Airport Resetting Issue

Hi, I work at a apple care center on a university campus.
I have noticed an issue that has popped up since the last update of Leopard.
The issue involves a user doing a few things: having their computer sleep when connected to a airport connection, going from one airport connection to another, or dipping out of a connection hotspot and then back into it.
This is what happens, the airport signal shows that there is a connection but any web browser will not connect (any, firefox, safari, ie, etc.) It looks like airport is working, but once a browser is open the airport status switches to "searching" I believe.
I've manually turned off airport and gone in and reset the connection, but it still doesn't work.
So far there has only been one remedy - resetting the computer, and it works.
That said, has there been any other users that have noticed this update bug? I've been receiving a plethora of complaints that are of this issue.
Thanks,
ne0tr0pic

It sounds like the original poster is having issues with DHCP address renewal.
Remember that the Airport icon only indicates a valid association with a Wi-Fi router; I almost guarantee that a user seeing a valid association but unable to contact the Internet has a self-assigned IP address.
There, are, unfortunately some arguments going on (especially between Apple and Cisco) about how machines should behave when renewing DHCP addresses.
This page explains the issue in detail; the issue continues in Mac OS X Leopard:
Some time after obtaining a DHCP lease (entering the DHCP BOUND state), the client sends one or more DHCPDISCOVER packets. This implies the client has returned to the DHCP INIT state, relinquishing the old DHCP lease. In some cases, the client ignores all offers sent in response to the DHCPDISCOVER packet(s), or all those offers never reach the client (e.g. are dropped by the network). However, instead of remaining in the DHCP INIT state, the client continues to act as if the old DHCP lease is still in the BOUND state. It keeps using the IP address from the old lease (even trying to RENEW and later REBIND the old lease).
Because other DHCP clients may be leased the IP address after the first client relinquishes its lease on the address, the first client's continued use of that IP address interferes with service to those other clients.
I can positively confirm that the problem began no later than September 2005. At that time, Mac OS X 10.4.2 was the latest version of the OS available. Prior to then, I did not see the Mac OS X clients here exhibit this problem. Based on that, I believe the issue was introduced into Mac OS X in version 10.4.2 or earlier. Given that 10.4 was released in late April 2005, and the usage at our institution would tend to make it difficult to notice over the Summer (when most of our customers are away), I can imagine the problem may have been introduced as far back as version 10.4 or 10.4.1.
At Princeton, the problem has slowly grown from a rare occurence to a frequent problem. That's due to the growth in number of Mac OS X 10.4.x systems at our site, and due to the higher DHCP lease churn rate for each client (associated with the increasing use of wireless laptops that connect and disconnect often). At first I detected only a few incidents per month throughout our entire institution; by now I generally see several each day.
In many of these cases, our support staff have examined the malfunctioning Macs, and found no apparent problems. The devices appeared to be properly configured to use DHCP, with no special circumstances. (E.g. there was no second device forging the first one's hardware address or DHCP Client Identifier, no VM software running a separate DHCP client instance, no use of Apple's (or a third party) NAT software. There was nothing to indicate that there was a second DHCP client instance running using the same DHCP Client Identifier on the same network. It really appeared to be just simple Mac OS X DHCP clients, running current (at the time) versions of 10.4.x.)
After exhibiting the malfunction, the device may go weeks or months before exhibiting the malfunction (stealing an IP address) again...or it may happen again a few hours later. I know of no way to force any one device to reproduce the problem; I only am able to detect the problem the day after the fact, when I see "stolen IP address" problems by reviewing daily logs of unexpected DHCP server transactions and comparing them to IP usage data drawn from router ARP cache snapshots.
Apple's Take:
Apple has indicated to me that the Mac OS X DHCP client may indeed transition directly from the DHCP INIT state to the DHCP BOUND state.
The situation they describe is:
a) A client is in the DHCP BOUND state.
b) The DHCP client enters the INIT-REBOOT state, e.g. as a result of a sleep/wake cycle or link state change.
c) The DHCP client sends a DHCPREQUEST.
d) The DHCP client receives neither a DHCPACK or DHCPNAK.
(I note that in our case, the DHCPREQUEST may indeed have reached the DHCP server and the DHCP server sent a DHCPACK. Presumably this never reached the client.)
e) Their DHCP client chooses to stop using the old lease, although there is still time remaining on the lease.
(I note that RFC 2131 allows the client to continue using the old lease if it wishes, until the old lease expires.)
Instead, their client chooses to return to the DHCP INIT state.
f) The DHCP client sends a DHCPDISCOVER.
g) The DHCP client does not receive a DHCPOFFER.
(I note that in our case, the DHCPDISCOVER did indeed reach the DHCP servers, and the DHCP servers send DHCPOFFERs to the client. Presumably none of the multiple DHCPOFFERs reached the client (e.g. all are dropped by the network), or the client has gone selectively deaf to just these offers.)
h) The DHCP client sends an ARP request to the IP router that was its default gateway in the old lease. The router responds, and the client receives the response.
i) The DHCP client goes back to the DHCP BOUND state and resumes using the old lease. It will enter RENEWING and REBINDING state as usual.
Summary
Apple's stance is that sending a DHCP client can indeed go back to resume using the old lease; that sending a DHCPDISCOVER doesn't imply that client has abandoned that lease.
I believe that's not right; it appears to me that it is not permitted by the state transition diagram (Figure 5) in RFC 2131. And if what they're doing is DNAv4, RFC 4436 also makes it clear that what their client is doing is wrong.
So I believe that the behavior introduced in the Mac OS X 10.4.x DHCP client is not correct.
If your DHCP server makes use of the DHCPDISCOVER to decide that the old lease identified by (client identifier, subnet) has been abandoned by the client, this client behavior will cause a problem. That's because as far as the server is concerned, the old lease has been abandoned by the client, but the client proceeds to use that IP address. Your server may lease that IP address to another device.
And if you have equipment that monitors DHCP traffic to learn which IP addresses are leased to clients, the conclusions reached by that equipment will not always match that of Mac OS X 10.4.x clients.

