AirPort Time Capsule Firmware Update

I did the AirPort Time Capsule latest Firmware Update. Now it does not work, no Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection is recognized. It has a steady Amber light. I have tryed reseting it. How can I restore it?

Power off the Time Capsule for 30 minutes or so, and try to start it up again.
A solid amber light is usually an indication that the hard drive has failed, but it could also indicate a power supply issue on the Time Capsule. Unfortunately, either issue is a show stopper.
If the Time Capsule is still in warranty. or covered by AppleCare (up to 3 years), then Apple will replace the device for you.
Otherwise, repairs might be possible. See the link below for suggestions. But, if the Time Capsule is much past 3 years old, repairs may exceed the cost of a new Time Capsule with more storage capacity.

  • AirPort Time Capsule (firmware v7.7.3) has slow wifi connection to new Surface Pro 3

I got a new Surface Pro 3 i7. I have all the updates for it. I ran into a problem that many others also ran into which was very slow WiFi performance. I utilized many troubleshooting methods and sources and I am currently inclined to believe this... the new Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC Network Controller drivers are not compatible with my Airport Time Capsule firmware version 7.7.3.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there another firmware version that works (older or newer)?
    Details:
I tried all kinds of things, like changing the network drivers on the SP3 to many different versions. Many of the help forums recommended using the drivers dated 4/24/2014. This did seem to help, but not reliably. What I discovered is... if I connect using the SP3 WiFi to my network extension Airport Express on version 7.6.4, I reliably get 20-22 mbps (which is the best I can expect from my network and works great for my needs). But, when I connect to my primary network Airport Time Capsule, the best I can get is 1.5 mbps, but usually between .15 and .9 mbps. It's completely unusable in today's internet environment. At the same time, I used my iPhone and the Airport Utility to verify the connections.  I used SpeedTest.net on my MacBook, iPad, iPhone and Win8.1 HP laptop to verify that every other device was getting the 20+mbps. And they did.  Only the Surface Pro 3 couldn't perform when using WiFi through the Airport Time Capsule. The SP3 does achieve 20+ mbps like all my other devices, but only when connected to the Airport Express.
The articles I read said that the network drivers on the SP3 seem to require the routers to be updated to the latest versions. Both the Airport Time Capsule and the Airport Express seem to be updated. When I go into their settings using the Airport Utility, there are no updates available.
Of course this problem isn't replicated at the Microsoft store since they don't have apple routers.  So, their response is to upgrade the routers.  Extremely unhelpful when the Apple software is saying it is upgraded already. I can't believe this new Airport Time Capsule has to be retired because it isn't playing well with others, and I love the automatic backup it is providing for my MacBook. So, somehow, I need the Airport Time Capsule to work with the new WiFi card & drivers on my SP3, just like the SP3 is working properly with the Airport Express.

    Thanks for your input!
    1. No downgrade. Bummer, but understandable.
    2. Completely agree!!! I did too and then I had to redo it because I couldn't install a driver. I had to start all over and reinstall Win 8 then Win 8.1 over it. It was a colossal waste of time and endless frustration. If I can just get it modestly working, I'll take it. It doesn't have to be perfect right now.
    3.  Great suggestion! And the Microsoft forums are also a buzz. One suggestion I tried (and it seems to be working) is to set a separate wireless network name for the 5ghz band. I haven't thoroughly tested it yet, but I'm hopeful.  I t seems to have worked for some, but not others. The next thing I'll try is fixing the channel, but strangely, I didn't see that option in the AirPort Utility app on my iPhone. Is it only available through Mac/PC laptop/desktop software?
    4. Yup. Sigh. I actually have an old linksys. I retired it when I went 100% apple. I was hoping that things would work smoother. And they did! Until this SP3 came into my life. Arg.
And and a few more details...
the AirPort Time Capsule is 802.11ac
the AirPort Express is 802.11n (2nd gen)
I'm wondering if it is the AC connection that is the issue. Maybe since the Express always connects with n, it is OK....
Nope. Just tested the SP3 again and it is maintaining it's connection to the AirPort Time Capsule utiling the 802.11a/n/ac mode and connecting to the 5Ghz special network name. So far so good... Fingers crossed...

  • Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.5.1 - Where's "download" on support page?

