AirPort to AirPort communication

I currently use an AirPort Express for my WiFi. I wanted to extend the network range within my home so I planned to purchase an  AirPort Extreme but I've also just purchased a Direct TV DVR unit that would be located on another floor of my home, away from my internet provider's line. My question is this: Can I place one AirPort right at the DVR and have the other "talk" to it from my base station so I can establish wireless control over the DVR?
Many thanks in advance!

You can use multiple AirPort base stations in an extended wireless network configuration. Please check out the following Apple Support article for details.
The end result is that you would have a single "extended" wireless network created by both base stations. Network clients, like the Direct TV DVR, should be able to connect to this network for both local network connectivity and Internet access.

  • Airport card, Airport express setup

Hi, I'm trying to set up my G3 iBook to connect wirelessly to the internet.
    My setup:
    -Comcast cable modem
    -D-Link 604 router
    -Airport Card
    -Airport Express
-Latest OS, and drivers for everything
The card is properly installed as I pick it up in system profile and I pick up a very strong signle. I can configure AX with the set up but it will not connect to the internet.
I'm at my wits end. I've tried everything I can think of and have read.
    Thanks in advance.

Ensure that you configure the AX to not distribute IP addresses.

Maybe you are looking to re-purpose this equipment versus getting rid of it if so, the best thing to do is search the internet for tutorials.  And I say this because it's what I would do, there are a lot of tutorials online.    Hope you can find good use for them.  Worse case scenario if you can't find something right now, package them very nicely and when you come across something unbox and enjoy.  I've re-purposed a mac color classic and LOVE IT!!

  • How do I find out how to upgrade eMac to airport or airport extreme?

    Hi,
I just bought a used eMac for our non profit theater ... it does not have the airport card. How do I find out if I need airport or airport extreme ... what do I need to do/know to upgrade to wireless
    Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Once you have identified your eMac, this page will tell you if Airport, or Airport Extreme is necessary:

If the original airport card is necesssary, Apple no longer sells this card, and you can find it here:

  • Airport Extreme, Airport Express network extending not working

I have had the Airport Extreme base statin for a while now and have had it running fine on my two computers, ones a Macbook Pro and the other is a Sony laptop. My brother recently moved in with me and he has not been getting a good enough signal to run his computer off the extreme. We bought the Airport Express to be an extender of the network. I have tried about every configuration in setting it up but for some reason his computer does not want to work. He is also using a Sony, but an older Sony with Xp and no Wireless Card, so he is using a Wireless USB adapter. I can set everything up, everything is Green and he still can't use the network, what is even more weird is that his computer wont even see the Airports in Airport Utility. Any ideas on what to do next?

I am pretty sure that it does. He can get the signal and access the internet, every once and a while, the other night it worked for an hour straight before it stopped working and hasn't worked since. I am about to take back the USB wireless adapter and try something else. I am so frustrated because he wont get off my back.

To free up hard drive space the best bet is to move data files that you don't need access to all the time. Likely candidates are music, video, and photos. Things like word processing and spreadsheet files can also be moved but they tend not to be very large and so don't free up much space. The problem with moving the above mentioned files is that iTunes and iPhoto need to know where the files are stored.
Here's an article explaining how to move the iTunes folder. You can move the iPhoto library using the Finder but there is a slight complication. Start iPhoto, open the Preferences and click on the Advanced tab. The first option is "Copy items to the iPhoto Library". If this option is checked, copy the iPhoto library to your external folder (drag it from the Pictures folder to your external drive) and then delete it from your Picture folder. If this option is not checked, it is a bit more complicated and we'll need to talk a bit.

  • HT4628 I am trying to switch from AirPort to AirPort Extreme

I am trying to switch from AirPort to AirPort Extreme. Followed all the directions, but cannot get APE
to work unless AP is still plugged in. Frustrated. Help.

Tapping the words don't work in iOS 7. Just swipe up or down anywhere on the screen until the mode that you want to use appears in yellow type on the right side. Yellow type indicates the selected mode.
Remember - swipe up or down to get to the mode that you want to use.