  • OS X 10.5.x AirPort Dropout Issue - Problem with Apple

I am posting this as a new topic in the hope that Apple will take urgent action to resolve these AirPort dropout issues with OS X 10.5.x.
Yesterday, I installed setup a new 40GB partition on my firewire drive and installed OS X 10.5.2 (from my original installation dvd) and did all updates (via Software Update) to arrive at an up-to-date OS X 10.5.5. Only stock standard OS X 10.5.5 installed now.
Some interesting observations along the way:
    1. After installing 10.5.2 the AirPort network kept dropping out or stalling.
    2. Installed following updates:
    - AirPort Utility (5.3.2)
    - QuickTime (7.5.5)
    - iLife Support (8.3)
    - iTunes (8.0)
    - Remote Desktop Client Update (3.2.2)
    - Java For Mac OS X 10.5 Update 1 (1.0)
I did not update to OS X 10.5.5 at this time.
    3. Restarted and AirPort network stable and fast.
    4. Ran Software Update again - installed:
    - Front Row Update (2.1.6)
    - Mac OS X Update Combined (10.5.5)
    5. Restarted and AirPort network stable and fast.
    6. Ran Software Update again - all software up to date.
    7. Repaired permissions with Disk Utility.
Everything has been going fine with connections to the internet with Safari - until this morning.
My 'clean' OS X 10.5.5 installation is now suffering from the same AirPort network dropouts - no 3rd party applications installed. Ran OK for a day, but after being shutdown for 5 or 6 hours, the problem arose following startup this morning.
    Conclusion:
    1. AirPort problem with OS X 10.5.x; or
    2. AirPort problem with new 17" MBP; or
    3. Problem with AEB 802.11n (gagabit ethernet); or
    4. Problem with DSL modem or ISP connection.
Comments on item 1 - think I have conclusively eliminated 3rd party software.
Comment on item 2 - no problems indicated by TechTool Delux or TechTool Pro 4; works OK via ethernet connection.
Comment on item 3 - previously did factory reset and textbook setup on AEB. Connection via AEB 802.11g relay and remote work fine.
Comment on item 4 - fact that other computers connect OK and this computer can connect OK via ethernet rules out problems with DSL modem and ISP.
Draw your own conclusions, but I am now certain the problem is clearly with Apple.