    Hey there -
There is no "download" button available on the apple.com/support page for the latest Firmware Update (7.5.1) for the Time Capsule.
Wouldn't care if my device would automatically bring in the update. But, it won't. It's still sitting with the 7.4.2 firmware version.
Any ideas how to get the Time Capsule Firmware Update 7.5.1 to download?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
According to this Apple Web page
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL965
that update is "for the latest Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme Base Station (Late 2009)". If in AirPort Utility the menu item AirPort Utility -> Check for Updates results in the message "No updates to AirPort Utility or any of your AirPort wireless devices are available at this time" (which is the case for the Time Capsule I bought in August of last year), then it would seen that update doesn't apply to your Time Capsule.

That is very bad.. how old is it??
The Gen4 TC can die this way.. it is not usual but it happens.
Leave it for several hours to cool off. Do a factory reset immediately when you try to restart it.
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
Tell me exactly what the LEDs do throughout this process.
Both the main one at the front and the LED on the ethernet ports which should all flash during bootup.
If it is less than a year.. of course Apple will replace under warranty.. 2 years in some places.. Europe .. places with stronger consumer laws. If you have applecare on a computer it should still cover the TC.
I kind of doubt you are going to get this going again... but we can try.

  • After 7.5.1 Time Capsule firmware update -- bad news

Has anyone else had a new 2TB 5GHz Time Capsule, with factory firmware 7.5 with a fan that always runs AND after updating to the recent 7.5.1 update, the fan stops running -- but then AirPort Admin reports it is overheating?
AppleCare seems to have never heard about this issue...

So here's the good news and the not-so-good news...
The good news is that the genius was able to reproduce my issue and replaced the unit.
The not-so-good news is that the new unit's fan -- so far -- has never turned on. It gets warm to the touch in normal operation. So far, no overheat alerts. Will see how long it lasts...
Net-net: if your fan doesn't turn off, and the firmware update doesn't agree with it, your local Apple Store or the Apple Experts by phone are your best avenue to resolution.

  • Before Time Capsule Firmware Update Query

I have just purchased Time Capsule and after a few glitches have set it up to work with my ISP.
I noted there was a firmware update shown to me when trying to configure although I haven't tried it yet as setting up took me longer than I thought. It's working but I came to the forum to read about the firmware update procedure (think I will wait until I am more confident with the product)
I would appreciate advice after reading Apple's document on a firmware update "If you are updating a Time Capsule, disconnect any clients that may be using the Time Capsule's disk before installing the firmware."
I only have my ADSL router modem cable connected to the WAN port (presume clients would mean printers or USB hard drive) or do I disconnect the modem cable after downloading the update before install?
I would prefer to ask before I try anything as I don't want to loose my connection completely.
Thanks if anyone can advise on the correct way to do the update although I know some have downgraded again which is why I am very unsure.

    Hi,
Just leave the WAN port connected. The advice to disconnect any clients is just for the case they are using the TC's harddisk (for saving a document of making a backup to it) because their connection will fail when the TC reboots after you have applied the update. If your're the only one around just proceed.

  • Using Airport Extreme with a Airport Time Capsule to update Blu-Ray player

I was wondering if it were possible to hook up a blu-ray player to a second Airport Extreme to update the player? I have a Time Capsule in my home office and a blu-ray on the other end of the house. The blu-ray needs updates. I am wondering if I can use an Airport Extreme as an "extension" wireless unit hooked up to my blu-ray player to have it connected to the net?
    Thank you!
    John

    Welcome to the discussions, John!
You have a few options to do what you want.
Perhaps you were thinking of the AirPort Express when you mentioned AirPort Extreme. The AirPort Express can be configured to "extend" the main wireless network created by the Time Capsule and the ethernet port will be "live" so that you could connect to your BluRay player via ethernet.
An AirPort Extreme would work as well, but you may not need the other extra ethernet ports on the Extreme and extra expense for features that you may not use.
I take it that running an ethernet cable to the BluRay player is not feasible in your current situation.
You may not have thought about the next option, which would make use of a pair ethernet powerline adapters. One device plugs into an AC socket at the head end and another plugs into AC at the BluRay end. The adapters use the wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal. You would run a short ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports on your AirPort Extreme to the adapter and do the same at the BluRay end.
This type of connection will almost always provide a faster signal than wireless, so you may want to check these out as an option. Best Buy will have several to choose from.

