Airport reception yoyo and istumbler crazy fix?!!

My airport reception goes up and down to a hunt randomly. I installed a clean system thinking its a software issue, but same same, my ibook functions flawlessly.... THE WEIRDEST THING, when I launch istumbler the connection is sustained, NO drop outs, No strange behaviors and the signal is clean?!!
So, is it the software, or the hardware here, I am so lost in this?

also, to make things a little more weird, my Iphone connects to the same wifi connection and gets full strength, so that just adds to the confusion.

  • Weak and erratic airport reception

After years of great reception at my office and home, I'm having serious issues with weak reception. These issues seemed to surface after I've upgraded to Leopard. Any reason for that?
at my office, the router hasn't changed and my desk location hasn't changed. I used to get almost full reception, but even iStumbler says I have about 15 to 20% reception.
right now, I'm about 8ft from my router at home and I go between one and four bars erratically, mostly staying at two bars. what's up? is it possible my antenna has been disconnected? could it be a software issue?
    thanks

would you recommend going back to Tiger temporarily to see if that fixes the issue?
thanks for your help on this,

You might consider installing a WiFi "sniffer" such as istumbler
    http://www.istumbler.net/
and checking the signal levels before making any major OS changes.
Also create a new user account and see if the problem exists with the new user account.
What OS/version is your wife using?
I just read your latest post. I did not think it was an OS problem - it rarely is but it's certainly easy to blame it
It's just possible that your wife's computer is more sensitive than is yours. Try changing channels on the WiFi router and see if that helps. Also be sure no large metallic plates or such are near your computer, possibly blocking the signal.

  • How do I open ports on my airport extreme and assign a fixed IP Address for a device connected to my network?

I recently had a security system installed in my house.  One of the features is an EPAD which enables me to have a virtual keypad on my iphone, and computer to operate the alarm system.  The technician was not familiar with Mac's and Airports.  How do I open port 80 to 80 in my airport and assign a fixed IP address for the EPAD?  Apparently this is what is needed to make this work.

There are three ranges of "strictly local" IP addresses reserved for local Network use:
    192.168.xxx.yyy
    172.16.xxx.yyy
    10.xxx.yyy.zzz
What your Router does for you is to act as your agent on the Internet.Your requests are packaged up and forwarded on your behalf, and only when a response is expected is the response returned to your local IP address.
Directing Network Traffic to a Specific Computer on Your
    Network (Port Mapping)
AirPort Extreme uses Network Address Translation (NAT) to share a single IP address with the computers that join the AirPort Extreme network. To provide Internet access to several computers with one IP address, NAT assigns private IP addresses to each computer on the AirPort Extreme network, and then matches these addresses with port numbers. The wireless device creates a port-to-private IP address table entry when a computer on your AirPort (private) network sends a request for information to the Internet.
If you’re using a web, AppleShare, or FTP server on your AirPort Extreme network, other computers initiate communication with your server. Because the Apple wireless device has no table entries for these requests, it has no way of directing the information to the appropriate computer on your AirPort network.
To ensure that requests are properly routed to your web, AppleShare, or FTP server, you need to establish a permanent IP address for your server and provide inbound port mapping information to your Apple wireless device.
To set up inbound port mapping:
    1) Open AirPort Utility, select your wireless device, and then choose Base Station > Manual Setup, or double-click the device icon to open its configuration in a separate window. Enter the password if necessary.
    2) Click the Advanced button, and then click Port Mapping.
    3) Click the Add button and choose a service, such as Personal File Sharing, from the Service pop-up menu.

  • Sudden and severe loss in AirPort reception

I use my TiBook at my desk (12 feet from wireless router) and on my couch (9 feet from wireless router). AirPort reception has been very strong (always five bars) for more than two years in these locations. I was even getting good, consistent reception throughout my entire condo. I have moved/added no furniture nor any other possible sources of interference.
Suddenly, reception is severely fluctuating and impacting network communications. I am never getting five bars, now. Reception varies wildly and quickly: 15 seconds of four bars, followed by 10 seconds of no network connection, followed by 20 seconds of two bars, etc. This continues even if nothing changes—for example, if I step away from the TiBook and watch the screen from several feet away.
I have tried the following without results: reseating the AirPort card and confirming the antenna is securely attached, pressing against the inside of the battery compartment to reseat one antenna, rebooting the machine (several times), small adjustments to the router antennae, subtle repositioning of the router, reseting the router, setting wireless communications from G to the supposedly more stable B, trying several channels other than the default channel 10. Nothing helps.
I have been reading about connectivity issues, but nothing suggests I should be having AirPort troubles when only 9 feet away from the router! I have run out of ideas. What am I missing?
    J.