    Hello,
    looks same to me.
    the log says:
kernel AirPort: Link Down on en1
kernel unable to collect channel list from hal;(...)
my AEB is just 2 ms away from the MacBookPro, the AEB is brand new.
In the moment I have an ethernet cable going from the router through the house, because the AEB is unrelyable. I used all the tricks people posted and said it would solve the problem, which is not the case for me. Dropouts just continue.
With the old ufo-style extreme there was no problem at all.
So please Airport developers put effort to solve the problem and suffering of users.
    thanks

  • WAD webpage reset issue

    Hi Forum,
I have a requirement wherein a web page selection screen is developed in WAD(with some amount of Javascript involved) for the page transition from the selection screen to the report output. The ideal scenario in this case is once a user selects his selection of specific values in the selection screen and runs the report, it displays the report and the selection screen should remain intact as it is for reselecting different values. The issue occuring here is once the user selects the values and clicks on the Run Report button, the report displays fine but the selection screen resets back to a different kind of a screen(displaying exceptions and few other tabs) wherein the user is not able to reselect other values for rerunning the report. Once the user clicks on the back button then the selection screen displays again wherein the user can enter his selections again. So, ideally we need to prevent the selection screen from resetting itself to the exceptions screen, keeping the screen intact as it was.
If anyone has faced a similar kind of an issue in WAD, any help on this would be extremely appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    SwatsG

    Hi,
    Try the below steps.
open WAD ---> open the Web Template (WT) you want to make changes ---> goto properties of the WT ---> select tab 'web item' ---> try checking or unchecking the below mentioned items in the web item list.
    Forced Variable Screen Display
    Reset variables to Default
    Display same variable only once
    Read Mode for Data
Hope this will help resolve webpage reset issue.

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • S750 - How many people get the power on/off/resetting issue?

How many people get the power on/off/resetting issue?
I've had my S750s for about 6 months, with X-Fi Elite Pro, and has been doing it since.
Any idea on what's the cause? Something to do with the control pod?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
What do you mean exactly? On my side I have power on/off/resetting issue when the speaker are in standby mode (thus red light on the control pod) and when I switch them on via the remote control or the control pod. It makes a strange noise in the subwoofer ("clic"), the red light disappear, then a new noise and the speakers are switched on. The problem is that all volume levels (rear / side / center / sub and main) are reinitialized! I have to configure them each time this problem appears...
I have a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS connected to this speaker system. For me it is related to an electrical problem in the subwoofer like if the voltage was not stable (variations).

  • AirPort Extreme Issues

I am having the hardest time getting my new Airport Extreme to work properly. Or at least me to work properly with it. It was working initially then I configured it the way I like it and started having issues. I reset it to default settings and my computers connect to it and through it. If I go through the Airport setup wizard (give it a network name, WPA2 Personal with key) then my computers can still connect to it, or so they say and so the Airport "Wireless Clients" list says, but they cannot connect to any other computers on the network nor can they connect to the Internet.
The logs are repeating this over and over:
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Deauthenticating with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx (reserved 2).
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Disassociated with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
    Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Associated with station 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
Feb 20 22:13:37 Severity:5 Installed unicast CCMP key for supplicant 00:16:cb:xx:xx:xx
I am going crazy. I am tired so lack of sleep is not helping. Can anyone help me so that I do not have to run my network in an unsecure default mode with my Airport Extreme?
Oh, when I plug into the Airport extreme via ethernet cable, I can access the Internet and other computers just fine. If I unplug the ethernet and just use wireless I can attach to the Airport but no throughput.
    Thanks

Have you tried it with WPA disabled?
Do you have access control enabled/disabled? Disable it if you have it enabled.
Is it configured for a closed network? If so, disable that option.

  • Time Machine disk and Airport Extreme issues

I have a portable USB drive I use as my Time Machine disk. It works great, but only when I manually mount the disk.
I recently got an Airport Extreme, which allows me to mount a disk off of it. So, I figure I'll mount my USB Time Machine disk there so Time Machine backs up hourly.
Well, the first issue I get is that Time Machine tells me the disk isn't properly formatted! Odd, since I've had it configured via the app for backups. I go into preferences to select a disk, and I choose my Time Machine disk. When I next tried to run a backup, it indicated I don't have enough room on the disk, requiring ~106 GB .... almost as if it thought it hadn't done any backups before and was going to run a full one.
I dismounted the drive from the Airport Extreme and hooked it back up locally, and I get the same results within Time Machine.
I also noticed a new file on the root of my Time Machine, with a .sparsebundle extension. Is this related in any way?
Anyway, what can I do, short of a full reset of my Time Machine disk, to get it working through my Airport Extreme?

