tried everything listed by Apple in its technical support articles (e.g. Article Number 304482) and provided on other Web sites, including deleting the preferred network in the System Preferences Network pane and re-adding it. We even tried deleting every AirPort-related preference ".plist" file including the "Networkinterface.plist" as recommended on another Web site yesterday. Nothing worked.
Then we tried a variation on Apple's suggestion and it worked. Here are the steps:
Open System Preferences, select the Network pane and select AirPort in the "Show:" popup menu.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Preferred networks."
Delete the listed preferred networks using the "-" button but this time we did not add it back again with the "+" button as Apple recommends.
Set the "By default, join:" popup menu to "Automatic."
    Restart.
Manually rejoin the AirPort network using the AirPort menu icon, i.e. selecting the network (or selecting "Other" and typing in the network name if hidden) and typing in the WPA (or WEP) password.
Now every time we restart our iMac, it automatically connects again to the AirPort network and gets an IP address assigned by the router so that it also connects to the internet.
Restart again: it should join automatically without delay
[Update: Reader Karl Warschau pointed out that his 24" iMac Core 2 Duo will not reconnect after a restart if his WiFi network's name (SSID) is hidden. However, if its name is broadcast, then it works. He confirmed this with an AppleCare tech. We have also confirmed this.] [Bill Fox]

  • My airport only allows one device at a time

I recentley upgraded my modem but now I can only connect one wireless device at a time.  Suggestions?

If you are using a Mac running Lion....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort icon, then click Edit
    Click the Network tab
Make sure that the setting for Router Mode is set to DHCP and NAT
Click Update and the AirPort will restart in 25-30 seconds
If you are using Leopard or Snow Leopard.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Select the AirPort and click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP Address
Click Update to save the settings and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort to restart
    With either configuration above......
Now power cycle the entire network as follows:
Power off each device in any order that you wish. Make sure that the power cord is pulled from the back of the modem, or from the wall AC outlet
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem and let it run 3-4 minutes by itself
Start the AirPort and let it run 2 minutes by itself
Start each network device one at a time about a minute apart
    Check the network

  • Time machine now only has one network, where has the second gone?

suddenly my time machine is only showing one wireless channel to use, when previously there were two. how can i get the two networks up and running again?

Get a larger drive for your TM backups.
The recommended size is 3 times what you are backup. So if 315 GB is a backup then you need a 1 TB drive.

  • We have an airport extreme wifi in house, but also want to set up a hardwired ethernet connection for gaming and streaming of netflix.  The computer only sees one or the other not both at same time.

We have a new iMac 2.9ghz and are running an airport extreme set up in house with several express entenders.  The problem is that our son is streaming netflix and doing on line gaming and hogging all the band width.  Time Warner tech suggested a hard wired ethernet connection to computer base sattion next to computer so that it can have direct conenction to internet.  After much fishing of wire the connection worked great, but the wifi connection for the house is gone.  I unplugged the ethernet connection and everything is fine.  I read the articles about adjusting network preferences, but the issue seems to be in the extreme not in the computer.  the connection goes from cable modem to extreme, from extreme to house and to hard wired conenction to other computer.  Do we need a splitter before the extreme?

No. Something else is going on.
Your son may be hogging all the bandwidth but your wireless network should never simply disappear. Moreover, if your son isn't doing anything the available bandwidth for other devices should remain unaffected.
I suspect that something is miswired, and from what you describe I suspect that link is between the Extreme and the "other computer".
The way to accomplish what you propose is
Modem > Ethernet cable to Extreme's WAN port
Extreme's LAN ports > wired Ethernet devices.
There should be nothing but an Ethernet cable linking an Extreme LAN port and any other wired device. If you run out of available LAN ports on the Extreme, you need to by an "Ethernet switch" - they are not expensive, but don't call it a "splitter" or you will only confuse yourself. The switch would be connected to one of the Extreme's LAN ports, and you would connect additional devices to it. You can also use one of your Expresses for that purpose, assuming it is the current generation model with two Ethernet ports.

  • ATV finds 2 comps but only sees ones library

    Symptoms.
Imac and MBair both home sharing on with same apple ID they can see each others libraries and play them fine.
Apple TV sees both computers in the list but when i go to open the MBAir it instantly erros with could not connect make sire computers has itunes open and same network as apple tv
i have rebooted made sure both system are on same network and same itunes home sharing account (running latest lion 10.7.2 and itunes 10.5)
the thing is how does each computer using home sharing see their libraries but the apple tv doesnt. I have checked settings they look both setup the same.
this is very frustrating and not making any sense.

If it's easy enough to do, I'll pick a direct cable over wireless any day.
Since I don't have an Apple TV, I can only suggest you ask about the other stuff over in the Apple TV forums.

  • AirPort only sees the access point I am connected to

    Friends,
I am aware of numerous discussions on these forums revolving around AirPort and wifi-issues. I have searched by cannot find this one with its own thread, and think the issue might be buried in there with others.
One peculiar issue I see is that when I am not connected to any wifi network, AirPort will see them all and ask which one I want to connect to. However, when I select a specific network and bind to it, all of the other networks disappear in the drop-down box activated when you click the signal strength meter.
On a day-to-day basis, this doesn't matter, but sometimes, if I want to configure a travel wifi router at home, I have to jump through a few hoops so that my MacBook Pro will see the other one.
Perhaps this monogamous behavior is intended, but I would like to be able to "interact" with different access points whenever I'd like.
This issue must have been already reported; I just can't find it. Apologies in advance if this is a redundant report. I am running 10.5.1

No, do not hit reset .. it is not a WPS button.
Apple products do not use WPS, so no WPS button is needed. And they have no need to implement one.. nothing exists outside the Apple bubble.. didn't you know that??
Read the forum expert Tesserax instructions for using WPS. https://discussions.apple.com/message/16034147#16034147
But it is better to plug in your printer to a mac by usb and use the disk provided to do a full manual setup of wireless.. WPS is simply the easy way.

