Airport Signal stays low on imac g5 isight, even with new card.

I am a fairly new user in the mac world & until now have had no problems.
However the problem I have is a poor Airport signal mainly two bar droping to one, occassionally the signal gets stronger, this has only just started during the last couple of months.I really noticed the problem when downloading podcasts,as it began to download, then froze & ultimately lead to the internet connection timing out.I contacted the local store who have always helped me before they took the imac in,tried everything finaly putting in a new card, this worked fine in their shop but again didn't at home.My son has a imac g3 next to mine also on the wireless network & his signal is full strength. My machine is back at the shop where they are now going to try a new antenna. As you can see from my post I am not very technical but has anyone had any similar problems & found any different answers.

I did not see resetting PRAM mentioned yet, so if not done already, do that
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
plus this procedure to reset SMU (power management)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
Be sure to follow it precisely. When you reconnect the power cord, if you are using a crowded or old power strip, connect it directly to a wall outlet for this test. Power it up with nothing connected except power cord and once it starts up, connect only your keyboard/mouse (no other USB/FireWire peripherals). Try using it that way to see if the problem still recurs.
The only other suggestion I have is, if you have a external FireWire drive that you can erase (or create a small partition on), install a fresh Leopard installation on it. Start up from it and see if this problem still recurs.
Alternately, back up your data, erase (re-partition and reformat) the interal drive, and reinstall Leopard on the internal drive, then give it a try. If you clone (using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) to an external FireWire drive as your backup, you can still boot from your current installation (on the external drive). If the fresh installation test does NOT work, you can clone your clone back to the internal drive. If it does work with a fresh installation, you can keep using it and transfer just your user data back from the clone.

  • HELP! AirPort Signal "Suddenly" Sporadic on iMac G4

For about 2 weeks now (I believe it started in mid-November), I have been having some trouble with the AirPort's reception by an iMac G4 that we have in our house. Almost randomly, the signal will come and go, and it is off probably as much as it is on. The only thing I can think of that might have some relationship to the cause of the problem is that I performed a Software Update for the AirPort (see -> "AirPort Update 2005-001" http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportupdate2005001.html ; I also can't remember, I may have also done the Software Update for -> AirPort Extreme Driver Update 2005-001 http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportextremedriverupdate2005001.html .. although, I don't think I did the latter (See System Configuration below for explanation)). One question I have is ... if there is an update designed for 802.11g AirPort stations, and that update is applied to a system having only an 802.11b base and clients, would that perhaps cause a problem, including erratic network behavior? Also, is there any way that I can un-install the AirPort Software Updates that I performed? The odd behavior started shortly after the Update was applied. Also, the erratic behavior is specific to only the iMac on the local network ... no other machines on the local network are experiencing any similar behavior issues, regarding the random loss of the AirPort's signal. Additionally, there have been no changes in the house that I can think of that might also be the source of the problem (i.e., no new cordless telephones or no new other cordless or wireless devices that would cause Interference). Although ... I am suspect to think .. that because the signal does come and go (sometimes staying at 100% for hours, other times losing the AirPort's signal for equally as long), that there is some type of Interference that is the guilty party. Are there any small, hand-held devices that can be purchased that will show what signals and frequencies are in use in a given area, and perhaps showing possible conflicts? This is perhaps what I need. Finally, if some sort of "new" interference is the reason for the problem, is there a way to change the "channel" or "frequency" that the AirPort is operating on, to perhaps operate in another, less problematic frequency (and, would this frequency change be for that specific client only (the iMac), or would the frequency change affect all clients on the network?).
I do remember early on ... when the problem first began ... seeing a message stating something similar to "The AirPort Configuration File Cannot Be Read". If this is the problem, could I simply copy a similar file from another machine on the network, to the iMac? This "System Configuration File" may be part of the problem, or it may not. I am not sure.
And finally ... most of the time, in the menu bar, near right-center ... if I click on the AirPort "Baseball Diamond" icon, in the drop-down menu ... I can in fact see my network's name in the list, and it is selected ... but the signal strength showing in the menu bar for the AirPort is at 0%. When I am unable to obtain a signal from the AirPort, this is usually what I see when clicking the AirPort's status icon, in the menu bar.
The System Configuration(s) are as follows:
    iMac G4 800 / 60 / 512
    MacOS 10.4.3
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 9.52
    Wireless Channel: 11
    PowerBook G3 500 / 20 / 384
    MacOS 10.4.3
    Wireless Card Firmware Version: 9.52
    Wireless Channel: 11
(The Wireless Channel has always been 11 for both machines.
This has not changed in 2 or 3 years (since the AirPort was purchased.))
    AirPort:
I believe I have the "Snow" version of Apple's AirPort Base Station.
It is an 802.11b Base Station, and I believe it has Dual-Ethernet.
I think it was purchased in May of 2002.
    Apple Base Station v.4.0.9
Other AirPort Settings (I have never altered these):
    Wireless Security: Not Enabled
    Channel: 11
    Station Density: High
    Multicast Rate: 11
Enable Interference Robustness: Unchecked (Not Selected)
Internet (I have never altered these):
    Connect Using: Ethernet
    Configure: Using DHCP
Network (I have never altered these):
    Distribute IP addresses (Checked (Selected))
    AirPort Clients:
Share a Single IP address (using DHCP and NAT)
Port Mapping (I have not made changes to these settings in quite some time):
Several NAT / Port Forwarding items Applied (See Attached Image in my post at Mac OS X Hints Forums)
    Access Control:
    No Settings ever applied.
Something of Interest ... when I ran Apple's Network Utility, clicking on the "Info." tab at the far left, and then selecting "Network Interface (en1)" from the pull-down menu near the top left, I noticed that the IP address(es) gave a very, very strange number. It should have been something on the order of 10.0.1.x, but instead, it gives this: 144.3.8.0
What I am ultimately interested in are 2 things: #1) How can I resolve the connectivity issue, and, #2) What is happening that is causing this behavior?
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated. In advance, thank you to anyone that can help with this issue.
PLEASE NOTE: I have also posted this question at the Mac OS X Hints Forums. You can read my questions and some suggested answers to my problem, as well as see some images I have posted, by visiting my posting there. The link for my post at Mac OS X Hints Forums is:

I am posting the question here also, hoping that someone will be able to help. The problem has not been resolved, and appears to be becoming worse, with the AirPort's signal being acquired by the iMac only on rare occasions now. I am in hopes that someone will be able to help. In advance, thank you.

    iMac G4 800 / 512 / 60   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I think I may have solved this issue? It appears to be caused when you mistakenly install the Airport Update 2005-001 on a Mac with an original Airport card and not an Airport Extreme card as required by the Update. Here's my posting to MacOSXHints forums:
I have two iBooks that both developed this issue soon after the 10.4.3 Update and the Airport Update 2005-001. In troubleshooting I tried many things. First, the two iBooks are a clamshell 366 SE and a dual USB 500, both with Airport cards with 9.52 firmware. I'd been using both with a D-Link DI-514 802.11b router for several years without any issues. I also have used them regularly with an Airport Extreme Dual Ethernet version. When these disconnect issues began, I switched to a D-Link DI-524 802.11g and the results were identical with all three, so I don't believe the "base station" has anything to do with this issue, and doubt that reinstalling base station firmware will fix it.
I had used Software Update and got the smaller iBook specific updates, so I downloaded the 10.4.3 Combo update and installed it on both, and there was no change.
This led me to zero in on the Airport Update 2005-001. I decided to attempt to uninstall this update, especially after I realized I had installed it against the instructions in the Read Me, which stated an "Airport Extreme Card" was "required" for this software. I was almost certain this was this issue. I used OSXPM (OS X Package Manager) to "uninstall" the package. It uses the receipt in the HD>Library>Receipts folder to get a manifest to uninstall everything. OSXPM is available as freeware here:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14368
I actually downloaded the Airport Update 2005-001 again and opened it with Pacifist just to check and see that "everything" was uninstalled by OSXPM, and it appeared that "everything" was uninstalled correctly. Since Pacifist was open I Updated Prebinding (same as optimizing) and then rebooted by using Cmd-Opt-P-R to clear the PRAM and then Cmd-Opt-O-F followed by:
    set-defaults<Return>
    reset-all<Return>
to reset the NVRAM just in case it was configured wrong by the software I'd just removed. I suppose I might have used Onyx or Cocktail or similar to clear caches and optimize, but I didn't.
On restart it booted into OS 9.2 and I tried out Airport 2.04 in 9.2 and the results were not promising at all. The signal started full strength and then stopped dead every few seconds when I was within 5 feet of the router. Unfortunately I've never used either of these iBooks with Airport in 9.2 so I don't know if this is new, or if perhaps it never worked better in 9.2?
I switched to 10.4.3 and the network is shown at full strength and seems stable for now. It's been about 5 hours, which is longer than since this issue began. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it's solved for good?