    Me again ...
I hooked up my USB TM disk again to my Airport Extreme. I don't see it as a mounted drive in my Sidebar. However, I see it under the Devices on my sidebar, under "my" computer, then Time Machine Backups, then a backups.backupdb folder.
To start fresh with TM backups I'll need to erase the drive. From what I see, do I just delete the 'backups.backupdb' folder and its contents?

  • Time Capsule, Sonos, and Airport Utility Issues

I have a new Sonos system that is accessing music on my Time Capsule, to which I copied my whole music folder. It works fine from the handheld controller, however the desktop controller will show the library, but won't show me the Zone Players or allow me to control the system. Can only control from the handheld.
Another problem is while I can access the hard drive on TC, and play music simultaneously on the Sonos, Airport Utility says it can't find any wireless devices (so I can't manually change any settings on the TC), so I can't tinker with its settings and try to get the desktop controller working.
That being said, the Sonos system seems to work wonderfully, main issue seems to be with the computer.
    Anyone have a solution?
    Brett

Thank you for your idea. However, after having imported the setup of the previous TC and having experienced problems, I had already done a factory reset and configured everything from scratch! Without using the profile. So I think we can safely exclude a problem connected with importing the older profile, which was in fact my first idea.
On the other side, I haven't tried your suggestion to give separate names to the 5 and 2,4 GHz wireless signals. I'll try this evening, as a last attempt before sending the TC back to Apple. BTW, I put my old TC back in place, and apart from the fact that the disk is noisy and almost full it works without a glitch. Which makes a software or configuration issue less likely, I believe.

  • Airport Extreme issue with printer

I recently switched to an Airport Extreme to replace my linksys router.   Since then, I am no longer able to find my Epson Artisan 810 printer when I try to install it.  (I'd been printing with it for about a year prior). My PC has no problem with printing and all of my devices are able to find the wireless signal with no issues.   I also added OS X Lion at the same time.   Now  I am unable to print through my Macbook Pro.  Has anyone had similar issues and found a solution.  Thank you!!

I just spent several hours linking an Epson Workforce 600 printer to a new Airport Extreme network. On the printer, I reset the printer to its original settings. It was then recognized by the Epson setup software program.

  • Airport Speed issues after update

Hi, initially my machine was buggy after the update which never happens. I reinstalled from the Apple Site, instead of the software update, and the machine is running a little better. However, my Airport connection speed, using a Time Capsule running off my cable modem,is really slow. Ran permissions, Cocktail, still, not much better. Anyone having these issues and has a fix?
    Thanks,

Hi, I changed channels and that seemed to help a lot. How do you reset Airport Drivers?
    Thanks for your input.
Well quit using the Airport card before trying this!
In the web link I posted earlier (How I fixed my dropping wireless Airport connection problem in Snow Leopard they explain the reset step in thye line:
"* Trash your home directories SystemConfiguration folder and reboot – Remove all files within ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ and reboot your machine. Make sure you delete the proper folder, this is in your home directory"
Then immediately reboot to rebuild those files. Then after the reset re-join you wireless network through System Preferences->Network pane.

  • Airport Express issues sorted and itunes10 airplay working properly!!!

I could not rename my original topic, but I have cut & paste the thread so all can read it, weeks of faffing about is now sorted!
I have been running AX for almost 2 years with out an issue, that's with my router and AE in the living room, about 15 feet and a thin wall, could even join my laptop in my bedroom almost 60 feet away with out issues.
My wireless internet connection keeps dropping out, I can wait for several minutes and it will re join automatically, if I go manual it asks for a password, even though it is saved in my keychain!
I moved the router and AX next to my imac and the issues are still occurring.
I am running 10.6.7, have all updates on AX. run 4GB ram, checked activity monitor, all good.
I am not exactly computer savvy, but I was wondering as my router is a little older (Motorola SBV5121E Cable modem) could it be possible that it may not communicate with the AX since updates?
I plugged ethernet directly into my imac from router and no problems what so ever.
Is it possible to run my imac directly from the router and still set up a wireless network using my imac as the base station? This would then solve the issue as the wireless connection is really only needed for the wife and iphone surfing etc ??
Or can I get a wireless router that enables my imac to plug into it directly and also create a wirless network for my AX's (hopefully x 2) to operate. Any recommendations as to the best wireless router?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Reply from Tesserax
Yes, you could use your iMac as a "software" router, sharing its wired Internet connection to wireless devices (like the iPhone) via its built in AirPort wireless. Apple calls this feature: Internet Sharing.
Here are the basic steps to configure it:
To setup for Internet Sharing (Wired to Wireless):
    Setup the Network
Cable Modem > (Ethernet cable) > [Ethernet port] iMac > (wireless) > iPhone
    Enable Software Firewall - iMac
System Preferences > Security > Firewall
o Block all incoming connections (enabled)
    Enable Internet Sharing - iMac
    System Preferences > Sharing
o Select "Internet Sharing" from the options in the left column
o Share your connection from: Built-in Ethernet
o To computers using: AirPort (checked) (Note: Uncheck all other entries in the list.)
    AirPort Options...
    o Network Name: <anything you want>
    o Channel: Automatic
o Enable encryption (using WEP) (optional)
    o Password: (optional)
    o Confirm Password: (optional)
    o WEP Key Length: (optional)
    o Click OK
    o Select "Internet Sharing" again
o Click "Start" to start Internet Sharing
    o Click Start