And another afterthought: I just picked up on rereading your post that you live in a condo. That suggests the possibility that someone in an adjacent or nearby unit may have installed something new in their unit that has caused increased interference for you. You obviously have no control over that — perhaps not even the ability to discover whether it's true. If you can't find any indication that either your router or your Airport card is malfunctioning, you may need to switch to using a wired connection, inconvenient as it may seem.
In my own home (which is several hundred feet from any external interference source), I was stymied for a long time by limited wireless range to distant parts of the house, porch, deck, etc., and I couldn't face having to run ethernet cables all through my existing walls. I solved the problem with two of these ($48 for the pair, shipping included, on Ebay). They work extremely well in my situation, but they might be vulnerable to power line noise in yours; I don't know for sure. Of course if you only use your Powerbook in the same room with your router, using a simple patch cable to connect them wouldn't be much of an inconvenience compared to having your connection dropped unpredictably.

  • Bad Airport reception and resetting SMC problem

    Hi,
I still have the bad Airport reception problem (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1088230&tstart=0).
I did a complete new erase and install with the discs I got with the computer (10.4.10). When I arrived in the Finder, Airport was completely gone. Nothing to see in the menu bar, nothing in SysPrefs, nothing in System Profiler.
I reset the SMC (shut down, remove power, remove battery, hold power key for 5 secs, install battery, connect to power, boot without pushing any keys). Now I got Airport back, although with the same bad reception.
As a bonus, I now have 2 extra problems:
    - when the computer goes to sleep after some idle time, it wakes up again within the second
    - rebooting gives me a black screen, no chime, caps key light doesn't work, sleep light is on but not flashing, hard drive is still spinning. Only option: hold the power key for several seconds until it shut downs and boot it again.
And by the way: all this after the Airport card has been replaced!
Any similar experiences, or even better: solutions?
    Thanks,
    Jef

    Hello,
I just received my MBP and I can't believe apple could keep ignoring this serious problem. I have a Dlink router and it works terrific with an old sony vaio but not with my brand new Mac!!! Actually my Airport detect several of the wireless networks around home including mine, but the signal indicator remains gray and the message:"there was an error joining the AirPort network "XXXXX" " is shown. What the **** are they doing at Apple? I use to be very confident about the quality of Macs but now ... Please Apple, stop being so arrogant and respect your costumers!!!! Provide a solution

  • Poor Airport Reception in MBP

I just bought the 15" 2.16 GHZ MacBook Pro 2 days ago and have notcied the airport reception is flaky. When I am 2 rooms away from my router, I get 4/5 bars and then when I go downstairs, it fluctualtes from 1 bar to 4 bars - very inconsistent.
This never used to happen with my titanium nor does this happen with my Dad's iBook or Sony Vaio.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Should I take it back to the store?
    Thanks.
    Macbook Pro 15" 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have genuine Airport Signal issues with my MacBook Pro, when sitting with the laptop IN CONTACT WITH the airport base station I can't get more than 75% signal, with it 2 feet away I'm at 50%, much more than 5 feet and I'm down to 20% and dropping signal regularly. Through walls? Not a chance.
Obviously, this is not normal behavior for a MacBook Pro, so I will be taking it in to the apple store - I just know that they are gonna ship it back to apple, and I don't want to be without my machine for a week, so I haven't quite got around to it yet.
I have tried multiple apple-branded airports, including the extreme and express I both own and severals others, as well as multiple 3rd party base stations. Signals and connection stability have been unusably poor in all cases.
I have ran all the latest software updates and firmware patches, and have wiped the hard drive and re-installed the entire system from scratch. No change.
I haven't found many other people complaining of similar problems, so I suspect I'm just unlucky. On the other hand, perhaps my antenna isn't plugged in or something simple. Even if that was the case, I doubt that the apple store itself would fix it so I gear up for shipment back to apple.
    Sigh.

