Airport suddenly loses connection

Hello!
So, I've been having this strange issue with my airport since last night. I've read up on some of the issues and I've tried a bunch of fixes, but nothing seems to work.
I'm using a new macbook I bought in January, running OS X 10.6.2
Last night after my macbook goes to sleep, I wake it back up and find that for some reason, I cannot connect to the internet. My airport icon at the top right of the screen has a little exclamation mark on it, and I go under system diagnostics to try and fix it. I've been using the same router for the last two months, and haven't had it crap out on me, and I didn't download anything new, so I don't know exactly what caused it to stop working. Also, my girlfriend was able to connect to it no problem on her PC, so I know it's a problem with my airport, and not the router.
On top of that strangeness, I can actually connect to ANY other wifi service I find (which is how I'm actually posting this). On top of that, if I take the cable and connect it to the computer, I can use the internet fine (but cables are lame and I don't want to do that).
I've tried deleting all my networks saved under system preferences, but that didn't work. I've rebooted, turned airport on and off, still nothing.
I went under system diagnostics to try and fix it. I follow the instructions (I use DHCP to connect), turn the router on and off, and on the side I get green lights under Airport, Airport settings and ISP, but I get a yellow light under Network Settings. So I open up network settings and I have a yellow light beside airport and under it it says "Self-Assaigned IP," which makes no sense because under TCP/IP I have "Configure IP" set to "using DHCP."
I have the latest updates and everything, so I have no idea what caused this mess. Anyone have any ideas?

No, I haven't, but it it's a fairly simple router, and it doesn't look like it has any extra channels. Plus, because I'm in Korea, all the writing on it is in Korean. But there are no extra switches or anything like that, so... I don't know exactly how I would go about changing the router channels.

  • Airport express loses connection and blinks amber until restarted many times a day.

I have an AirPort Extreme as my,main router with a gen 1 airport express and 2 gen 2 express as range extenders to cover all 3 floors and outdoor area.  I have an Insteon HUB connected to one 2nd generation express and an Insteon IP camera that is on the far edge of the WiFi coverage area.  About 3-5 times daily, the express will blink amber and lose connection.  I need to either restart the network from airport utility or just unplug and restart the specific express. This fixes the problem but only temporarily.  Why does this occur?  Is it due to the wireless camera losing connection?  It seems to occur when I try to access the camera or devices thru the Insteon App.  I have purchased the additional express thinking it was a poor connection to the other range extender but this has made no difference.  I have been on tech support with Insteon for many hours, and they are unable to help.  Any suggestions?

Hello Daniel Epps. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Every few minutes, it seems to temporarily lose its connection to the internet and start flashing amber until it reconnects. It's extremely annoying. Does anyone know why this is happening? Is it an airport problem, or a cable modem problem?
It could be either or neither ...
It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference in the immediate area that is preventing you from getting a good clean signal, and what I would check for first.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like the following to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible:
    o MacStumbler, or
    o iStumbler

  • Airport Express loses connection to base station

Airport Express second gen loses connection to base station, has to be reset.

Roger that.  Late 2013 MBP 2.5 i5 4mb ram, 10.9.1 Mavericks, formatted and hand loaded after questionable upgrade load.  Fast, flawless, no issues.
Airport Express configured to wirelessly extend existing network for the express purpose of supplying an analog
input to a stereo amplifier via airplay.  No other devices are connected to the AE.
The WAP is a Century Link Actiontec C1000A VDSL2 physically located 6 feet from the AE with no obstructions.
There are no existing proximal fortuitous distortion or RF interference sources.  Other 802.X networks near are
on non-conflicting channels.  The WAP is less than six months old and has no issues.
The WAP is configured  for MAC filtering with the SSID turned off.  In the allow list are two iphones, a printer, two more MBPs and the Airport Express.  One of the iphones is loaded with the Remote Ap which functions
flawlessly when the AE is connected.
The AE connects properly in the Extend Existing Network mode and performs as advertised as long as Air Play
    and/or itunes is active.
Some time after music has ended, the MBP has gone to sleep, or been shut down ... the Airport  Express loses its connection to the wireless network, with its amber light flashing.
Performing a reset and reconnecting is necesssary, and all works as advertised after.  Subsequently,
sleep, inactivity, or shutdown will cause loss of connection again.
I am aware the AE can be connected with CAT6, but that is unnaceptable.  If I had wanted to use wire I
would have plugged the MBP into the amplifier and saved $100.
My speculation is some sort of TCPIP flub in the design ... as in the AE does not natively transmit keep-alive
packets when it stops getting data from the Air Play computer.  It would be easy to decide whether to fix
the problem or return an inadequately designed product ... if there were any information about it.  No schematics, no operation description however leaves me only to say thank you for your time and hope
    you have the solution.

