Airport plugged but no signal

Hi,
I have just recently plugged a Airport extreme card into my G5 dual processor in the available slot. we have a network that has been set up for a while and has worked well on the 6-7 laptops that are networked to it.
the problem i have is that although the G5 now recognises it has an airport card it doesn't pick up the network even though we have updated the base station with the G5's airport card info.
the only thing i can think of is that the antenna is faulty as it seems to be plugged correctly.
if anyone can help or has had similar difficulties i would appreciate any help
thanks
alex

If you'll take a little time to peruse the most recent posted discussions, you'll notice that hundreds of people are experiencing the same problem with equipment that was working properly prior to these recent updates. For some reason, Apple has refused to respond to these queries even though we all know that they are fully aware that this is a major problem.
Perhaps if you and the rest of the public will continue to post questions regarding the recent airport firmware updates (or any updates relating to it), then maybe they'll eventually HAVE to respond. But for the time being, they're unreachable. I certainly hope you'll have more success than I've experienced.

  • Airport Installed But No Signal

Hi, I'm having connection issues with the original airport card in my imac. It previously worked and now is not. Perhaps you can help. Here's my troubleshooting process thus far:
    1. Airport card is inserted securely and antenna is connected.
    2. Airport status is greyed out in task bar. Internet Connect shows absolutely no signal strength.
    3. My iBook G4 sits next to iMac and is able to connect to my router as well as detect other networks.
    4. PRAM has been reset. Disk permissions have been verified and repaired.
    5. For a brief second, the airport icon in task bar detected three neighbouring networks, but not mine. However this was very brief and no networks show up now.
    6. I had both computers connected previously via ethernet. Now each computer is unable to access the other's drop box. I'm also only able to connect as a "guest."
    7. I tried to create a wireless network between both computers to no avail. However, when I created a network on the iMac, signal strength suddenly went to full.
I think that's about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Per your numbering...
    (1) Since the time it worked previously, have the card and adapter been removed? Or have they been installed in the iMac and not touched since that time?
    (2) Make sure you do not have +Internet Sharing+ (set to share Ethernet using AirPort) enabled. Actually, turn OFF +Internet Sharing+ in System Preferences Sharing pane for now. Disconnect anything connected to the Ethernet port. In System Preferences Network pane, Show *Network Port Configurations* and make sure AirPort is at the top of the list. You may also want to turn off the services you do not use for networking, such as FireWire and Internal Modem. If you made any changes, be sure to click +Apply Now+, then restart.
    (4) Did you also try reseting the PMU. This is the procedure
    http://mrjcd.com/junk/PMU.jpg
If you have a voltmeter, check the PRAM battery if possible. If you disconnect the iMac from power for a while, that probably serves the purpose of the PMU reset as well. When the iMac is reconnected to power and stared up, do not connect any peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices, except standard keyboard and mouse. Try the AirPort connection again.
Also, try starting up in Safe Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
This will run some maintenance during startup. It will also start up with only Apple's essential system extensions and processes running; try using the AirPort connection again in Safe Mode.
    (6) That may be an unrelated problem. Can the iMac still access the Internet using a wired Ethernet connection?
    (7) If the iMac can still connect to the Internet using Ethernet, what happens when you go to System Preferences Sharing pane +Internet Sharing+ tab and turn ON +Internet Sharing+ ? Set it to +Share your connection from *Built-in Ethernet* To computers using AirPort+. Then, try to use your iBook's AirPort to access this wireless network created by the iMac. Does that work?

  • Will plugging an ethernet cable from a powerline adapter into my Airport Express improve the signal strength that it re-sends as WiFi?

I have a Airport Express (older style that plugs into the power socket) up one end of the house, which gets the signal from an AirPort Extreme at the front of the house.  It works ok for general internet and email, but the signal at the Airport Express end is not really strong enough for my Apple TV.  So today I bought an Edimax Powerline Adapter.  Connected one end to the AirPort Extreme and the other end to the Apple TV and Apple TV now works great!  So I was thinking, if I connected my Airport Express to the Powerline Adapter with an ethernet cable, would that improve the strength of the signal that the Airport Express would re-send out for WiFi.  But all that happens is that neither the AirPort Extreme or the Airport Express now seem to broadcast any WiFi signal.  Is it possible to do this?

Yes, but you need to change the mode of the Express from wireless extend to create a wireless network and the routing part to bridge. Otherwise it will indeed mess up.

