Airport, TC and WiFi

I recently purchased the 500GB Time Capsule and everything works well EXCEPT the fact my WIFI capable phone (Samsung Katalyst) that worked with my first generation Airport Extreme AND worked on Apple's WIFI in the store WILL NOT work at home on the new Time Capsule.
I have tried all the encryptions available and even no encryption and the TC would still not let it connect to the network. Again the phone used to connect to my old Airport Extreme and it connects in the Apple store, but will not connect to the TC. I have even tried 802.11g/b only.
A couple of days ago I bought an Airport Extreme and now the phone is able to connect to the network, BUT the AE only has the 7.2.1 firmware update. If I update the Airport Extreme to 7.3.1 is there a way to go back to 7.2.1 IF the phone can not connect with the new firmware?? Also, if the phone connects NOW and is unable to when I update, would that indicate there is a "firmware" issue preventing the phone from connecting to the network??? Conversely, if I update and the phone can still connect then would it be a "hardware" issue, meaning that although they are supposed to be identical, something in the TC's Airport Extreme is different than the standalone?? Please help!

  • Can an older Round Airport Extreme and Airport Express be used on my home WIFI network?

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to a newer one because I was having problems with the older one getting on my home WIFI network.  It had been dropped, but had continued working without any hiccups for five or six months.  Suddenly it won't go online.  It said there was no WIFI hardwae installed.  I suspect that the WIFI antenna connection between the main bdy and the display failed.  Repair options at the Apple Store were iffy, so I just baought the new one.  My Time Machine backup smoothly cloned my old machine onto the new one.
In the "when it rains it pours" category, my Airport Extreme also failed at the same time I began having problems with the old laptop.  Suspecting the hardware was the problem after checking with my ISP, I purchased a new Airport Express at Best Buy.  Using it, I got my WIFI network back up and running.  That's why I figured there was a problem with the older Airport Extreme.  The Airport Extreme was replaced by an Apple Genius at the store, when I purchased the new laptop.  Putting my Home WIFI network back together with the new AE, went fine, but it turned up another problem.  I use an older (pre-N speed) Airport Express to link a YAMAHA digital piano wirelessly to my WIFI.  It can go online directly and download music.  I can also push my iTunes wirelessly through the piano's amplifier and speakers for great sounding stereo.  The problem is my new AE won't recognize my older Airport Express.  I tryied downloading the Airport Utility v. 5.6 as suggested online, but It still won't find the Airport Express hooked up to the piano.
Is there any way to update my earlier Airport Express and also an older Airport Extreme (round)?  The Airport Utility v.5.6 won't recognize them and initialize them.  Any ideas?  I repurposed the new Airport Express I bought to seerve my printer, allowing me to disconnect the USB cable from my iMac.  That's working fine, except my HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 now won't give me two sided printing anymore.  It always something!
    Network consists of:
20" Mid 2007 iMac running Mac OS Lion 10.7.4
New 15" MacBook Pro running Mac OS Lion 10.7.4
HP Officejet Pro 8500 All-in-one Printer
New Airport Extreme attached to DSL Modem
New Airport Express wirelessly attaching my Printer to the network
Old Airport Express (A/B/G) connecting my Yamaha Digital piano (NOT WORKING)
Old Airport Extreme (round) (NOT WORKING)

    Bob,
Thanks for your help.  At this point, I'm seriously considering replacing the older "g" AX with a new "n" model.  For whatever reason, each time I've tried to bring the ols AX bcak online in my network, it only managed to screw up my network.  Using the Airport Utility 5.6 for Lion, I was able to get a green light on the AX, but it still would not go online from my Yamaha digital piano control panel, like it always did before.
Using AUtil 6.0, everything else works, and I'm assuming that setup with a new "n" speed AX, my piano will be able to get back onlune, too.  When I originally set up the AX to link the piano to my WIFI network, I had very little trouble getting it setup.  YAMAHA didn't list the Apple AX in it's list of compatible wireless routers/adapters, but I saw no reason that it wouldn't work.  As I said it was a reasonably easy setup the first time, and it has worked for several years with no problems.
It's not the cost of buying the new AX that bugs me, it's the fact that I can't figure out why it won't work now when it did before.  It was working fine with my old AE based WIFI network, even after upgrading the my computers to the Lion OS.  I used to be reasonably savvy with Apple technology, having spent the last 15 years of my teaching career (1987-2001) as the tech liason for the schools where I worked, supporting first Apple II's, then Macs, and networked buildings.  After eleven years of retirement, I find it harder and harder to keep up as the technology just keeps evolving.  I'm trying, but it's not easy!  Any and all help is appreciated!

