Airport question (newbie)

hi. i hope this question doesn't sound too naive. i have two macs in the house. one in the basement and one in my son's room. i want to be able to let my son go online (we are both wireless but i haven't yet installed his) but i also want to be able to monitor his usage without having to go into his room every day .is there a way for us to "share" the network so that when either of us logs on we see the history of either imac? i am not trying to "spy" - he knows and agrees to this......just wondering iof its possible...is this what airport can do?.......any help would be appreciated....thanks so much.....Larry

The best solution is to use a wireless router which offers a logging feature. Then periodically check the logs on the router.

  • Airport Question for a Mac Newbie

I just got a Macbook Pro and I also bought the Airport Extreme. When I click on the Airport Icon I can see about 15 or so different networks at any given time. I have a 2 part question. First how do I know which network/router is mine? How can I rename the network that is listed? I am very new to Mac's and wireless networking. I just want to make sure that I have protected my network properly. I set up a password for WAP is that all I need to do? One last thing, is there anyway I can make sure that I am protected properly? Thanks Much!!!
    MacBook Pro 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

A question eh? My counting must be off I see at least 4 question marks...
You know which router is yours because you set it up and named it. If you still can't figure it out you should pick a better name. When you click on your network and type in your password you should be able to connect.
To rename a network you will need to connect to it and run the AirPort Admin Utility which is location in the "Utilities" folder in your "Applications" folder.
If by WAP you mean WPA then you are off to a great start. When you picked the password I hope you didn't make it too easy to guess. Try putting numbers, letters and symbols in it and you should make it at least 16 charaters long to be sure that you are safe (I use 24 characters).
I would suggest looking at this tutorial from Apple - it might help answer some questions and should give you a better understanding:

  • Please Help me with Airport Question.......

I am wondering what is the difference between Airport Extreme Base Station ($179) and Airport Express Base Station ($99)?
I currently have a Linksys Cable Modem and a Linksys Wireless Router (WRT54GS) and am having lots of issues with it, so I am thinking about getting an Airport Wireless router instead of Linksys.
My question is will the Airport Base Station work for Windows PC's wireless also in addition to my Macbook Pro and iPhone?
And difference between Airport Extreme and Express Base stations.
They both look like wireless routers but with a $80 difference.
I have never used an Airport router so I'm a newbie when it comes to those.
    Thanks in advance!!!!
    Patrick

Yes, either will work with both Macs and Windows machines.
The differences are shown here: http://www.apple.com/wifi/
The Extreme allows you to connect wired Ethernet as well, and you can connect an external HDD for network storage. The Express allows you to connect speakers and stream music from your computer.
Probably the biggest difference is that the Extreme is true dual-band, meaning 802.11n devices run at 802.11 speeds even if there are 802.11g devices on the network. With the Express, if there are g devices on the network, everything runs at g speed. Note that this really only matters for local file transfers - if you're just using the router to connect to the internet, g speed is plenty fast enough.

  • Airport Questions

I have my new iMac 24 and airport on my desk, but after quickly running through the setup to get things running, I'm left with a pile of wires that I want to relocate to a desk shelf below the desk. This will involve relocating my airport extreme, external hard drive and cable modem. My questions are (1) if i shut down airport to do this relocate, should everything come back after power back up, or do I have to go through the setup activation all over again? (2) I've ordered a 500Gb external hard drive to use for backup and when that arrives, what's the best way to hook the external hard drive, the cable modem and printer to the airport. This shelf doesn't have much wiggle room for connections, so I want to make all the connections to airport before powering back on.