  • Mac Book wont pick up the Airport signal unless near the iMac

    Hey
Since the latest update (?) my MacBook has been blanking on my airport on start up. It's been using the same network for years. It only picks up with a cold reboot if sitting in front of the iMac. Then it's happy as Larry - full bars, anywhere I take it around the apartment.
Have cleared the Keychain and reloaded network from Preferences. Tried scanning but that stops prematurely after picking up a network signal 15 stories up - 25% strength on AirRadar - my own airport is 50-60% on AirRadar. Airport is on Ch 13, neighbours are on 1 and 6.
It's just blanking it like an ex after a bad break-up.
    Urgh.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

  • Airport signal is low

    hi everybody
I have a small wireless network at home and two macs which connect to it and from there to the web. My first mac is a macbook and the second machine is a 1st generation MacPro. The Macpro until yesterday was connected via ethernet while the macbook via airport. Both machines were running smoothly. Today my local Apple dealer installed the airport card at my macpro, tested it at THEIR WLAN and I went home hoping that I'd get rid of ethernet cables.
However the signal I get from my airport card at the macpro is very very weak. With a maximum of five I get a one, maybe a two. At the same time if I turn on my macbook and leave it right next to my macpro, the macbook will work with a signal of five. So I have two machines at the VERY SAME part of the house with two totally different signal levels.
Could it be that the macbook has a more powerful airport adapter? Could it be that the apple dealer did a bad job? Am I missing some other hidden setting in order to make my macpro work as it should?
Any help is more than welcome
    ps1 my modem/router is a US Robotics
PS2 both machines run on 10.4.11

Your problem from what I can deduce is the same as mine. THE OPERATING SYSTEM OS X 10.5.1 & 10.5.2. Although Apple hasn't admitted the problem yet. Don't expect a solution anytime soon or at least until soon after they admit the problem. The problem started for me when I updated 3 of the 5 Macs I have on my home (Airport Extreme Snow) wireless network to OS X 10.5.2. The machines that still have 10.4.11 are working just fine. The network spends more time "searching" than networking. I am sure that the recent network/security updates included in the recent updates are causing the problems, but I can't seem to find any definitive answers, just vague guesses.
ANYBODY OUT THERE WITH REAL ANSWERS PLEASE POST THEM, THANKS in advance

  • ISight Problems With New iMac

I just purchased my first Apple computer, after 27 years of PC use. Its a 24" 2.8GHz and it has been great. The built-in camera was working great, until yesterday (week 3). My video blanked out (black screen) when I was using iChat. Then I opened Photo Booth and got a green screen - no video. After a while, some video came back, but they consisted of frozen frames with lots of video noise (lines across the video). I quit for the evening, and when I turned it on the next day, I had the same bad video (frozen frames with noise). A quick chat with the Apple Care folks soon had me reinstalling the OS. My concern is that I have no clue as to the cause of the problem - which means it will probably happen again. Has anyone else had this issue or know a probable cause?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, tkd_jo99
Once you have installed a known-good copy of Mac OS X, Reinstalling Mac OS X again will likely not be required unless you damage the system in some way. (It is generally a bad idea to move, modify, rename, or delete any item outside your User > Documents folder unless you are an experienced OS X user or are following directions from someone you trust.)
"Why" iSight gives problems can be different for different users. Here are the solutions that help most users who encounter the variety of green-screen problems avoid a service call. None are complicated, but, unless you like troubleshooting, the simplest way to find which one will work for you is to try each one in the list until you find the one that fixes your Mac. If none of the fixes in (0) through (4) below works for you, you may have a hardware problem that requires the services of an Apple Service Technician.
    (0) Restarting your Mac may get iSight working again.
    (1) Check your System Preferences as explained in this kbase article about Built-in iSight camera produces blue or green pictures.
    (2) If your System Preferences are set correctly, try every suggestion re: Built-in iSight in the "How to Troubleshoot iSight" article.
Be sure to include the checks for whether the problem is "application-specific" and "user-specific".
If you need help creating a new user account to check whether your problem is "user-specific" during Troubleshooting, see this Help article.
    (3) If resetting or the other suggestions do correct your problem, try the following:
    • Backup your Home Folder, or at very least, your important files.
    • Repair permissions. (Click here if you need help.)
    • Then download and apply the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (iNtel).
    • Finish with another Permissions Repair, and then check your iSight again.
Users have reported fixes to a variety of audio, video, connectivity, and software conflicts and unreliability issues after properly applying Combo Updates.
    (4) A few iNtel Mac laptop users have also reported success after unplugging their Macs, disconnect EVERYTHING, including both power and peripherals, and leaving the battery out for half-an-hour to overnight. To date, no desktop iNtel Mac users have reported that disconnecting has helped them, but you could try disconnecting everything for several hours (no battery removal needed for your iMac) to see whether yours might be the first.
    (5) If none of these suggestions help, contact Apple or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider for a professional service .
    (6) If your Troubleshooting from step (2) above shows that the problem is "application-specific" to iChat and you cannot find the solution yourself using Apple's iChat Support page, you should search or post about your particular problem in iChat AV 3 Forum. You will get best help fastest if you include all the information requested in FAQ 4 When do I Post a New iChat Topic ? in your initial post there.