    Hey there,
During startup of my MacBook Pro, Captive Network Assistant checks 249 different airport, hotel and other misc. WiFi hotspots. Proabaly adding a good 3 minutes to my startup time. ***? This all started while I was on extended layover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
I thought Captive Network Assistant was an iOS thing. No iOS devices in my home or office. Here's a portion of the console log during startup.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

What kind of wireless router are you using? more importantly which protocol are you connecting with? Are you and wife connecting using the 2.4Ghz band? or do you have a dual band router that offers the 5GHZ band?  Are you both connecting vie 802.11 a/b/g or n?
The best thing to do is to go into SYSTEM PREFERENCES and select NETWORK, then select AIRPORT and click on the ADVANCED button.
Under the AirPort tab you should delete all the preferred networks and only add back in your network with the proper security settings and passwords.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard while clicking on the airport icon at the top on your macbook pro. you'll seesome data that will tell you what band and mode you're connecting at, as well as in an indication of signal strength (RSSI) if you write down and post back that information it'll tell us what's going on.

  • I have a second generation airport express and i cant manage to extend my wifi

I have a second generation airport express and i cant manage to extend my wifi

So im going to need another airport express to extend my wifi wireless
    That is correct.
One AirPort will connect to your router with a short Ethernet cable and be configured to "create" a wireless network.
The second AirPort will be configured to "extend" a wireless network.

  • Will be renting a condo with an ethernet cord.  Can I plug this into Airport Express and have wifi?

I will be renting a condo with an ethernet cord available.  Can I simply plug this into my Airport express and have wifi for computers, iphone, and printer?

As long as the Ethernet cord leads to a router connected to the Internet, then yes, it will do all that.
What you want to do is the reason a lot of people bring an Airport Express with them on trips. They plug it into the hotel room Ethernet port and bam, their laptops and phones have wireless Internet.
If you don't already have a password on your Airport Express, now would be a good time to add one, especially if Internet usage is metered. Just to keep others from getting onto your network.

  • HT4587 My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to wife, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?

My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to WIFI, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do?  Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone.  I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address.  I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default.  It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence.  Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

  • Internet works, but I have an exclamation mark instead of AirPort connection and cannot connect to my WiFi.. PLEASE HELP!

Internet works, but I have an exclamation mark instead of AirPort connection and cannot connect to my WiFi.. PLEASE HELP!

When you see an exclamation point in the Wi-Fi menu, from the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Network
Click the Assist me button and select Assistant. Follow the prompts. You may get a warning that Wi-Fi is not available, that you're too far from the base station, or that you're using the wrong password.
Assuming that you've ruled out those possibilities, restart the computer and try again. If there's no change, click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane and authenticate, if necessary. From the Location menu at the top of the window, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click  Applyand test.
If there's still no connection, and if you have control of the router, compare its settings to Apple's recommendations. Some third-party routers may be incompatible in 802.11b/g/n radio mode. Try setting the mode to 802.11n only.

  • I have AirPort Extreme and cannot connect to the internet with a land line but the WiFi works

I have an AirPort Extreme and have been using for several months successfully, but as of two weeks ago, the line that I have hooked up to my desktop no longer provides internet service, but the WiFi works fine for the I-Pad and I-Pod.
I have checked with my service provider and my modem works successfully hooked up the the AirPort extreme or directly to the PC.  When I am hooked in from the modem directly to my PC, I have internet for my desktop, but of course no WiFi.
If I connect the Modem to the Router and the router to my desktop, I have WiFi, but no internet service to my desktop.
I have replaced the network cable but to no avail.
    Any suggestions?