    (1) if i shut down airport to do this relocate, should everything come back after power back up, or do I have to go through the setup activation all over again?
Yes, the base station's settings will be "remembered." You will not have to reenter them again if you just recycle power.
    (2) I've ordered a 500Gb external hard drive to use for backup and when that arrives, what's the best way to hook the external hard drive, the cable modem and printer to the airport.
o Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > \[WAN port] AEBSn
o External hard drive > (USB cable) > USB hub
o Printer > (USB cable) > USB hub
o USB hub > (USB cable) > \[USB port] AEBSn

  • Sync question (Newbie warning)

    Hi,
I have a small question regarding pacman. I installed from [unsupported] rtorrent (rs_rtorrent) and libtorrent (librtorrent) since the packages in the [community] are not up to date (I need the bleeding edge because of some stupid torrent site). I have now few questions:
    1) Let's say the packages in [community] got updated for even a newer version, since I don't have them installed I would get no notification, right?
    2) Even if the packages in [unsupported] got updated I would still get no notification since I only have the .pkg on my own machine without any sync to a central database.
What is the most simple way (newbie-wise) to keep package in [unsupported] updated, other than repeatedly checking the rtorrent site/AUR site (through web browser) for updates? Can pacman do this for me?

Thanks for the solution, I subscribed to my packages at AUR.
No problem with AUR whatsoever, just wondered about solution to the "notification about updates" problem.

  • Basic airport question

I have very basic question: I connect to my home network wirelessly with a linksys router and cable modem. But the speed is very slow. If I turn off airport and connect to the router, the connection is about twice as fast as using airport. I've had my mac about two years, and maybe I need to update the software or hard ware, but don't know what I need.
When I looked online at the support page, it showed actual hardware (looked like white routers, I guess), which I don't have. I presume I have the airport card, but I don't have a separate apple hardware thing like was shown on the apple site. so I don't really know WHAT I have. When I looked at the version on my airport menu, it showed airport version 427.1.1, firmware 429.6.0, extreme driver 405.1.0, admin util 420.31.0, setup 420.17.0
    Can anybody help me?
    Thanks, pat

With wireless, is it's hard to troubleshoot air. If your wireless connection is slower than your wired connection, I'd suggest starting with the router. How old is it? Is it possible that it is only 802.11b compliant? If so, you can get a new one that is 802.11g or even 11.n. now as the prices are dropping on those. I would log into it anyway and check the settings. If 802.11g is available and not selected, change it.
Are you in close range of the router when you are using wireless? Are other wireless devices connecting simultaneously? I guess it could be possible that wired takes priority over wireless in terms of how routers work, but I really don't have any idea. Maybe someone else knows about that. But as always with anything that isn't acting up to par, I would repair permissions, repair hard drive, (I don't even bother to verify, just repair) and if that doesn't fix it, then create a new user account, log in to it and compare with your regular user account.
Also the white hardware you saw on the support site, is either the airport extreme base station or express base station, which essentially is a router with print sharing and music sharing. To my knowledge, it has no firewall built in and costs way more than a plain wireless router which is easier to set up. In other words, you don't need one for your wireless connection.

  • Open DNS & Airport Question

I have a wireless network (Airport Extreme and Airport Express for range in the back of my house). Have 4 Macs on the network. All have Open DNS set in System Prefs>Network>Airport>Advanced>DNS.
Should I set one or both of the Airports to Open DNS also? If so, how? I looked at Airport Utility and see no ready way to do it.
If I should add OPen DNS to Airport, can someone tell me how in an easy to follow fashion?
    Thanks in advance!

    No, sorry.
All my machines are individually set for Open DNS: System Prefs>Network>Airport>Advanced>DNS: 208.67.222.222; 208.67.220.220.
The machines have been set this way for a long time.
My Q: Can/Should I set my Airports (Express and Extreme) somehow for Open DNS?
    My general configuration is:Cable>Modem>Airport>4 Macs.
The hardware configuration is Cable into Router (Cox), Ethernet into Extreme, broadcast to Express 5 rooms away (to serve 2 of the 4 Macs); Ch 1 all.
Perfect connection - so don't want to mess with that.
Just want to know (if I can to speed up download time) --
Would (if possible) setting the Airport settings to Open DNS help my speed? If so, how in the world would one do that - - > set the actual base station to have Open DNS settings?
    Make sense? Hope so!
    Thanks!

