AirPort says 'connected' but Safari says 'not connected to the internet'

I'm stumped.
I just replaced a failed HD. Installed OS from original disk. Airport shows strong signal and says "connected" but when trying to open Safari or check for software updates I receive a 'you're not connected to the internet' message.
Remember I had upgraded to Snow Leopard, so just installed that from disk as well. Same situation with the attempts to wirelessly connect.
Note - all other computers, smart phones, etc in the house can still connect wirelessly. When I connect the MacBook via the ethernet cable, it's fine. Problem is only with wireless connection.
Service is Verizon Fios. Have tried repeatedly restarting the router.
Any other suggestions?

John,
Yes, I've been running Software Update frequently over the last 24 hours (needed to update all the software on that new HD) said there were no updates at last check. However, followed link you provided above and installed the Combo update.
Was hopeful on initial restart after that install, as I rec'd a message to the effect of: "none of your preferred networks are connected". Selected my home network (which was listed and with strong signal), entered password and same result - not connected to the internet.
Took your advice above and returned to "Using DHCP" setting. Inital response was "no ip address" and then after short time, "self assigned ip address" "will not be able to connect to the internet". Tried "renew DHCP lease" and continually receive same result. All very frustrating.
My next step will be to try and connect wirelessly on a friend or family member's network (my local Apple store is a bit far away. Easier for me to visit the ones near my office during the work week).
If I am able to connect on another's network, does that indicate it's an issue with my router?
If I am UNABLE to connect on another's network, does that indicate it's an issue with my laptop?
This is so disappointing - the replacement of the HD was so easy, as was the reinstalling of software. This connection issue is souring what was a relatively painless and quick experience.
Thank you again,
Christine

Airport Exopress light is solid green, but I can not get on the internet.  Does anyone have a suggestion how to fix this?

Would you please provide some more information about your current network so that we can help you? For example, is your AirPort Express the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to a broadband modem or to another router upstream of it? Regardless, what is the make & model of this modem?
When changing network equipment or when setting it up for the first time, it is always a good idea to perform a completer power recycle of your networking equipment. Please check out the following AirPort User Tip for the details.

  • Is there a problem with FaceTime, can not connect. When dial it connects and drops. When friends are calling me they have calling message and I have connecting but it does not connect. Need help, face time is my life line.

Face time not working. When dialled it says connecting and drops immediately. When my friends calling it show connecting but it does not.
Is there a problem with face time. I am in south Africa, it was working perfectly up to Easter. Please help this is my life line.

There is a barely acknowledged issue. For Mac users Apple has released an update to the app, but for iOS users the recommendation is for users to update their ipad to the most recent operating system.
There may be a fix coming for iOS6 users (which seem to be many of those having problems) or there may not be. If your ipad isn't up to date then you can update it and see if that helps, or if you don't want to update then you may want to wait and see if there is either a fix or if it fixes itself.

  • AirPort connected but Safari says buffer space exhausted

    hi.
I just started my MacBook pro and it connects fine to my AirPort Network. But in Safari I can not open any page. It tells me the buffer space is used up nsposixerrordomain:55. Does anyone know what that means and what I can do about it?
    thanks in advance
    Best
    Rob

I had the same issue after I Stopped my Mac from Syncing and Deleting the Mac from the Sync list. I tried everything and ended up reinstalling. I wished I had known of the Cocktail fix before I Clean Installed my OS! On a positive note , after reinstalling everything its seems much snappier after the effort. This was the same debacle I was in when I Upgrade Installed in the first place. A Reinstall with Preserve settings yielded no fix, so I clean Installed no migration and all is well. When I checked my Network Assistance, It had all the Green lights on and reported a working connection.
Before I did all that I tried reinstalling 10.5.1 update on the hope that would replace the 'damage'. Sheesh All I needed was to fire up Cocktail? OMG Definite bug somewhere here...

  • Ethernet is 'connected' BUT safari says 'you are not connected'...?

Hello, I am baffled. I am helping my Mum and Dad's to set up their new iMac. All OK bar the connection to the Internet.
They have a new Broadband account with the ISP 'Talk Talk' (I know they are not necessariliy the best!). It is a DSL connection and I am using the 'Built in Ethernet' as the link to the Ethernet port of the SmartAX 882 Modem, as supplied by the ISP. In networking the Built in Ethernet is showing blue - "you are connected to the internet", Yet when I load Safari it does not connect and the page "your computer is not connected to the internet" comes up after a couple of minutes.
The modem 'link' light is steady green and the LAN light shows solid amber. I have added and saved the settings in the modem many times. The ISP support folks have said that the link light should go solid amber though this does not happen. I have rebboted and reconnected all the kit many times - still no joy.
So, any idea where the problem may be? is it the modem settings? is it the network settings?
PS: I have tried typing in the IP adress of a web page (e.g. http://17.254.70.0.91 etc..) to check whether there is a problem with DNS server settings, though no page loads.
Many thanks folks - any help on this would be appreciated.
    Graham
PPS My Dad's Mac is a 17" intel iMac OS 10.4.9
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi iGraham!
I have no familiarity with that setup, but the problem sounds similar to some who use the wrong port on the router.
Perhaps you can find a specific answer to your problem in this forum
    edit-
An alternative resolution to using a different router port would be to setup the Network panel of System Preferences with a LAN configuration instead of with an Ethernet configuration. After clicking on the "Assist me..." button, instead of clicking on the "Diagnostics..." button, click on the blue "Assistant..." button and then choose a LAN connection rather than ethernet. The result will be that you will end up with an entirely new "Location" rather than just another edit of your current "Location" - then to change from one "location" to another switch the "Location:" selector and hit the "Apply Now" button to avoid making unnecessary edits. Once you've switched the location and "applied" it, you'll see that your other settings are different than the ones necessary to make your original "Location" work.