  • Airport express loses connection to mac

My Airport Express works perfect when tested thru Ethernet cable directly to Mac. As soon as I move it (very close to computer and where it's always been), it loses it's connection with Mac and doesn't show up in Airport Utility. Any suggestions?  It has always worked fine where it is now it doesn't..

Is your AirPort Express Base Station (AX) the only router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly, by Ethernet, to a Broadband modem? What is the make & model of this modem?

  • Airport Extreme loses connection on applying security

I have just bought an Airport Extreme as my first step on my transition from PC to Mac but it's making me think twice!
I can connect to the AEx when i don't apply any security or devices. then as soon as i try to upgrade the security to WEP or WPA or any security combination my PC loses the connection with the error message "Airport utility was unable to find your base station after restarting".
I've tried everything I can think of including tens of Hard Resets trying different combinations of settings to no avail. Any ideas?

I have the exact same problem, I've tried to configure with WPA and password, and the PC just won't recognize a valid connection, won't connect to the internet.
I have a perfect connection without security. Can someone help with configuration? My MacBook Pro recognized the network and can sign in without a problem. I just can't seem to get the PC to sign into the network.

  • Airport express loses connection

my airport express was working and now it will lose the connection and I have to unplug the unit and plug it back in to connect. This keeps on happening. It appears to have the latest firmware 7.6.4

    Hey rrross324,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues with your AirPort Express. A reset of the AirPort Express might help this issue:

  • My Apple Airport express loses connection

We have a 3-4 months old Apple airport express. When it works, it works really well.
We use it for streaming shows etc on the television via Apple tv and obviously to go on the internet.
We have 1 iphone 5s and 1 iphone 6, 2 iPad Air, 1 MB Air and 1 MB pro Retina so all our devices are pretty much Apple.
The express router is connected straight to the internet cable from the wall, so there is no router in between or anything. I can always connect with the router, but internet is not always pooring through. In other words, im always logged on the wifi, but it seems as something is often blocking the internet. It definitely has something to do with the router because I can be on the internet via the router on the macbook air while both iPads won't work.
I often solve the problem by opening network preference - assist me - continue - log on the net again - type in my password for the computer and then it works again. But this is obviously not a sustainable solution. And this is also not an option on the iPads, so when it doesnt work on the iPads it just doenst work... :-/
    What is the issue?

    No one?

  • Internet Suddenly Loses Connection then Reappears

I've read the following two discussions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2430423&start=0&tstart=0
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=11691547#11691547
I have a WRT54G2 V.1 wireless router that my iMac and my roommate's Macbook Pro use to access the Internet wirelessly. However, recently, the Internet will suddenly disconnect and reconnect again. This usually happens when both computers are on and online at the same time (though I've seen it happen when only one Mac is online.
I've thought about changing the channels, but after using System Profiler to look at the channel my Airport uses, the same channel (6) is also used for the wireless router.
Is it possible for me to change the channel used by Airport without using Airport Utility (Airport Utility says that there are no scannable Airport devices nearby, since I don't use an Airport wireless router)? I already know how to do it through my wireless router, but I'm not sure how to do it through my Mac without using Airport Utility, and I don't want to screw it up even more than it already is.
    Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, I should have clarified, my point wasn't to go tell you that you needed to buy the expensive router. (believe me... I was upset that my first express lasted slightly over one year and then fizzled out on me, I didn't want to buy another one.) My point was to say that it has to do with that router and Macs.
I didn't have the option to call apple care, and even if I had, they probably would have told me to call linksys, which I did. They were no help at all, just a guy sitting at a computer screen with the automated help screen scripts to run through. This was about 4 years ago, and I scoured the forums for help, which at that time there wasn't much, and I posted, but still no help. I talked with IT guys and they didn't know how to help me either. I'm not an internet or Mac expert, but I do hold that title in my house, and amongst my friends, haha!
I was just wanting you to know that it most likely isn't your computer being broken (as I took my laptop everywhere and wi-fi worked everywhere on probably every sort of wi-fi hookup possible), it's maybe how the Macs talk with the Linksys routers. Now that the routers have been out for longer, it seems that there might be help for you.
My only solution after a month trying to fix my problems was to just buy the apple wireless. I sincerely hope that you find a better one.
So, on the linksys, is there a way to change it to utilize the 802.11n instead? I seem to remember something where I could change that within the linksys management. The site looks updated too, have you called linksys? They also may have some more information since I'm sure they have heard more than just my complaints in the last 4 years.

