Airport Time Capsule wifi not far enough

I just bought and installed an Airport Time Capule 3TB. It works great so far BUT it's installed in my office which is on one side of my house and on the first floor and my bedroom is on the second floor on the other side of the house. Any suggestions to extend the wifi so it will have a better signal on the other side of the house?
It's hard wired into my computer in my office so moving the unit isn't an option. Does Apple have something I can install midway thru the house to boost the signal?
Thanks for any help!

Does Apple have something I can install midway thru the house to boost the signal?
That would be an AirPort Express for a good choice, or an AirPort Extreme (same router as the new Time Capsule, but no hard drive built in) for the "best" choice.

  • My airport time capsule did not set up successfully, and then status light flash amber

    Hi, Guys
I am the first time user of the time capsule, please help how to proceed?
I have set up the first time and my airport time capsule does not set successfully, then I try to reset to factory setting. After this, although I use the ethenet cable to connect the router to the airport, the status light flash amber, always, even after the reset.
Also, I can see that airport time capsule base station from the wireless network when airport is plugged in. However, when I want to access to it.

Thanks for your guidance, but the product is really anoying. First, I am sure that the airpor utilities is 6.3.
and I also follow your instruction that to set the IPv6 as local link mode. But still get the same error as mentioned in my first post.
Therefore, I have tried to use the bridge mode but could not find it, and therefore still can not set it up successfully, even though I reset the factory again(press the reset button 5 secconds at least).

  • Airport time capsule does not appear within wi-fi networks on my OSX neither on my IOS devices, even though the backup for my OSX is on progress. why it does not appear?

Airport time capsule does not appear within wi-fi networks on my OSX neither on my IOS devices, even though the backup for my OSX is on progress. why it does not appear?
Is it because the backup on progress?

Hmmm.. ok.. well you are kind of on your own.. purchasing from another country leads to problems.. especially as the TC itself is regional .. all the setup applies to the region it is sold in.
Make sure you are using ipv6 in the computers..
    See
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4597
The 6.3 utility will not work without it.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Do a full reset and start over.
But there are no more controls.. you cannot set mode..
You can set wireless channels.. so do .. try different wireless names for the different bands.. and set fixed channels.. whatever your country allows, usually 2.4ghz you can use 1, 6, 11 but 13 maybe an option as well. 5ghz is much less clear and there are more variation. Just set to one channel and then another.
Set WPA2 Personal security with a 10-20 character password .. pure alphanumeric mix of upper and lower case and numbers.

  • Airport time capsule 2TB not emitting 802.11ac to my Late 2013 MBPr

this is displayed when I'm connected to the Airport Time Capsule from my late 2013 MacBrook Pro Retina 15"
My laptop is 802.11ac compatible however the connection to the airport seems to only connect in 802.11n
I've connected Airport to my Verizon Actiontec Mi424WR and have disabled wifi on the actiontec.
Any way I can modify the connection to connect at 802.11ac???

  • Time capsule wifi not working

My time capsule wifi is not working.  I believe the issue happened around a couple upgrades ago.
I've searched the internet the found that others have downgraded airport utility and time capsule firmware.
    Airport Utility - 5.6.1
    Time Capsule - 7.5.2
    OS x yosemite
I'm able to see the time capsule and backup but I can't see the wifi SID.

That is gen3 and getting well past the 3year reliable period.
I think you are simply due for replacement.
You can update the firmware to 7.6.4 although on these old units I recommend no greater than 7.6.1
And I doubt it will fix anything. There is no reason 7.5.2 should not work.
I am unsure how you are getting 5.6 utility to work in Yosemite.. but try using the native airport utility.. which is 6.3
Please open the airport utility and set fixed names for wireless and the base station that are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Then lock the wireless channel but put no wireless password onto the TC .. if it still won't work, sorry it is dead on the wireless side and it is time to replace.

  • Airport time capsule will not communicate with apple tv

I have just purchased the new AIRPORT TIME CAPSULE...it will not communicate with my APPLE TV..

Is the Time Capsule the only wireless router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to an Internet modem (and not another router) via Ethernet? Is the Apple TV in the same room, different room, or different floor from the Time Capsule?