It appears that there may be something amiss with the Ethernet switch that is built-in the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) or its configuration settings may be incorrect. I assume that you also tried using the other LAN ports on the AEBSn and the outcome was the same ... no Internet access via a wired connection.
One thing to try is to change the Ethernet adapter settings on the PC. It is possible that its current settings may be appropriate when connected directly to the Internet modem, but may be off for connecting to the AEBSn. If your PC's Ethernet adapter has options to control Speed, Duplex, & MTU, I would change these to the following respectively: 1000 Mbps, Full duplex, & 1500

  • Issue Airport TC and Airport Express wifi

    Hello,
Any help much appreciated for this configuration that doesn't work:
I have the following conf connected via cable:
ISP modem --> NetGear Router FVS338  --> Airport TC + Airport Express () + NAS (qnap)
The Airport TC is plugged via the WAN port and works has a HD backup.
The Airport Express is plugged via the WAN port and works has primary wifi network (bridge mode + create a wifi network)
    Both have automatic DHCP
Both have the Bridge mode ON.
I want to expend my wifi network by:
    -  turning ON the Aiport TC's wifi (expend the actual wifi network)
    -  setting up the exact same SSID name + same password as the Airport express.
Once i have done this i completely lose my internet connection, as if turning ON the wifi on the TC was messing with all the configuration.
Once i have turn OFF the wifi, everything goes back to normal !!!!!!
I have than try to connect both the AirPort TC and the AirPort Express via the LAN port, but it doesn't solve my issue.
Once the wifi in ON (on the AirPort TC) i lose my internet connection!!!!
Has anyone got the same issue?
    What do i do wrong?
    Many thanks for your help

I created a New Network on both the Airport with the same SSID and same password:
    It seems to work perfectly.
My LAN network works fine and i can connect via wifi in my house.
Do you think that could solve my issue? Or it is better to have one airport in "Create a Network" and the other Airport (express) in Extend network mode?
Do you think the 2 wifi network (same SSID) can scramble each other?
This is far superior method.. known as roaming. It is where I would have suggested you go.
The extend wireless is only for situation where you cannot run ethernet. It is much poorer.
The 2 wifi networks are fine ..  in most cases. They have same name and same security but they should have one difference and that is wireless channels. With both set on auto they simply should sort themselves into using sufficiently different channels to not have a problem (or the distance is so great they literally cannot see each other).
A very good idea to use Apple's wireless diagnostics btw so you can see what channels everything is on.
It is available in Lion (though hidden) and was readily available from Mountain Lion on.
    About Wireless Diagnostics
There is a lot more tools if you open the utility.
You can see at a glance all the different AP's in your area by doing a scan and can track performance of what you connect you as well.
I forgot to tell you that i have few Sonos devices (Play1, ...) plugged into my network.
    Do you know that system?
Have you ever heard about any issues related to compatibility between Apple Airports and Sonos devices?
Sonos stuff can have issues. I don't use it but some people have posted their problems.. If you run into problems then just post the details.. I would recommend as much detail as possible in a new thread with Sonos in the title.
The new apple routers must be on latest firmware. If you have earlier products then firmware is a problem. It depends. Latest in that case is not always greatest. The particular problem was spanning tree protocol, which is essential to the Sonos but Apple messed up. (since their own products didn't use it).
You can simply do a search here (wireless forum area) for sonos.
here is typical one I handled earlier.
Re: Sonos, Time Capsule and volume permissions
The other thing mentioned in the thread there is Sonos is very much a windows network device.. odd when it is so Apple iTunes orientated. Please do not use Apple type names.. for anything. Use all network names that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. That gets you around most of the problems that Sonos support cannot figure out.

  • Recently bought airport Extreme and have connected the device to the modem. WIFI works. However when I connect the LAN port to a switch I do not see the LAN printer and my NAS. Which setting do I miss?

I have installed my Airport Extreme and have conencted it directly to a modem. WIFI works fine. However I do not see my LAN network (printer. NAS,..).
    Analysis:
Scen#1: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a switch (as input) and connect the other LAN devices also to the switch, those LAN devices do not have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the Airport Extreme I cannot find my LAN printer and other devices.
Scen#2: When I connect the LAN port of the Airport Extreme to a router X (as input) and connect the router X to the same switch, and the LAN devices to the switch, those LAN devices do have access to the internet. Also connecting the iPAD with WIFI to the router X I can find my LAN printer and other devices in the LAN network.
Question what has impacted the behaviour of the Airport Extreme, not to detect the devices in the LAN network. Why is the use of a switch directly behind the Airport Extreme not working (no internet access for the other devices and Airport Extreme is not the basis station for the LAN network)?

