Airport time capsule fan runs continuously

My airport time capsule fan runs continously

I am assuming that you have one of the new 802.11ac Time Capsules ... correct? If so, the internal fan on these base stations are thermally controlled and would run when required.
This would, most likely, mean one of at least two things: 1) The ambient temperature around the TC is too high, or 2) The thermal circuit that controls the fan is faulty.
Be sure that you are providing adequate space around the TC for proper cooling and that you are placing it on a flat surface as the fan exhaust is on the bottom of the unit.

I have just got an Apple Airport time capsule to back up my one year old iMac......how do I do it? I have tried putting an ethernet cable into the time capsule and to my sky hub, all I get is a flashing amber light, can anyone help I am a silver surfer not used to Apple products, but love them, plus I don't understand half of the jargon....HELP please

Apple's Setup Guide for the Time Capsule is pretty simple and clear for most users, and you don't indicate at what point or step that you are getting stuck.
So, please go to page 8 in your Setup Guide to review the topic of Plugging In Your AirPort Time Capsule.
The Sky hub will likely have 4 Ethernet <--> ports on the back of the device. Pick any one that you want and connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the port that you choose.
Then, connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN (circle of dots) port as shown in the Setup Guide.
Continuing with the instructions on page 8 of the Setup Guide, power up the Time Capsule by connecting the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule to a wall AC jack.
Note that the instructions indicate that the indicator light will be solid amber during startup, and it will change to blinking amber during the setup. The light will remain blinking amber until you have configured the Time Capsule at which time the light will turn green.
Next, go to page 12 of the Setup Guide to see the information to Use your Mac or iOS device to set up your AirPort Time Capsule.
You indicated in your tag line that you were using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), and since that will exceed the minimum requirement of a Mac using OS X (10.7.5) as noted in the guide, you can use your Mac to set up the Time Capsule.
Continuing with the instructions on page 12 of the Setup Guide......
    1. Open AirPort Utility on your Mac.  It is located as follows:  Finder (the smiley face on the dock) > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    2. Select your AirPort Time Capsule and click Continue. You won't be able to do this, but read further......If you do not see the AirPort Time Capsule that you want to configure, choose it from the WiFi status menu in the menu bar, at the top of the screen.
So, clicking on the WiFi icon will yield a small window that looks like this:
The example below shows an AirPort Extreme.  You will see Time Capsule on your screen. Click on Time Capsule.
When you click on Time Capsule, that will get the setup wizard going. it will take a minute to analyze the network, then display a screen that looks similar to the illustration below, except that you will see a picture of a Time Capsule on your screen
    3. Continuing with the Setup Guide.......Follow the onscreen prompts to create a new network
Network Name...........Type in a simple name that you want to call your network. Do not use the suggested name.
Base Station Name....Type in a simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Mine is TC, for example.
Password...................Type in a password that will be used for both the network and the Time Capsule.  Write that down.
Verify..........................Type in the password again to Verify
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup  Complete, click Done.
The Time Capsule is now set up and it will display a green light.

  • AirPort Time Capsule not connecting to hardwired Internet

I'm trying to help my sister set up her brand new AirPort Time Capsule, and running into the issue of the machine not being able to establish a connection to the Internet. When connected via Ethernet to the wall outlet, her MacBook Pro connects just fine. The Ethernet cable functions properly, and there is a live Internet connection.
I have power cycled the laptop and the AirPort several times, to no avail. The biggest issue I can see is that my sister's Internet is "hardwired" throughout her apartment building, so there is no modem in her apartment. She just plugs into the wall and theoretically is good to go. She had no issues with her old Netgear router.
Is there anything we can do to solve this problem without trying to convince the management company to reset the modem for her (I assume there is one, or several, somewhere in the building)?
    Thanks!

That would most likely be the IP from the AE..
She would need to use the iOS version of the airport utility or the Mac version to actually see the WAN IP.
But you can fairly easily move the IP of the AE so it should function in a manner that is identical to the Netgear..
Go to the DHCP setup page and simply change the first pair of digits from 10.0 to 192.168 and see how it works.
I will get pictures for you from v6 utility.. shortly.
But it is important to check first what the WAN ip is.
The main Internet tab will show the WAN IP
In my case it is a private IP because I have the TC in bridge..

TM does not work like that.
If you want files to use later.. do not use TM.
Or do not use TM to the same location. Plug a USB drive into the computer and use that as the target for the permanent backup.

  • Today Apple retail unit sold me Airport Time Capsule. Now trying to install on my Mac which runs OSX10.6.8. Seems I should have newer OSX and Airport Utility version. What can I do please?