  • Time Capsule Wifi not letting me connect to internet

I originally set up my Time Capsule and it had been working with my iPhone, iPad and a Windows based PC, which my secretary uses to connect to various clerk's websites that aren't compatible with Macs.  Several days ago the PC and mobile devices would show that they are connected to the wifi but would not access the internet.  I tried by switching from bridge mode (not sure how it got set on that anyways).  Then it says I cannot do that.  I am not connected to a modem but I'm directly wired into the ethernet port in my office building.
Anyone else have this problem and get it fixed?

The original setup allowed all your computers and devices to be exposed to everyone in the building.
I jumped to conclusions in my first post.. so let me now ask more closely.. do you own the modem and network in the building or is it shared with other tenants??
If you have direct access to the modem.. please plug a computer directly into the modem.. you can use the ethernet outlet in your office.. plug the pc directly into it.. do you have issues still accessing the websites you need?? If so the issue is the main modem and nothing to do with your TC.
If the computer works fine.. and all the websites are now accessible then you need to figure out a solution.. the easiest by far..
    1. replace the TC for a more standard router. PC can have big issues with the TC due to web port openings which do not work since PC use UPNP and Mac's use NAT-PMP.
You will have to tell me if the building and main modem is yours.. if it is then the router should be bridged.. if not you should have double NAT. And seriously consider buying your own network access if security is at all important. The TC can be bridged to the replacement router.. (a cheap simple WDR3600 TP-Link .. about $80 would do). The TC can still provide access to your Apple devices.
    2. If you want the TC to work with PC. I recommend the following.
Downgrade the firmware to 7.6.1 .. the latest firmware has issues.
Downgrade from the Mac. Simply hold the option key when you click version and older versions will show up.
Change all the names after a factory reset to names the PC deals with.. short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Work out if you are safe using bridge .. if not accept that double NAT is required.
The default settings of the TC are fine.. 10.0.1.1 will work with your modem which is set to 192.168.0.x
If things don't work.. give me more details of the age of the TC and things like what the main modem is and type of network etc.
It can be hugely difficult to answer this stuff over a forum. Especially when things were working fine one day and fail the next.. just figuring out which part of the neetwork is problematic. Our usual rule is substitute.. ie remove the TC and test direct.. if the problems go away you are wasting your time figuring it out without getting a replacement.
Consider seriously getting a Technician in to look at it. You can probably claim any costs on tax anyway. It is often better for a business to simply use a competent network computer tech to do these jobs.. than wasting your own time. (just a suggestion.. think of it as your washing machine.. do you strip it down and repair it when it goes bad or call a tech).

  • IPhone + Time Capsule wifi not working

My iPhone 3G works perfectly on public wifi, but when I try to connect to my Time Capsule, it connects, but when I go to Safari, it say's that it is not connected to the internet.
My TC's wifi works perfectly with my MacBook, but not with my iPhone.
Both the TC's, and iPhone's firmware is the latest version.
Please do not post ******** responses like reset the TC or go to forget this network or reset network settings. THIS DOES NOT WORK!
I have read somewhere, however, that the IP address shown on the iPhone should not be 169.xxx.xxx.xx ... it is. I've tried changing it using the static ip, but that doesn't work.
Please tell me step by step very clearly how to make this work. I don't mind reconfiguring the whole network if I have to. Thank you.

    Hello Reno,
It's a little difficult to help you without more detail on your existing network configuration.
It's strange that your Macbook works but your iPhone doesn't. I suspect the problem may be down to how the TC is configured into your network but can't be sure with the information you posted.
My set up works fine and it may help you to understand what I did. My set up is exactly as depicted on page 36 of this manual: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf.
I have a DSL modem/wireless router provided by my ISP. It acts as the DHCP and DNS servers for my network. I connected my TC to this other router via Ethernet cable and configured the TC as a simple bridge. In this setup the TC is just there to provide a fast wireless network for my Apple devices that support it. I connect all other boxes to the b/g wireless network coming from the ISP router.
All I did was follow the manual configuration instructions in the document above and it worked.
I hope that is of some help to you.
    Regards
    Ian

  • Airport Time Capsule wifi problems

My iPhone 5 will not connect to wifi when I come home from work. I will look at it later on and it is connected. My other apple devices(iPad 3rd gen, iPad mini retina, and another iPhone 5) will lose connection also. I can usually get them hooked back up by forgetting the network, restarting device, or restarting base station. My iPad will now not connect at all and all other devices are connected. Please help.