  • Cluster servlet only sees one server

I'm using WLS6.1 SP2 running on Solaris. I'm using the new version of the HttpClusterServlet
(weblogic.servlet.proxy.HttpClusterServlet) to proxy to 6 managed servers running
on two physical servers. It's just proxying web requests, not EJBs or anything
like that, and we're not using session state or SSL.
The problem is that the cluster servlet only sends requests to one server at a
time - no round-robin is going on. It seems to just latch onto the first server
it can find. So if I bring down all the managed servers, the first one that comes
back up gets all the requests forever.
The only parameters to the HttpClusterServlet are DebugConfigInfo = On and the
WebLogicCluster property which is set to:
              server1:9221:9222|server1:9231:9232|server1:9241:9242|server2:9221:9222|server2:9231:9232|server2:9241:9242
I've also checked the online debug info, using http://server1:proxyport/dummy.jsp?__WebLogicBridgeConfig.
This shows only one server under the General Server List. However it does change
if I take down the server listed there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
              BKR

    Hi Brian,
One thing I notice is that the servers listed in your WebLogicCluster
property show some instances listening on different ports. Pre-7.0,
clustered instances must be listening on different IPs, but the same port
              number. For example,
              server1 - listen address 192.168.1.100 - listening on port 8001
              server2 - listen address 192.168.1.101 - listening on port 8001
              server3 - listen address 192.168.1.102 - listening on port 8001
              ..etc...
So you are either trying to proxy to three different clusters, in which
case, your HttpClusterServlet configuration is incorrect, or you just have
your cluster configured in correctly (if you intend for all six servers to
be a part of one cluster).
              Hope this helps.

  • PowerMac 7,3 G5 dual 2.0 only sees one firewire device at a time

I thought my external FW800 drive was broken but it works on another machine. It also has FW400 capability so I tried that.
I switched to a FW400 cable and plugged it into the back of another FW400 external that is always running.
    Restarted.
Neither one showed up on desktop.
I turned off the second external and the first one mounted.
Not sure where to go from here and still don't know if rear FW800 works but first things first.
Why would neither run until I turned one off?
    Thanks.

  • AirPort Extreme on a Network Requiring Web Browser Login

I was looking into purchasing one of the new AirPort Extreme routers to use in my dorm. My school requires you to log in to its network through a web browser the first time you connect before you can gain any network or internet access. After you log in once your MAC address is stored and you are given an IP and allowed to access the network. My current Linksys wired router passes this page through to connected clients without a problem, but I tried using an older graphite AirPort base and it would not pass the page through and my MacBook Pro was unable to connect to the college network through it. My question is will the new AirPort Extremes pass this login page through and allow my Macbook Pro to login to the network through Safari?

That would make sense on most networks as you want the school's main router to only "see" one device, the router in your room. Then you can have your router assign IP addresses to as many devices as you want and the school's router still only "sees" one device.
If you configure your router as a bridge, then the school's router will be assigning IP addresses to each device connected to the router, probably not what you want.
The default mode for the AirPort Extreme is to act as a router. It will assign IP addresses in the 10.0.x.x range by default, but you can set it to assign IP's in the 192.168.x.x range if you prefer. You will probably get a Double NAT notice when you hook the router up. Click "ignore" and the message will go away.
I use an AirPort Express quite a bit for travel. If the hotel has an ethernet port, I can plug in and hook up 2-3 wireless devices and pay for only one connection.
Nothing is ever certain. If you go with the AirPort Extreme, might be a good idea to check the store's return policy...just in case.

  • AirPort Extreme on a network requiring sign-in. Help?

I was using a Cisco E2500 router as my networking hub. I live in an apartment complex that supplies high-speed internet with a sign-on in a web browser. The ISP is Boradweave/Veracity Networks. Using my Cisco router, I only had to sign in on my main MacBook Pro and the rest of my devices were able to connect to the internet. However, I bought an AirPort Extreme and after setting up the network, every device has to sign in indivually. This makes it impossible for devices like my AppleTV, Xbox 360, and PS3 unable to connect to the internet. Another problem is that the Veracity network doesn't like when I try to sign in on more than 2 devices, making it so only 2 computers can be connected. I really don't know how to go about fixing this problem or why the Cisco Router had no problem with this situation but the AEBS does. I appreciate any help or direction I can get.

That would make sense on most networks as you want the school's main router to only "see" one device, the router in your room. Then you can have your router assign IP addresses to as many devices as you want and the school's router still only "sees" one device.

  • Can printer connect to more than one network?

    Hello.
I just bought the wireless HP deskjet 3050 printer. I've connected it to the internet (network) and it's working perfectly. Is it possible to connect to more than one network? We have more than one internet line in the house so I was wondering if I can set it up for both lines. I understand that I can print with multiple computers on the same network (and I am able to do so), but how about on different networks?
    Thanks.

No, it only has one network connection device so can only connect to one at time, sorry.

iTunes sees what iPhoto sees, iPhoto only sees one library at a time.