  • AirPort, older AirPort Extreme Base Station, AirPort Express, Newer AirPort Extreme Base Station

This may sound like a fairly dumb question, but here goes anyway:
I have a 27" iMac with the following AirPort Extreme card:
Card Type:    AirPort Extreme  (0x168C, 0x8F)
    Firmware Version:    Atheros 9280: 2.1.14.6
For a Base Station, I'm currently using a pretty long-in-the-tooth M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station (with modem and antenna port)
I recently bought an Airport Express:
    AirPort Express MB321LL/A (A1264) to
    A. Use AirTunes to send iTunes from my Man Cave on the first floor at one end of the house to the family room on the first floor at the other, where it will connect to an A/V setup, and, probably, one of my USB printers
    B. Act as a repeater for the AirPort Extreme Base Station, which is physically closer to the Man Cave than to the family room. My wife and I use our ancient-but-hangin'-in-there iBook G4s in the family room (and upstairs) to check email, eBay, etc. Both in the family room and especially upstairs, we sometimes get only 2-3 bars on the AirPort signal strength indicator in the menu bar.
I see that I can get, from a well-known third-party retailer, an AirPort Extreme 802.11n A1143 (1st Generation), for an exceptionally reasonable price.
My question is, what would getting the AirPort Extreme 802.11n A1143 do for me, if anything? I know it would give me one more signal source in the repeater chain, and I could probably put the Auld Nyle M8799LL/A in the stairway or upstairs to boost the signal upstairs, and I could use the USB port in the AirPort Extreme A1143 for connecting another USB printer or USB external hard drive (would this drive be available to any Mac on the AirPort network?)
Any other configuration possibilities and suggestions greatly appreciated!
    Peace & Love

Thank you for the prompt reply and the very helpful links. I'm going through all the support docs right now, but from your explanation and what I've seen in the support docs so far, it would appear that the maximum bandwidth is achieved by a physically-connected "Roaming Network."
I'm so out of it, I'm afraid I'd never heard  of "Powerline adapters," but I looked them up, and I guess this is the system that uses "Romex" - style standard house wiring to carry signal, which cuts down on each individual Base Station's power overhead (does it also affect bandwidth?).
I see a lot of names selling these adapters -- Western, D-Link, NETGEAR, ZyXEL, Monster, Sling Media, PowerNet, Cisco-Linksys, Actiontec, Medialink, Rosewill, TRENDnet -- and a lot of different configurations: 1 port, 2 ports, 4 ports. Basically I have one 27" iMac that doesn't go anywhere (it's not too portable!), a couple iBook G4s, and a point where I want to run 1/8" mini-jack-to-RCA L/R audio cable from the AirPort Express to an A/V receiver. I doubt this configuration is going to change, as I'm 63, and too lazy to lug stuff around if I don't have to. What do you think would be the best solution for me, considering I just ordered the AEBSn and I already have a brand-new AXn. Should the 27" iMac, since it ain't movin', be connected by ethernet/"Powerline adapter", rather than relying on the internal Airport Extreme card? I guess what I'm asking is, given what I want to do, how many of these Powerline adapters, what kind (do you recommend), with how many ethernet ports do I need?
Thank you again for your prompt and informed help.

  • Confused about which would be best. Is there a site I can quickly compare airport express, airport extreme and time capsule?

I'm confussed about which would suit me better and was looking for a comparison chart to quickly see the differences of each. Is there a site I can quickly compare the Airport Express, the Airport Extreme and the Time Capsule? The Time Capsual is a little more obvious seeing as it lets one back up one's hard drive, but I'd still like to see it's other features in comparison.

There is. Look at the AirPort Express page....Mac > Accessories > AirPort Express.... or look here:

I have a Macbook Pro running OSX Lion (10.7.3). Is it true that I must have an Airport or Airport Extreme Card installed in my Mac to set up my Airport Express?  Nothing was said of this when I purchased this item at the Apple Store.

no u dont have to install any card...your mac will detect the airport express once its working and u can configure ur Airport xpress using ur macbook pro..

  • Incredibly Perplexing AirPort Express / AirPort Snow Problem

I was happily browsing the web until midnight last night, then nothing.
    1. Charter Cable Internet works fine when plugged directly into cable modem via ethernet cable
    2. Internet works fine wirelessly on both computers (iBook G4, MacBook, both running 10.4.10) when tapping into neighbor's wireless network (which is how I'm e-mailing you)
    3. Neither computer will access the internet on either our AirPort or AirPort Express, even though we get a full signal and both are recognized. I have done hard resets on both to no avail. Note: the AirPort and AirPort Express are run one at a time.
So, our wireless cards are fine. We can tap into a network. Our
connection to the Internet is fine.
What would be the problem for both computers and both the AE and AirPort when tapping into charter via the wireless system.

I called the completely unhelpful people at Charter and they said no changes have been made to their protocol. But, the IP number I was being assigned was not a valid one. Of course, they had no interest in helping me get a valid one.

Have you verified that the snow AirPort base station (ABS) and AirPort Express (AX) are configured properly to get an IP address from the cable modem? Did the ISP recently change settings?
When you connect either the ABS or AX to the cable modem are you properly resetting the cable modem to detect a new device?
When you connect either the ABS or AX to the cable modem, is the link indicator on the cable modem indicating a good connection to the ABS or AX?

  • PC sees Airport but airport wants unknown code to allow access

Greetings My brother in law brings his HP laptop over and starts it up. It sees my Airport but Airport demands a code of some type in order to allow access. What is this code? It isn't the password. How do I retreive this number from the airport? Thank you for your time and consideration of my question

    Duane,
I have exactly the same problem. I've been backed into a corner and forced to buy a laptop. It's a new Sony and it does see my airport wireless network "Pete's Network". It is password protected. The PC asks for a "network key" also called a WEP or a WPA. I enter what I think is the password and it tells me it needs to be 40 or 104 bits and can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii or 10 or 26 hex characters.
I need help on this and don't want to complain too much but is Microsoft out their @#$&^%$$%#%$# minds?
    Thank you
    Peter

  • What is the maximum operating time of the airport and airport extreme?

What is the maximum operating time of the airport and airport extreme? Can I leave it on for long periods of time, like never turning it off? Will it affect the performance of the said products?

Apple does not include an "Off" button on the AirPorts since they assume that you will leave it on all the time, like you would a modem.
If you are going to be gone for a week or two, it might make sense to power everything off during that time.
Otherwise, leaving the device(s) "On" actually results in less stress on the device that constantly turning it "Off" and "On". In other words, odds are the device will last longer if you leave it "On" most of the time.
Apple does not publish a life expectancy for the devices, but 5-7 years...on average....for a modem or router is about right....my opinion here.

  • Airport Express Drops Communication

The cable modem is still going, and the green light still solid green. I can join my network. But, constant timeouts when accessing anything. No connection to the internet at all.
After restart of Airport Express, I get about 10-15 seconds of being able to load pages. Then, nothing.
I disconnected the airport from the modem, and connected the modem directly to the computer - and it works fine. So, the problem must be somewhere between the Airport and the Computer, right?
I tried a number of things in Airport Admin Utility, and I continue to get the same thing happening.
The Airport was purchased sometime in early 2005 (?), so, maybe it has just died?
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem after I upgraded to Leopard and installed the newest R1800 driver from Epson and I got the same response from Epson. The Gutenprint driver does work but it does not handle color management properly and as you have discovered, not all of the print options are properly supported.
You can solve the problem by reverting to the older V3.0aAs driver available at Epson's website. When I did this I believe I used the epson installer to uninstall the v6.12 driver. Then I restarted and installed V3.0aAs and restarted once again. The old printer driver was automatically selected when I installed the printer.
Note. Before you do this, upgrade to 10.5.2 and see if that resolves the problem. The installation notes state that this upgrade resolves the issues printing to "some" printers but it does not say which. If this works, please post your findings and the rest of us R1800 owners can re-install the new driver.