Today Apple retail unit/shop in sold me Airport Time Capsule. Now trying to install on my 21 inch iMac which runs OSX10.6.8. Seems I should have newer OSX and also newer Airport Utility version (mine is 5.6.1). What can I do, please? So much looking forward to using Time Capsule. It is not at all readable on box. Now with a magnified glass I can just about make out the installation requirements printed in tiny print at the bottom/base of the box! I have tried software update etc etc and to download Airport Utility update from Apple website. This was unsuccessful because of OSX, I gathered. Appreciate any similar experience and how it was resolved. Thank you. Tr

You need OS X 10.7.5 or later. Most likely you can upgrade OS X on your iMac. You already have 10.6.8 and access to the App Store. If your computer qualifies to run Mavericks, then that is what you would upgrade to, otherwise, you would upgrade to Lion.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

  • Airport (TIme Capsule) not connecting to iMAC running windows XP

I have an iMAC that runs both OS X and Windows. My router is an airport (Time Capsule)
I can wirelessly access the router when running OS X, but when I run Windows XP I can not. If I plug the cable from the cable modem directly into the iMAC when running XP, it works fine.
The airport (Time Capsule) shows up in the wireless setting with a strong signal, but when I try to connect to it; I get "Wireless router is out of range". The airport sits next to the computer.

  • My airport time capsule is a 3tb paperweight. HELP

What do people do when their MacBook is at capacity but want to keep taking photos of their trips and family and continue buying songs and tv she's on itunes?
Apple told me to buy airport time capsule. I did. Now when I call AppleCare and tell the what I am trying to do, they suggest otherwise. I don't need 3tb for time machine, because my house has only one CPU. I just want to free most or all of the 250gb HD MacBook, back that up (maybe to an external HD), and then use time machine with the airport to backup. I am happy to manually start time machine every time I want it to run if I have to.  And I want to keep taking 100 photos and videos a day and upload them to iPhoto.
    I have the following:
    1. MacBook Pro
    2. Airport time capsule 3tb, and,
    3. A seagate4tb external HD (billed as not a portable HD, if that maters).
Please help me figure out 1 or more solutions. I am quite desperate.

It must be plugged directly into the Mac.
And the connection should be fastest I have, bit that is just about speed, it does not affect anything else, right?
    Logistically, how do I setup?
Yes, in order to get decent performance you want the fastest possible link.
Thunderbolt is the best by many many times.. although most mechanical drives will not be able to make better use of it than USB3. It is also still very expensive.
The old FW800 was much better than USB2.. but many of the FW800 drives were cheap and used poor FW800 converters and so achieved no better speeds than USB2.. take a bow now WD.
So if the best you have is FW800 look at good versions of it.. OWC sells lots of FW800 drives still, although the standard is finished with USB3 now cheaper and more readily available.. which is fine if you have it.
I am not sure what you mean by how to setup .. you should be able to copy the library to the external drive.. and simply point the iphoto to the location of the library. iTunes is the same.
Then setup TM to backup the external drive.. by default it is off.. simply remove it from the list of excluded devices.

  • How to add Airport Time Capsule to an existing AT&T U-Verse Network?

Hello, and please bear with me as I am not very tech savvy I just purchased a 2TB Airport Time Capsule (5th Gen) because I'd like to backup my Macbook Pro wirelessly. I've tried customer service with my ISP without luck, AT&T U-Verse. I currently connect through a 3801HGV 2wire dsl modem/router and think I'm stuck using it since numerous other devices are hooked up through it and I'd rather not re-setup them up.
I'm having issues connecting the TC to my existing network. When I use the Airport Utility (tried both while TC is hardwired to my computer, and to the router/modem) it doesn't detect my 2wire network, another network I assume is my neighbor's.
From reading through other posts with similar issues it sounds like I can't use the Airport TC to extend my existing network, say if the U-Verse router was upstairs, Airport TC was downstairs is that correct? Do I have to hardwire the TC to the router/modem?  I've found some screen captures of the Airport Utility but I cannot find them. I noticed that they were pre-Maverick screenshots so perhaps the menus have changed?