  • Airport question

I am trying to get my airport connection to work using OS9. I believe that the model is an iMac DV 400. I partitioned the hard drive into two partitions. One partition has OS X on it using tiger (10.4.10). With that partition, I have successfully got my airport connection to work. However, when I boot into the OS9 partition and try to setup airport, it doesn't work. First off, when I use the admin utility, it doesn't recognize the base station. I tried re-scanning a few times and it doesn't show it. Then, when I use the airport application, it comes up with two internet connections. One is my base station and other is a router from some other internet connection in the surrounding area. However, when I pick my base station to put the password in with the drop down menu, for some reason, it keeps going to the other internet connection to put the password in after I click my choice. Obviously, when I put in my password for MY base station, it says it is the wrong password. It is very Voodoo to me. Like I said, everything works fine with airport with my other partition. What gives? FYI, I am using 9.2.2. thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi there,
Thank you both for the replies.
I have this setup at work so I won't be able to try what you said until I get back there after labor day.
Just to let you know; the base station is the white one that came after the original gray base station. Also, I am using OS 9.2.2. I am not sure what the airport admin version (or the airport version) of the software is. Again, I would have to check that at work. I have the original airport card in the machine (802.11.a). I am pretty sure that our sercurity is 128-bit. Therefore, the 64-bit WEP would make sense. However, I did have OS 9 connected to the internet before I did the partitioning on my hard drive.
I guess to be continued. However, if any of the information above gives you another POV, please let me know. I still would like some feedback about the voodoo problem I am having with selecting MY network that I mentioned above in the original post.

  • Yes, another Airport question

I am having a common problem (as I have seen from numerous google searches) with my airport card in my Macbook. I am running 10.4.11 on the white macbooks that came out about 3 years ago...My Macbook has been awesome for almost the entire period of time, however, I keep losing my connection with my apple airport wireless router. I tested the connection with another computer and the signal is strong all over the house....I, however, have to be about 5 or 6 feet away from the router in order to receive a strong signal, and even then it fluctuates between 3 and 2 bars.
From searching literally hundreds of posts, I cannot quite find an answer/solution to my problem...I have deduced that I either have a wireless network in the area that is interfering with my network or I just need a new wireless card in my macbook.
I looked up wireless cards on ebay and it seems like I can get one pretty cheap, but I would be very apprehensive to open up the computer and install it, for I would probably screw it up somehow. If I were to buy the card on ebay and schedule an appt. with a genius, do you think they would install it for me...I don't mind paying. My appleCare warrantee has expired long ago...so, I am not sure if they would even consider helping me.
Also, I have seen that I could update my OS from Tiger to Snow Leopard, but I don't want to do that if it is not necessary. I have made sure that I have the latest firmware updates and everything and it seems all up to date.
If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks, in advance, for even reading this rambling diatribe...

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you take your laptop to the coffee place or other location and can connect with no problems, your wireless card is fine. If you continue to have connection problems, it may be that wireless card is in need of replacement.
Have you downloaded a utility like iStumbler, www.istumbler.net to get a look at the signal strength and noise on your network? The bars at the top of the screen are not a very good indicator of the actual signal on your network and tell you nothing about the quality of the signal.
Look for other networks in your vicinity and note in particular what channel your wireless is operating on. There may be other networks on the same channel or adjacent channels that are interfering with your network. Cordless phones and security systems at the neighbors can also cause problems with any wireless network. Most modern routers allow their users to create "hidden" networks that can't be seen but cause problems nonetheless. Not much you do about that.
AirPort Utility will allow you to change the channel on your wireless network if you suspect this may help matters. You may need to experiment with a number of different settings to find the best compromise, particularly if you are in an area with a number of networks.

