Airport/Time Capsule dropping network in 5GHz only mode

I have a Time Capsule configured for 802.11n only 5GHz secured with WPA/Personal I think. My black MacBook is constantly dropping connections. Go to airport menu and my network cannot be found. This happens even when I am right next it. Have to restart TC or wait several minutes for it to hopefully appear again. I just bought an Aluminum MacBook and I have the same problem.
When I switch to B/G/N compatible everything is fine. I really wanted 5GHz to increase speeds accessing Time Machine backups.
Any suggestions? Is this just a recent firmware issue?
Thanks

You can change the 5G only channel from "automatic" to several other choices by holding down the option key when clicking on the channel drop down icon.

  • New Airport Time Capsule Dropping Wifi/Internet with 7.7.1

Last week I bought a new Airport 2TB Time Capsule and had everything up and running within minutes. However, less than 24 hours later, the wifi signal started dropping devices all around the house. It started with the AppleTV, and eventually dropped our iPhones and iPad as well. The problem is one I've seen on these forums before (however, not with this new model).
I since exchanged it, and the new model is having the identical issues.
Basically, the problem is 1 of 3 things:
    1. You'll look down at your iPhone (or whatever device that is wirelessly connected), and see a full wifi signal. However, you'll have lost access to the Internet. Using the AirPort app won't find the Airport Time Capsule. Sometimes turning off wifi on the iPhone and turning it back on fixes the issue, sometimes the Airport Time Capsule needs to be restarted.
    2. The AirPort Time Capsule stops broadcasting SSID at random intervals. Even when standing right next to it, there is no way to join the network.
    3. The Internet connection drops in the middle of a browsing session (usually while using an iPhone).
On both devices (the original new one, and the replacement exchange), I immediately ran the firmware update. So, I'm thinking this could be a firmware issue.
This router replaces a Linksys e3000 that was working flawlessly. It's connected to a Cox Cable Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 modem (modem only, no router). The AirPort Time Capsule runs in WPA2 protected mode. It's running DHCP and NAT, and 2.4 and 5ghz are currently running the same network name (although I've tried separating them to no effect).
I am at my wits end. I find it hard to believe that both of these routers are defective. And I also find it hard to believe that I'm doing something wrong in the setup of this simple device, considering I've been working with all kinds of very complicated routers for over a decade without this kind of problem.
So I come to you, community, for help!
    Thank you in advance!

I don't have one.. but your testing is conclusive.. the TC is not stable on this firmware.. Apple will no doubt fix it .. I think their secrecy in marketing leads to less than adequate testing.. you are expecting to buy a mature product.. remember this is a ground breaker.. this is the first all new design since Gen1 TC.. all previous models used Maxell processor and chipset.. albeit with various wireless cards.. now it is broadcom.. processor and wireless.. this also runs apple written firmware.
Broadcom OEM firmware.(linux and hence open source) supplied to all manufacturers of products based on the chipset.. well that would be just wrong for apple... it has to be done in NETBSD,, so it is not open source.. the very thought.. open source.. . that would give everyone access to controls apple don't want you to have.. http setup even.. couldn't allow that.. so apple have to write the firmware from scratch and to match all those apple protocols. Hence where they are now now.
And your role is beta tester.. didn't you know.
Return it and stick with your Linksys (broadcom, Linux open source)  until Gen 6 TC comes out.
Unless you like the bleeding edge.

  • Airport Time Capsule - wich network

    Hi,
I just installed my Airport Time Capsule, and so created a new network. So now I have two available networks (both protected): one that I had before I installed the Time Capsule and an additional one after installation of the TC. The question is what is the exact difference between the two networks?
Can I fully use the Time Capsule as I use my first network?
And there is a loss of speed or other disadvantage as I now always connect to the new network (since installation TC)?
    Thanks for your reply!
    Bart

