Airport partly working - wierd!

Suddenly, I cannot receive or send e-mails via Mail or Entourage, also, I cannot log on to Yahoo Messenger or MSN. However, my internet connection is fine (am posting using offending laptop). I am connected via Airport to another mac which is working fine. However, it works when i plug the broadband usb in directly.
Any ideas?

hai,
if ur are able to browse the internet with the wireless set up, but not able to go to few specific websites then its not really the problem with the base station ,
u need to check if the MSN and entrouge is working fine when u have the modem directly plugged into the computer .
if that true then u may need to hard reset the base station and configure it again .

  • Airport stopped working - need help

I have two iMac flat panels and Earthlink dsl. The way I'm networked may seem odd to those who know more, but it works for me. The phone line is hooked into the modem that was supplied by Earthlink (it only has one Ethernet connection). Then I have the Ethernet cable connected from the modem to my Airport extreme. Then another wire connection from the Aiport to my computer. My other computer is in another room, has an airport card, and is connected wirelessly.
As occasionally happens with Earthlink, the dsl was down for most of the weekend. During this time I connected the phone line directly to my computer and used dial-up. When dsl came back, it works fine when I connect the phone line back to the modem and then direct connect the Ethernet to my computer. But when I try to put back my original configuration using the Aiport, it doesn't work. I've tried re-setting and restarting everything a number of times. Help.
    Thank you!

If you changed the settings in the Network system preference panel
to enable certain connections to be made, and then physically undid
the wires to the hardware, those configurations may need to be re-
assessed to see if they show up. [Could be, too, the wires to and from
the Airport base station are reversed. The ethernet "in" and "out."]
    There are several settings and ways to configure each feature in Network;
so you can add and remove dialup, ethernet, and airport from the list in it.
You can also drag items in a list to place them in order of priority. And if
the wireless base station is getting a usable signal (there is a pass-through
port, the ethernet cable uses it) the desktop computer would still see the
internet even if the Airport isn't broadcasting. These details make it harder
to say what to do, in the blind, such as I am.
I have essentially the same setup; a phone line (DSL= digital subscriber
line) into the modem; an ethernet cable coming out and going to an AirPort
Extreme Base Station, and another ethernet cable going through the AEBS
into an iMac G4; and the AEBS allows for wireless use of the internet in the
house by any visiting computer user, including my own iBook G4.
My iMac G4 also has an Extreme wi-fi card installed, so I can run it that way,
too and test my AirPort Extreme Base Station that way; but I administer the
AEBS from the wired ethernet via the iMac G4, using the airport manager.
The basic setup instructions which accompanied the wireless base station
should be adequate for the configuration(s) most likely in use and yours, too.
    If you unplugged the AirPort base, and plug it back in, it would still retain settings;
but if you manually reset it (small hole, using straightened pin) all your settings
for the AirPort base would revert to factory specs. I don't reset mine unless all
other options (and I know of several before that one) are exercised. Generally,
the AirPort base unit will almost automatically work again if it has the wires into
it plugged in correctly; and the ones going out, too.
When you have an airport base station in-line with a computer, from the internet modem,
be it a cable modem (outputting to ethernet cable) and going through the Airport to another
computer's ethernet port, ideally these should all have a unique address you can set in the
Airport base station. Mine starts with a 10.00.xx etc, but an alternative could be like 193.xxx,
etc. With the airport management utility, you can check and choose settings for this config.
Your ISP may not like it if your configuration shows more than one IP address; but your
Airport and desktop computer may each have one reporting back online to them. Your
settings can route all your traffic so it is behind the built-in router's address in the Airport.
They would only see the correct one and not two, then.
All of these things are in the blind; mine has for the most part worked well in the nearly 5
years since I bought an AEBS model (looks like alien orb spaceship) with built-in dialup
modem as well as accessibility to cable/DSL or a network via ethernet; plus external antenna.
So, if you check your configurations in the Network system preferences panel, and note they
have hidden panels where you can access and change them; then see if you have the correct
ethernet wire-in and wire-out, from the Airport into the Desktop computer; and the settings in
the Airport manager utility tell you how the airport and other computers in your network see the
internet; and choose to change that if it isn't correct.
If you have never set any of these, there are online resources (maybe .pdf documentation) that
may be of help to set up the basic configurations to make a small network with wi-fi and desktops.
Links to info such as this will be good to cover the basics:
    "Creating a small Ethernet network" - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106658
Maybe someone who has memorized the correct Support links will reply and give you some shortcuts.
At this time, I feel there is too much unknown to pave a simple path; and honestly, even though I have
a spare new AEBS in the box in addition to one on the wall behind my desktop computer, I have not had
many issues with my hardware after the initial learning curve; then later when I went to DSL from dialup.
Hopefully this has helped a little!
    Best regards.