    Good Morning Tesserax,
that's fantastic, I now have internet sharing and everything is perfect. My next question is, can I now add my 2 x airport express onto the network to "extend wireless network", and especially have it next to my audio to plug the speakers in for airplay around the entire apartment?
    Thanks in advance,
    Bez
    OK,
I just tried setting up my AX, reset the device, reconfigured to "join a wireless network", waited a few minutes and an error message came up on my screen saying try again. Tried a 2nd time, same problem. Turned airport off on my internet sharing imac, then suddenly the AX went green, set up the other AX and the same scenario. Been playing "airplay" through both AX for 30 mins and happy to report that I no longer have the "drop out" of music that has plagued my configuration for weeks!
I think Tesserax has created a solution for the numerous issues with itunes 10, via the internet sharing proceedure.....
    Yaaaahooooo,
    Cheers Tesserax, you da man!

I have a similar issue. Station has been working with no issues since I purchased in May 2014.  But since last Monday (12/29/14), it just does not connect to the internet at all.  I have it connected via LAN cable from my Comcast router.  Verified the conditions of the LAN cable and the output of the COMCAST router as I plugged to a network switch and works with no other issues.  The 5 GHz signal totally disappeared, and the 2.4 GHz is there but no internet connection.  I use terminal to ping the station and obtain a reply from the station and the router, but no luck obtaining internet via the Apple extreme which is connected to my VOIP phone, my Apple TV, and all my music in the cloud.  Right now had to configure everything to receive the signal from the COMCAST router.  No one at the Apple store knows about this equipment, just IPhone6 jockeys.

  • Airport Express Issues

    Hi
    OS Vista Home Premium.
    AirPort Utility 5.5.1
    Airport Express Model A1084
    Itunes 9.1.1.1.2
I recently switched my ISP from AT & T DSL to AT & T Uverse.
Airport Express(AE) had been behaving perfectly for over 2 years.
I reconfigured my AE for the new router and all was well for 5 days.
Yesterday the wifi network would no longer recognize the AE.
I was able to do a hard reset and reconfigure AE via Ethernet connection.
When AE restarts AirPort Utility is "unable to find your AirPort wireless device after restarting" when still connected via ethernet. It is also unrecognized by the wifi network.
I've tried this multiple times, using Utilities automatic and/or manual setup.
I tried updating the AE firmware as well.
I believe either some aspect of the AE has failed (coincidence?) or there is some type of an issue, possibly their Firewall, with the new router (Cisco 3800HGV-B.
My Airfoil 2.7.6.0 also does not recognize the AE anymore.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

  • Airport transmission issues

Recently both my aiport express and airport extreme seem to have stopped broadcasting. It might be due to age - they're both over 10 years old - anyone know the life expectancy of wireless routers? The airport express diagnostic lights indicate no problem, while the airport extreme starts up fine, but then the transmit light refuses to light. I've tried factory resets on both devices, no luck.
The reason I'm uncertain about them being ready to kick the motherboard is because when I try to run Internet Connect, it crashes with the error report "Internet Connect quit unexpectedly". I had also noticed that before my airport express went radio silent, I couldn't join my network manually, even though I spelled the name of the network correctly and entered the correct password: only the iMac could join automatically when I started it up.
So, any solutions to getting a functioning version of Internet Connect for OS 10.6.8, and is there any other way of testing whether a router is needing a new AE-35 unit?

