Airport Scanning slowing connection

Sorry to post this again. After waking up imac, airport is scanning too long. About a minute before connecting... I did find someone posted and they thought it was iTunes or quicktime upgrade. Maybe, but searching "airport slow connection" I find many having this problem with no real answers. Somebody must have had this problem and fixed it... Any help?

The ethernet cable is coming from my express
OK, thanks for clarifying that for me. This confirms that the wired, or Ethernet portion of the AirPort Express is working correctly.
If the wireless radio on the Express is functioning correctly, then you should be able to get something in the range of 85-90 Mbps over wireless on either the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band.
BTW, these tests were conducted with only my MBP connected to the network, while it was sitting mere inches from theExpress.
That is much too close, since the signal can easily overload the wireless card on your computer, which will have the effect of knocking the speeds down.  Move the computer 7-10 feet, or about 2-3 meters away from the AirPort Express with clear line-of-sight between the computer and Express and run the checks again.
Be sure to restart both the AirPort Express and your computer before you run the checks.
If the wireless speeds still clock in low.......anything below 60-70 Mbps......then I would start to look around for any devices that might be introducing wireless interference on your wireless network. The biggest culprits are cordless phones in this regard, but any BlueTooth devices like a mouse or keyboard can sometimes create issues, as well as wireless camera/security systems. Turn off these devices temporarily as a test and restart the AirPort an computer again to see if the speeds will improve.
If speeds are still slow during your "test", then I would try a Factory Default Reset on the Express.
If still no improvement, you need to take the Express to an Apple Store....if you have one near you, or an Apple Servicer to let them take a look and run some tests.
If the wireless speeds are still low when you do this, then the Express is defective and will need to be replaced.
However, if the Express checks out OK, then you know that something is affecting your wireless signal at the house.  What that might be will be the real question.

  • AirPort Express Slowing Connection

I am experiencing a significant slow down using AirPort as my WiFi Router. I have Time Warner Cable Ultimate 100 as my internet package, running through a Motorola SB6141 and speed tests clock my connection between 85 and 97 Mbps when I'm hardwired. If I try to go wireless, (running through an early 2014 Airport Express with 7.6.4 firmware), I am cut down to 11 - 15 Mbps. From time to time, I can get up to 18 Mbps. What's going on? I was getting these same speeds when I was on their Turbo package (Up to 20 Mbps), but I upgraded because 4 laptops, 2 tablets, 4 smartphones, a Smart TV, and a PS3 were seriously leaching the system. With no significant difference, it's pointless for me to pay the extra cost every month.
Am I going to have to upgrade to the Extreme? I thought the Express would have higher speeds than this...

  • 3 Floors two AirPort Expresses - slower connection

I have an airport extreme downstairs. When i connect to in the same room I get a strong signal. When I connect via an airport express that see's the airport extreme, i get a slower internet speed. Then when I connect to a third floor airport axpress that sees the 2nd floor airport express, the signal slows even more. My question is will a Dr Bot External Antenna boost the signal to help maybe eliminate the second floor airport express?
    Thanks

Most people's experience with the Dr Bot external antennas, as reported in these discussion forums, has been disappointing.
Incidentally, the reduced data rate you have noted when connecting via a relay or remote base station is entirely expected.

  • AirPort Express - Slow connection speed

    Hi!
I just setup my AirPort Express station in my dorm room. I use a Acer Aspire 2010 laptop(Might add I've never had any issues connecting to wireless network, infact I use one every day at home and at school with flawless speeds). I started by having the AirPort on the floor under a wooden desk surrounded by wires and other plugs. I installed the newest Firmware updates for it, 5.7 I think, and installed the Setup Assistant and downloaded a Windows XP update for the WEP access. I setup the AE and connected to it using a 128bit encrypted password, 13 characters in length. Put my computer 3 feet away from the AirPort.
All worked perfectly and I had Excellent connection at 54mbps, for about 2 minutes, then it dropped to 1mpbs but stayed at Excellent connection signal. After a about 45 seconds it went back to 54mpbs but only for about 10 seconds, then dropped straight to 1mpbs. It goes up and down like this every 4 minutes or so, but the speed never really changes.
Everything was sluggish, from loading website, having conversation on MSN Messenger to downloading files, nothing was as it should. Websites took everything from 20 - 60 seconds to load, or just not load at all.
So I thought something must be interrupting the signal strenght, either the surrounding wires or concrete wall.
So I moved the AirPort to a higher ground. Now it sits about 6' from the floor on the wooden desk, nothing is near it, connects to the router and speakers and is at least a feet away from anything (except the desk, of course).
But same thing happends again. Plummets from 54mpbs to 1mpbs and then up to 54mpbs for a few seconds. No matter what the signal strength says its always the same sluggish feel.
I have a 4mbit connection, has always been stable using ethernet and has never failed sofar. Good speeds. I use a Micronet SP3350A Ethernet Router I was supplied by my ISP.
If anyone has any idea or any thought on this matter please elaborate.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Yours truly,