Now my ATC is giving me 3 different error messages. 1. Set up over WAN and it can decrease security.
    Turn off setup over wan.
    2. Base station does not have a valid IP address.
3.base station does not have any DNS server addresses.
Plug TC into your main modem by ethernet.. to WAN port of the TC. Do not use any other method of seutp.
If your main modem is a router as well.. put the TC in bridge mode manually.. ie edit and change the network tab to bridge.
If you main modem is a bridge device.. ie a pure cable modem.. the TC must be in router mode.. make sure it is.. dhcp + nat on the network tab.
Power down the modem and TC for at least 20min.. power modem up again.. wait 2 min, then power up the TC.
If you want more than generalisations you need to give us specifics.
What modem.. is it a router?
How is the TC connected to it?
Any screenshots you can give of the setup will help.

  • I have a rMBP that needs to be backed up.  The Wi-Fi in my house is poor and I do not have an Ex. Hard Drive.  I want to get the new Airport Time Capsule, but can you accomplish it's benefits wirelessly?

    So...
I have a modem across the house and my room is at the opposite side.  I believe that you have to connect the Airport Time Capsule via modem cable in order for you to appreciate the benefits of the boosted up Wi-Fi.  However, I want the airport time capsule in my room, without having any extra cables plugged into it AND also benefit from the Wifi boosts, as well as back it up wirelessly.
Is there any way to do this?  I was reading up on it and there are search queries bringing up "bridges" and all that stuff, but I haven't found a clear answer on it.
    So, to recap:
I want the Airport Time Capsule to not only back up my rMPB and help my wifi signal out, but to do all of this with no additional cables having to be plugged in.
    Thanks.

Trust me when I say this coming from 20 years of experience.
Get a powered external drive, format it 1 Partition Option: GUID and OS X Extended Journed as the format in Disk Utility.
Download and install Carbon Copy Cloner, clone internal drive to external drive.
Set a schedule to remind you to do it at least once a week, keep it near your charger.
When you plug your charger in, do plug the clone and power the machine up, set the display to sleep only,
    CCC will do the rest.
If you want to boot from it, hold the option/alt and select it Startup Manager.
I've seen many TimeMachine and TimeCapsule nightmares and so far haven't seen a problem from anyone using a bootable clone.
It's simple, it's easy, it's more reliable and more powerful than what Apple does and it only takes plugging in a extra cable.
Make as many clones as you want, keep them time seperated, off site etc. etc.
Cables don't have network issues, clones can be verified in seconds merely by booting from them.
Clones protect your productivity, your up in seconds on a clone despite even the hard drive dying.
Software problem? No sweat, boot of the clone and reverse clone your problems away.
If you want to fuss and muss with half implemented TimeMachine and TimeCapsule network headaches then prepare to suffer.
I don't like to suffer, I bought a Mac not to suffer, but it appears you do with TimeMachine and TimeCapsule.

  • Can use time capsule wifi but can't find time capsule in finder.

I have a 3TB time capsule that I bought about a month ago. I can use the WIFI but all of a sudden I can't find time capsule in finder. How do I locate it?
Thanks in advance for the help.

It is the Mavericks OS usually.
Try a simple reboot of the TC.. that is often enough. No luck..
Try a full network restart in correct order.. ie modem.. wait 2min.. TC .. wait 2min.. clients.
    No luck..
Manually mount the TC using Go, Connect to Server in Finder.
    Type in AFP://TCname.local or AFP://TCIPaddress
where you use the actual network name in place of the TCname.. ie not the name on the TC.. unless it is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. which I do strongly advise. But its network name which is without spaces and no illegal characters which apple recommends you use.. eg apostrophe.
So Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule is not the real network name.
It will become fred_blogs_airport_time_capsule which is a bad name still.
Easier use the IP, eg 10.0.1.1 for TCIPaddress.

  • HT1178 AirPort Time Capsule set-up issues.