  • Can the AirPort Extreme work as an extender?

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender? (I have tried to research this online, of course, but I haven't had much luck.)
Background: The only option from our ISP is a router/modem combination. It used to be plugged directly into my dad's (Dell and Windows) desktop computer, but I was having trouble connecting all my devices wirelessly. So, I moved it into the kitchen and plugged it into the phone line (we have AT&T DSL) and got a USB wireless adapter for my dad's computer (because he didn't think he needed the wireless option on his "fancy" new Dell). I also have a different brand of adapter plugged into my old iMac G3, which I LOVE using.
Since doing this, my dad has constantly complained of his Internet not working correctly, things loading slowly, and having trouble connecting at all. (Full disclosure: he STILL uses the complete desktop version of AOL and refuses to give it up.) However, I've had no trouble on ANY of my devices--the G3, my white MacBook, my iPad, my iPod, or my mom's Kindle Fire. This leads me to believe the problem lies in the fact that he's using AOL because I usually don't have trouble when I briefly use Chrome on his desktop.
I've tried finding different solutions, including flashing an old router to use an extender and researching different extenders and bridges and such, but nothing looks like a viable solution because of all our components.
I'm wondering if the AirPort Extreme (probably the A1143;or any of the other AirPort devices) can work as an extender. To appease my dad, it'd be best to take the modem/router back to his man cave so he can hook it back up to his computer, but I'm not sure if the AirPort can pick up the wireless signal and perhaps be plugged directly into my G3 and otherwise act as an extender for my other devices (while searching for an Internet solution for my G3, I read on here that someone did this, but there was no further information on how it worked) or if I can plug it into the kitchen phone line and keep the USB adapter for the G3 and have wireless access to all my other things.
    Help?
(I can't find the original support article where a responder mentioned using the AirPort station with an iMac G3, but i did locate this one: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13080786#13080786)
(My iMac is one of the later ones. It's running 10.4.1 and is a 600MHz model.)

Simple question: Can the AirPort Extreme work as a wireless network extender?
Simple answer: Yes....IF....the AirPort Extreme is extending a wireless network that is being provided by another Apple 802.11n wireless router.
Another way of saying the same thing is that it will take a minimum of two Apple 802.11n wireless routers to extend a signal wirelessly.
The more complex answer involves distances and obstructions involved in the setup, or alternate solutions such as running Ethernet cabling or using Ethernet powerline adapters.

  • How do I make an Airport Extreme work with a Linksys WRT160N

I have a Linksys WRT160N V3 Router that I have connected to my cable modem. I have an iMac in another room along with a PC based laptop. Range is fine to get them to connect wirelessly. However what I would like to do is to also connect my Blu-Ray device to the internet. However it isn't wireless. I was told I could use an Airport Extreme to bridge to my WRT160N. What I want to do is hardwire connect my Blu-Ray player and perhaps my iMac to the Airport Extreme using my WRT160n's access to the cable modem. Basically I'm trying to make to wirelss routers talk to each other. I can't seem to make the Airport Extreme work. Any assistance would be great.
    Thanks,
    Tim

    Welcome to the discussions, Gonzotoo!
+I was told I could use an Airport Extreme to bridge to my WRT160N+
Unfortunately, this is not correct. The AirPort Extreme does not have the capability that you need. If you could connect the Linksys and Extreme together using an ethernet cable, it would function as you wish. Or, if it's not possible to connect them using an ethernet cable, you might take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in your home.

