Airport to DSL?

I'm helping my son with his iMac (blue) slot loading G3 machine that is running 9.2
Verizon sold him a package for DSL that requires OS X to work. He his remote from home where he had been using MacWireless to Airport to cable for connectivity.
Doesntt have a lot of $. What is a simple approach to get him connected besides riding piggy back on some unsuspecting wireless user in the building that hasn't passworded thier device? Going to OS X? (I assume this will be a prob with some apps). Is it possible to go through an airport to DSL?
Jon

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Just connect the airport base station to the DSL modem. The airport base station can login via PPPoE and provide a DHCP address for the Mac OS 9 machine to connect to.

  • How to use iMac w/Airport and DSL connection as a wireless router ???

My iMac G5 (with Airport) is connected via Ethernet to a DSL modem.
I want to connect my iBook G3 (non-Airport) wirelessly through the G5 to access the internet in a small home network, (without a standalone router).
I have a USB adapter (ASUS wl-167G) and MAC OS drivers for the iBook. I seem to be getting a connection to the Airport card in the G5, but nothing to the modem with Safari or Firefox.
I need some detailed instructions on setting up the iMac to access the DSL normally AND pass through a wireless connection for the iBook.
Future plans are to buy an Airport Express for stereo and printer purposes.
If using the Express will greatly simplify what I'm trying to do here, please advise so, (and how), and I'll get one now.
    Thanks
    Ken

Thanks sig, but I am already set up that way. Also in sharing>internet>
    Airport options: channel-automatic, firewall-off, services-on (file sharing,Etc.)
Network Status shows: Built -in -Ethernet, active and a IP address. Airport, sharing is on and using Airport and an ID #
I also tried setting Airport to channel 11 (what the USB "Dongle" is connected to).
    Still no joy.
I think I may need to manually configure both Airport TCP/IP in the iMac, and the USB Adapter in the iBook but I don't know what values to enter for IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router.
In way over my head, here. Any additional help is greatly appreciated.

  • Newbie: Airport Express, DSL internet, G4 iBook, and me

    Hello everyone!
I have just purchased an Airport Express (with AirTunes), to connect to the internet wirelessly. I have the latest generation g4 iBook (before they switched to the new MacBook models), and so it came installed with an Airport card, software, etc.
I connect to the internet with a DSL modem, and normally I would connect to the modem with an ethernet cable.
I am having trouble setting up the Airport Express so it can connect to my ISP, and I'm not finding the right place to enter my ISP login information (username and password).
Can anyone help with this? I've tried the Airport Setup assistant, but it didn't work!
    Many thanks to everyone!

rdisanto, Welcome to the discussion area!
Does your ISP use PPPoE for the connection? If so, configure the AirPort Express (AX) to use PPPoE and you will be able to enter that information.
You will find this on the "Connect using:" drop down menu on the Internet tab in the AirPort Admin Utility.

  • NetMeeting on a PC via Airport Express & DSL

    Hi,
I have a DSL-modem connected to an AirPort Express. My PC Laptop can reach internet this way and I can run Skype. I am now trying to set up NetMeeting (microsoft) on the PC Laptop and have questions on how to configure the AirPort. I have tried to fill in values for ports
    i (www.microsoft.com/windows/NetMeeting/Corp/reskit/Chapter4/default.asp#two)
in Port Mapping using the AirPort Administration Tool.
    - Am I getting closer the solution?
PS. How do I fill in "dynamically assigned ports" DS.

The solution recommended when using NetMeeting across most wireless routers (like the Airport Express) is to use the router's "DMZ" function - which forwards ALL incoming ports to the private IP address of the PC laptop.
For a detailed discussion on how to use port mapping (and DMZ) on an Airport Express see How do I use port mapping?

  • Connecting airport to dsl

I'm sure there's an easy way to do this: I have an old g3 imac that is not wireless, and on a dsl modem. I just got a macbook and an airport extreme (so I can print from the macbook.)
How do I hook the extreme up to my system? The instructions assume my household is completely wireless.
My extreme doesn't have a modem.

You connect an Ethernet cable from your DSL Modem to the WAN Port on the Airport EXTREME Base. Then you can connect another Ethernet cable to your older iMac G3 from the LAN port.
This will allow your Macbook to be wireless and your old iMac to be hard wired. Then you can connect the printer to the USB Port on the Airport Extreme Base, if it is a compatible printer.
You will want your Airport Extreme Base to be DHCP and it will assign IP's.
Get out the little booklet that came with the Airport Extreme Base and it will give you several options on setting up your Network.

  • Possible wifi conflict between airport and dsl modem wifi

I want add my TC to my wifi system. The existing wifi is based on a frontier modem connected to a DSL line. Will the existing wifi or the airport be the functioning wifi?

Either or both.. it is up to you.
Set one to channel 1 and set the other to channel 11. Then both can work happily together.. although I would space them a couple of meters.

  • Airport Extreme DSL internet connection

I have an SBC Yahoo DSl connection via DSL modem and an Airport Extreme. My iMac is my main computer and I would like to connect it directly to the internet via ethernet cable without having to rely on the airport, since its' signal has been less than reliable. I would still like to use the airport however so that we can connect our laptops wirelessly to the internet. Can I connect the airport to the DSL modem and then plug the iMac directly into the Ethernet/LAN port on the base station and be connected (not actually using the wireless signal). I've tried but it doesn't seem to work (Always says "Could not find a PPPoE server." But I can connect wirelessly. I just get sick of the signal dropping out periodically and would like to avoid the wireless connection to the internet on my iMac, but still allow our laptops to connect wirelessly. Any hints as to what I might be doing wrong?
    Thanks.

It sounds like you might be loosing your connection to interference.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58543
The only way I can think of to do what you want to do is an A-B switch
You would run an ethernet cable from your computer to the switch and then you would have the A port to the WAN port and the B side to the LAN side
thus A would be wireless and B would be hard wired.
I am not sure how good it would work.
I have SBC as well and I don't suffer any of the drops you speak of.
    Cheers Don

  • Connecting Airport Extreme to a DSL

I have recently acquired an Airport Extreme which is connected to the DSL via an old Linksys Router. Signal keeps dropping and is slow especially in distant rooms. What is the best way to connect airport to DSL.
Does the Linksys wireless need to be disabled, if so please advise me how to do it.
    Thank you.

If you add an AirPort Extreme to your existing Frontier Net network and permanently connect the AirPort Extreme to the Frontier wireless router using a wired Ethernet cable connection...
AND......you locate the AirPort Extreme in another part of your house where you need more wireless signal strength and coverage.......
AND......you configure the AirPort Extreme to create a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name and password as the Frontier wireless network.......
Then, you will have a much "bigger" wireless network with much greater range with higher wireless speeds throughout the house.
That would be be a good investment if your goal is to have a much bigger wireless network with greater range and speed throughout the house.

  • Airport Extreme & MacBook & MacBook Pro: only one can talk to Airport

I've got an Airport Extreme is in bridge mode and hooked via an ethernet cable to an SMC router. The SMC device is a wireless (and four wired ethernet ports) router. It's attached via ethernet cable to a DSL modem. All the settings on the Airport Extreme are for the it to be connected to a router and DCHP. I've also got two Airport Expresses to extend the range of the Airport Extreme. I have a Canon printer attached to the Airport Extreme.
In our home we have a black MacBook (10.5.6), a MacBook Pro (10.4.11), Pismo PowerBook (10.4.11), an Apple TV, an iPhone and wireless security web cam.
The problem is that either the MacBook or the MacBook Pro can go through the Airport Extreme to the internet. If the MacBook can go through the Airport Extreme, then the MacBook Pro cannot. If the MacBook Pro can go through the Airport Extreme, then the MacBook cannot.
All computers can get to the Internet via the SMC router wirelessly at the same time.
The Pismo, Apple TV, iPhone and web cam have no problem going through the Airport Extreme to the internet regardless of what's going on between the two MacBooks
No matter what, wireless printing works for all computers.
The MacBook is a "clone" of the MacBook Pro. Internet sharing is on for both MacBooks. Both have unique AirPort ID numbers.
After powering down the DSL modem, SMC router and Airport Extreme and then restarting everything (MacBooks, Airport Extreme, DSL modem) the first MacBook that I use to connect to the Internet always work and the other one never works.
I would like both MacBooks to be able to access the internet via the Airport Extreme.
What is the problem and what is the solution? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Note: This is a long (years) and ongoing problem and I've posted (over a year ago) before with no luck.

    Hi,
"Internet sharing is on for both MacBooks." Why is that? Try to disable Internet sharing on both.
Furthermore I understand that your SMC device is wireless enabled too. Make your configuration more simple by disabling that. Your Airport Extreme can handle that since it is bridged.
See if we can get somewhere.

  • Troubles with new DSL modem (moto 3260)

    Folks,
My old 2wire died and I picked up a Motorola 3260 from ATT....been reading a lot of articles on these boards but I'm stymied trying to get this to work with my Airport Extreme (and MBP on Mountain Lion)
I actually seemingly had the Modem-Airport-Computer connection working for a few minutes, but the connection quickly fell apart and I'm busy trying to methodically put it all backk together.
    1) Reset modem and pulled power. Put modem back in non-bridged mode. Got new DSL password from ATT. Attached directly to computer through ethernet cable. Works!
    2) Put modem into bridged mode. Cycled power on modem and computer. Set computer to "DHCP with manual address" so I could directly access the modem's settings pages. Verifed that modem showed up in bridged mode.
    3) Set computer to DHCP (without manual adress)....renewed lease.....shut computer down and powered back up. Created PPPoE service on computer to see if I could get that working first before doing the same thing with the Airport....but this failed to connect! NOTE: I had gotten this working yesterday a few times, but not today.
So, this is the main issue....I can't seem to get PPPoE working via my computer to DSL modem directly, or when I use the AIrport to DSL modem.
If anyone has any pointers or advice, I would REALLY appreciate it!!!
    Thanks!
    Tom

    Sorry for the difficulties.
I have used the Motorola 2210 for a number of years with rock solid performance. The modem is not exactly in Bridge Mode....it is set to PPPoE is on the computer or router.  I do not know if the 3360 has that option.
It appears as if the 3360 has replaced the 2210....I have not tried a 3360 yet.
I use an Airport Extreme which is configured to provide the PPPoE connection service. No special setup, or hidden settings, etc. Been running fine for 4+ years.
Not sure why you are having so much trouble, when it appears that you are doing everything right.
You may have already thought of this, but it is possible to run PPPoE on the modem, and have the AirPort Extreme connect using "Ethernet".  That will create a Double NAT error, but this is usually not serious, and AirPort Utility provides you with an option to "ignore" the error, so you get a green light, and not flashing amber.
I have run the network this way from time to time if for no other reason than experiment. The Double NAT does not seem to affect anything noticeably....unless you are using online gaming or other things that will not tolerate a Double NAT.
One of the advantages of using Double NAT is that you can bring up the modem settings simply by typing in the 192.168.1.254. Of course, if the network is running OK, there is not much reason to do this.
I'm not recommending that you use the Double NAT setup, but it might be worth a try to see how you like it...or if it works.  Post back if need a few tips on this.

  • Airport Express won't update

As I signed up for HDTV from my local provider, they swapped out their old DSL modem and my router and replaced it with a 2Wire (http://www.2wire.com/index.php?p=399) combined modem/router. My AP Express hasn't worked since. When I do the setup, everything works well until the update is supposed to happen. The utility then cannot find the AWD to update it. The APX no longer will do a factory reset either. Could it possible be the new modem/router? I've tried all sorts of suggestion, on resurrecting the APX, from various forums on the net to no avail. Any suggestions? Is it possibly dead

Is your 2Wire equipped with WiFi? If so, do a factory reset on all your hardware including your APX and then do exactly the following in order:
    1) Create wireless network using WEP security and 13 digit key (password)
    2) Connect Airport to DSL modem
    3) Reset Airport
    4) Open Airport Utility
    5) Choose "Join Existing Wireless Network"
    6) Fill in appropriate fields
You're done! You can now disconnect your APX from your 2Wire and they should both be sharing the same network.

  • You Are Not Connected to the Internet - it happens too often

    Month old MBP.
Very often I'm surfing the net wirelessly and the next thing I get is the annoying message saying: You Are Not Connected to the Internet. This happens at my office (closed network), my house (closed network, and at a friend's house (open network). I am sure if I were to wirelessly use the MBP elsewhere I would frequently get the same message.
So I click on the Network Diagnostics button... it shows the two bottom buttons in red (internet & server), so I click through the procedure... it says there is nothing wrong and the two bottom lights change back to green. In other instances, it gets to the end of the process and asks to restart a device, so I click OK (without touching the modem or restarting anything) and the two green lights appear again; leaving me able to surf as per usual.
I now have to leave Network Diagnostics open so I can quickly fix the connection.
    Any ideas?

This happens all the time to my 2-year old 17" and never to my brother's 15" that was purchased in August. I still have a Wi-Fi connection but the internet isn't working. Usually going down to the basement and resetting my airport and DSL box does the trick, but it's still a pain in the behind. I think I read somewhere that Apple knows about and is working on this issue.

  • Download error -100000

There are many discussion topics here about people having problems with certain tracks that refuse to download from the iTunes Store.  On a desktop machine, the track will download almost completely, then restart 3 times before giving up saying that the file may be corrupt and reporting error -100000.  On iOS devices, you get the "Tap to Retry" error.
Some responses, particularly from Windows users, say that the problem lies in conflict with third party firewall software.
Another suggestion, which applies to Mac users as well, is to delete the .tmp download files.
Both of these suggestions were recommended to me by iTunes support over a period of several days when I was having difficulty with a single track from an album purchased from the iTunes store (Mary / The Great Impression (Deluxe Version) / Sparkadia).  Neither suggestion worked.  Nor did software updates, restarts, clearing caches, deleting preferences or anything else I tried.
My home is entirely an Apple environment except for a Dlink ADSL modem.  So if there is a software conflict, it is more likely to be Apple v Apple or Apple v my ISP.
In the end, after more than a week of frustration, I have found a work-around that worked first time.  I used my iPhone as a personal hotspot and connected my iMac to the internet via the phone, instead of going through my home Airport network, DSL modem and ISP.  Bingo!
I hope this helps anyone suffering the same problem.  Good luck!

I have the same problem. I tried downloading the song using a different computer on a different network without success, so I'm not sure your solution is general. The Apple techs I am in discussions with seem to be unaware of the scale of this problem as discussed on these pages.

  • One web page won't load in any browser

I have one site that all of a sudden, won't load in any stand-alone browser (have tried Firefox, Camino, Safari, Opera). I get a time-out error. The will load, however, if I use the AOL browser or a cloaking site. I checked with my ISP which says it doesn't block any site. In fact, the rep said he had no problem going directly to the site. I have turned off firewall, shut down and restarted AirPort and DSL modem, reloaded software to AirPort, all to no avail. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this or how to fix it?

That site works fine for me.
You need Flash to use their facility.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