Do I have to hardwire the TC to the router/modem?
    Yes.
Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN <-> port on the Uverse gateway to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Power up the TIme Capsule (TC) and let it run few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the back of the device for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the TC to restart, at which time it will be slowly blinking amber.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Other Wi-Fi Devices tab at the upper left corner of the screen
Click on the Time Capsule now and AirPort Setup will open up automatically and take a minute to analze the network.
Click on Other Options at the lower left of the window
Click the button next to Create a new network
Enter a name for the network and a name for the TC and a password and click Next
Skip the step about cycling power on the modem
Wait while AirPort Setup sets up the TC, then click Done
Now click on the TC icon in AirPort Utility
Click Edit in the small window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Change the setting for Router Mode to Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right of the screen, then click Continue and wait for the TC to restart again
You should now have a green light on the TC
You can use either the Uverse wireless network or the TC wireless.  If you want the best wireless performance, use the TC network.

  • Using Airport Time Capsule with an external usb hard drive - how to connect

I have 2TB Airport Time capsule which is connected to my iMac by an ethernet cable and which I use for T.Machine backups - No problems here.
I have an old MacBook Pro running 10.6.8  and which is also connected to my T/C via wi-fi - again no problems.
But I understand I can use an external hard drive via usb cable connected via a powered hub, to the T/Capsule and which I wish to do certain backups from my MBP (I have no wish to update the MBP as it runs certain apps no longer available on the iMac (10.9.2)
Now the problem I have is trying to set it up,  the MBP has Airport Utility 5.6.1 and I can’t continue as it says I need a newer version. As I see it,  the newer version doesn’t work on the MBP only  the iMac.
A catch 22 situation. If I continue and and go to “manual setup” then try  update, all I get is “correct the problem before updating”  (Allow setup over the internet using Bonjour).
Anyone have any ideas or images that I can view to try and get things going?
I should add that I wish to use my external hard drive not as a time machine backup but only for certain items using say, Super Duper, but am unable to get the disk to mount on the MBP
    Alan

I still can't use it the way I was hoping because it then becomes a T/M back-up disk and not a normal usb/firewire disc.
You are first mounting the drive on the desktop, correct?
Not sure what you mean here.
You can drag/drop files normally or copy/paste files to the drive icon on the desktop, just as you would a normal drive that is displayed on the desktop.
Or, double click the drive icon on the desktop and drag/drop files into the open window there.
Tell us the steps that you are using to mount the drive on the desktop. What happens after each step?

Following directions, when open the Airport Utility, there is no continue button to proceed...
Where is the continue button to move on to create a new wireless network?

    Sometimes the utility has issues..
It is easier IMHO to do it manually.
See here for manual setup of the TC.
Airport Utility shows "unexpected error - please try again" when connecting to Time Capsule
    Repeated pretty much here.
Airtport Utility can't find Airport Time Capsule on either of my 2009 Macs

  • Can not connect to airport time capsule

Here is what the current situation is:
I can setup the Airport Time Capsule (3GB) form my Mavericks 10.9.4 MacBookAir 2013 using AirPort Utility. However, after setup, I cannot connect to the time capsule using many of the standard ways. Trying both connections of wired and wireless. I have tried:
    1. Connecting to the Time Capsule using Time Machine (which I can see the Time Capsule Drive as a selection), and I always get the error "There was a problem connecting to the server “XXXXXX”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator."
    2. Using Finder side bar under Shared (which I can see the Time Capsule Drive as a selection), clicking on it, always says Connection Failed at the top of the window. Clicking the Connect As... button results in the same error message as #1.
    3. Using Finder, connect to server option, entering the name of the time capsule with .local at the end, and using the ip address and it always returns the same error as #1.
Trying option #3 and looking at the Console for error messages always produces these two messages:
    Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1093]: ERROR: AFP_CreateSessionRef - AFPLoadModules failed 22
Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1154]: NewAFPLoadModules: bootstrap_look_up failed Unknown service name
Any help would be much appreciated. My computer has security scripts run on it that my company wrote inhouse and not sure exactly what is locked down and not locked down. Thank you.

    Using method 3.. try
SMB://TCname.local or SMB://TCIPaddress (I hope obvious you replace with actual name or actual IP).. Please use names that are SMB compatible.. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    No luck try CIFS:// etc.
    This forces it to SMB1.
No luck ping the TC in terminal.. does it respond??
Do you have ipv6 set ot link-local only in the computer??
Your company may have locked you out.. I would not be surprised. Are you running a vpn on the computer whilst trying to connect to the local network. That will fail and the ping test will show you why.
    Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1093]: ERROR: AFP_CreateSessionRef - AFPLoadModules failed 22
Date Time NetAuthSysAgent[1154]: NewAFPLoadModules: bootstrap_look_up failed Unknown service name
Interesting.. it is blocking AFP perhaps. AFP modules refused.. I do not know the errors well enough but if AFP fails there is a good chance TM won't work. So even if you can mount and access the disk I am not sure you can do TM backups.