    Hi Trausti:
If all of your componets are 802.11G, try putting your AE in 802.11G only mode. That will prevent other slow 802.11B clients by joining your network.
You may also be hit with some interference. Do you have a cordless phone? If so, that may be your issue.
    Give that a try.

  • Airport Extreme slowing down internet connection to a crawl

    Hi,
    Can anyone explain this one?
Just this afternoon my internet connection slowed to a crawl. Pages would stall loading and I couldn't even collect emails. There was a connection there. A Google search might take a minute or so but anything else would barely flinch.
So I did a few restarts and complete power downs of all my peripherals, computers and network devices but no joy. I called my broadband provider who did a remote test of my cable modem and confirmed it was responding well.
So I removed the Airport Extreme from the network and connected directly to the modem. All was fine, in fact that is how I am working now. But when connecting the Airport Extreme back in I have this extremely slow connection. I have looked at both the Network preferences and Airport Setup Utility. Both claim the connection is good.
I also have an old G4 in another room. It was switched off during all the goings on this afternoon but I powered it up to see if the same problem persisted. Sure enough it does, as it is also connected via the AE. However, the local connection between computers is just fine.
So how do I resolve this? Why would the AE cause such an internet slowdown?
    Thanks,
    Colin

I've had similar symptoms on my network. Here are network details:
    Comcast is the ISP
I have an Extreme and an Express set up as a single wireless network.
Extreme is plugged in to the cable modem. Express is an extension of the Extreme.
Devices that are regularly "on network": Mac Mini (G4), MacBook, Mac Pro, 2 TiVO Series 2.
    All Macs are running 10.4.10.
Symptom: Over the course of 3-6 weeks, wireless access slows to a crawl for the Intel-based MacBook and MacPro, but not the PowerPC Mini. All web sites, email traffic, etc., for the Intel Macs becomes painful: CNN's home page loads in minutes, not seconds, for example. Unplugging and replugging the Express doesn't do anything. Powering off and on the Extreme resolves the issue. For now. There are no pending firmware updates for the Express or Extreme that I'm aware of.

  • Snow Leopard Server's slow connection when connected to AirPort Exteme

    Hi,
I've been experiencing slow connections ever since I hooked up my Mac Pro server directly(via ethernet) to my AirPort Extreme. Previously, the Mac Pro is connected to a switch, the AE is connected to this switch as well. Everything's fine until we decided to connect the Mac Pro server to the AE directly. Now we are having slow connection and checking Network Utility, it shows that en0 is receiving errors when previously there is none. I have connected a client computer on the same cable and it receives no errors. It's just the server that's receiving these errors. To clarify thing up my server's network configuration is as follows:
    IP address: 10.0.1.201
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Router: 10.0.1.1
    DNS: 10.0.1.201
    Search domain: example.net
I have configured my DNS server to use 10.0.1.1(AE's IP) as the Forwarder IP address so that my server and other client computers can still connect to the internet.
Checking the client computers connected on the same network, they are experiencing slow connections to the server as well.
There must be something that I need to set on this thing to make things work, any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks and regards,
    Andrew

I forgot to check my cables. Apparently they have used crossed-cable for the previous Mac Pro to switch connection. After connecting the server to our AirPort Extreme things got a little sticky, using a straight cable did the trick.

  • Airport will not turn back on after waking up, slow connections

    So...
Occasionally when I wake my iMac (2.8 GHz aluminum running 10.5.5 and all other updates) up from being asleep my Airport turns off by itself. No matter how many times I click to turn it on it never comes back on. Logging out does nothing, relaunching Finder does nothing. The only way I have found to fix it is to shut down or restart it. Oh, I am connecting to an older b/g Airport Express.
I assumed this was my only issue until I looked at all the reports of slow connection speeds. I realized that things can get very slow sometimes, but my connection bars in the little Airport icon never go down, they stay at a full signal.
And I can't video chat in iChat. With anyone using anything. Go figure.