  • I have a internet connection thru a cable modem but the signal is not strong to reach one of other rooms, so i purchased a airport express so how do i connect it to the exisiting modem do i have to install the cd that came with it, the modem is connected

I have a existing internet connection thru a motorola SBG900 cable modem connected to my imac, i purchased a macbook pro but the signal is not strong, so i purchased a airport express but i dont know how to install it, do i have to install the CD on my macbook pro or the imac.  i live in a four bed room house distance between the imac and macbook pro is around 25 -30 feet.

  • Disk Shows Up in AirPort Utility But Not On Network

I have a brand new AEBS. My network consists of my Windows XP box and an Apple TV.
Using MacDrive, I formatted my external hard drive to HFS+. It is blank. When I plug it into my AEBS I can see it under the Disks pane in AirPort Utility, but cannot find it on the network (and obviously it doesn't auto-mount).
Currently my machine is part of a Windows Active Directory domain (it is my work laptop). However, I've tried logging into the machine itself (rather than the domain) and setting up a Workgroup that I then set under the File Sharing tab of AirPort Utility. Same result.
I've tried all of the suggestions I've read so far, such as mounting from the IP of the base station and the name of the disk. Nothing. Disabled my firewall. Nothing.
Any help would be appreciated. Also, it would obviously be the best case scenario if I could mount the drive while logged into the domain. I'm not sure what I should place as the Workgroup under the File Sharing pane for that. I've tried the name of the domain and the name of the domain's network, but neither work. I guess this would be tackled once I can see the disk at all while not logged into the domain.
    Thanks,
    Chad

Can anyone shed some light on this issue? Right now I'm actually thinking about just returning the AEBS.

  • I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

    Welcome!
Only one variant of the PowerMac G4 could use the faster Airport Extreme Card. The rest used the original Airport card that is pretty slow.
To get fast wireless without buying more than one thing, consider this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Edimax/EW7722IN/
It goes in an available PCI slot
There are USB solutions also. However, all PowerMac G4 towers had only slower USB 1.1 ports, so any USB wireless adaptor can only run at about wireless 'B" speeds (slow) unless you also install a PCI USB 2.0 adaptor card. Doing that would allow a USB wireless adaptor to run at its maximum rated speed. These items working together would accomplish that:
    USB wireless "dongle:"
Newer Technology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b USB Adapter + Plug and play direct or with extension cradle
    USB PCI adaptor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ntk=Primary&Ns=P_Popularity%7c1&Ne=5 000&N=7069&Ntt=USB+PCI
Each approach has its advantages. The PCI wireless card is a one-piece solution that takes up no desk space. The USB2 card+USB2 Dongle gives you more fast ports for transferring date from other external USB devices (primarily cameras and external hard drives) at hugely faster rates than can the original ports. I have a USB 2 PCI card in my G4 tower strictly for transferring images from my digital SLR camera in a timely manner.

  • I have linked my seagate hard drive to my airport extreme but can not seem to find it in finder any ideas

    Hi Help Please
i have just linked an external hard drive to my airport extreme but it does not seem to appear in finder under shared !!!! any ideas

i have plugged the hard drive into a usb router which in turn is plugged to to the AEBS it is visible in airport utility but then can not find it anywhere else!!
First, the drive must be formatted correctly to work at the USB port of the AEBS. That means a format of Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or FAT32. NTFS will not work.
You need to have a powered USB hub, even if the hard drive has its own power supply
Next, you may not have configured the Finder Preferences to display a connected hard drive. Please follow these steps:
o Click anywhere on the open desktop so that the Finder menus appear at the top of the screen
o Click Finder, then click Preferences
    o Click the General tab
o Under the heading of "Show these itmes on the desktop", make sure you have a check mark next to Connected Servers
Restart both the AirPort Extreme and your Mac
Open Finder and check under the SHARED heading for your AirPort Extreme icon
Click on your AirPort Extreme and a folder will appear in the window to the right representing your hard drive
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop
Hopefully, you are not planning to try to backup files using the Time Machine application, as this is not supported by Apple.