  • Resolution, audio, alpha channel, and backup questions (newbie)

    Hello!
Well, after a few weeks of fidgeting around with FCE, I've come up with quite a few questions:
    Image/Audio questions
    A. What is the best still image size for import to a NTSC DV movie? Is it the 720x480 px (3:2 aspect ratio) standard of the DV image, or the 4:3 ratio of your generic CRT TV?
I know it depends on pan/zoom. This brings up the next question:
    B. I have a still image - literally a blue and black two-color image - that I'd like to zoom. It will start out with a very close shot - and zoom out until it takes up around 10% of the screen. The ending frame (the DV size) will be about 10-12 times smaller than the original image. Does this mean that I should make the original 10-12 times bigger (in both directions) than a DV frame?
This clip is essentially an imitation of the opening of the movie "Home Alone", where the screen begins blue, and as it zooms out, you see it's a stylized house, which zooms out to a tiny size. That's essentially the effect I'm going for.
    Audio/Video sync issue
    C. Some of the clips I've imported from old iMovie projects are a little out of sync. It's not a conversion issue, but an issue with bad editing on my part . So, I have a still image that's about 1.5 seconds too short - it cuts to the next still, which is 1.5 seconds too long. I've added edit points at both ends of the out-of-sync clip, so that I have a 1.5 second clip, with its own audio and video.
The problem is that the audio is perfect, but the video is bad. So, I need to replace the video, without changing the audio. How is this done?
    D. Sometimes, I'll end up with either audio or video that's not quite right after importing a movie. However, FCE locks them together. Is there a way to unlock them so that I can change either? Essentially, is there a way to change the audio and video from one clip into two seperate clips?
    E. Can I export a single clip or two only? (eg - the same as the "Share selected clips only" check box the iMovie's share menu)
    Alpha channel/marquee question:
In one idea I had for this short, I have a still image (and some video) where I'd like to highlight a small area in one part of the image. In one part, it's a small object in the background that I'm highlighting. If you've seen a documentary where they have a group photo, and highlight the face of one particular person, that's the effect I'm going for.
I've made some Photoshop images that can achieve this effect - using a transparent background, a black top layer (at ~40-80% opacity), and an eliptical marquee for the highlighted portion. I then import it, and fine tune the location/size. It works, but it takes a lot of time to talor each shot. Is there some way to do this IN Final Cut Express? A filter perhaps?
    In addition: (alpha-video)
is there a way to turn part of a video into an alpha channel, so that it's transparent in the final movie? It's not so much a solid color (as the bluescreen/chroma key technique would need), but more of background. For example, I would like to take some footage of my family walking in front of trees, remove the background, and place an entirely different video/still in. Is that possible?
    Backup: FInal question:
I have my source media organized fairly well on my external drive. However, if my drive should die, It would be incredibly tedius to re-link all the files. (I do have a fairly current backup of the external files). Not to mention finding the orignal capture files, re-timing the project, and so on. The project file itself is probably the easiest to back up.
So, how do you back up EVERYTHING? Some projects may have hundreds of files, all over my external drive. Is there some easy way to back up all the files into a single place, like a single folder or DVD, so that if my drive should fail, all the files are in one spot?
I can export them back to a miniDV tape, but I don't have that many, plus they're $5 a pop. I can do this with Toast, but I'll likely end up missing some out-of-the-way files. If only .Mac's Backup had a Final Cut preset.....
I know that's a BUNCH of stuff up there, so if you can help with any of them, i'd be appreciative.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

  • Bridge gallery and iWeb questions, newbie....

    Hi All....
I have made myselve a page in iWeb but I´m not happy with the gallery-layout with thumpnails and small sized pictures, I would like my galleries to be scroll down type, OR just one picture at the time and nothing else, except "Next/previous" and a "Menu" sign, either in a good (>>>big pictures) size....
I have this morning realized that I can do that in Bridge, so I have made myselve a testgallery and uploaded to my site via Bridge, and I can see in Filezilla that it is there, but I can´t see it on my page, off course because there´s no link between the two of them, the question is, how do I make my page show the gallery....???
I haven´t been able to locate the testgallery on the web, as mentioned I can see in Filezilla that it is there somewhere, but how to find it out there I don´t know....
My homepage is called www.easerfoto.dk and the gallery I have oploaded is called Bridgegallerytest, if it has any relevance....
If anyone have a page that is made in Bridge and care to share how´s, then please step forward, I´m on zero here, any tip is appreciated....;-)
Maybe I should mention that I am an complete NOOB on all this (managed to have Filezilla working first time last week), but want to learn....
    Bjarke