  • Airport reception compared to titanium powerbook

    hi
just wondering if the aluminium powerbooks have better airport reception than the titanium model, as i currently have the 500mhz model and the reception is really bad compared to the ibook i used to have.
    thanks andy

I never had any issues with my 17" Powerbook. I would say that your chances of having problems with Aluminum or plastic are about even with Titanium. The issue is not so much the material, as the potential for corrupt preferences, and problems of casing blocking some of the signal getting in that an external antenna could fix. Amazingly, you'll find the iMac Intel Core2duo is having airport problems, on this board:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3694890#3694890
But as you see, I have the ability to receive 5 more networks with my iMac Intel Core2duo than I did before with my other Macs. Suffice it to say your mileage may vary by machine, not by model.

  • Poor MacBook Pro Airport reception?

Just upgraded from a 12 inch PowerBook to new 15 inch MacBook Pro - and my Airport signal strength has crashed as a result. Compared to the PowerBook reception is now so poor that I often have trouble connecting to the Internet at all. Signal strength showing on MacStumbler with the PB was generally about 75, it's now (using iStumbler on the MBP, because it's a Universal app) at 50. Is this a known issue with the MacBooks, and is there any solution? Or could it even be a problem with the specific airport card that's installed in the MacBook?

    Hi,
I am having the same issue with my iBook G4, it has terrible airport reception, however I am using an airport extreme card which I installed about 2 years back when I got the iBook.
My boyfriend gets excellent reception on his (PC) laptop but using MacStumbler signal strength is only about 25-35 on my iBook.
    Other factors:
The reception is just as bad for me on other networks (for example at my boyfriends house I have to virtually sit on top of the router to get reception and even then its dodgy and drops out all the time.
I have removed the Aiport Extreme card, cleaned it and put it back in and re-connected the ariel cable.
I have downloaded the latest software updates.
I have 2 routers (in a 1 bedroom flat!!!) I thought this might improve things, so I have a Belkin (I think) wireless modem/router in the hall AND an Airport Extreme base station in the living room acting as a bridge. Not a great deal of improvement was seen.
I have an iMac G4 in the living room also and the reception on that is fantastic.
Can anyone help or have any suggestions?

  • Wreched airport reception:  Resolution?

Ok, since the Wretched Airport Reception thread is now 435 posts long, it's getting hard to waid through. Bottom line, what is the resolution at this point?
    Link to thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=387407&tstart=0

Well, unlike those of us on the other side of the Atlantic, where consumer rights tend to be rather limited, you, in the UK, have the law to protect you and provide at least some route to have the problem resolved.
UK law requires that when something is sold by a retailer, it must be of merchantable quality, be fit for purpose and do what it is supposed to do. In this instance, since Airport is fitted to the mini by Apple as a standard component, the law requires that it work so that you, the consumer, can take advantage of the equipment you have paid for. Many people get told things like "it's just one of those things", but it is not.
Basically, since Apple advertise the fact that the Mac mini has Airport, you, the consumer, have a right to have Airport working, and if it isn't, you have a right to require it to be fixed, or for your money back, or to have the faulty item replaced. (Note that if you accept repair in the first instance, you cannot then require other actions later).
The Sale of Goods Act gives you redress, not against the manufacturer because otherwise they and the retailer would just bat you back and forth between them until you give up, but against the retailer who sold you the item. Your claim is therefore against them.
I would suggest that you contact the vendor again and state that the problem is not resolved and shows no sign of being resolved, and ask that they make a clear statement to you of their intentions regarding ensuring that you have a product which is fit for purpose. If they try and fob you off with claims that Apple are difficult to deal with in getting faults sorted out, tell them that even if true, that's their problem, not yours. If they don't offer a replacement or a refund (they can't require you to accept a store credit note or anything that ties you to repurchase from them), note down what they say, ask with whom you are speaking and note that. Tell them that you have no alternative than to refer the matter to Trading Standards since you are not satisfied with the outcome and have a system which has cost you the same as everyone else's but has a fundamental defect. If that threat doesn't work (and it often does) then contact the Trading Standards office in your area and discuss the case. They can and should take the matter up on your behalf with the vendor, and they will not be at all likely to accept excuses, nor give any credence to the supposition that 'difficult' manufacturer service has any part to play in resolving the matter for you. That's the vendors problem, not yours.... and is not particularly true in any event as far as Apple is concerned.
Customers DO deserve to get what they pay for, and the law in the UK is intended to ensure that it happens.