I'm trying to setup a printer go wireless through my airport extreme, but every time I try to print the printing file gets paused. I'm in loop. PLEASE HELP! (The printer is a Brother 7020  monochrome)

I had the exact same problem
It turns out I was using a 20 foot USB cable between the printer and the Airport Extreme and the signal had become to weak to work. Try using nothing more than a 6 foot cable or try a new cable

  • Retina MacBook Pro is not connecting with Airport Extreme 5 GHz signal

I believe I have done my due diligence to find the answer to my question here and other places but I must be missing it. I have a Retina MacBook Pro that as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer. When I click on the Airport icon in the menu bar, it is indicating a 2.4 GHz connection. I have looked at discussions which say I can give separate names to to both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals. I can't seem to find that. I also read where you can reorder the order of signal preference. I can't seem to find that either. Interestingly, I have an Airport Express that is extending the network. When option clicking on its icon in airport utility, I can see both the 2.4 and 5 GHz information. I don't se that in the Airport Extreme. I am thinking about gettng the newest Airport Extreme but if I don't need to...
    Thanks for any help!

as far as I know should select the 5 GHz signal from my Airport Extreme (Generation 1 with 7.6.4 firmware) which is literally 3 ft. from my computer
A Generation 1 AirPort Extreme is not a simultaneous dual band wireless router. It can produce either a 2.4 GHz....or....a 5 GHz wireless network signal, but not both simultaneously.
If you want the Gen 1 Extreme to produce and deliver a 5 GHz wireless network, it can do so, but any 2.4 GHz devices that you have will not be able to connect to the 5 GHz signal.
A new simultaneous dual band AirPort Extreme will produce both a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signal simultaneously. Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality based on their capabilities and location in relation to the AirPort Extreme.

  • Green light on Airport Extreme but will not connect to internet

I have tried restarting computer and Airport Extreme but it will not connect to internet.  Unit has been working great up until now.  I have made no changes in system.
This Airport/time machine is 2009 version.

The Cisco DPC 3010 is a cable modem, so you will need to let the modem completely reset before you connect it to the AirPort Extreme.
It may be necessary to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and reconfigure it, but we will try a shortcut first to see if that can be avoided.
Power off the entire network.....all devices....modem, AirPort, computers, mobile devices, etc in any order that you want.
Be sure to disconnect the power cable on the modem, either on the back of the device or pull the power cord from the wall AC jack
Leave everything powered off for at least 30 minutes.  Longer is better, as it sometimes takes the equipment back at the ISP longer to completely reset and issue a new fresh IP address to the modem.
After the wait period, power up the modem first, and let it run for at least 5 minutes by itself. If your modem documentation states that the modem should be powered up for 15 minutes, then go with 15.
Power up the AirPort Extreme next, and let it run a few minutes
Then power up other devices one at a time about a minute apart
When the entire network is back up, check the network.
It this does not work, you will have to start over again as above, except this time you will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme.
To do that, power off the AirPort Exterme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Extreme.....and keep holding it in for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back into the Extreme
Release the reset button after the hold period, and allow a full minute for the Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Power off the AirPort now, and start it back up in the proper sequence
If things still don't work, then you likely have a defective AirPort Extreme that will need to be replaced.

  • My system can not connect with the Airport Express while the signal is very good?

Neither my phone nor my desktop (windows 7) can not make a connection with the Airport Express. The signal keeps flashing amber.
Several specialists have checked but can not solve this problem. Any ideas?

I am in exactly the same boat...

  • Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion   3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS) cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC.

Installed today Time Capsule 4 gen. with iMac OS X Lion. I also have  3 Windows PC (XP OS, Vista OS, Seven OS). Internet Access is cable modem with TC as Wi-Fi. Time Machine on iMac found TC for backup easily. Have Wi-Fi access on PC XP with Airport utility but cannot create TC. Does the Airport utility under Windows is way to access backup capabilities with TC ?

The TC is really just an external networked hard disk plus router.. you can access the hard disk and place files on it from any computer. You can backup any computer to the TC but it will have to use a backup software in windows.. there are literally thousands available. The built in msbackup is horrible.. but you can download lots of different software and buy then online for not a lot. Macrium Reflect has a free disk image backup, and when you pay for it includes incremental. I think disk images are well worth it, as they recover much better.. and their is a proper method of recovery using a boot cd.
BTW the TC space is not endless. And it is designed to hold a large number of incremental backups.. so anything you do in backing up several machines will make the number of backups limited. Remember you can also use a usb hard disk plugged in as a Network accessible disk. But it has to be formatted HFS+ or Fat32.. the later being highly undesirable.

  • Can I plug a TTL signal into the mic on my sound card?