You're right, the TC is in bridge mode! So if I understand you correctly, these setting provides a network that is simular to my 'basic' network? (but despite this bridge mode, it seems I can still create a secure guest network)
Seems like it can.. but it really doesn't.. that is one confusion.. whilst the setup is there for guest in bridge it doesn't actually work.. Apple is just tricking you..
I can switch the bridge mode only to 'DHCP and NAT', but i'm not that technical to understand what it means or what I've to do. When i try this setting, the Airport-configuration reports a 'double use of NAT'. What can I do to avoid this? (see printscreens)
Don't use the TC in router mode.. which is what DHCP and NAT means.. that is wrong.. you are using bridge which is right.. if you want to use the TC in router mode, then you should change the cable modem to bridge mode. You will need to contact the ISP for info about this.. some modems are locked and others are restricted .. so you might have no choice.
Double NAT causes many issues and should be avoided. It simply means you have two routers one after the other.. each router has a NAT.. this is network address translation.. one is bad but required.. two is terrible.
    I've a 60 Mbps broadband internet connection.
My modem is a Wireless modem 3.0 (DOCSIS) (type: Motorola_SVG6540E).
Connect to the TC by ethernet.. are you having speed issues..
If so use a crossover cable between the modem and the TC or use 10/100 switch.. cheapest 5 port you can buy will be fine.. Apple routers are having some issues on the WAN port.
If it measures fine by ethernet and you have wireless problems.. then set the channels manually for 2.4ghz.. on AC you cannot change 5ghz..
You may not be able to get full speed via the wireless.. that is a problem that should be fixed as firmware is updated.

  • Airport time capsule private network configuration

I am trying to use the airport timecapsule in a very non-standard way, and struggling to get the configuration to work.  I need the ability to have the time capsule (airport router) stand alone, with NO connection to the Internet or other network source (no DHCP server on the WAN side).  I want to have a static IP for the WAN side, where I can define a compatible static IP on a laptop such that one laptop (possibly more in the future) is connected on the WAN side, and additional laptops are connected on the LAN side, and they can talk to each other.  Attempting to configure this in the Airport utility consistently gets me an error message that the router address is not compatible with the WAN IP address.
Can somebody share insight about the following configuration items under the Internet tab of the airport utility :
IPv4 address   (if I assign this 192.168.2.1 .... does that mean the WAN IP port on the time capsule has that IP address  ??)
Subnet mask  (does this apply to the LAN IP, WAN IP or both ??)
router address (If I assign this 192.168.1.1 I see impact in the network tab, where the DHCP address range is populated, so I am expecting this applies to the LAN side only ??)
Using the above values, I am NOT able to update the time capsule, it complains about IP address compatibility.
My goal is for the WAN side to be 192.168.2.x and the LAN side to be 192.168.1.x  ...... where the Airport Time Capsule is an "island" just serving that small population of hosts

I timed out for editing.. why Apple do you have 5min edit window.. would it hurt for 60min.. seesshhh..
Let me rephrase what I knew was right but could not explain.. There is the world of difference between a NAT router and a proper pro level router.
NAT routers do things one way.. it is designed to reach the internet from your LAN.. It uses a trick.. NAT.. ie address translation..
Many LAN Private IP addresses Masquerade as a single Public IP.
A proper router can route packets both ways between different domains/subnets/etc.
This is why incoming packets to your network have to be allowed in via port forwarding unless you have a link from internal request from a computer.
In other words people cannot access your file shares on your LAN without you opening the port forwarding and making it available.. whereas you can access any site on the internet and download files.
    So back to your example..
You can access files on your server side LAPTOP plugged into the WAN side.. That is trivial and will work fine. You don't need ICS which I suggested.
And it means you can always access files one way.. so if you have one computer that you need to access many other computers.. The many others can be WAN and the one computer LAN.. (opposite to the way you think)..
Here. Try it yourself.. This works.
I plugged in a laptop and set it as 192.168.2.10 statically.
    LAN side setup.
Right, plugged in a computer.. and it got the first available IP 192.168.1.2
From this computer I can ping across the NAT.. to the WAN port of the TC and the WAN computer.
    ping 192.168.2.1
    PING 192.168.2.1 (192.168.2.1): 56 data bytes

But from WAN side I cannot reach the computer on LAN..
Ping from 192.168.2.10 failed to reach 192.168.1.1 (LAN side of the TC).. or 192.168.1.2 (computer plugged in)..
It still failed even though I set 192.168.1.2 as default server.. again this is not surprising as I would need to work a bit more.. but if I like ran HTML server from Mac on LAN, then I should be able to access it from WAN.. same as internet connected computer will work.. but you can only access the computer to which the ports have been mapped.
So why it doesn't work.. Because it is a NAT router.
How to get it working.. Buy a true router.. or a cheap router that runs third party like dd-wrt that offers gateway mode (NAT router) or true router mode..
    See http://www.patrikdufresne.com/en/multiple-subnets-routing-with-dd-wrt/
Apple just do not build their routers with this flexibility...
And sorry .. I am getting old and the brain can take a day or two to click in.. that is why I experiment myself.. as soon as I tried I realised my mistake and why it won't work in exactly the way you want.. or at least I am assuming so.
It is relatively easy however to get multiple computers talking to each other from different LAN subnets.. just buy a managed switch.. these are cheap now for 8 port smart switch.. easy to set vlan with different subnets.

