Airport time capsule wi-fi speed

I have an Airport Time Capsule and my internet service is 100Mbps. Hard wired to the Time Capsule I get close to 100Mbps that but when using wi-fi the max speed is around 40Mbps. Is this a function of the unit or is there a setting that I need to change?

So to get a good signal to my Smart TV which is in the next room I guess I should hard wire it also.
Hard wired connections are always the better performance and reliability choice, if possible.
As far as a good location for the Time Capsule for wireless, think of it as if it were a water sprinkler and you want to get as much of the room as "wet" as possible.
There might be a worse spot to locate a Time Capsule than under a desk, but off hand, I can't think of one unless it is inside a cabinet.
The A1355 version is known as a 3rd Generation Time Capsule. Depending on when you purchased the product, it is 4-5 years old at this point. Five years, on average, is about all that you can really expect from a router designed for home use, so you might want to start thinking about a replacement at some point. The top rated speed on the 3rd Generation is 540 Mbps, far greater than your ISP can hope to deliver.
Here is a comparison of the Time Capsule models:

  • Airport Time capsule behind cisco router download speed

My airport time capsule  is connected to the internet in bridge mode via a cisco router.
The cisco router provides a 99Mbps download speed. However, when I " bridge"  my time capsule in between (wired) the speed slows down to 9 Mbps.
I have already tried to assign a static DHCP IP to my time capsules MAC address and disabled DMZ for that specific IP address, but am failing to get the speed up to par.
    Any suggestions?

I have used Time capsule 1.5 year behind a copperjet  modem on ADSL, no problems.
Changed provider and am connected by cable with new cisco modem including router.
So the set up looks like:
    internet>cisco modem/router>airport time capsule>macbook pro
The cisco modem without airport time capsule is working ok: when logged in speed is 99 Mbps as it should be (wired and wireless)
Connecting cisco router with UTP cable to time capsule and time capsule with UTP to macbook slows down speed to 9 Mbps
    (time capsule in bridgemode)

  • Airport Time Capsule slows down internet speed while uploading app

    Hi All,
Internet speed is going down drastically when I am submitting any iOS app to iTunes Connect.
Previously it was not like this.
I have updated my Macbook Pro to Mavericks and using Airport Time Capsule for wi-fi connection.
Is anyone facing this problem? Any help on this will be very much helpful.

I have almost the exact setup as you, and airtunes never slows down my internet connection.
Has it just happened recently? Have you done a reset on the TC? Make sure you are using the g network, and not in the b only mode.
You can also make sure everything on the network are getting good signal. You can check the signal strength from Airport Utility (in the logs and Stats pane).

  • Airport time capsule inconsistent speeds?

I installed airport time capsule last week and it was great, but suddenly my speeds are very inconsistent. is there something i can do to fix that? my tests at speedtest.net were getting 55 download and 10 upload regularly, but now they're anywhere from 5 download and 1 upload to 35 down and 8 up. I'm very puzzled. all via wifi. Apple doesn't say i need any firmware updates so I think i'm good there?

Please plug in by ethernet and try it. You need to determine if the issue is wireless, or your modem or your ISP. If the same effect on ethernet (with wireless turned off on the computer) the issue is more likely ISP.. plug directly into the modem bypassing the TC and see what gives.. You normally need to power cycle the modem for this to work.
If the ISP and modem are fine..
TC wireless only fails.. redo the setup of the wireless.. test with fixed channels.. test each in turn.
Use a wireless analysis type product to see if the problem is interference. eg istumbler..
Do you have other devices to check with, to see if it is that computer and not the TC.
If the wireless and ethernet both suffer the slow down.. but modem direct is fine.. then reset the TC and redo the setup from scratch. See if it fixes it.. if not your TC has a fault and should be returned for testing to Apple.

  • Have the following iMac at home and am contemplating adding a MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule for backup/storage and increased WiFi speeds.  My question is this (1) a compatible setup, and (2) will my older iMac slow down the WiFi speeds?   Man

Have an older iMac and am contemplating adding a new MacBook Air and a 2TB Airport Time Capsule to increase WiFi speeds. My question is (a) is this a compatable setup and (b) will the older iMac slow the WiFi speeds?
    Thanks

Be careful about mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's disk.  That will cause conflicts, sooner or later.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for an explanation and some possible workarounds.