  • Airport Reception

I have been tempted to upgrade from my 5 month-old iBook G4 to a Powerbook 15" (refurbished unit), but I'm always stopped by reports of lousy Airport reception. Is it an established fact that PBooks get worse wireless than iBooks..or is it just Apple legend? Are there any PBook users out there with positive (at least as good as iBook) Airport experiences?

I have a hard time believing the problem MOST of us experience is due to a loose AP card. A loose AP card doesn't suddenly heal/reseat itself with a machine restart.
It seems that the only successful fixes for this problem in the last 15" PBs are:
    1) Repair Permissions (I'm joking here, it worked for one guy; I've tried it countless times with no luck whatsoever)
    2) Another AP base station installed in the home. (Another joke.) This one sounds like it was as much of a signal issue as anything else. That is, the home it was in sounded too big for adequate AP reception with only one BS.
    3) Restart your machine. Which does work like a charm, but is not what was advertised by Apple in PB ads. Not even in tiny legal type hidden somewhere.
SO...that leaves us all with only one recourse (actually two, but hopefully the first will be all that's necessary): to constantly call Apple and complain in a firm but civil manner until this issue is resolved. We might have better luck going through Customer Relations. They can be accessed via the regular help line; you just have to ask a person to connect you with that department.
I think a good idea would be to tell the reps that there are multitudes of 15" last-gen PB owners experiencing this same problem (as evidenced by Apple's own boards right here) and we want to know what Apple is doing to address it...or if we need to pursue "other avenues" to get the problem rectified.
It might be warranted to call them oh, let's see...whenever the problem occurs. Or some close variation of that. For me, that would be literally almost every single day. PITA. But if enough of us do it and raise enough of a stink, my guess is they'll realize it will cost them more NOT to address it than to ignore it. As it stands, this lack of ANY official response is simply unacceptable.
The help line is 1-800-SOS-APPL. Dial early and often, people.

You don't in the condition it's in. You will either have to get the phone replaced by Apple or pay a 3rd party to repair it.
there seriously should be more than two ways to solve this other wise apple is useless and we will never buy another apple product.
    Seriously? It's physically broken!

  • Airport Internet Sharing and Double Nat Issue on the road

The Airport express is a very handy little piece of hardware that is particularly easy to pack in a luggage and carry along for those of us that are spending lots of time out of the office and home.
So here is the scenario when I travel and check in into an overseas hotel: I got two iphones, one local network, one my home network, and a Mac Book Pro, and soon, [when it finally ships], an iPad.
That makes it at least 3 MAC addresses in one room, and if i have any visiting colleagues to pack up a presentation, I will have more.
Usually hotels in Asia are well equipped with ethernet points in every room. The problem comes when I want to allow all my gears to connect to the internet.
I can use the Mac Book to share its ethernet connection while tethered to the plug, which not only turns it into an unlikely desktop, but also do not champion stability when it goes in stand by or sleeps and at times it even mixes up which is the access point to the net. Therefore this does not seem to be the best solution.
I can put the AE in bridge mode and plug it straight to the ethernet. But most hotels internet access are designed to charge per MAC address, so every time the router assigns via DHCP an IP to one of my gears it requires to accept new charges for that gear, even if they are all in the same room. This definitely does not seem right either.
Now if I configure the AE to share a public IP address and force it to ignore the double NAT warning, the AE light turns green but the internet sharing does not seem to work at all.
    My two questions are:
    1) Why can't the AE be configured like the Mac Book to have a simple "Internet Sharing" protocol that will be always live and not going to sleep or stand by like the laptop [As the AE is design to be always online as a wireless connection].
    2) is there any way to make that "Share a public IP - *** double NAT" work?
    Any feedback is welcome.
    Thanks. M