  • Moved G5 to new location, airport not working

I just moved my G5 downstairs to the same exact place where I typically use my laptop (powerbook G4). Never had an issue with the laptop recognizing airport and going online, but now my G5 won't show any networks at all and I can't get airport to work.
Is there something I should be changing in the settings or how can I get airport to work on my G5 in the new location?
    Thanks much!

    Hello BDAqua
No problem, I do quite a bit of experimenting with my Macs and find out some weird things, but some are working to my advantage, I always operate my Power Mac G5 without the side panel now, but of course keep the air deflector in place, unless theres company coming over, then I replace the side access panel. Also, there is an antenna inside the G5. It runs along the opposite side of the G5 case behind the logic board to the rear of the case, where the external antenna is connected. So by removing the side access panel, it allows for moderate reception. =) As mentioned earlier though, definitely not as good as the external antenna, but when used without the access panel in combination with the external antenna, it get better reception than my 1.25GHz iMac G4 did. And by the way, this also is true for Bluetooth as well, as I have a Bluetooth Board installed in my G5. =) I loaded my G5 once I bought it (Used).
    Regards again. =)

  • How do i configure my airport to work with my other wireless router

how do i configure my airport to work with my other wireless router? I want to be able to listen to itunes through my speakers wirelessly.

Please check out the following Apple Support article for details on the many methods to use an AirPort Express for iTunes streaming.

  • Airport Express works, but MacBook doesn't when connected directly to Modem

I have an interesting problem. I have Verizon DSL. Airport Express works, but Linksys and Netgear wifi routers don't work. Further more, if I disconnect the wifi router and directly connect a MacBook or a Windows notebook they don't work. These devices work if I enter a static IP address though. It is DHCP that doesn't work.
I have been using Verizon DSL for several years, and most recently I was using a Netgear wifi router. A few days ago it lost internet connection. Thinking that the Netgear broke, I bought a new Linksys WRT54GL to replace it. But it didn't work either. I happened to have an Airport Express lying around, so I connected that and surprisingly it worked! Then I wrote down the IP address shown by Airport Utility and typed that IP into Netgear as a static IP address and it worked too. If I remove all wifi equipment and connect a Windows PC or a MacBook directly to the DSL modem then neither works. (Note: my DSL modem doesn't use PPPoE it uses DHCP.)
So it seems that something changed with Verizon's DHCP such that only Airport Express can work. Contacting Verizon support was useless. What is so magical about Airport Express? I can't use Airport Express permanently because I have 3 wired computers to connect also, and Airport Express have ethernet ports. Airport Extreme does, so I am wondering if I should get one of those. Will the magic of Airport Express work in Extreme also?
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?

Hello petilon. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Does anyone know what is going on? How is Airport Express work with Verizon DHCP when nothing else can?
It sounds like Verizon is keying on the MAC address of the device connected to its modem ... so either they require that you register a MAC address with them or there is a problem with the modem in that it is retaining it even though you change the device connected.
If you haven't already, be sure to perform a complete power recycle when changing out network equipment. The following should be done each time:
o Power-down, the modem, router, and computer(s); wait at least 10-15 minutes. Order is not critical. If the modem has a backup battery, it should be removed and replaced to make sure that any stored configuration information is erased.
o Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Power-up the router; wait at least 5-10 minutes.
    o Power-up the computer(s).

The network on my airport express works, have wifi on the ipods, etc. But when I open airport utility on my mac and on the iphone nothing exists. Why?

Reboot the modem. Just pull the power for a few seconds. No settings are lost.  The laptop getting through to the internet is not relevent.

  • Airport express working on mac but not on pc

My airport express works wonderfully on my Macbook Pro, but I would also like my PC to connect to the same network. I have tried everything that I have found online, and the PC will not recognize or "find" the airport network. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Ok, thanks for the additional info.
    I suggest trying the following:
o Temporarily disable the WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless encryption, and then, check to see if any of the XP devices can now access the network/Internet?
o If they can't then, while the encryption is still disabled, change the radio mode on the AX to a non-"n" one, like "802.11g only." You can access this mode, by holding down the <Option> (Mac) or <Control> (PC) key prior to selecting the mode within the AirPort Utility. Can they access the network/Internet now?