  • Can you force a time capsule firmware update via usb?

I have an Apple Time capsule that appears to have corrupted firmware. The capsule never gets through startup (status light is permanently solid amber), it doesn't respond to a hard reset, and isn't visible via LAN from my computer. My best guess a solution was to somehow force a firmware install to the device using the USB port. Does anyone know if this is possible? Or have another idea for how I can solve this problem?
    Thanks

Answered in your other thread. It is not firmware corruption.

  • Time Capsule Firmware update 7.4.2 not connecting to Dell 1370

Having installed the firmware update I now find that one of the PCs on the network, a Dell Inspiron 1300, can no longer connect to the network.
Any suggestions or do I have to go back to 7.4.1

i recommend an update to 7.4.2 as it fixed a lot of bugs! if i were you, i'll save the base config of my current settings since im happy with it. Proceed with the firmware update. If its good stick with it. If its problematic, downgrade the firmware then import your baseconfig.

Connect by ethernet.. press reset and try again.

  • Data folder can not be opened in finding " AirPort Time Capsule " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist .

    Hi
I have a " AirPort Time Capsule " (firmware 7.7.3) When I try to open the data folder in "finder". Then I got the message  " The operation can not be completed because the original item for " data" does not exist". I have a lot of data and I can understand why I get this message?
    Anyone who can help? Thanks..
    Br. Bo

Get a USB drive of 2TB or more.. assuming your TC is 2TB. Either preformatted Mac or plug into your Mac and format it standard Mac OS Extended Journaled in disk utility.
Do a full archive of the TC. You do this using airport utility. Do not click the erase disk.. I marked in green.. just the archive.. that is to backup the internal disk to the USB disk. It is not fast.. take it that the process will go at around 40-50GB/hr.
Once you complete the archive .. it is a direct image of the data on your TC.. you can then plug it into your computer directly.. and then try and open the files you lost.. if you cannot open them.. open disk utility and fix the permissions.
    http://osxdaily.com/2015/01/13/repair-disk-permissions-mac-os-x/
Or try the methods apple recommends..
OS X Yosemite: Set permissions for items on your Mac
It is possible to fix things on the USB drive because it is locally mounted.. but you cannot fix it on TC which is network drive.

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

  • My airport time capsule will no longer allow our iPhones or vizio smart tvs to connect to it, though my iPad air mac mini and mac air connect fine. Why is this? does a recent software update have anything to do with it?

my airport time capsule will no longer allow our iPhones or vizio smart tvs to connect to it, though my iPad air mac mini and mac air connect fine. Why is this? does a recent software update have anything to do with it?

What model is your TC? What is the firmware?
I recommend you do a factory reset and use short names.. not apple recommended names.
Short.. 2-20 characters .. less than 10 even better.
    No spaces.
    Pure alphanumeric.
Set fixed channels for 2.4ghz wireless.. test with 11, 6, 1 at least.
That often helps.. if not and is old, ie Gen1-4 go back to 7.6.1 firmware which is far more solid.

  • I've updated Time Capsule firmware and now can't print wirelessly

I have recently updated my Time Capsule to Firmware 7.6.2 and now my computer no longer sees my Brother MFC9320-CW either wirelessly or via ethernet.  I am able to hook the printer up to the Time Capsule's USB port and print in that way.
The printer does not retrive a DHCP address either wired or wirelessly, and when I set it staticly, it still does not respond to a ping.  I hope I'm barking up the right tree here, as the firmware update on the time capsule is the only thing I can think of (aside from a network card failure on the printer, which its diagnostics insist is not the case) that is causing this.
My next step will be to set up a test WiFi network with a third-party router to remove the printer (network card failure option) from the equation.

To Downgrade Your Time Capsule Firmware:
Open Airport Utility: Applications → Utilities → Airport Utility
Find your device in the left-hand column and select the “Manual Setup” button
In the “Summary” window that pops up click on the word “Version”
In the pop up box that comes up next to the “Upload Version” select the previous version
    Click “OK”
Your Time Capsule will restart and be as good as new!