  • IMac G5 iSight and the new Magic Mouse - WiFi dropping out.

The G5 with iSight seems to be unique amongst Apple computers, in that it shares the WiFi with the Bluetooth on a single compound card. I have not tested this out completely but it certainly seems to be the case that the Magic Mouse when left, having finished a session on the iMac, will after a few hours 'power down'. When it does so, sharing the WiFi, it will disable the wireless communication. I can find no known settings to avoid this from happening.
If I had dropped my iMac into sleep mode and woken it with a click of the mouse, all would be fine, however with my G5 downloading a file in the background, to come back and find the wireless has 'dropped out' is disconcerting to say the least.
Usually the WiFi can be re-established by turning it off and on again, then re finding my router (a TC in the other room) and all is well again for another 'period of time', which I can only guesstimate to be a couple of hours. However occasionally I will have to 'Restart' the iMac to get back to a working system. This is something I only ever really have to do with my work PC; I have NEVER had to do this on the iMac before. This is a quaint but annoying Windows thing and should not occur on a Mac. (This last phrase is slightly tongue in cheek!).
The WiFi link to my work PC via the TC is never compromised, which pointed the finger to the new magic mouse. I run the last version of Leopard for the PPC processors, 10.5.8 and have loaded the magic mouse driver software.
Has anyone else seen this happen?
Has anyone else got a solution, other than not using the Magic Mouse?

  • IMac G5 iSight Model. NEW HDD.

Hi. I just replaced the old HDD with my New 500 GB Seagate Barracuda HDD.
So, I'm trying to install new OS X Tiger too.
When I put the disc in and turn it on with holding down the C key... It goes to the grey screen with apple sign on it and then stay there forever! (I think for 30 minutes.... then I just turn it off...)
Then, I tried the Option (Alt) key... It shows only the CD drive but not the Hard drive (I'm assuming it's because of the NEW HDD.)
So, I click the CD drive and then It goes to the grey screen with apple sign on it and the spinning wheel thing is below the apple sign.... But, in few minutes the apple logo turns to the "No Entry" sign and then stays there forever!!!
I don't know why this is happening... and I don't have the old HDD anymore....
    Please help me!

In which case it's possible the drive itself is faulty, see if you can return it for a new one.
Can you see it if you use Target Disk Mode?

  • Imac won't boot with new hard drive installed

So I installed a new 1Tb caviar black in my PPC G5 Imac, but when I turn the computer on, I get no video, no startup chime, nothing. The power light does come on, and fans start running after a minute or so, but thats it. I can't boot from the install disc.
The computer boots up as expected when I remove the drive(startup chime, grey screen, missing folder icon).
Any suggestions to what the problem is? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

wierd i have similar problem. I removed HDD after crash to backup in an enclosure before reinstalling os again, put the hdd back and connected the hdd sensor backup (although i thought it was a knock sensor..doh!) . Mac wouldnt start, no screen, no chime, nada, but sleep light stays on. With PCs this usually mean CPU fault so i removed RAM to see if could get a BEEP meaning CPU is ok as it spots ram. No beep. So after checking everything i stripped out ram, hdd, airport and battery and reset PMU, tried again and now i get beep!! so cpu works. slowly adding everything back in and trying power up, last thing to go in was hdd sensor and sure enough when this is connected i reproduce the symptoms. So i disconnected the sensor and tried and i get chimes etc... Ive inspected the cable and made sure is connected right way up and still cant get to work. So it seems sensor is goosed! Debating wether to replace just yet