The initial set-up of my AirPort Time Capsule does not complete. The error message is "No configured AirPort base stations have been found".  I have connected the TC to the ISP modem/wireless router with an Ethernet cable.  The AirPort Utility has a green dot for Internet underneath the picture of the world.  When I check the status of the connection there is a yellow dot for "Internet Connection" and a yellow dot for "No DNS servers".  My reading found that this new TC should be set up as the primary base station if you are connected to an existing network.  I do not know how to do that.  It was also suggested that I disable the wireless radio on the ISP modem/wireless router instead of having two networks.  I have not done that yet as when I contacted the ISP techie he advised that I just set up two networks instead of turning off their wireless radio.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

My reading found that this new TC should be set up as the primary base station if you are connected to an existing network
That would not be correct. If the TC is set up as the primary base station, then it will be handing DHCP and NAT routing duties......when it should be in Bridge Mode, since you have another router "upstream" on the network that is already handling the same network services.
The result is two devices both competing against each other trying to control the routing functions on your network, causing conflicts and other issues.....which likely explains your results. You only want one device doing this on a network.....which means that the TC should be setup in Bridge Mode on your network.
It was also suggested that I disable the wireless radio on the ISP modem/wireless router instead of having two networks.
There is usually no need to do this unless you find that there are interference issues being created between the networks. It won't hurt to turn off the wireless on the modem/router, but then again it may not help either. My advice would be to leave the network on at least for the present time, but your call on that one.
I suggest that you start over and try the setup again on the TC.
If you decide to do this, with the TC powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the TC firmly for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the TC to restart to a slow, blinking amber light. If you have a new TC, the reset button is located to the right of the power cord port on the back of the TC.
Connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <--> ports on the modem/router to the WAN "O" port on the TC
On your Mac, open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click the Other WiFi Devices button
    Click on Time Capsule
Or, if you are using an iPhone or iPad for the setup....
On the home screen, tap Settings
    Tap WiFi
Under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station, tap Time Capsule
AirPort Utility will take a minute to analyze the connections and then suggest a setup. The window will look like the example below, except that you will see a Time Capsule icon.
Type in a name that you want to use for your TC wireless network
Type in a device name that you want to call the TC
Type in a password for the wireless network and device
    Verify the password
    Click Next
The utility should configure everything for you in a minute or two. When you see the display indication of Setup Complete, click Done
That should be all that you need to do.
At this point, you should be able to locate the wireless network that you created on the TC, and enter the password to connect.

  • My MacBook Pro is currently online via wifi, but the airport utility doesn't recognize the airport time capsule base station and has not backed up in 10 days

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15 inch is currently online, with good (albeit slow... although that is due to the service provider) internet connectivity via wifi.  The icon shows that I am connected to my network with full bars.  I use an Airport Time Capsule as my wireless router, purchased late last year, and it has worked well until now.  Internet comes via cable modem (provided by the cable company), and can be patchy and quirky, so I am often rebooting the modem, but the airport wifi router typically does not need to be rebooted with the modem to regain connectivity.
My problem is that my time capsule has not backed up in more than 10 days.  When I went to investigate this, it claims it cannot find the time capsule.  when I open the airport utility on the laptop it claims there is no airport connected (although there is the green light next to the internet icon).  I checked on this using the airport utility app on my iPad, and it has no problem identifying the router as an airport time capsule.  I did update the firmware on the router using the app on the iPad, but it made no difference to the laptop.
First question: Do you think this is a problem with the Airport router or my MacBook?
Second Question: what can I do about it?
My MacBook feels like it is on its last legs anyway, so I am currently looking at replacements, but I really want to make sure it is backed up in case it dies before the new one arrives!!  On the other hand, we have serious power issues here, and while the router is on a UPS, the UPS battery is basically fried and conks out in about 5 minutes, so the Airport is constantly being cycled on and off, which I worry could also be causing problems with the proper operation of the device (although the fact that it works with the iPad makes me think that is not the case... but I don't really know).
    Thanks!

