"airport" process uses all of the memory an cpu

After I reinstalled my MacBook and updated to the latest version of Tiger (10.4.8) my airport network behaves very strange. When I boot my MacBook or disconnect/connect my Airport network a process called "airport" is consuming all the CPU and memory. It uses one core exclusivly and gows to 1,2 GByte of RAM (even more virtual Memory). This slows down the macbook to almost still and heats up the CPU.
The only thing I can do is to kill the process. Then everything works fine. But this is annoying.
It seems to make no difference if I use a wireless LAN or not. When airport is enabled then this bug occurs.

On this thread,
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=349
2852, people that have Check Point Software's
SecureClient are reporting the airport process using
~95% of CPU time.
I had SecureClient installed and I can confirm that
if you uninstall SecureClient, the airport process
works normally again. I don't know if this is the
only source of this problem, but if you happen to
have SecureClient, then you might want to uninstall
and confirm if this solves your problem.
Also I would be curious if anyone is having this
problem that has never had SecureClient, or any 3rd
party VPN software.
I can confirm that at least some of my problem with the "airport" process was related to VPN software. After uninstalling the Cisco VPN client, problems dramatically reduced. Interestingly, I still have the Checkpoint client installed, but only rarely see problems with "airport".

  • A process named "update.exe *32" and description is "Firefox" keeps using a lot of memory and cpu; the longer forefox is on, the worse it gets. How to prevent?

    using Windows 7, firefox 15.0.1
This process uses more and more memory and CPU, sometimes there are several of these processes running. If I kill these processes, it doesn't seem to affect the utilization of Firefox. Then the process slowly starts to use more and more memory and CPU all over again.
This happens all the time, every time I use Firefox.

I do not have a ComObjects folder under C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files. That is not part of Firefox.
wscript.exe is a utility included with Windows to run scripts at the system level. It generally is not used by major programs. If update.exe is starting up with Windows, you may be able to find the script that wscript.exe is running using [http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx Autoruns].
It definitely sounds viral. I suggest deleting the update.exe file, although Windows might prevent you from doing that until you kill all related processes. And if you have a persistent infection, the file may be restored or re-downloaded.
It might be easiest to seek assistance from a forum more dedicated to malware cleanups such as the following:

  • Photoshop CS6 not using all available computer memory [was:Hello all]

I have the creative cloud trial version, and when I use photoshop cs6 it will not allow me to use all of the memory. I would love any help that can be offered.

Sound like you starting the 32 bit version of Photoshop on a Windows system. If you have a 64 bit Windows system both the 32bit version and the 64bit version of CS6 is installed. Look in you start button you should sett two CS6 start icons one for each version. Only the 64 Bit version can use more than 4GB of Ram.

    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Syslogd process uses all available cpu & console app won't run.

I have a Mac Mini (G4 power PC) running 10.5.5. Just recently after several minutes the system never wakes. It just shows the SBBOD. All I can do is hold down the power button and reboot. When the system reboots, using the activity monitor, I see that the process named syslogd uses all available cpu. I can still do things, but the cpu is saturated.
I took a snapshot of the syslogd process, and I can post it here if anyone thinks it might help.
If I activate the console application, the window comes up then hangs with the SBBOD.
The syslogd process uses all available cpu right after reboot, and does so regardless of which user (including root) is logged in. Attempting to kill the syslogd process with the activity monitor does nothing

Thanks! It took a long time for the disk utility to fix the permissions, but as soon as it did, the logger process calmed down. Looking at the log file now, I see it was my McAfee virus scan causing the logger to flip-out.
I'm now looking for a new MAC anti-virus program.

  • Final cut pro using all of my memory

So I have the latest version of Mavericks (as of late July) and the latest version of Final Cut Pro (10.1.2). Now I am creating a short film for my Extension English major work and I am editing with Final Cut Pro, the problem that I am having is that the program keeps using up all of my memory under the "other" field. My "Other" usage is weighing in at around 60GB as of now. I do own a 2TB harddrive and my MacBook is 120GB (with HSC documents that I need to keep or else my future as a human is basically pointless).
How am I able to continue editing my project without using all of my memory. is there an autosave switch i need to turn off, is there a problem with my software!?!?
    Please help!

You really need to get an external drive – Thunderbolt, USB3, or Firewire 800 – depending on the vintage of your machine. And you should get a second external for backup. (Sorry to be spending your money for you, but it's important; drives fail – both spinning drives and SSDs.)
Put your media, and your libraries on the external drive. You can drag the libraries you have now to the new drive, working in the Finder, with FCP closed,. Before you do that, it's a good idea to select the libraries and use the Consolidate Library Files command. WHen you drag a library to another drive, it will be copied. Before you trash the duplicate libraries on the boot drive, open the new libraries to make sure they work properly.
    Good luck.

I misplaced my ipad, so I remotely erased it.  Then I found it, but now I cannot use all of the options in the settings.  I have restored from backup, but it still is not letting me use all functionality.  Help!