  • Airport  Extreme loses connection to USB disk

Recently I upgraded my Airport extreme to 7.4.2 software. Since that time AE I keep losing connection to the disk when copying large files or after browsing on it for a while.
The drive is simply gone (no share advertised)
The only way to get it accessible again is by resetting the AE (soft reset via airport utility)
Is there a way to revert to the previous software (there appears to be no newer SW or fix at the moment)?
    My config is as follows:
Airport Extreme 802.1n operating a 5GHz wireless N network, 1TB Seagate (Seagate FreeAgent 102D) external USB drive attached to it (formatted with MAC filesystem)
on the ethernet port is a linksys router acting as a Wireless G Accesspoint (for my wife's Windows laptop)

    Toryn Farr wrote:
I've been having exactly the same problem. The Macs on my LAN will all continue to have Internet access. On any of them, the base station still shows up in a Finder window under "shared"... but if I click on it, it will think for a moment and then say "Connection Failed" where it normally says "Connected As: USER NAME". And then none of my computers can access the shared volumes until I reboot the router.
I'm having exactly this same problem.
Not sure where the problem comes from, but here is my environment:
Airport Express (older model) Version 6.3 as WDS remote
Airport Extreme (version 7.4.2) as WDS base station
    Powerbook G4 (1.33 Ghz)
    PowerMac G4 (Mirror Drive Door)
    iTunes 9.0
I've had problems with my Hard Disk access from the Airport Extreme. I have Time Machine running automatically from two different machines to the same plugged in HD on the Airport Extreme. I get messages indicating that the backup can't be mounted. Once that occurs, I have to reboot the Airport.
Just like Toryn says, once you get Connection Failed, you must reboot the router.

  • Airport Extreme loses connection repeatedly

Not sure if I have a faulty unit or not -
We bought a brand new AE at Best Buy in January, to replace a Cisco router that lost connection about once a week. Now I have a router that loses the connection about 3-4 times a day.
    Here's the set-up -
cable from wall into modem, modem hardwired to AE.
AE is hardwired (ethernet) to desktop (PC)
AE supports about 10-15 other wireless devices in the house (Macs & others)
3-4 times a day the entire network goes down, including the hardwired desktop.
Green light stays on all the time, even when the network is gone.
Unplugging the rebooting the AE restores the network in a matter of minutes, so I know it's the AE and not the modem or cable signal.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Airport extreme loses connection with cellphone wifi

My Sister has a AirPort Extreme MD031LL/A that was bought 4 monthes ago. It has always worked very well. She lives way out of town and can only get Sattelite Internet service, it has always worked great also. 2 weeks ago her Sattelite Internet Provider was bought out and upgraded to an even faster speed. Her iPad has no problems since the change, but her T-Mobile HTC One S that had always worked perfectly on WiFi calling,  (because where she lives, it is all she can get for calls from her home)  only works at times. The phone states it is connected to her home WiFi system, but says it has certificate problems and or it will be connected and she can use her phone to make calls and recieve text, it comes and goes and her signal is great. T-Mobile says it is not on their end and that it is a problem of the phone and her AirPort Extreme communicating with each other. Any help is appreciated.

ok, so I think I've solved the problem. It only took 4 calls to AT&T tech support to figure it out. The reason I was able to use DHCP with a DSL modem is because (and here's the thing they kept forgetting to tell me) the modem is also a router. I know, not really, but it acts like one for all intents and purposes. It keeps the PPPoE in the modem, and works just great if you have ONLY ONE COMPUTER HOOKED UP TO IT. What I had to do was go into the modem settings and make the modem a bridge, basically making the modem what it really is, just a modem. Then I set up my AE as a PPPoE and I have been connected ever since. It also cleared up the NAT problem I was having with my Xbox 360. Anyway, I hope this helps some of the people out there.

  • While streaming music, my airport loses connection, is this typical?

While streaming music through my iPhone, my airport extreme loses connection. Is this typical?  I assume it loses connections at other times, but it most noticeable while streaming music.

It's a sign of a wireless environment that is less than ideal, which can be the result of wireless interference from competing wireless networks, the presence of intervening building materials and other obstructions, or any combination of these factors. They can't all be avoided but you may be able to mitigate their effects.
Streaming music or video is demanding of bandwidth and intolerant of the minor interruptions that go unnoticed when performing simpler networking tasks.