  • Does Airport Extreme work will with AT

Does Airport Extreme work will with AT&T Microcell for the iPhone 4?

The AT&T Microcell will plug into one of the Ethernet ports on your AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Extreme will work just fine. Whether the Microcell works well is totally up to AT&T.

  • Very basic questions about how Airport Express works

I'm using a non-Apple wireless router at home. I'd like to stream music from my iBook to my stereo. Will an Airport Express do that? Will it get confused that there's another access point? Can my iBook receive streaming radio via the non-Apple wireless router and send it to Airport Express?
Alternatively: can I simply replace my non-Aple wireless router with an Airport Express? Will an Airport Express work as a wireless router? Will it to DHCP and NAT so that multiple computers can connect to the Internet through it?
    Thanks.

johnbkim, Welcome to the discussion area!
I'd like to stream music from my iBook to my stereo. Will an Airport Express do that?
    Yes
Will it get confused that there's another access point?
You would simply configure the AirPort Express (AX) to join your current wireless network.
Can my iBook receive streaming radio via the non-Apple wireless router and send it to Airport Express?
To stream non-iTunes items you will need to use Airfoil.
Alternatively: can I simply replace my non-Aple wireless router with an Airport Express?
Yes as long as you don't have any devices connected to that router via Ethernet.
Will it to DHCP and NAT so that multiple computers can connect to the Internet through it?
    Yes it is a router.

  • Does airport express work with garage band in lion?

Actually I know it can work and there are apps out there to make it work but I heard a rumor that Apple was going to allow functionaliy between the two in Lion. So my question is...
Will Airport Express work with Garage Band in Lion or do I have to buy third party software?

I believe the HP 2840 can be connected either via Ethernet or USB. If connected to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) by USB, only the basic printing functions will be shared out; the scanning, faxing, copying features are not supported.
If the AX is configured so that its Ethernet port is enabled, the it may be possible to gain all of the printer's features by connecting it to the AX by Ethernet. In this case, the printer will use its own Print server to share out all of these features.

  • AirPort Extreme- Works in 1 room, not the other

For the first month I lived in this house, the AirPort Extreme worked great in every room and in both the front and back yards. The unit is in my bedroom. When in my office, about 15 feet away, the unit works fine and my computer shows full signal strength. When in the living room, 5 feet away from the office, I have no signal at all. So, I ask, ***? Is there any type of diagnostic I can run, or any sort of reset I can perform? Unplugging and plugging back in does not do the trick. Is there a software update I am lacking, or some preventative maintenance I need to perform? This is pretty frustrating.

WTFmac, Welcome to the discussion area!
It may be RF interference caused by another RF signal or the material used in your house is blocking the signal.
Is your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) using 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz? If 2.4 GHz have you tried changing the channel used by the AEBS?

  • Will airport extreme work with Mac OS v10.6?

I have an Imac from 2009, Using OS X v 10.6.8 and cannot get an airport extreme to match.  I kept getting a msg to upgrade airport utility hardware 6.2.2, but then an unable to do so.    Are the 2 incompartible?   I thought the advantage of apple products was connectivity.   Any thoughts are appreciated!!  Paul

The most recent AirPort Extreme works without any problem with Mac OS X Snow Leopard, but the problem is that it requires AirPort Utility 6.3 to set it up, and this version is only available for OS X Lion and Mountain Lion.
If you don't want to upgrade Mac OS X and you have an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, you can use them to set up your AirPort Extreme. Open Settings > Wi-Fi, choose your AirPort station and follow the steps.
If you don't have any of those devices, upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. Open the Mac App Store and purchase it. Make a backup of your data with Time Machine and check that your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com When the download finishes, upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. After upgrading, open  > Software Update, and install AirPort Utility 6.3, which you have to open and follow its steps.
The other option is to return your AirPort Extreme and get an older one