  • My airport time capsule is a 3tb paperweight. HELP

What do people do when their MacBook is at capacity but want to keep taking photos of their trips and family and continue buying songs and tv she's on itunes?
Apple told me to buy airport time capsule. I did. Now when I call AppleCare and tell the what I am trying to do, they suggest otherwise. I don't need 3tb for time machine, because my house has only one CPU. I just want to free most or all of the 250gb HD MacBook, back that up (maybe to an external HD), and then use time machine with the airport to backup. I am happy to manually start time machine every time I want it to run if I have to.  And I want to keep taking 100 photos and videos a day and upload them to iPhoto.
    I have the following:
    1. MacBook Pro
    2. Airport time capsule 3tb, and,
    3. A seagate4tb external HD (billed as not a portable HD, if that maters).
Please help me figure out 1 or more solutions. I am quite desperate.

It must be plugged directly into the Mac.
And the connection should be fastest I have, bit that is just about speed, it does not affect anything else, right?
    Logistically, how do I setup?
Yes, in order to get decent performance you want the fastest possible link.
Thunderbolt is the best by many many times.. although most mechanical drives will not be able to make better use of it than USB3. It is also still very expensive.
The old FW800 was much better than USB2.. but many of the FW800 drives were cheap and used poor FW800 converters and so achieved no better speeds than USB2.. take a bow now WD.
So if the best you have is FW800 look at good versions of it.. OWC sells lots of FW800 drives still, although the standard is finished with USB3 now cheaper and more readily available.. which is fine if you have it.
I am not sure what you mean by how to setup .. you should be able to copy the library to the external drive.. and simply point the iphoto to the location of the library. iTunes is the same.
Then setup TM to backup the external drive.. by default it is off.. simply remove it from the list of excluded devices.

  • Airport Time Capsule Can't Connect to BrightHouse Internet

I have BrightHouse Internet service set up as follows:
    1.  Coax in
    2.  Splitter
    3.  Coax out to ARRIS modem/telephony combo (BrightHouse box) and Motorola Surfboard (BrightHouse box, for high speed access)
    4.  Cat 5 from Surfboard to Netgear WNR2000 router.
Note:  The modem setup and splitter were installed by BrightHouse.
I want to replace my Netgear router with the AirPort Time Capsule (which to this point I have been using only as a backup drive for Time Machine).
Currently, when the AirPort is connected to a LAN port on the Netgear, I get internet to the AirPort (AirPort Utility says so).  With this configuration I have the following settings on the AirPort:
    1.  Network - Off (Bridge Mode)
    2.  Wireless network - Off (the broadcast conflicted with the wireless signal from my nearby Netgear WiFi)
    3.  Internet connect using DHCP
    4.  IPv6 configure automatically
I have tried various settings to get the AirPort connected, but never works.  The Airport Congifurations seem OK (green light in AirPort utility), but the Internet connectivity when plugged into the port on the back of either modem is absent (yellow light in AirPort Utility).
I've done all of the obvious stuff (made sure the ethernet cables are plugged into the proper ports, hard reset the Airport Time Capsule, reset both modems (even in very specific order).  No luck.
Does anyone know if there is an issue with BrightHouse and AirPorts?

Did you power down the modem and leave it off for at least 20min.. plus or minus.. say try 5min or try overnight.. but all cable services require the modem powered off so you can swap the router. That is because the first device to connect captures the public IP and is registered by MAC address to the ISP system. To get rid of that you need the modem off long enough for dhcp lease to reset..
You also should factory reset the TC to do this. It is really hard to change roles on the TC by simple manual changes. Start afresh. None of your backups will be altered.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
After a reset the TC will go back to router default mode.
Everything else on the network will also need rebooting. This is important to change over to the new router.
    Tell us how you go.
If you still have issues what model TC running what firmware??

  • How to setup airport time capsule to get better performance?

I need to set up my wireless system with my new Airport time capsule 3T as primary base station to get better performance, and  If I have a cable modem  as primary device to get the signal (5MB) from the ISP then my network has one, Macbook pro, Macbook air, mac mini, 2 ipad's, 2 iphones, but neither of them is connected all time.
What is the best way to do that?
What wifi channel need choose to?

What is the best way to do that?
Use ethernet.. performance of wireless is never as good as ethernet.
What wifi channel need choose to?
There is no such thing as the best channel..
Leave everything auto.. and see if it gives you full download speed.
Use 5ghz.. and keep everything up close to the TC for the best wireless speed.
If you are far away it will drop back to 2.4ghz which is slower.
Once you reach the internet speed nothing is going to help it go faster so you are worrying about nothing.

  • Does Airport Time capsule needs to be always connected by WAN to wifi router to use as external hard drive?