Would throwing it in Recovery mode and restoring as new clear it up?
    (same for Ipad)
Step 1: Turn off the iPhone. To do this press and hold the power button till you see the “Slide to Power off” screen. Now slide the button to turn it off.
In case your iPhone is stuck in an infinite loop and the previous option is unavailable, press and hold the Power and Home button till the screen goes off. Remember to leave both the buttons as soon as the screen goes off and before the Apple logo appears again.
Step 2: Connect the iPhone’s USB cable to your computer but not to your iPhone yet.
Step 3: Now hold down the Home button and while you are holding it connect the USB cable. Keep holding the Home button till you see the Connect to iTunes screen on your iPhone(Screenshot shown below). iTunes will show an alert saying a device in recovery mode has been detected.
Here’s what your iPhone screen will look like once its in the iPhone Recovery Mode.

  • How to check the memory and CPU usage on NPU

    Hi expert ,
Could you tell me how to check the memory and cpu usage on NPU?
I think ASR1000 has this command (show platform hardware qfp active...) , but I coudn't find the same command on ASR9001.
I checked " show controllers np counters all"  command, but I did not find it.
    Platform: ASR9001
    version: 4.3.2
    NP: Tyhoon
    Thanks,

    Hi Kanako,
understand your question, but something like that doesnt exist for the trident/typhoon NPU's for the asr9k.
in fact cpu usage is not really applicable for parallel/serialized hardware forwarders, but mainly the KPI is here
    the PPS it handles.
The max pps it can handle is dependent on feature set.
What you could do is measure the rates on the PARSE_FABRIC_RECEIVE count (packets received from fabric, so egress direction), PARSE_ENET_RECEIVE count (packets received from the interface to the fabric, so ingress) and the LOOPBACK count, that is packets that are recirculated for extra processing. The sum of these 3 gives an idea of the PPS rate the NPU is working on.
Memory consumption is something tricky also, there are many memories attached to the NPU, notably:
TCAM used for vlan matching, ACL and QOS matching
Search memory for L2 and L3 (shared on Trident, separated on Typhoon)
Frame memory for packet bufferin in QOS
Stats memory, for all kinds of counters of QOS maps, interface stats etc
their usage is rather dynamic also.
The few things you want to verify on these are:
    - ACL usage (in terms of Tcam entries)
    - MAC table size (2M max on typhoon)
    - FIB size (4M max on typhoon)
frame memory is dependent on the buffering, which is a sum of all the packets instant queue length and size of all pmaps attached to interfaces served by the same NPU. there is no good overview as to how much you have available of that, but it has a rather significant size 1G or 2G depending on the TR or SE cards (typhoon specific).

  • Airport process using 90%+ of CPU

I have a MacBook and for some reason, using the activity monitor I see Airport is using up almost one full core. I've tried rebooting and such and airport is always using a lot of CPU time. Its very annoying since all this processor usage is causing my fan in my Macbook to run at full throttle all of the time. I'm on a wireless G network with WPA.

I have a MacBook Pro and I am experiencing the same problem. After each reboot or wakeup a process called airport (probably /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/A/Resources/air port) takes up a lot of CPU.
I just kill the process. After a reboot, killing needs administrator rights, but then almost immediately the process starts again. Killing it again makes it go away till the next wakeup or reboot.
It seems that wakeup in the neighborhood of a WiFi base guarantees this problem. However, on the road out of reach of any base, I can usually wake up the machine without a problem.
Killing the process does not seem to interfere with correct functioning of airport in any way.
As said before: it eats away battery life and makes the machine uncomfortably hot. Apart from that, because a lot of CPU is being used by this process, it is very hard to resume your work after a wake up because the machine becomes very unresponsive.
As a temporary measurement, I launch activity monitor automatically. The amount of clicks to kill the process is then minimal. Still, it is annoying and makes me look clumpsy if I am rewaking my machine for a presentation or meeting.

When I use JTextarea my PC run out of memory and CPU
Can you sagest the right viewer component ?

Sounds like you have never done a PRAM reset or a SMC reset. Do both and see if this helps:
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    • On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • Installer process using up lots of memory whenever I download something

I've noticed that whenever I download something, my computer becomes very slow and will briefly freeze. This typically lasts 1-5 minutes, although sometimes the slowness persists after the stalling ends. I opened up Activity Monitor and saw that a process called "Installer" was using up to 100+% of my CPU and over 1GB of real memory during the times the computer would stall. I ran the lsof command to see what this Installer process was, and apparently it's from that awful Genieo scam. However, Genieo is not visible in my Applications and a Finder search revealed only "InstallGenieo" (version 1.0) and installgenieo.dmg--I don't think I ever actually fully installed it. If I double-click on "InstallGenieo", I get the dialog boxes "To open "java," you need a Java SE 6 runtime. Would you like to install one now?" and "Java Is Required To Run Genieo". This latter box has the options "Read more...", "Reinstall Genieo", "Install Java", and "Close". This leads me to believe that I never actually went through with installing it since I typically don't do any installations that require further installations.
I don't really have anything important on my computer since the majority of my files are either on Google Drive or have been emailed to myself (and so are recoverable). Is transferring everything to Drive a reasonable way of backing up my documents? I don't have an external drive since I really only go on the internet on my computer and don't play games or use other downloads apart from Anki. I'm asking this because I've hesitated on following the instructions for getting rid of Genieo given in other discussions since I'm not sure to what degree I should back things up. Also, since it doesn't show up under my Applications I was curious about whether the same steps needed to be followed (such as installing Genieo 2.0).
If someone could give insight on this or suggest alternative methods of removing this stupid thing, I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Joelle