  • WiFi Printer not being found on AirPort Time Capsule

Hi, I have an older HP Officejet 6500 that works fine via WiFi.  I recently bought an Airport Time Capsule for Time Machine backups and a better wireless router (version is 7.7.3).
Suddenly, my WiFi HP printer, which is connected to the Airport Wireless Router, can't be found by any of my macs, iPhones, or iPads.  I had no problem printing from any of these devices when the printer was connected to my previous wireless router.
I've searched and searched this evening for help and can't find any solutions.  I've tried resetting, checking for firmware upgrades, unplugging the printer and router.  No luck so far.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Desperate in Texas!!!

I suggest deleting your existing printer from System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, and adding it again. Better yet is to "reset the printing system" as described here: Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
After you do that you will need to add the printer again according to the instructions here:
OS X Yosemite: Add or remove a printer

  • AirPort Time Capsule (firmware v7.7.3) has slow wifi connection to new Surface Pro 3

I got a new Surface Pro 3 i7. I have all the updates for it. I ran into a problem that many others also ran into which was very slow WiFi performance. I utilized many troubleshooting methods and sources and I am currently inclined to believe this... the new Marvell AVASTAR Wireless-AC Network Controller drivers are not compatible with my Airport Time Capsule firmware version 7.7.3.
    Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there another firmware version that works (older or newer)?
    Details:
I tried all kinds of things, like changing the network drivers on the SP3 to many different versions. Many of the help forums recommended using the drivers dated 4/24/2014. This did seem to help, but not reliably. What I discovered is... if I connect using the SP3 WiFi to my network extension Airport Express on version 7.6.4, I reliably get 20-22 mbps (which is the best I can expect from my network and works great for my needs). But, when I connect to my primary network Airport Time Capsule, the best I can get is 1.5 mbps, but usually between .15 and .9 mbps. It's completely unusable in today's internet environment. At the same time, I used my iPhone and the Airport Utility to verify the connections.  I used SpeedTest.net on my MacBook, iPad, iPhone and Win8.1 HP laptop to verify that every other device was getting the 20+mbps. And they did.  Only the Surface Pro 3 couldn't perform when using WiFi through the Airport Time Capsule. The SP3 does achieve 20+ mbps like all my other devices, but only when connected to the Airport Express.
The articles I read said that the network drivers on the SP3 seem to require the routers to be updated to the latest versions. Both the Airport Time Capsule and the Airport Express seem to be updated. When I go into their settings using the Airport Utility, there are no updates available.
Of course this problem isn't replicated at the Microsoft store since they don't have apple routers.  So, their response is to upgrade the routers.  Extremely unhelpful when the Apple software is saying it is upgraded already. I can't believe this new Airport Time Capsule has to be retired because it isn't playing well with others, and I love the automatic backup it is providing for my MacBook. So, somehow, I need the Airport Time Capsule to work with the new WiFi card & drivers on my SP3, just like the SP3 is working properly with the Airport Express.

    Thanks for your input!
    1. No downgrade. Bummer, but understandable.
    2. Completely agree!!! I did too and then I had to redo it because I couldn't install a driver. I had to start all over and reinstall Win 8 then Win 8.1 over it. It was a colossal waste of time and endless frustration. If I can just get it modestly working, I'll take it. It doesn't have to be perfect right now.
    3.  Great suggestion! And the Microsoft forums are also a buzz. One suggestion I tried (and it seems to be working) is to set a separate wireless network name for the 5ghz band. I haven't thoroughly tested it yet, but I'm hopeful.  I t seems to have worked for some, but not others. The next thing I'll try is fixing the channel, but strangely, I didn't see that option in the AirPort Utility app on my iPhone. Is it only available through Mac/PC laptop/desktop software?
    4. Yup. Sigh. I actually have an old linksys. I retired it when I went 100% apple. I was hoping that things would work smoother. And they did! Until this SP3 came into my life. Arg.
And and a few more details...
the AirPort Time Capsule is 802.11ac
the AirPort Express is 802.11n (2nd gen)
I'm wondering if it is the AC connection that is the issue. Maybe since the Express always connects with n, it is OK....
Nope. Just tested the SP3 again and it is maintaining it's connection to the AirPort Time Capsule utiling the 802.11a/n/ac mode and connecting to the 5Ghz special network name. So far so good... Fingers crossed...