    Hi Bob,
thanks for your reply. Yes the only way to work it out on a typical hotel set up is to adopt the bridge mode and sometime the do waive your extra logs in. But I am not always so lucky and I often need to come up with less optimal solution.
This is a bit disappointing when you a have a AE in your luggage and you can't use it properly.
Yet my Mac can work the problem out effortlessly by just "Sharing a internet connection" with the only major limitation of being physically connected to the Ethernet cable.
Why can't the Airport Express do the same thing? Basically the AE could share the internet connection like the Mac Book, i guess introducing a secondary layer of NAT after the Hotel modem/router NAT setup [which is what the MAC Book is doing].
If AE can't do that at all then I guess soon we will just end up shelving it.
I wonder if this is an actual hardware limitation, MAC Book can wire TCP/IP flow to different sources on a double nat and AE can't, or this is just a software limitation and Apple could fix it with a firmware upgrade.
    Any thoughts on this?

  • Airport extreme network and bizarre issue...

Thanks for any and all help but let's start with the setup...
Airport Extreme (dual band) is my main station connected to the modem and also to an imac (wired).
Two airport expresses both using the extend wireless network option
Exp. 1 is connected to the TV through ethernet
Exp. 2 extends wireless network. Used to extend wireless connection to the outside
Now here is my issue. Up until last week my main station was a first generation airport extreme n (fast ethernet).
I tried to add access to the bottom floor with this station and hook up an old pc (no wireless card) to it with ethernet. This works without a problem with an airport express but NOT with the bigger brother...
It will work for about fifty odd seconds (internet and everything), it even has a green light, then boom loses the connection for about 30 seconds (blinking orange). Then back to green... This over and over again. I reset it a couple of times, have even tried to change the firmware to no benefit. I thought maybe it had a reception issue and moved it next to the new main station. Same problem...
    Any ideas?
Years ago, I did try to setup a WDS and failed miserably and would like to skip the experience. Are they easier and is that the way to go? If yes, can a relay station (the exp. 1) still send data to the tv through the ethernet port?
Thanks for any and all help.

  • XBOX ONE. I have the xbox one and the airport time capsule and cant connect to most xbox live games and zero parties. I have 0 experience in all this but somehow was able to change NAT to open but still wont connect. HELLLPPPP

Okay folks, I need your help out there.
So the nerdy side of me went and picked up the XBOX ONE on release day. Its awesome by the way, BUT..... I cant seem to connect to most xbox live games and absolutely ZERO parties. At first I just thought it was something to do with the xbox itself and would eventually fix itself, but i was wrong. After looking into it on microsoft, i found out that it had to do with my NAT settings on the airport itself. I guess apple and xbox are not compatiable for xbox live and it makes it difficult to have an open NAT setting and is a huge PAIN.
I was able to pinpoint one that the airport time capsule was blocking the IPV6 something or another. Anyways, I unblocked that, and reset the modem and time capsule and jumped on the xbox and now have open NAT settings but still cant connect to multi-player.
Upon further searching, i was told to uncheck the UPNP on my time capsule as well, but have no idea how to find that.
I know it seems confusing, but thats the best i can describe it.
    tthanks all

Be a long long time before I see an Xbox One.. but whoever told you to uncheck the upnp in the TC.. tell them their dreamin' .. upnp is not support by Apple in any computer or router, never has been.. Apple deliberately wrote their own version called NAT-PMP to do the same thing.. dynamically open ports at the request of an application or client computer.
So there is nothing like that to uncheck.. and as a matter of interest.. there no box to check or uncheck for NAT-PMP either.. since apple do not believe in end user adjustment of settings.. they simply do not exist.
You will have to manually forward all ports required by the Xbox via the TC. For multi-player games you probably need to open more ports than the standard to allow just xbox live. You will need to check the ports required and open them.
    OR
Buy a standard vista UPNP compatible router.. and use that.. and simply put the TC in bridge in the network.
I have not seen posts yet about xbox one.. but there are plenty about xbox and ps3 and the fact that Apple really doesn't give a hoot about games consoles.
This is a good basic post for older xbox.