Basically I want to trigger some LV code using an incoming 0-5 volt TTL signal.
And I was wondering if I could plug that TTL signal into my mic input and read the signal with the LabVIEW sound VIs.
But I'm unsure if I'll just end up frying my sound card.
I know I could buy a cheap NI USB DAQ board for $99 ... but I just want to get this done asap, and thought the sound card idea might work.
    Any ideas?

A sound card is AC coupled. And has limited  bandwidth. So I will say this is a far from optimal solution. What are you trying to do?
Sound cards are most often made for line-in signals levels. That is +/-1 volt. But this may vary from vendor to vendor.
Besides which, my opinion is that Express VIs Carthage must be destroyed deleted
(Sorry no Labview "brag list" so far)

  • Possible to add a non-Apple signal booster to Airport Extreme to improve signal strength?

    Good day to you all.
This might seem like a weird question. I've just rencently purchased my first ever MacBook Pro to enter the Mac family
With it, I also bought an AirPort Extreme. Like others today, I've had a lot of trouble trying to get the thing set up. I somehow managed to get it working, but the signal strength in the far room of the house is too weak.
I suppose I could just get a better Wi-fi adapter for that computer to pick up the better signals, but, my question is:
I have a signal booster (repeater?) from Cisco/Linksys that I used for my Cisco/lynksys router. It would connect to the network and bounce that signal from that base off to improve the signal strength to the rest of the house. It worked like a charm. So, my question is is it at all possible to connect a non-apple booster like this to the network to bounce the signal?
I assume it would work, but thought I'd ask anyway just to be sure; to check if anyone else knows about this. I'm going to try sometime soon if this works, but would love to know what others think.
Thank you very much for your time and help!!

Ah, yes. Good idea. Well, in a few year's time, we'll probably move on to better devices, but, for those who do have something that isn't Apple...I encourage you to try it.
I'm using the Cicsco/Lynksys Range Extender that I believe is simply called RE1000; mine was refurbished, too.
Anyway, it came with a set up disc that I'm not entirely sure if it works on a Mac computer. I didn't try it.
You'll run the set up disc (somehow), make sure you follow the instructions on the screen, and it should allow the RE1000 to find the network you created using the AirPort. Once the set up is complete, it'll ask you to move the RE1000 to another electrical outlet in your house that can take the signal and bounce it to a wider area of your house, and presumably the neighborhood (secure your network).
Seemed to work without a hitch. So, if you're not using an Apple range extender (another AirPort type thing), hopefully this helps you. It did work for me, otherwise I would have taken the AP Extreme back for a refund haha

  • Connects to Airport extreme but not to internet

Whenever I close my laptop and reopen, I lose internet connection thru the airport extreme and I won't get it back. It seems that I will have connection to the Airport Extreme, but not the internet.
Sometimes what fixes it is turning the airport off and then on again (sometimes multiple times). Usually restarting the computer fixes it (but not always).
What happens is this (viewing Sysprefs/network/airport/network status and "internet connect"): the internet connect will report connecting...then will announce "connected", but show no "time elapsed" at the same time the Net status will read "airport is connected to ..network...with it's own IP address and may or may not be connected to the internet" And I won't be.
Then, when it starts working again (after the abovementioned turning off/on) it will start counting time elapsed, then in Net Status it will say "airport connected to ..network. you are connected to the internet via airport."
Also, whenever I use "internet connect" to turn the airport off, when I turn it back on again I will not have internet access, just the messages I list above. The "strenth meter" will say my signal is good (which it should be) and it says I am connected but doesn't show "elapsed time" nor will I have actual internet access.
Again, restarting the computer will usually work (less often, logging out then back in).
Another strange symptom-- When I hit the "disconnect" button under the airport section of "internet connect" it disconnects, then reconnects immediately. When I hit the disconnect button w/ in the Sysprefs/network/airport...etc, it does nothing but bring to the front window the "internet connect" window. So the only way to "disconnect" is to turn off the airport (which results in the above problem).
Side note--I am in the habit of turning off the airport (not the base, but from the computer) when I don't plan on using it for security-- am I being excessively paranoid? I do have my firewall in operation. Should I just leave it (being the airport) on all the time (in your humble opinion?
Sorry if this makes no sense or rambles, it is now 5:30 am and She Who Must Be Obeyed will be getting up in about an hour wanting to know if I fixed the computer yet. I'm tired.
    Thank you in advance.