    Hi,
    I'm getting puzzled.
    I have:
    New Airport Time Capsule
    MBP 15 Retina
    MBP 15 2008y
    ATV3
    Broadband with wifi SkyHub router
    iPhone 5s
To use the Capsule as wireless external Hard drive does it needs to be always WAN cabled to SkyHub wifi broadband router? Awkward if does.
If I plug it out I can't see the capsule in the Finder?
    How to set it up?
    How to move files?
I wish to have on the capsule iTunes & iPhoto libraries, other documents and have acces to them from both MBPs and phones. Not as back up machine but for everyday use.
    Thanks
    Marcin

I wish to have on the capsule iTunes & iPhoto libraries, other documents and have acces to them from both MBPs and phones.
That is possible for your MBPs but not for your iPhones. In addition, you are likely to find its performance with iTunes and iPhoto to be unacceptably slow, to the point of uselessness.
If you really want to, it is possible to configure the Time Capsule join your existing router as a wireless client. In that configuration it will be available to your wireless network as a storage and backup device. It does not strictly need a wired connection to your router. To configure it that way it is best to start with a "hard reset".
It's not worth the effort though, due to the unacceptably slow transfer speed you are likely to achieve.

  • MacBook Pro loses connection to Internet after sleep using Airport Time Capsule

I recently upgraded to Mavricks and then added a new Airport Time Capsule, and now I my MBP will not connect to the wireless LAN after waking up from sleep mode.  My MBP worked great for over a year with an non-Apple router, so I am thinking that there is a new Apple computer-to-Apple Router issue going on. Any thoughts, suggestions?
I read all the threads and have followed all the simple advice, such as making sure the Airport is at the top of the network priority list, etc, to no avail.  I end up having to reboot my MBP to get reconnected, which is super frustrating.

  • HT201510 Airport Time Capsule

I need help to set up the Airport time capsule?

The Modem is from Nordnet which is connected to a satellite dish receiver it's a Newtec NTC/2252.AA modem.... that probably doesn't mean too much.
I want the time capsule to provide a wireless network, which should replace my existing wireless network.
So I have removed the existing wireless router  from Nordnet and connected the Time capsule directly to the Nordnet Modem via an ethernet cable.
I did have  connectivity at the first attempt first with a steady green connection led. but after trying to connect to the time capsule with my iMac wirelessly I could not and now I do not have a steady green light anymore but an amber flashing. I could never connect to the internet via the capsule but I had the Time Machine connected with the Capsule and it was functioning ok as my back up.
So I reconnected back up my previous wireless router etc and disconnected the time capsule and all functions of the router functioned ok as it did  previously.
so now im trying again  to use the airport capsule to run both the wireless internet and do my back ups and i just cannot get past GO.
When I open the airport utility, I only see the internet connection  ( the globe) and its connected to the internet via the modem. I see also on the left drop down window which identifies the Airport capsule but when I try to connect to it, it fails giving an error message "Unexpected Error" and i can go no further.
I have done a hard reset on the capsule and tried again but cannot see the time capsule anymore.
I have run the System Information on the Network and copy pasted this information as below as you may see what the problem is.

  • Does Airport time capsule work well as a storage for large files, such as RAW Photos and HD Video?

If Airport time capsule can work as a storage device, how reliable is it?  Are downloads into Airport dependent on internet speed, or on the time capsule wifi?

If Airport time capsule can work as a storage device, how reliable is it?
The Time Capsule was designed to be used for Time Machine backups, but can equally be used for storage. Like any network storage device it is relatively reliable. However, you should always have a good backup strategy for important files.
Are downloads into Airport dependent on internet speed, or on the time capsule wifi?
Data transfer rates "into" the Time Capsule are dependent on a number of factors. Which factors depend on the original source of the files. Regardless, the common factors will be the TC's internal hard drive interface and data write speeds of the drive itself.

  • Why is my wifi so slow on my Airport Time Capsule

I just got am Airport Time Capsule 2TB for my 2100sq ft house. The Time Capsule sits in the middle of the house, and my iPhone, iPad and MacBook all have "Excellent" Connection according to my AirPort Utility. However, my AppleTV is only getting "Good" connection, and operating at a Data Rate of 13Mb/s and -76 dBm.
For the 6 things I have connected to the Time Capsule, it's usually fine. But when I'm trying to watch a movie I rent on iTunes or NetFlix, I notce that everthing is etiher grainey half the time, or the AppleTV freezes and pauses while it uploads more content.
I upgraded to the Time Capsule for the backup storage, and becuase it soudned like it was a stronger wifi router for my AppleTV and Samsung Smart TV. My AirPort Express used to be a little slower and would leave my movies a little grainey, but it seems much worse with the Time Capsule.
Are there settings I should set to boost the connection and speed? Or, is this just actually how the Time Capsule is?