  • Audio interface loses connection

    Hi
I've recently bought myself two audio interfaces: Edirol FA-66 and Mackie Tapco firewire, both with two combo inputs and firewire 400 connection. When i connect either one of them to my macbook pro (2,53 GHz), it works for a while and suddenly loses connection. The sound plays for a few seconds through my internal speakers and most of the time, it reconnects after a couple of seconds back to the audio interface. Could this possibly have anything to do with snow leopard? (I think I've read something about this). Or would it be something else? (I'm thinking of the FW400->FW800 cable I'm using, some kind of problem with the processor,... ).
As I am intending to use my laptop for live performances, this problem really needs to get solved...
I'd be very thankful for any suggestion
    greetings
    Kobe

Well I'm hoping I'll just take it back to the Apple service center and they'll magically fix it (since it's not even a year old!), but I get the feeling I'm going to get fobbed off with some lame excuse, to which they'll get a piece of my mind!
I've tried the Motu 828mk3 on my 5 year old PC running Windows 7 and it works, so I'm doubtful the problem is with the Motu unit. I've tried practically everything... reset the SMC, reset the PRAM, reset the MOTU, plugged in an external firewire drive/hub and chained the MOTU, toggled the optical inputs/outputs and nothing seems to work. The only things I haven't tried (that I can think of) are:
    a) another 800 to 400 firewire cable (I've only just bought this one so I'm loathe to spend extra on another to find out it doesn't solve the problem).
    b) a clean re-install of OSX (think I'll leave that to the Apple guys and gals).
    c) an express card with firewire 400 ports (again I'm loathe to spend money on this unless I KNOW it will solve the problem).

  • AirPort in Intel iMac loses connection and does not see network

I bought an Intel iMac in the summer of '06. I had no problems connecting my airport card to my house wireless network which uses an AirPort Extreme Base Station.
In september I brought my iMac to college and used an AirPort Express as my base station. I had no problems other than that the computer did not automatically reconnect to the network upon start up.
In december I returned home and configured the AirPort Express (located on the main level of the house) to extend the network of the AirPort Extreme (located upstair in the bedroom next to my iMac).
Lately the iMac loses connectivity to the wireless network randomly while the computer is on, even in the middle of using it. Not only does it lose the signal but does not list my network when i click the airport signal icon on the top bar of the screen. Once in a while it will have it listed but will give me an error when trying to connect. The only way I have of fixing the problem is to restart the computer.
I know the airport base station works fine and the network is still there becasue I have a PowerBook G4 that I will put right next to the iMac and the PowerBook will still be connected to the network.
    Can someone help?

I have a very similar problem. My machine's airport connection has always been a little flaky, but it's always gone on working. However, yesterday I turned on WEP 128 bit encription. It now connects for a few minutes and then I see the signal strength gradually die until it goes off completely. There are then two ways to get it back working: 1. close the lid, then open it again; 2. tun off the airport, then turn it on again. When I do that the signal strength suddenly comes on full after about 3 seconds. The G4 iMac I have doesn't suffer from this problem. I am using a netgear access port as the base station.

  • Airport loses connection but still shows 4 full bars

I've got a strange problem I haven't been able to figure out myself.
On my MacBook Core Duo (original 2006) on 10.6.2, my airport loses connection with my wireless router (Linksys WRT54G) after 5-10 minutes of use. My airport still shows a full signal, but I lose all connection (I cannot even see the router itself when I navigate to its IP address in Safari - normally I get the web based configuration panel). If I turn off Airport and then turn it back on again, I get my connection back for another 5-10 minutes.
    I am using WPA encryption.
I get this problem when my computer is far away from the router or very close.
I do not get this problem on our other computers - one Vista desktop and and two XP laptops.
I have no connection problems when I plug my modem directly to the MacBook via ethernet.
My only thought at this point: there are numerous (8-10) other 802.11x networks in my building. I've done my best to choose a free channel, but the best I can do is choose a channel only 1 channel away from others (i.e., choose 7 when others are on 6 and 8). I wonder if signal interference is an issue...but why would all my Windows machines have no problem?
I'm out of ideas at this point - I appreciate any help :)! Thanks!

I am having the SAME exact problem with my Mac. I have a late 2008 white 13" MacBook and it's been upgraded to Snow Leopard and I'm running version 10.6.2. I am wondering if any Apple employees can assist us on this issue or tell us if the impending 10.6.3 upgrade will have a fix for this.
My Airport will be connected to my wireless network and be working fine. As MBaker22 says, after 5 minutes the connection seems fine, the IP is fine, the network is fine and the network works for other laptops and desktops in my house BUT I can't access the Internet. All of a sudden I have no ability to check for software updates, browse the web or do anything that connects to the Internet.
Some other strangeness. When I try to hit the IP of my wireless router in my web browser, it asks me for credentials and then just sits there saying Connecting to 192.168.1.1...
It also only says connecting to www.google.com or www.cnn.com or www.yahoo.com when Airport is behaving this way.
If I plug in my Ethernet cord to my Mac everything works just fine so this is an Airport issue and probably an issue with Snow Leopard? I'm not sure.
Anyway the REALLY weird thing is that I can ping some websites and not others in the terminal when Airport starts behaving this way. That might be because of caching but either way.
Here's a TCPDUMP of my connection on Airport (en1) using Google DNS 8.8.8.8 (but if I use my ISP DNS it still does this):