Your scenario #1 is a correct configuration and should work. It seems as though your Extreme is not acting as a router as I believe you intend.
Most likely, you need to reset your modem. Power it down and let it rest for a few moments. Some need longer than others. Then, I recommend you "hard reset" your Extreme (see below) and configure it again, after the modem has been reset. From then on do not change what is connected to your modem without powering it down first.
Once configured, confirm your Extreme's wireless network works as expected and that your iPad and every other wireless device can load web pages. Then, connect the printer directly to one of the Extreme's LAN ports and confirm that it works as well. After that it should work equally well with a switch between it and the Extreme, as should every other wired device connected to the switch. This assumes your switch is an unmanaged device requiring no specific configuration.
Scenario #2: Having a router connected downstream of another is not a normal configuration, so don't pursue that as a solution. It will only distract you from determining the problem. If you want to repurpose Router X as another device do so only after everything else is working to your satisfaction.
To "hard reset" an AirPort Base Station: make sure it's powered up, then press and hold its tiny reset button and keep it depressed for five to ten seconds, long enough for its LED to flash amber rapidly. Release the reset button. Then, the LED will glow amber steadily for about a minute. Then, it will flash amber, slowly, about once every second or two, waiting for you to configure it with AirPort Utility.

  • Can time capsule connect to ethernet through airport extreme and then send wifi on a different band ?

    Hope this makes sense.
At the moment, an Airport Extreme (n) is connected to a single wall outlet by ethernet and sends wifi signals at both 2,4 and 5 GHz.
I would like to add a Time Capsule (also n), position it immediately next to or above this Airport Extreme and connect to the AE with a very short ethernet cable (so not extending the Extreme's wifi signal since that could reduce the signal's strength by half).
This way both are connected to the internet by ethernet (the AE directly to the wall outlet, and the TC to the AE's ethernet out), hence both should be able to send wifi at full signal strength.
In order to achieve full wifi strength I would then set the Extreme to (only) send at 2,4 GHz and the Capsule to (only) send at 5 GHz.
Please note that the house has an open (loft style) floorplan, so there's no reason to position the AE and the TC at a distance from each other for wifi reach throughout the house.
Dear Bob, what do you think? I've been reading up but didn't find a directly related post.
Is this the right way to go about it?
    KInd regards.

I would like to add a Time Capsule (also n), position it immediately next to or above this Airport Extreme
The position immediately above is poor.. and next to each other is even worse.. you are blocking the antennas from one side or the other..
Please  use a patch lead of around 2M (6feet) min.. and place them that far apart.
very short ethernet cable (so not extending the Extreme's wifi signal since that could reduce the signal's strength by half).
Having the devices link wirelessly causes the speed to drop by half which is caused by double hop wireless.. it does not reduce signal actually.. but you can have interference issues.
The gap between two radio transmitters is so they don't flood the receiver on the unit next to them.. It has nothing to do with the room. If I stick two transmitter/receivers next to each other they need some space. It is also to give full access to the antennas which are spaced around the sides on the older N models.
You also cannot turn off one band.. If they are dual band models.. ie Gen3 AE and later. Gen2 TC and later.. they are permanently dual band. You cannot do anything about it.
You can simply set the channels.. although auto should work.. there are 11 channels for 2.4ghz.. set one to channel 1 and the other to 11.
At 5ghz there are heaps of channels.. set one to 36 and the other to 149.. or whatever is available.
You are not going to achieve anything much doing this unless you have more clients than bandwidth.. ie both boxes can fully service internet to up to 10 clients.. maybe more if each band is used properly.. you will gain nothing using two routers next to each other.