  • Airport time capsule losing network connection

Running a time capsule with airport utility v. 6.3.2 and it is losing wi-fi and ethernet connection daily. I have had the unit for three years or so, and while it used to happen once or twice a year, its happening daily now. Unplugging/replugging gets it going every time. I have three  Macs and 5 iphones connected.

It may be possible that your Time Capsule is failing. However, before considering replacing it, I would suggest that you contact your ISP and have them run a "line check" between their service and the Internet modem. Even if this check proves good have them replace the modem, especially if it is more than two years old.
If after all this, you still have the issue with the Time Capsule, I would recommend that you take it to your local Apple Store to have them take a look.

  • Airport Time Capsule/Air Express Networking Issue

All of a sudden none of my wireless devices will connect to my network (2 iPhone 5's, 1 iPhone4S and an iPad2). I have a Motorola Surfboard cable modem  attached to a Linksys router. Hardwired to the Linksys router is an Apple Airport Time Capsule in bridge mode centrally located in the home to create a wireless network and a Mac mini in the kitchen. Hardwired to the Airport Time Capsule is another Mac mini in the family room and a Windows PC in the walkout. To extend the wireless network I have two Airport Express units at opposite ends of the home. When I use the Airport Utility both of the express units and the Airport Time Capsule will report which wireless clients are currently attached to them, and the clients show wifi as being available with full bars. However, when I try to use any app requiring network all we get is the spinning wheel. If I turn off wifi on the clients LTE & 3G works fine. I have shut down and sequentially started the network up beginning with the modem several times, leaving the system off for longer intervals each time. The DNS servers and domain name are correct and I have even initiated a DHCP lease renewal and restarted the clients with no help. I am guessing my Airport Time Capsule has failed but in no way that is obvious to me. Has anyone had a wireless failure like this? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

This is a follow up from my own post. I factory reset the Airport Time Capsule and the two Airport Express units and re-setup the wireless network leaving the Airport Time Capsule set to 802.11 N (802.11 b/g compatible) and the two Airport Express units extending the first; the network acted the same. I then changed the Airport Time Capsule to 802.11 N (only 5 GHz) and everything works as it used to. I can change it back to "b/g compatible" and it fails, and back to "only 5 GHz" and it works. It would seem the 2.4 GHz radio has failed in a rather odd way. The good thing is my wireless network is working without me having to layout some cash for new hardware. We will see how long the 5 GHz radio lasts, it is a gen 1 Time Capsule. For now all is well.

  • Link Airport Express to an AirPort Time Capsule to use Airplay?

I am thinking about getting an 2GB AirPort Time Capsule. I use the Airplay feature on my Airport Express that is not part of the AirPort Time Capsule and that is the only reason I have not replaced the Airport Express with the Airport Time Capsule. Has anyone had any experience in setting up a these two units to do what they do together? Any potential problems linking these two units together?

If your intent is to use the new Time Capsule as your "main" Internet router, and then, use the Express for iTunes streaming this can be done without any real issues.
Please check out the following Apple Support article on how to configure an AirPort Express for iTunes.

  • How to set up AirPort + Time Capsule On the Same Network but make it so only i use it?

Ok so i am planning on getting the AirPort + Time Capsule in a few weeks, and i have seen many peole talk about how there is a right way and wrong way to set it up because apperently the bad way makes it run slow? Well i have two questions, one is how do i set it up the right way to use it to the full potential to use the new beamforming feature? And my second question which is kind of a problem is that I have internet already but my other brothers use it and i told them about pitching in buy it and they dont want to because they think its pointlesss, so what i want to know is if I can connect it to my existing wi-fi but at the same time like create a diffrent network so that only i can use it? (ex. have my wifi, 2WIRE123 for example, and then some how connect the ethernet cable to the airport + time caplsule and create a new network like 2WIRE124 so they would both basiaclly be using the same internet connection but separated to 2 diffrent networks?) Thank You.

so what i want to know is if I can connect it to my existing wi-fi but at the same time like create a diffrent network so that only i can use it?
    Sorry, but no.
If you can connect the AirPort to the 2Wire router using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, then you can configure the AirPort to create a new wireless network with its own wireless network name and password.