  • Mac shows wireless internet connection, but Safari says "computer isn't connected to the Internet"

    Situation:
Computer shows internet connection (full bars), but won't actually connect to the internet and load webpages
    Attempted Fixes:
    Reset Safari
    Quit Safari
    Restart the computer
Turn off the computer with router unplugged
    Turn off Airport
    Swear at the computer
    Swear at the internet
Unplug the router and turn the Airport off too
    Additional Info:
Second computer (mac) connects to the internet so it's not an internet problem.
Last few days the internet has been slowly dying on the computer (Mac OS X) in question. Meaning that the internet asks me for the router password constantly, which was a new development.
I have seen information about reseting Plists and a few other weird things, but I didn't want to do anything drastic based on someone elses issue. I figured it's best to bring my specific issue to the forum before destroying my Mac by randomly deleting Plists.
    Any thoughts appreciated.

Excellent troubleshooting solutions which usually works.
Which os version are you using?
First contact your ISP.  You need to confirm that the issue is not on their end.
Change your router channel.  Sometimes this is all you will have to do.
Power cycling the router.  Read the router's user manual or contact their tech support for instructions.
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations:  Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock.  Highlight Airport.  Network Name-select your name.  Click on the Advanced button.  Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock.  Restart your computer.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1920 Mac OS: How to release and renew a DHCP lease
    No internet connection (wireless)
Check to see if an extra entry is present in the DNS Tab for your wireless connection (System Preferences/Network/Airport/Advanced/DNS).
Delete all extra entries that you find.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined."

  • Airport shows I am connected to a secure network, but Safari will not connect nor will any other internet software.

I cannot connect via Safari to a live Internet connection.  System preferences show Airport is on and connected to a secure network.  I am able to connect using my iPad and other devices.

Thanks. Turns out that I had to re list the router and update its password along with resetting the DHCP.  Once that was accomplished all seemed to work fine again.  Just can't figure out why the connection was disrupted.

  • Touch says I have Wifi connection, but Safari says no internet connection

My wifi had been working fine on my iPod Touch, but it all of a sudden stopped connecting to the internet 2 nights ago. I still have wifi internet connection on my laptop though...so it much be an ipod issue. I reset my modem/router and my network connection on my ipod...why isn't my ipod connecting to the wifi internet anymore? :[

Did you reset your network connections using Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Connections?
Did you try to log back into your network using Settings > WiFi > Other Networks and re-entering your network name, security settings, and password?
Have you tried a general reset of your iPod?

  • Talk Talk wifi connection but safari will not load any web pages?

I have a new Ipad and it is connected to TalkTalk wifi. But the problem is that Safari will not load a single web page?
Are there any known issues with this problem. My PC connects to the same wifi network and is running fine.
The build bar for the web page I try to access turns 3/4 blue but then gives an error message, 'cannot connect to server'
TalkTalk call centre kept saying that they do not support Ipad? But would not elaborate!
Apple call centre updated IOS 6.1.2 and reset network settings but no solution as yet.
Do I need to take this back?
Has anyone had a similar problem?

    How old is your MBP?
    Do you have APP?
Does this happen all the time? Does it happen on a specific site? What internet connection do you have?

  • Ethernet connection is aktive but Safari is not able to detect internet

The network diagnostic assistant tells me that my internet connection works fine and skype also works fine. However, when I start Safari (or Firefox) I get the message that the computer is not connected to the internet. This problem comes and goes, sometimes I am able to connect to the internet, and sometimes not.
Does anybody has an idea where the problem might be?
    Thanks

By the way, in case you (or someone else) does not know what a DNS server is and does, let me explain (OK, I copied and pasted from Wikipedia): "The Domain Name System (DNS) associates various information with domain names; most importantly, it serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-readable computer hostnames, e.g. www.example.com, into IP addresses, e.g. 208.77.188.166, which networking equipment needs to deliver information"
In other words, every website you type in is actually a series of numbers called an IP address. The DNS servers look up the website name and direct you to the actual IP address. For example, when you type in "www.apple.com" the DNS server looks up Apple's IP address (it happens to be 17.112.152.57 [they actually have more than one]) and directs you to that website.
So if your Internet is on again, then off again, it could be that the DNS server that your computer is using is sometimes available and sometimes not.