  • IMAC won't boot with USB card reader attached

My quite new 24" iMAC won't boot if I have a USB card reader attached:
I get to the white screen with the apple logo, but it gets stuck there and the little spinning gear below the apple logo never appears (I've waited several minutes). (In all my test cases, there is no card in the card reader.)
I've tried two different card readers with the same results ("iDOTconnect" brand and a brand new Apacer unit, both are USB2.0 multi-format card readers).
The 1st one I tried via a USB hub, the second one I tried via a new hub and also directly connected to the mac (both of those hubs work fine).
    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hello strathglass
The same thing can also happen with other connected devices such as external HD's and iPods, the Startup Manager is lost and searching for a boot volume.
    1. You may be able to fix it by going to: *System Preference / Startup Disk* and select the *Mac OS X 10.5.5 on Macintosh HD* then *Click the lock to prevent further changes.*
    2. Leave those devices that cause boot issues disconnected until the iMac is up and running!
    3. Only sleep the iMac, and be sure to disconnect those devices be for shutting down or updates that require a restart!
As a habit, I have always ejected and disconnected all mounted USB devices (flash driver, iPods, cameras, card reader, etc.) from my hub be for sleeping, restarting or shutting down...

  • ISight issues with new macbook pro Retina ?

Hi all, since I have my new MPB with Retina display I have been having some issues with the isight camera, when it first boots in photobooth of facetime sometimes the screen (from the camera) is all blue or green and with some weird line and then it stabilizes for a while but the image is all grainy and looks cheap. The guy at the apple hotline told me to reset the SMC and it seemed to have improved a bit but it's still not that good !
Any ideas on what could be happening ?
    Thank you all

You're welcome - I Googled "Macintosh webcams" and came up with quite a few different units.

  • Airport Signal Varies

    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I am having what I think is a similar problem, although my problem is more related to a complete loss of signal. I am starting to think, from what I am reading in other posts here, that it is something related to 10.4.3, as the problem I am experiencing began after installing the 10.4.3 update. Do you know if the PowerBook has 10.4.3? Also, do you have and/or are you using something prior to 10.4.3 on possibly any other, unaffected machines? iMac G5 (iSight) with 10.4.11:  Screen always dimmed. Starts at full bright and a second later dimms and stays like that forever.  Brightness controls work normally under this circunstance.  Please help !!!
Please don't tell me to adjust anything on the preferences, since I have tried all.  I think it may be anoter kind of problem, maybe hardware related or anything.
I ran the Hardware repair DVD and everything was ok, but when the imac restarted the screen was very lit again, but when it went sleep, when it went awake again the screen got dimmed again.  Because of that I think that the problem could be software related, but who knows.  Excuse my english.

I can't see another possible answer - the longer your machine is up, the more the power supply is stressed, it protects itself by dimming the screen to lower the draw on it.

No real help but this is a common problem for c2d machines it seems. They have the new "n" protocol wireless card in which willl be faster and further than the g with the new apple extreme base station. It will also be very good for streaming video (iTV). This is just consolation for an iffy wireless link. These boards have many threads on this topic (eg macbook pro area). Do a search any you will find the others with the problem and maybe a solution.
    Cheers