For the time being I think I'm just going to plug my modem directly into the ethernet port. I can't stand that this ******** is happening with a brand new iMac when I just got done dealing with a fried iMac G5. Is Apple ever going to make another iMac that doesn't have something wrong with it?
If anyone knows of any fixes or other helpful information I would greatly appreciate it.

  • Very slow connection Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I'm running tiger 10.4.11 on macbook.
I've had major issues with the slow connection on my Airport extreme. based on the speedtest.com (i have time warner cable modem) i have 20meg download, 7ms ping, ang about 500k upload speeds.
But sometimes it takes 20 seconds to load a page like yahoo.com, and at times it just hangs. I updated the driver and admin utility last week, but the same problem persists.
any thoughts or solutions would be much appreciated.

    - i checked under develop menu of my safari, but i dont see the "show network timeline"
Don't dwell on the issue. It would be helpful to know what Safari (or Firefox) is spending so much time to load, but that won't solve the problem. What version of Safari are you running anyway? The latest one works fine with Tiger, in fact it's the fastest version yet. I recommend it. Here's the link: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
One thing is certain - you ought not to use Airport Admin Utility any more. Download and install Airport Utility. Earlier versions "may not offer expected features or may not be able to configure your hardware properly." You might find Airport Utility will offer a firmware upgrade for your Extreme. Install it.
Once all your equipment and software is updated, then let's find out what's causing your slowness.

  • Loosing and slow connection with Airport Extreme

Hi. Before I start, I hope there are some who suffer the same problem as me.
First of all, I have a problem with my MacBook and Airport Extreme. The Network I created with Airport is getting really slow or unconnected with my MacBook. So I tried to reset both the modem and Airport. Actually, it kinda works, however this problem occurs later.
First time I thought it was the problem with uTorrent that I didn't use uTorrent anymore but it still has a problem.
Because of this **** problem, I have to reset my modem and Airport Extreme several times a day and it really stressed me out. Embarrasingly, I don't even know what the problem is. is ti the problem with My macBook? AirPort Extreme? Modem? No idea..
    I need a help...
P.S. Modem seems working fine since the ethernet is working fine. maybe problem of Airport or MacBook. I think I should go to the Genius Bar but I am afraid that 'Genius' is going to just check once and say 'It has no problem.'

I too am having very slow connection speed issues with two of my white macbooks, both running 10.6.2, same airport extreme wireless adapter (built in). The strange thing is, these two macbooks came in a macbook 5-pack, and the 3 other laptops all have excellent speed. Nothing different has been done with these 2 laptops - all were updated (albeit the 2 were much slower to download the update), with nothing new installed otherwise...
There were some Macbooks that had an issue with the screws holding their internal AirPort cards in place loosening, resulting in noise and lower signal levels from the antennas.
You may want to try taking one of the affected Macbooks to a local Apple Store and see if you experience the same issues on their in-store network.

    Thanks for your response
Let me give the history - I started with an Apple Express being fed thru a D-Link  EBTR 2310 cable Router from an RCA DCM315 Modem (Pure). Comcast service all the way.
Got the 1st generation TC in 2008 and merely replaced the Airport Express with the TC. Worked ok
A year or two ago I did try removing the modem and feeding the TC directly from the modem. Resulted in the same condition I have now - Continuous flashing amber on the TC. So I put the router back in the chain.
Some time later, at the recommendation of a Comcast rep, I replaced the router with (a Belkin F5D 5231) to see if speed and dropout problems would be improved. I thought it helped some at the time but now I am not so sure.
Last week I decided to see if a new modem would help with download speeds. So I got another pure cable modem (Motorola SB 6121- high on the Comcast recommended list).
Got up and running easily with Comcast help and with the modem connected directly to a computer.
Next I put the TC in the link and again could not get past the TC continuing to flash amber. Although I did get connected to the internet with this configuration I lost connection two both of my printers - one connected by USB and the other wirelessly to the TC. Again everything works fine when I put the Belkin router back in the system.
    However with the router in there, the modem shows the downstream connection to be 10/100 ethernet speed. (Modem light changes color for indicating speeds.}
I have gone thru all of the combinations of powering down/ up, but all stays the same.
I can live with what I have but something still doesn’t seem right.
    Thanks again