When you created your gallery did you publish the file to a folder?  And was one of the files in that folder named index.htm or html?  Make sure the gallery works correctly by opening the index.html file with your browser from the gallery copy on your hard drive.
Then upload to the root directory of your account on the server.  The url would be something like this:  http://www.easerfoto.dk/Folder_name/index.html.
Put that URL in the iFrame code below in an HTML snippet. The iFrame code in the snippet would look like this:
    <iframe height="XXXpx" allowTransparency="true" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" style="width:XXXpx;border:none" src=" http://www.easerfoto.dk/Folder_name/index.html"></iframe>
Adjust the height and width dimensions to fit the size of the gallery you want on the page.
Also for what it's worth there are other gallery types of presentations, some from iPhoto with a free plugin, that might be of interest to you:

  • IBook vs. iMac, and Airport Questions

    Hi everybody,
After the announcement of the new iMac, I am seriously considering buying an iMac. However, I have a few questions, is the G5 alot more powerful than the G4? because the .48 Ghz difference, as a PC user, doesn't mean that much to me. I am a teenager, I do enjoy my games, but also want something that I can be productive on. I make web sites and do graphic editing with photoshop. However, I do not have the funds to spring for a powerbook or powermac, so I have the choice of the iBook or the iMac. I need to know what would be more useful for me, I do not need too much portability, but does the portability outweigh the extra .48 ghz, or is that .48 Ghz actually a significant difference? And my last question is: Is the wireless card in both computers compatible with any wireless router, or only an apple one?
P.S. based on my computer listed below, you can see I am due for an upgrade
    Thanks,
    Myrdog

I am the proud owner of an iMac G5 and an iBook G4 and I can tell you that the iBook G4 is a very sturdy and reliable computer. In terms of power, the iBook G4 is a bit limited on RAM specs if you are working with Adobe Creative Suite, for example, and needed to open several apps at once. Or if you are editing video; in that case the iBook works fine but there can be some problems because the graphics card in the iBook is much less powerful than the iMac's graphics card. One more thing about the new iMac G5: it uses DDR2 533 SDRAM, which is faster per megabyte/gigabyte. You will pay a lot for maxing out RAM though.
Either choice would be a good one; it really depends on your budget and what you want to do with it. I use my iBook to do web design with Macromedia Studio 8, and the programs run quite well. For most purposes, the iBook shines.

  • Modem and Airport question....

    Hi!
    Everyone know Macbook have airport...
So i have a modem ethernet Netgrear.
I don' t want to buy a router because i don' t want 2 wireless hotspots (my macbook is already a wireless hotspot thanks airport)
Is there a way to find a kind of ethernet wireless key (so i can connect ONLY my macbook to my modem wireless) and connect all pcs and macbook in my house to my mac using my airport?
    Thanks in advance...

    Alberto Ravasio wrote:
But if you feel comfortable with your decision, you already have everythig you need.
Plug the ethernet cord from your ethernet modem into MacBook's ethernet port.
That sort of defeats the original idea that the MacBook could be moved around like a mobile HotSpot.
In any case it does sound like the original poster is overthinking this. Wireless routers are extremely cheap these days (I paid US$50 for a D-Link 802.11n wireless router), and keeping a MacBook always active (no sleep or shutdown) to serve as a wireless HotSpot is a new idea to me.
I don't know of anything that would plug into an ethernet port as a "dongle" like a "USB key". Like I said, I don't know if there would be power. Even cable/DSL modems with USB ports usually have the "B" connector. I haven't heard of any type of dongle that plugs into a USB B port - and it wouldn't be powered anyways.