Reception/interference issues have nothing to do with the operating system, so saying Windows clients don't experience reception/interference issues doesn't help narrow things down.
If for some reason the DHCPACKs aren't getting back to the clients, you'll see continued requests.
What IP address, if any, do the Macs hold while they cannot ping local hosts? The address they're requesting? A self-assigned IP address? A former IP address on the same subnet?
While it's not your particular issue, you may also want to read this article:

  • Nano 3G Freeze\Reset Issues

    Hi,
As i have read on this forum, many people are experiencing recurring resets or freezing of their new ipod nano 3g.
I too am having this problem and neither Apples' or any of your kind suggestions have brought me to a happy resolution.
I've owned several ipods, an appletv, airport and a sweet 23" LCD but i have never so much as looked at the tech support pages so i have no experience with their levels of support.
I am wondering if this poor response to a known issue is typical of Apple.
Based on your collective previous experiences, should i expect Apple to address this issue anytime soon or should i try to reclaim my perfectly good 6gb mini from my brother?
    Cheers,
    Ronnie.

I am going back to my mini. I have had the 8gb Nano 3rd gen for one month. In our family we have had every model right from day one. This one, is awful. It keeps freezing, turns off frequently...does quirky things when synching....I give up.
I had to restore it due to freezing problems..now I can no longer watch the movies I purchased thru Itunes. It won't play movies, but it will play music videos...and I am not getting all my album artwork...just a few on coverflow.
    It makes me ill.

  • New Airport Network - issues with some specific features

    Hello,
I have just changed my wifi system for an Airport Network, with one AirPort Extreme and 2 AirPort Express. The goal was to extend the wifi network to the entire house. Everything is fine, all my computers are able to connect to the network and are able to access the internet. The AirPort Network is connected to the internet with the PPPoE procedure.
The issue is very specific here.
    1. I use Outlook 2007 to handle my e-mails. Since I have shifted to the AirPort Network, Outlook is not able to connect to pop server anymore for 4 of my 5 accounts. Hotmail (pop) is functionning alright but Gmail is blocked !
    2. Windows Update is also unable to connect to the appropriate server.
Maybe there is more but it's all I have noticed so far. I have not changed a single parameter by myself on my computers and both are affected the same way.
I first thought it was a firewall issue but disabling my software firewall (Bullguard) did not change anything. Vista Firewall is not active. Maybe is it the internal firewall of the AirPort Extreme ? But that would not explain why Outlook can send messages (smtp works fine).
Any idea or similar experience ? Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    AdG

Maybe my problem is just bad luck ! I might have shifted to my new network
the wrong day. One day earlier, I would not have seen any difficulty... if this is it.
    Quakes slow cyber connections
By Zhu Shenshen | 2009-8-18 | NEWSPAPER EDITION
SHANGHAI'S international Internet connections slowed significantly yesterday after earthquakes rocked Taiwan and southern Japan. It was unclear last night how long repairs might take. Millions of Chinese Netizens were unable to connect to overseas Websites or use popular online chat tools yesterday afternoon.
About 15 million MSN instant message users in Shanghai and other parts of China were affected as the main servers are in the United States. Connections to most overseas Websites including those run by Yahoo and the New York Times were also clogged.
The chain of events that led to the service disruption had its origin in Typhoon Morakot, which struck Taiwan on August 7 and led to a later breakdown in an undersea telecommunications cable system.
Local Internet traffic was not influenced because transmissions were routed to a backup channel. But that cable failed yesterday near Busan, South Korea, apparently the victim of the earthquakes, according to China Unicom.
The failure affected Asian communications to the US and Europe.
The epicenter of the first quake, which struck at 8:05am yesterday, was about 188 kilometers southeast of Hualien on Taiwan's east coast at a depth of 11km, the island's weather bureau said. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.7.
The second quake, which was centered close to the first at a depth of 20km and struck at 6:10pm, measured 6.1, the Taiwan weather bureau said. It was also felt in Japan's Ishigaki Island.
"We've sent a team to repair the broken cable, but we can't give a detailed timetable for when it will be completed," said Song Guixiang, a public relations official for China Telecom.
The schedule will depend heavily on weather conditions, Song said.
Repairs are handled by a team comprising the carriers that use the cable.
In most cases it takes one to two months to fully repair damaged undersea cables. In the meantime, telecom operators will try to reroute traffic to operating cables and satellite systems.
Domestic Internet connections and international call services were normal yesterday, the carriers said.
