AirPort troubles (though AirPort doesn't think so)

OK, so for a long while (soon after I upgraded to Leopard I think), I've been having problems with the AirPort connection to my modem/router. Basically, I can connect fine and the internet works perfectly for a few minutes, but then suddenly I lose my internet connection. The weird thing is AirPort claims to still be connected to my modem, but this can't be right since I can't access my modem via its IP address when the problem happens. Sometimes just waiting a while fixes it, sometimes not. What will always fix it is turning AirPort off and then back on (i.e. reconnecting to my modem) but that's just plain annoying.
I know for sure it's a Leopard problem since when I boot into Windows, I don't experience the problem at all.
Anyways, I know a lot of people have been having AirPort issues on Leopard so this topic probably won't help me much but I had to just get it out of my system. Hopefully an update will come along that actually fixes the problem.

I'm still at work so I'll try and see what I can do, but I don't think it's the 10.5.5 kext specifically that does the trick. I used this one because my wifi was broken under both 10.5.6 and 10.5.7. If your computer worked ok with any of those two, I don't think you need to go back as far as .5. Just use the kext from whatever OS worked.
Using a Time Machine backup is easy, because you just have to select the file in your backup and click "restore" ( and reboot afterwards of course). The file is located in /System/Library/Extensions. If you don't have a backup, you should use a software called Pacifist (it's a shareware, with a trial version), which enables you to "open" and search for files inside an installer package (.pkg files) or an installer disk image. Just download the combo updater for whichever OS upgrade you need (from the apple website), open it with Pacifist, and look for the kext in /System/Library/Extensions (same as before). I think there's already an install feature in Pacifist for the file you extract (by the way, "kext" stands for "kernel extension" and as far as I understand it is basically the driver for whatever piece of equipment it's related to), otherwise you can use a freeware called kexthelper b7 to install it. Just make sure you have a back-up of your data and of the "correct" kext for 10.5.8 in case anything goes wrong (once again, while I'm right now typing from my newly-reconnected-to-wifi-when-on-battery-power macbook, I don't think messing with system files is a recommended procedure....). Also, kexthelper will only work from an admin account, and requires identification (I guess it's the same with Pacifist, I never tried to install anything with it).
Credits for this method should go to users Kuro-to and mach.wolf from this thread :

  • Airport doesn't work after RAM install

I upgraded RAM on my Mac Mini. Followed directions and all is good. Mini with new RAM is running great; however now, my Airport doesn't see my or any neighborhood networks. Prior to the install this was all working fine.
I can' figure out the problem. Any suggestions on what to do?

Excellent! That was it. Thank you.
And notes from a novice: For those looking to upgrade RAM in the Mac mini (Intel) there are 3 things to note when pulling out the internal frame: 1. The little black (thermostat fan) cable up front. You must unhook but if you forget to reconnect the fan runs all the time. Not good; 2. The gold (audio) band in the back. This too came off very easily. Very small (plastic) clamp that was tedioius to set back. Lift internal frame and turn like a book page; and 3. the airport cable. There are 2 small circular (beige color) ports. Use the MAIN (it's in tiny print) near the back.

  • AirPort doesn't work after Leopard install

I have an iMac 20" 2GHz Core 2 Duo and my AirPort doesn't work. I reset my PRAM, erased the hard drive and installed a clean copy of Leopard after picking it up from the Retail store. I had exactly the same problem with 9A559 and the seed update and I ASSUMED it would be fixed by the time the final release is out. It doesn't detect any networks, even if i move the access point very close to the computer. I tried disabling all security on the access point. Tried changing channels. Tried resetting the access point to defaults and reconfiguring from scratch. Tried manually putting the SSID in on the iMac but none of it worked. The access point is a Linksys WAG54G with the latest firmware. If anyone can help me, please do because the AirPort is the ONLY way this computer can access the internet.

    Just to clarify my situation:
    Erase and install of Leopard

  • AirPort doesn't see my new wireless router

I have a new router, and it works perfectly well via Ethernet, but it also has a wireless aerial, so I wanted to use it wireless, but Airport doesn't see any WLAN (AirPort IS active). What should I do? Any idea?
    Thanks
    Silvia

The router does broadcast the network name.
My Airport card is AirPort Extreme, universal, version 405.1 (3.90.34.0.p18), and the router is 802.11g 54Mbps
It's an EU Powerbook and an EU router.
I have gone to the router's setup page but I really don't know what to do. There is an auto-setup function for the wireless but it didn't work. I didn't see anything about the wireless being allowed to join the network or not.