  • Using airport time capsule to create an internet connected network from pre existing wifi network

i bought an airport time capsule for college. I bought it to create a network for my dorm room so that I could take the pre existing wifi from the school and make my own mini network that I can hook my other stuff up to. Problem is that I don't have an ethernet hook up in my room so the network would have to be created from a wifi network rather that a ethernet hook up. Is this still possible? Alternate suggestions? I am afraid of either the college network blocking users from communication with other devices via the wifi, or the fact that my printer would be on a huge network for all to screw with.

    Is this still possible?
NO, it won't work. Apple only works with apple.
    Alternate suggestions?
I am sure your college has rules about not running your own wifi networks.. but anyway.. that is up to you.. the Apple TC cannot turn off 2.4ghz which would be handy.. so the only way to do this following the rules is ethernet. You can run a full network standalone on ethernet. And still use wireless for internet.
If you want to use wireless standalone this is also possible but you need to connect a second wifi USB dongle your Mac so you can have two networks at once.. You can use an express to connect to the college wireless and bridge that to the TC by ethernet.. then use the TC to create your own network.. since you cannot turn off 2.4ghz I guess how long the College IT people take to track you down should be hours. If you could just use 5ghz it would probably be ok.

  • My Airport Time Capsule only works when I turn off and turn on, but I think this may end up with the unit. What can this happening and how to solve?

    Time Capsule Airport
Hello to all, good day, sorry my english google, but it is the tool I have at the moment. I'm having trouble with my Time Capsule Airport, I made all the settings according to the manual, but there has been a connection problem with my iMac. When I finish my work I turn off the imac and then again when they return to work and care, it can not connect to Time Capsule Airport, making it impossible to remove the files and make back up by Time Machine only works when I turn off and turn on the Airport Time Capsule , but I think this may end up with the unit. What can this happening and how to solve? Thank you.
Obrigado.

This is easier to do with pictures perhaps.. since we do not share a common language and machine translation leaves a lot to be desired.
In the airport utility bring up your Time Capsule.
    Simply post the screenshots here.
    So here is mine.
Click on the Edit button and give us the Internet and Wireless and Network tab..
    eg.
Please also make sure you are set to ipv6 in your wireless or ethernet .. whichever is used.. and do tell which.
This is wifi in your computer.
    The following are important..
DO not use long names with spaces and non-alphanumeric names.
Use short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    eg TC name. TCgen5
    Wireless name TCwifi
Use WPA2 Personal security with 10-20 character pure alphanumeric password.
read apple instructions to help with TM and TC.. they did finally admit it has issues in Mavericks.
OS X Mavericks: Time Machine problems
Mount the TC manually in finder.
    AFP://TCgen5.local
When asked for the password .. that is the disk access password and save it in the keychain.
    Reset Time Machine

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • How to use AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only?

I have a new AirPort Time Capsule 3TB, now I want to use my AirPort Time Capsule 2TB as an external storage hard drive only, how do I it?
I would like to  connect the AirPort Time Capsule 2TB directly to my Mac Pro. using OS X 10.7.5.
I have erase disk and reset the 2TB to factory default, after that, I cannot make it to connect to my Mac.  Please help.

The 2TB Time Capsule needs to connect to your 3TB Time Capsule using a wired Ethernet connection.
Connect from a LAN <--> port on the 3 TB Time Capsule to the WAN "O" port on the 2 TB Time Capsule and configure the 2TB Time Capsule in Bridge Mode and turn off the wireless function on the device as well.
Once that is done, you can connect your Mac directly to the 2TB Time Capsule using another Ethernet cable, or your Mac can connect to the network using the normal wireless network, if you prefer.

I am using SURPLUSMETER I am also using Apple Airport Time Capsule as my Router that is connected to my Satellite dish Internet Modem ... Now on the Surplusmeter I have the option for PPP Modem . Ethernet Port , Airport , Network Card , & Adaptor .
Which one can I use properly to monitor all the wireless Devices in my hous

Actually, none of the options will do what you are looking for it to do. That is because, this application only monitors the traffic from the device it is hosted on. That would also mean that you would have to run a copy on each computer that will access the Internet on your network; note their individual usages, and then, combine them to get an idea of the total usage.
However, if you are only interested in the amount of Wi-Fi traffic that only your computer is seeing, then the "AirPort Network Card" option would be the correct choice.

    Very very poorly..
It can join a wireless network..
    See instructions here.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5719954?tstart=0
End result is super slow wireless connection to the TC and all packets pass through the hotspot so expect internet to drop to nothing while you are backing up.