  • WDS wired and wifi with mixed airports

    Hi,
I've been having a heck of a time with 'fixing' a mixed wired and wifi network. 2 days so far and it's still not how I want it.
It was working okay, then I started getting errors with IP's being duplicated, so I started over.
    Here's what I have :
    Orange France Livebox (dsl router)
    ABS-g (dual ethernet)
    ABS-n (pre-mixed g/n environment)
    2 AExpress-g
    Netgear Switch
    Original setup :
livebox to netgear switch, feeding wired ABS-g (dual ethernet) and wired ABS-n (pre-mixed g/n environment). ABS-g acting as Main for WDS and feeding ABS-n via the switch, plus 2 AExpress-g via wifi.
It all worked for about 2 months. Then the problem with duplicate IP addresses.
So now the setup I have is :
Livebox wired to ABS-n, which then feeds to Netgear Switch to LAN wired, plus, 2 AExpress-g on WDS via wifi.
    This works.
    Here's the problem :
I want to extend the wifi network via wired, because there is some distance between the base stations. HOWEVER. Whenever I connect one of the base stations, which is configured as WDS Remote, via wired, I instantly loose my internet connection ... everywhere. Wired and wifi.
The base stations get self assigned addresses and I have to take the cable out of the ABS-Remote and then, take the cable (from the Livebox to the ABS-n) out of the ABS-n and put it directly into my Mac, to get the connection back.
I have restarted, zeroed everything many times. Finally I have narrowed the problem down to trying to have a wired connection to one of the WDS remotes. As soon as I plug a cable into a WDS Remote, I loose the connection.
Can anyone suggest what I might be doing wrong, or how I could reconfigure to enable either the ABS-g (dual ethernet) or one of the ABSExpress's to operate via a wired connection, thus much more effectively extending the wifi network.
    Any help/pointers much appreciated.
    Grant

Please take a look at this Apple Support reference to see if it will help you identify your AirPort: Identifying AirPort Hardware
I have seen that link elsewhere on this board. Unfortunately it's out of date. Yes you can go to the first page and visually identify your airport unit, but there is no model number next to the pictures. Clicking the 'More Info' link returns an error that the page does not exist.
The same holds true for the Apple pdf about designing Airport Networks. Dead link.
In a roaming network, ALL of the AirPorts must be connected by Ethernet or be on the same Ethernet subnet. Adding the Ethernet switch to one the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station's (AEBSn) LAN ports will provide the additional wired ports for the AEBS and the AXs.
Since you have the AEBS connected by Ethernet to the Livebox, all of the AirPorts must all be reconfigured as bridges. Each will broadcast their own wireless network, but this network will have the same Network Name and use the same encryption setting. The only difference is that each AirPort must operate on a radio channel at least 3-5 channels away from that used by next nearest AirPort to prevent interference.
Having spent another hour or so, reconfiguring again, I've understood, that I cannot have an unwired ABS on a roaming network, even if it would appear to be on the same subnet. It gets no IP and is therefore lost in space.
So it would seem that anyone wishing to include some wired and some unwired ABS in a single 'seamless' network, needs to make a WDS for all the unwired ones ... and a Roaming network (with the same network name and password as the Main ABS network) for the wired ones.
This is what I have done and it looks to be working perfectly. All are in Bridge mode and all are on Automatic Channel ... and I note that the Airport Utility automatically gave a very distant channel to the wired ABS.
The network appears to be stable and fast. Phew.
As an aside ... it's a shame that the Airport Utility, whilst clearly a very clever piece of software, doesn't have more helpful explanations of what is going on. The wording is often ambiguous at best. A teeny bit more explanation would have saved me hours and hours of wasted time.

  • Airport connects then disconnects and Wifi stop's working.

This just started happening a day ago. I'll open my macbook (which it's on sleep) and I'll go on the Internet, five-ten minutes into me being on the Internet it will freeze and won't load. I click on my wifi connection and i'll click on the wifi i'm connected to and it will tell me to give a password, which I type in and it say's connection timeout. Also sometimes when I open my laptop there won't be any wifi bar's it's just empty, so I click on it and it will say airport off, so I try to click airport on and it won't let me. I have to restart the computer for me to get on the Internet. I've looked at a few different thing's online and it seems it's happening to other people but I don't understand how to fix it. Can anyone help? thank you.

    Hi bobmyron,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. Based on what you stated, it sounds like the Mac will connect and disconnect from two different networks. I would recommend that you read these articles, they may be helpful in troubleshooting your issue.

I have an older plug in version of Airport Express and am trying to connect it to my wifi network to boost coverage but it is not connecting to my network.

What is the make & model of the wireless router that you are trying to "boost" with the AirPort Express? Is your Express an 802.11g or 802.11n model? Is the connection between routers going to be a wired or wireless one?