  • Airport doesn´t connect automatically to Network with Zyxel

I am the proud owner of a new iMac Intel core duo 2,83Ghz since last wendsday. When I start the computer, Airport doesn´t connect automatically to my Home Network!! I checked all the settings - even them on the Router - severell times!! I use a Zyxell P-335WT Router. Fact is that allready had a Intel core duo based iMac. The automatically connection worked without any problem!!
Yesterday i phoned 1,5 hours with apple support - they couldn´t find the problem.
Has anybody an idea?? Last option is to put a new firmware on the router, and make new settings.

Same thing here. I have a belkin f5d7230 router. Wirelessly, my pc connects and stays connected, my old G4 with a reaktek wireless card connects and stays connected, and my new macbook pro connects and stays connected.
On my new iMac (purchased 3 weeks ago) airport extreme connects at start up and stays connected until the computer goes in a low power state or the screen saver goes on. then the connection drops. I have to click the little wireless "fan" graphic in the bar and select my network to connect again. This is CLEARLY an issue with this computer PERIOD. Apple needs to fix it one way or another preferably with a firmware update or something... I'm not interested in dragging this down to the apple store to have it sit there for a week.

  • Airport doesn't automatically connect to my preferred network

I had my hard drive replaced and ever since my airport doesn't automatically connect to my wifi network. I have specified my network as my preferred network in my system preferences.
I need to re-connect to the network manually (ie: I need to select my network form the drop down list) each time I wake my computer up from sleep mode.
How do I have my airport automatically connect??

Go to System Preferences then select the Network icon.
Select the airport adaptor then click advanced
the first tab "Airport" has all your recent SSID's listed.
Select the desired network and drag it to the top of the list and check the " Remember Networks this computers has joined."
Apart from that the next best thing would be to removed all the networks from the list and add that network you wish to join to verify its configuration

  • PS Start 3 doesn't think I am on line!?!?!!?

Thanks to all of you who helped me get PS Album Starter Edition unlocked.
It still has the problem that it doesn't think I am online.
The Unread Message(s) notification box in the upper right hand corner says I am not connected to the internet.
In the HELP Menu, Edition 3.0 Help works (that is how I got here).
    Online Support works.
Check for updates says no connection to the Internet is available.
Upgrade to Elements works (although I didn't try the upgrade).
    Elements Online works.
    Adobe Online works.
I have tried it with Norton Security turned off or on, but it doesn't make a difference.
What is different? How do I fix it?

    Bob,
I tried to access the address (URL) that you suggested and got nothing except a line saying "...perhaps there is a form..."
I have this problem with Adobe Album Starter 3.0 and I basically get the same message about "internet connection."
If anyone finds a solution, PLEASE post instructions.
I can't get any information from Adobe.

(PS I have Photoshop Elements 4.0 and basically get a different approach to the "Online Photo Service" (Kodakgallery.com) but still no photo book created and purchased through Adobe software. I had been using Kodak's Ofoto but it is virtually impossible to arange photographs at that site. I've ordered 6 photo albums and the quality is good-excellent but with Adobe I can't get my photos to the site.)

  • My iMac doesn't think I have Safari installed

I'm currently running Mac OS X Version 10.9.5.  All my software components are up to date.  Current Safari version is: 7.1.
In a couple of cases (see below), I believe that Mac OS X doesn't think that I have Safari installed or the latest version of Safari installed.
    Case 1:
When I go to WWDC online videos (any recent year, but certainly the latest: https://developer.apple.com/videos/wwdc/2014/) and try to play a video I get this:
    System Requirements
To watch the streaming version of this video, use the latest version of Safari on a Mac running OS X Lion or later. Alternatively, you can watch this video in the WWDC app or download the video when available.
    Case 2:
Within Safari under Preference - Extensions, I click on the "Get Extensions" button on the button right and it brings me to a web page that advertises extensions but instead of offering me to download an extension, the page instead suggests for me to download Safari 6, i.e.
You need Safari 6 to install and use Safari Extensions. Download now.
Despite this, Safari has been working normally for years now but believe my machine is in a state where it isn't completely happy.

    Hi ..
Might be a cookies, cache, or extensions issue ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
    Click:   Remove All Website Data
    Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, troubleshoot Safari extensions.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.

  • The airport only finds other networks than the home network I have used before.  Doesn' help to try to manually add/find this network, it simply doesn't come up.  All other networks in the neighborhood are found though. Doesn't help to reboot either

The airport only finds other networks.  Not the home network which I have used before.
It doesn't help to search for new networks, try to manually search or add the network.  Doesn't
help to turn off/on the airport or even the mac.  Doesn't help to reboot the home network - which is
found and connected on the iPhone and iPad. (and network speed is good enough for many devices).
The network just doesn't come up on the list of available networks.
No chance to update software, since got no internet.