  • Slow connection between two Macs in LAN

Why does it take so long to connect one Mac to another Mac's public folder on LAN?
    Mac mini 2.4 GHz (the latest model with 4 GB RAM) is connected to LAN with 100 Mbps LAN cable;
MacBook Pro 17" 2.33 GHz (2 GB RAM) is connected to LAN with AirPort 802.11 (G) via Linksys router WRT54GC.
Both computers are in the same room, Linksys WiFi router is 6-7 meters away, excellent signal strength. It takes about 50-55 seconds while MacBook Pro connects to the Mac mini. Why so long??? Do they use 2kbps connection speed? I thought with these network speeds (54Mbps for WiFi, 100Mbps for LAN) it should be almost instantenious…
    Both Macs run 10.6.4.

I'm having the very same problem, but only when connecting to one of the 3 Macs on my network. it eventually connects, but only after about 55 seconds. Connecting to the other 2 Macs is almost instant, so it leads me to believe that there is something wrong in the setup of the "problematic" Mac. This slow connection happens using either "Back to My Mac" or just trying to connect via Finder. Any ideas would be very welcome!

  • Airport (very) slow, ethernet fast, only my Mac affected

    Dear community,
I experience a weird problem since some days which gives me a headache. Following situation:
    - Airport is connected with my router properly
    - I experience very slow connection speeds
    - Other users within the same network do not have any problem
    - When connected to the same router with ethernet: normal speed
What makes the issue totally absurd is that I dont have any slowdowns in other networks using airport. Any suggestions?

  • Slow connection and hardware provisioning

My dsl service requires an ip. I gave them the MAC address of my airport base station. I connection should be 256k, but I'm averaging 20-25k. Why is my connection so slow? I have a powerbook, 1.33 ghz, and my neighbor shares the connection. Its not that we are on at the same time. Does hardware provisioning mean slower connect speeds? Is there a way to get around this?
    Thanks!

The slow downloads are most likely due to heavy traffic on the servers you are attempting to download from. Especialy since you were able to download speeds of 256k from the test. I'm unaware of any solution to this since the slow speeds are not coming from your ISP, but from the Apple or download.com. My speed test shows ~2.8 mpbs download speed but I never get that from Apple or others. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

  • Airport: scanning problem

this has been discussed in other threads as well, probably most extensively here
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1397364&start=0&tstart=0
but these threads have been quite confused, often combining a mix of (possibly related) problems and have not provided a workable solution
the problem i'm having is that airport keeps scanning the network, causing an instable connection and loss of network connectivity.
my configuration is a macbook (mid2007), running 10.5.3 fully patched, and an airport extreme basestation, software version 5.7
the problem seems to have occurred after upgrading to 10.5.3. "seems to" as i don't a clear break-point, but i definitely did not have this problem under 10.5.2 and have made no other changes to the network settings of this machine.
all other machines on the network have no problem, the problem is limited my macbook.
also, i've had the same problem when i took the machine to a local coffeeshop and tried to hook up there.
because of these reasons, i find any suggestion to make changes to the basesstation no solution, a work-around at best while we wait for apple to fix this.
istumbler logs show me an airport.scanner.update entry at the sampling frequency of istumbler (1 sec is the highest frequency)
istumbler also shows that signal strength is around 80% and that there is no overlap in channels or frequencies with other available wireless networks.
the number of available wireless networks changes every 5 to 10 seconds
airport flow.app says there is no snmp response from the basestation (though i have to say i have not tested this app in a situation where there were no network problems)
it seems to me that airport scanning has gone loopy - too much, too long and too interrupting
while we wait for apple engineers to figure this one out, does anyone know if there is a way to set airport scanning frequency?
    thanks!

If your problems have not been resolved, here is something else to try.
    User/<username>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.airport.airportutility.plist - delete this pref.
Root HR/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist - copy this file to your desktop, then open the copy with TextEdit and delete everything after the first <dict> and before the last </dict>. Save the file on the desktop.
Now delete the file in the above SystemConfiguration folder - you will require administrator password.
Now copy the new file on your desktop to the SystemConfiguration folder - you will be asked to Authorise with your administrator password.
Now reboot and with a bit of luck, your problems will be over.
I am beginning to think that my problems were caused by migrating my applications from my old MBP to my new, as I notice that a number of preference files say the preference settings were migrated.