  • IMac G5 (iSight) First Impressions

Well, I got my iMac G5 (iSight) from Apple yesterday. It really looks unbelievable. I'm surprised at how they can get all that power into such an elegant look and design.
Ok, here is what I think so far.
When I got it out of the box, hooked it up in no time. I have one thing to note about the audio in/out ports. It seems that the connector will "click in" all the way into the port, and make a good connection, but the shaft of the input cable is a bit visible, which could make one think it's not in all the way, and maybe damage the port by trying to push it in more. Once, in, if you move the cable, you will hear some static, but I don't know if that has anything to do with the shaft no going all the way flush to the back of the unit. Anyway, the cables won't be moving, so static won't be a problem with normal use.
The display brightness. The guys at Apple have a few settings. Bright, Brighter, Brighter Still, and Insane! This display is sooooo bright. Even with the brightness turned down all the way (BTW Apple, when brightness is turned down/off, it should actually get "less bright"), it's still too bright. So you'll want to calibrate on a lower brightness. I had a 20" Cinema, so I know they are bright, but this seems REALLY bright.
Unlock keychain error. After setting up the Mac and going through the setup program, after launching OS X, I got this box that said to input a password to unlock keychain for airport for system. I tried my password, but that wouldn't work. I just cancelled. All appeard fine, but it showed up again. I did get this fixed, the solution will be later.
Unable to verify disk using 10.4.3. As you know in 10.4.3, you can now do a verify disk while the boot volume is mounted. However, I kept on getting an error message that said could not unmount volume, and it wouldn't let me. I also solved this, solution in a minute.
The only thing I can think of for these problems, is that there was a problem with the factory install. So I did a clean install using the factory discs, then set all my preferences. I had no problems after that. I ended up wasting like 6 hours in the process, as I moved all of my music (16,000+) songs over before I knew of the problems, as well as installing all of my software and changes preferences within each piece of software. I was a bit mad to say the least.
In terms of the hardware working, it's really quiet and I've experienced no problems yet. It's definitley a step up from my mini (which I have on eBay right now, along with my 20" ACD which just sold for $660.00, the mini is up to $781.00). Along with some other stuff I'm selling, I won't pay anything out of pocket for the iMac, so that was a pretty good upgrade.
Front Row, in theory is a great idea, but since I have 16,000+ songs, with hundreds of artists, it really isn't too practical right now. Maybe if they add an index, where you can jump to artist/song by letter, that might help. Or have some menu options you can scroll through on the bottom of each screen. Right now, it just takes too long to get to where I want to go, so iTunes is much faster. The album art and interface is nicely done, but again, it's just too time consuming to get what I want.
I would buy this iMac again, and getting $100.00 off buying last Friday was a great deal. Aside from the software problems initially, I've had nothing but quiet, problem-free use. After having the mini, which was almost completely silent, this computer is still almost silent. Of course in the natrual seated position, if all is quiet, you can hear a fan, but it's not a whirring loud sound, just a faint fan sound. I have read some complaints about noise issues, but I don't hear anything like that. It's really, really quite. My PC, now that was noisy. I'll post if I hear different.

Hello hPad and welcome to the wonderful world of Apple!
Just a few things to bear in mind when you search on eBay:
    1. £500 sounds too much to me. They only cost £1000 new (they were last made in 2006) and as the G5 is officially obsolete it is probably only worth around £300 or so.
    2. Make absolutely certain that any secondhand Mac you may buy comes with the original install disks. There are maintenance tasks that are impossible without them. If the vendor cannot offer these, don't buy from him.
    3. OS Leopard 10.5.x is as high as a G5 can go. From new, it had Tiger 10.4.x installed, so you may also have to buy Leopard. If so, make sure you are getting a black retail disk, not somebody's cast-off updater.
    4. The G5 iMac has only one slot for adding memory (RAM), so the maximum you can install is 2GB, making 2.5GB in all. As you can see below, my G5 iMac has a total of 1.5GB of RAM, which has proved sufficient. If you want to buy additional RAM stick to either Crucial or Kingston. Both offer a lifetime warranty.
Feel free to post back with any additional questions. Happy hunting!

  • IMac G5 (iSight) 20" fails to start.

My wife's now out of warranty iMac G5 (3rd generation with built in iSight) is in trouble. I'm unsure what went wrong, but it won't stay powered on for longer than a minute or two. The OS doesn't even have time to boot up before power is cut off. It hangs at the gray screen and then powers down.
I've removed all peripherals and only have the USB keyboard and mouse plugged in. Zapping the PRAM and reseting NVRAM were not successful in solving the problem either.
I tried starting in single-user mode, but I wasn't able to get any farther, although I did get some info (see below). The last message it displays (repeatedly) is "USBF: 55.798 OHCI driver: OHCIRootHubPortPower bit not sticking (0) Retrying."
From some web research, it seems that there may be pre-existing issues with the power supply, but that may apply more to the 1st and 2nd generation models. The iMac G5 Repair Extension Program did not apply to my model/serial number. I am, however, just 3 months out of AppleCare.
Here's the remainder of the information I was able to get by photographing the screen before power cut out:

Any thoughts on what this could be? Based on the info above, it seems like there's a power issue...

Don't mess with the iSight, it's particularly difficult to open, although it can be done, but only if you are very sure of your skills. If you are confident, however, go for it!
You can buy a replacement at [welovemacs.com] and here are some ideas on how to do it:
