Airport showing connected, but no interwebs

im at my families house for the holidays. when i try to log in to their wireless, airport looks like it is connected, but yet cannot access the internet. this is the only place that i've had this happen. it is a windows computer sharing the connection, but so is my home one which i've had no problems. any tips as to this phantom connection?

Being connected to the wireless network means only that you're communicating with the base station - the wireless equivalent of plugging in an ethernet cable.
That doesn't mean you're using the correct settings - IP address, subnet mask, router address, DNS servers, etc. for the network. Most people use a DHCP server for that but it's possible your family's network is using static addressing (where each machine is configured manually), or that the DHCP server isn't handing out IP addresses for some reason (e.g. no spare addresses left).
Once connected to the wireless, open System Preferences -> Network and look at what it says about your network connection.

  • Airport card connected but safari not connected to internet

Running os 10.4.1 on IMAC g5 with airport card.
i am having some wireless network issues. when i try to connect to the linksys router that my airport card locates it tells me that i am connected to the network; but when i try to load a page in Safari it tells me that i am not connected to the internet. Internet Explorer gives me the same message.
i have been able to test my airport card by logging into another (neighbor's) network (just for testing). it received DHCP from that router and assigned a 198.162.x.x. IP address for my computer. i originally had the same issue as far as being connected but safari wouldnt open web pages. i manually plugged in DNS numbers 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 from OPEN DNS.com and Safari instantly loaded web pages.
when i try to do the same on the linksys network my airport card connects but Safari once again will not connect to the internet. I am receiving a DHCP IP address automatically from that router but cannot connect to the internet...
PLEASE HELP ME (it's driving me crazy!)

Oh man... since my last post (all of 15 minutes ago) my iMac now cannot connect to the network at all. The network status menu widget shows it as being connected (sometimes), but it can't actually connect to anything.
Just as an experiment, I turned off MAC address filtering on the base station. Didn't help.

  • TS1398 my wifi is showing connected but i am not getting internet access.  When  in the settings wifi settings  you can see the wheel or timer spinning but never a check mark like my other iPad.

my wifi is showing connected but i am not getting internet access.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Airport loses connection but still shows 4 full bars

I've got a strange problem I haven't been able to figure out myself.
On my MacBook Core Duo (original 2006) on 10.6.2, my airport loses connection with my wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) after 5-10 minutes of use. My airport still shows a full signal, but I lose all connection (I cannot even see the router itself when I navigate to its IP address in Safari - normally I get the web based configuration panel). If I turn off Airport and then turn it back on again, I get my connection back for another 5-10 minutes.
    I am using WPA encryption.
I get this problem when my computer is far away from the router or very close.
I do not get this problem on our other computers - one Vista desktop and and two XP laptops.
I have no connection problems when I plug my modem directly to the MacBook via ethernet.
My only thought at this point: there are numerous (8-10) other 802.11x networks in my building. I've done my best to choose a free channel, but the best I can do is choose a channel only 1 channel away from others (i.e., choose 7 when others are on 6 and 8). I wonder if signal interference is an issue...but why would all my Windows machines have no problem?
I'm out of ideas at this point - I appreciate any help :)! Thanks!

I am having the SAME exact problem with my Mac. I have a late 2008 white 13" MacBook and it's been upgraded to Snow Leopard and I'm running version 10.6.2. I am wondering if any Apple employees can assist us on this issue or tell us if the impending 10.6.3 upgrade will have a fix for this.
My Airport will be connected to my wireless network and be working fine. As MBaker22 says, after 5 minutes the connection seems fine, the IP is fine, the network is fine and the network works for other laptops and desktops in my house BUT I can't access the Internet. All of a sudden I have no ability to check for software updates, browse the web or do anything that connects to the Internet.
Some other strangeness. When I try to hit the IP of my wireless router in my web browser, it asks me for credentials and then just sits there saying Connecting to 192.168.1.1...
It also only says connecting to www.google.com or www.cnn.com or www.yahoo.com when Airport is behaving this way.
If I plug in my Ethernet cord to my Mac everything works just fine so this is an Airport issue and probably an issue with Snow Leopard? I'm not sure.
Anyway the REALLY weird thing is that I can ping some websites and not others in the terminal when Airport starts behaving this way. That might be because of caching but either way.
Here's a TCPDUMP of my connection on Airport (en1) using Google DNS 8.8.8.8 (but if I use my ISP DNS it still does this):

  • AirPort says 'connected' but Safari says 'not connected to the internet'

    I'm stumped.
I just replaced a failed HD. Installed OS from original disk. Airport shows strong signal and says "connected" but when trying to open Safari or check for software updates I receive a 'you're not connected to the internet' message.
Remember I had upgraded to Snow Leopard, so just installed that from disk as well. Same situation with the attempts to wirelessly connect.
Note - all other computers, smart phones, etc in the house can still connect wirelessly. When I connect the MacBook via the ethernet cable, it's fine. Problem is only with wireless connection.
Service is Verizon Fios. Have tried repeatedly restarting the router.
    Any other suggestions?

    John,
Yes, I've been running Software Update frequently over the last 24 hours (needed to update all the software on that new HD) said there were no updates at last check. However, followed link you provided above and installed the Combo update.
Was hopeful on initial restart after that install, as I rec'd a message to the effect of: "none of your preferred networks are connected". Selected my home network (which was listed and with strong signal), entered password and same result - not connected to the internet.
Took your advice above and returned to "Using DHCP" setting. Inital response was "no ip address" and then after short time, "self assigned ip address" "will not be able to connect to the internet". Tried "renew DHCP lease" and continually receive same result. All very frustrating.
My next step will be to try and connect wirelessly on a friend or family member's network (my local Apple store is a bit far away. Easier for me to visit the ones near my office during the work week).
If I am able to connect on another's network, does that indicate it's an issue with my router?
If I am UNABLE to connect on another's network, does that indicate it's an issue with my laptop?
This is so disappointing - the replacement of the HD was so easy, as was the reinstalling of software. This connection issue is souring what was a relatively painless and quick experience.
    Thank you again,
    Christine

  • AirPort fully Connected but Safari not loading

My airport shows i'm picking up full bars from my wireless router. But when i run safari it shows that i'm not connected to the server. I have a magicjack connected to my macbook and thats running fine.. fyi internet is needed to run this. Also on my itunes i can access the itunes store which also needs internet access. So i can get internet but accessing it thru safari it doesnt pick it up. I can access internet thru safari when i have my ethernet cable connect but not wirelessly.... HELP... PLEASE.. i'm about to loose my mind... I dont like being stationary!!!!!! Any advise is welcome..

    HI,
Try installing the v10.6.3 Combo Update
    Then repair disk permissions.
aunch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Airport remaining connected but unable to load pages

I've been using my MB for four years now and this problem has recently appeared over the last two days. The airport icon will show full bars but I will have no connection to the internet. If I power cycle the airport (menu turn off then back on) I can then continue to browse the web. This happens about every five minutes or so.
I do have other computers in my house that aren't having this problem. So I know it's something to do with my Macbook. I was going to do a reformat/reinstall but I wanted to see if there was a known solution here. It's almost as if the DNS service just stops working and needs to be reset...
Any solutions? Purchase a new card? Reinstall OS?
    Thanks!

    Hi!
I am experiencing the same problem! And by the looks of it some other users are too!
My Macbook is one and a half years old and I never had problems with using WiFi. I am currently using BT wireless and during the day it keeps dropping now and then.. I end up restarting the machine as the status icon shows that its fully connected with my chosen connection but internet doesn't work. After restarting several times and deleting all joined wireless connections history, it eventually works. I am getting annoyed by this now. Also, as said by the douglobue rest of the machines are working fine on wireless its only my macbook. Any help please?
    Thanks in advance!

  • Why won't my iPod work on iTunes or my computer?  It shows up (not on iTunes) and the iPod shows connected but it has to be "formatted." And why are half my songs unable to play on it anymore?  It just skips them!

I've read through several discussions and I've seen a lot of similar issues but none that were quite like mine.  Every time I plug my 3rd gen. iPod nano in it shows it connected on the iPod screen and iTunes opens up but the device does not show up in iTunes.  The icon on the iPod shows connected and gives the arrows circling showing syncing even though it still says connected.  But it won’t show up in iTunes.  It shows up on my windows computer but I can’t click it or make it do anything.  It keeps saying “You need to format the disk before you can do anything.”  And when I hit cancel it beeps and says "Location not available.  Dara error (cyclic redundancy check)."  As if I know what that means!!  And I have 800 songs on it but they aren’t all on my computer and some are on my parents’ computer but I can’t get to that one.  It shows it is a “FAT32” which I have no clue what that means but I’ve never noticed that before.
Windows "can't access the disk" and I don't know why.  It gives me that notification if I try to check the drive or disk or device for problems.  And if you click it on Windows it pops up a screen with formatting things (which I don't know anything about).  And then it closes and says that it CANNOT format the device.
The iPod works almost okay when it isn’t plugged in, but I’ve noticed that half my songs won’t play.  You click on it and it plays the next one in the album.  And it isn’t always the first song in an album but random songs.  And songs I listen to a lot.  You can’t go back (you can only go forward and you can’t skip over the ‘missing’ song) or even click to select those songs.  But other songs play normal, just not half of them that are on the iPod but all of a sudden no longer work.  And I don’t know why.  I have another 3rd gen. iPod nano that doesn’t have ANY of these problems.  It hooks up, it doesn’t need formatting, and all its songs play.  I don’t know what is wrong or what to do.  I’ve tried re-downloading iTunes and everything.  I don’t want to have to reset my iPod and lose everything.
I’ve tried locating the device in iTunes and it shows the iPod but it gives this weird symbol and I can’t select it.  It’s like a white box with a box that is outlined in blue with six random icons in the middle.   I’ve seen it before and it always means something is wrong or a file (which is where I have seen it before) is corrupted.  And like I said I have a second iPod nano of the same generation and it does not give this weird symbol.  Plus it connects just fine.  It’s this one iPod.
I don’t understand what is going on.  It worked just fine and then all of a sudden I noticed songs wouldn’t play so I went to plug it into iTunes and nothing has worked.  I’ve searched discussions and none of the tips help.  But I want my songs to play again and I want my iPod back.

  • New macbook, airport says connected but browser not working

    Hi,
Just got a new macbook. When I connect to the internet the airport says it's connected to the network, but my browser won't work like it isn't connected.I have connected a few times,so I know it does work, but now it won't work at all.
    Don't know what to do!

Having an internal IP address is essential.
Go to System Preferences>Network and note the color of the "Dot" to the left of Airport. Red=No connection, Yellow=connected but no IP, and Green=working.
Double click on Airport and click on the TCP/IP tab. Check to see if you have an IP address. Click Renew DHCP lease. Apply now if it is available. Open Safari and see if it works.
    Let me know what happens.

  • IPad 3 VZ LTE shows connected but no internet

I recently experienced an issue with my IPad 3 not connecting to Verizon LTE, it showed LTE connected but there was no internet access via Safari, ookla speed test app, or any other apps. I did a full reboot and it did not clear up. My iPhone 5C showed  same signal and tested over 8 mbs for speed. Tried several different locations and no improvement. I tried to reprovision the account, but it did not help, I then reset the network settings and that didn't help. I removed the SIM card an re-seated it and that helped for about 30 seconds and then the data stopped working again. I then used restore to reload the operating system and tried it before loading the back up, didn't help. I finally took it to the Verizon store and put in a new SIM card, which worked great in the store, but then it started the same issue. Has there been a recent change in the system software or the way it communicates through Verizon that would cause it to do this, and is there a way to validate the connection between the iPad and the Verizon network? One other thing I have experienced it having difficulty finding the network to begin with, it seems as though the signal strength has diminished some how for the iPad, but not the iPhone.
I appreciate any ideas on how to continue to troubleshoot

Hi. Check the version number of the router underneath the unit . Then go to www.linksys.com/download . Save it on the desktop . Access the router's web interface using http://192.168.1.1 . The default password is admin
USe the web interface to upgrade the router's firmware to the latest saved on the computer ..
After the upgrade , you need to reset and reconfigure the router ,

  • Ipad 4 wifi shows connected but times out to servers?

Why no wifi connection when it shows connected?

Have you tried restoring the iOS software?
iTunes: Restoring iOS software - Support - Apple
If nothing else has worked in the support article, this would be your next step. If that doesn't work, a trip to the Apple Store would be in order. If they can't resolve the issue, your iPad is still under warranty and should be eligible for a replacement.

Is that with your own computer via a wireless connection or with a public computer?