If you take the ipad and place it right next to the ATV does the signal drop to the same level as the ATV?
If the ATV is in a poor spot in the house it could be affected by even tiny placement differences.
Some people do find the new TC worse..
Can you try using the express as a wireless extender particularly for the ATV and Smart TV. Place the express in a spot where it gets excellent signal from both the TC and is able to repeat with excellent signal to the TVs.
There are no settings to boost speed. Actually the apple routers are pretty well devoid of settings of any kind.
But I would do the following.
Reset to factory.. use all short names with no spaces and pure alphanumeric for everything.. TC name, wireless names and ensure disk share name is data.
Set the name of 2.4ghz to say TC24ghz and 5ghz to say TC5ghz
Now set the channel of the 2.4ghz in wireless options.. test 11, 8, 6, 1 in that order.
Unfortunately Apple have taken away the ability to set 5ghz channel.. even though it looks like it works it doesn't.
No improvement.. well consider returning it if it doesn't do what you want it is not fit for use.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station as an wireless Extender to new Airport time capsule

After many months of time machine back up problems. (verify back up failing) I am considering biting the bullet and getting a new 2TB Airport extreme time capsule. Can I use the old (late 2013 801.11ac) airport extreme to extend wifi network?
    A few other questions.
    1.Does extending reduce wifi performance?
    2. If using extreme as extender can I still plug in hard drive or hard drive to it?
    3.
currently using imac 21.5 (late 2013) 1TB backing up to 6TB WD mybook live duo (connected to Extreme using ethernet), via airport extreme base station (ac wireless band to mac)
    Any guidance appreciated.

Is it possible to quantify how much faster USB back up is compared to 802.11ac between mac and AirPort time capsule?
600GB should take 10 hours by ethernet. And it will be somewhat faster by USB3.. exactly how fast is difficult to predict as the first TM backup itself is slow due to many small files. In terms of raw speed maybe twice but it will depend on the disk used. USB you can use an SSD and get super huge speed. (not that I think you will be buying a 1TB SSD anytime soon).
In terms of raw speed it is cheese and chalk. The max speed of real world file transfer on AC wireless is around 430Mbps and that is using ideal world.
    http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/113-5-ghz-dn-c?see=MAX
This has nothing to do with link speed.. this is how fast a file actually transfers. And that is assuming the iMac and the TC are in the same room. And everything is perfect with nothing else using connection.
The real world speed of USB3 is around 100MB/s to a spinning hard disk..
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2039427/how-fast-is-usb-3-0-really-.html
which may indicate the limit is the actual disk speed. In bits per second you x 8.. so the USB3 is 800Mbps. The advantage of USB direct connection is that speed is available at all time. Not when your close or the load on wireless is low.
Further to your comments when extending. Is it only the area covered by extending that has reduced performance or all the wifi signal?
The speed will depend on hops..
So if the computer is using resources on a local router.. and only one wireless hop then it is fast.
If it is using resources via a second router so wireless goes.. computer--- router2----router1-- resource.
Your speed drops 50% at best.. at worst it is really bad.
For example.. computer 1 on router 1 accesses computer 2 hard disk on router2 with everything wireless.
    Count the hops. C1-R1, R1-R2, R2-C2
That gives 3 hops. So each packet is transmitted.. along that chain.. each transmission can only begin after it is received in full. Now add some other computers using resources.. say C3 is using internet via R1.. that has to be time sliced. So you get 50% of 50% of 50% of 50%. It is obvious that wireless networks have a huge handicap.. they cannot transmit and receive at the same time.. nor can they talk to more than one client at a time.. so add time slicing to wireless hopping.
Now ethernet is entirely different. It can transmit and receive at the same time.. ie is duplex. And in a switch it can talk to several computers at the same time. That is why we say.. as much as you can ethernet.. and use wireless as the last single hop to a client that needs it.. ie iphone or ipad.. or laptop if you cannot plug in ethernet.
Can the ac wifi format be extended using AirPort Extreme and time capsule.
Over very short range yes. AC wireless is only on 5ghz and is poor penetration of solids.. so this will work but maybe only to the next room.

I have a 10.5.7 iOS (Leopard).  It connects to wifi at speeds in the airport and has plenty of storage capacity and memory.