  • AirPort Time Capsule Model A1470 Shuts Down

    Hello!
I purchased an AirPort Time Capsule last week for more than $300 to replace Model A1409, which suddenly shut down and never came on again.
The new AirPort Time Capsule (Model A1470) shuts down at least 4 times a day every day.  I unplug it and plug it back in and it reconnects.  This happens at random times when I'm using the computer and when I'm not.  Sometimes it happens when we're watching a movie on the TV and after I get it up and running again I need to enter all of the password infromation on the television again.
    This is a 2TB Model A1470.
Having reliable wifi is a must because I am a work-at-home online educator and have 40-hours per week of office hours with continuous IM access to my students.
Should I return it or is there something I missed?

When you say shuts down.. what does that actually mean??
The new AirPort Time Capsule (Model A1470) shuts down at least 4 times a day every day.
Does the LED in the TC turn off??
    Does it blink amber??
Can you connect a computer to it by ethernet and still get internet??
The requirement to re-enter info like password on the TV seems rather strange.
If the TC just stays Green and the effects are in the network and not apparently on the TC itself.. please try a full factory reset of the TC.
Please rename it.. Call the base station TCgen5.
Please set a different wireless name to both bands.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
Even set fixed channel for 2.4ghz and you can also try 5ghz although I doubt it will accept the value.
Make sure you use WPA2 Personal security with a suitable password, 8-20 characters pure alphanumeric.
If you get no improvement then yes you should return it as it seems to be faulty.

  • Airport Time Capsule Shutdown problem

My 3TB 2014 Airport Time Capsule shuts down by itself approx once a week :Green light out with no wi-fi signal.  Need to unplug and reconnect power to restart system.  System has plenty of air flow, fan works and capsule body is cool.
Want to find out what is the cause and solution to prevent this repetitive shutdown problem.
    Thanks
    Dunkin888

This shutdown problem does not seem to apply to the Airport Extreme which does not have the Harddrive,
    Yes, it does.
Re: My Airport Extreme intermittently shuts down completely.
Search here is now a hopeless failure but we do see the complaint fairly often.
And the same thing happens.. people return them and come back with the same problem.
There was some discussion as to the Airports being ultra sensitive to spikes.. or power dips.. so using it on a UPS was one recommendation..
I have found btw that the power supply design for universal, often works better in our part of the world on 240v than on 110v. If you happen to have an 110v to 240v transformer handy or cheaply available have a go running it on 240v. There are various methods used to handle 110v but voltage doubler on the primary circuit is one of the main ways it is done. That is a lot more susceptible to power spikes and dips than standard full wave rectifier.
In the end though.. power supply really should not shutdown.. AFAIK there is no soft off on them .. so for the power supply to shut down completely means it is in protection mode..
If you wanted to open and replace the supply with external 12v supply you probably can.. but so far nobody has trusted me with one.. and I think they are too issue prone to go buy one for myself to do experiments... although I am always keeping my eyes open for the dead ones.
    See the teardown in
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/AirPort+Time+Capsule+A1470+%28Mini%21%29+Teardow n/15067
Then look at the link to the airport extreme.. they are identical except for the drive.. ie Apple has same power supply in both.. since it is under so much less load in the airport extreme yet they still have the problem I suspect it is fundamental design flaw in the supply.

  • How to set up AirPort + Time Capsule On the Same Network but make it so only i use it?

Ok so i am planning on getting the AirPort + Time Capsule in a few weeks, and i have seen many peole talk about how there is a right way and wrong way to set it up because apperently the bad way makes it run slow? Well i have two questions, one is how do i set it up the right way to use it to the full potential to use the new beamforming feature? And my second question which is kind of a problem is that I have internet already but my other brothers use it and i told them about pitching in buy it and they dont want to because they think its pointlesss, so what i want to know is if I can connect it to my existing wi-fi but at the same time like create a diffrent network so that only i can use it? (ex. have my wifi, 2WIRE123 for example, and then some how connect the ethernet cable to the airport + time caplsule and create a new network like 2WIRE124 so they would both basiaclly be using the same internet connection but separated to 2 diffrent networks?) Thank You.

so what i want to know is if I can connect it to my existing wi-fi but at the same time like create a diffrent network so that only i can use it?
    Sorry, but no.
If you can connect the AirPort to the 2Wire router using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, then you can configure the AirPort to create a new wireless network with its own wireless network name and password.