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

  • DHCP & self-assigned IP problem-Airport doesn't work

I'm not really a technical type, but I'm pretty quick to pick things up and several weeks of trying to deal with this issue has made me pretty knowledgeable about things related to it specifically.
    Background:
I have a month-old Macbook Pro that runs Snow Leopard and is up to date on all its software stuff. On our home network we have another pretty new Macbook Pro running 10.5.9 and a fairly old Macbook also running 10.5.9.
We have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Our network uses a 40-bit Hex WEP password.
    Problem(s):
When I try to connect to our wireless network, Network preferences tells me that it cannot connect because of a self-assigned IP address. Sure enough, the IP address DHCP comes up with is of the 64.XX.XX.XX variety. Google's revealed that this is a common problem for all recent versions of OSX, back to at least Tiger.
The "subnet mask" it comes up with is 255.255.0.0, which is different from the settings on our other (working) computers, which is 255.255.255.0. I'm not sure what this means, or whether it's significant. Renewing the DHCP lease either comes up with the same 64.XX.XX.XX type or, sometimes, it comes up with no IP settings at all. The most frustrating thing about this is that if I chose "DHCP with manual address" and type in any in our set that I've confirmed isn't in use and hit "apply", as soon as I go back to the panel it has reverted to the 64.XX.XX.XX type.
I've also tried manually entering the router/subnet mask/IP data, as well as the DNS numbers, and that leads to the Network Settings connectivity dot thing being green, but the internet still doesn't work. In those cases, diagnostics claims that everything is fine up to and including the ISP, but that it's unable to connect to the server and internet.
Of note: some people with a similar problem have talked about networks with this problem working intermittently, but mine seems to be consistently broken.
Initially I was able to avoid fixing the problem by using our neighbors' unsecured wireless network, which is sort of awful, I know, but at least it kept me from having to deal with this for a while. Today it started to do the same thing to that network. Both networks continue to work on our Macbook and other Macbook Pro, which is why I don't think that it's a router problem.
I've been able to connect to our other computers through computer-to-computer networks—going through our main shared network (and thus the wireless router) doesn't seem to work—which I think shows that the Airport card/hardware itself is intact (?). I did try connecting to the internet through the "internet sharing" option on our Macbook, but that had the exact same problems.
Another thing that may or may not be relevant, but is equally infuriating:
I've also noticed that my Macbook Pro has more trouble staying connected to a network than our Macbook—even when it was working, it disconnected/timed out extremely often, which is something our Macbook never does, even from the same location. When I try to connect to a network it spends a very long time displaying the "searching for network" animation in the menu bar icon, sometimes after the Network Preferences pane believes that it's connected, and sometimes even after I hit the button to turn Airport off. It's also started refusing to connect to any networks at all, on occasion, which is especially evident in the process of the diagnostics box thingy, because there it actually tells me it's unable to connect rather than just playing the searching animation for ages.
Here are some other things that I've tried:
    setting up a new 'location'
    restarting the computer
    deleting the airport preferences file
    restarting in safe mode
    restarting open firmware
confirming that the firewall allows all incoming thingies
    resetting the router
making sure the keychain password allows all applications to access it
connecting to the internet through a computer-to-computer network from another machine
Because the situation has deteriorated over time, I'd also like to know whether people think that it's two problems (the type of router then later the airport hardware(?)/software(?) itself, perhaps) or just one. Since I've tried basically everything besides switching out our router, I'm kind of inclined to blame it on that, especially because one of the more plausible explanations for this problem that I've heard is a time-out error due to Airport expecting a faster response than it's able to get from older routers; however, the fact that other networks haven't been working means that it's not likely to be just the router. If it's just one problem, which is the simpler explanation, then I guess there's something properly wrong with my computer's software, in which case I guess I'll take it to the Apple Store. :/
I'm in love with my computer otherwise, and I'll admit that I spent a good twenty minutes sobbing out of frustration over this. Any help would be immensely appreciated.

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    Try Changing the Airport Channel
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.

  • AirPort doesn't have a Valid IP Address after Moving

After moving to a new apartment, I've been having a lot of trouble with my AirPort.
At first, only my computer was able to connect, even though I kept getting warnings that it didn't have a valid IP address.  No other devises, including other computers, were able to connect.  Throughout this entire time, the airport light blinked yellow.  Then, all of a suddent, the airport light went solid green, and now I can't even connect wirelessly.  I've had a tech savy friend look at it, and I also tried a hard reset.  Nothing works.
My building provides us with internet, including the Motorola modum (SBV5330 SURFboard) in my room.  Under networks, it says my SirPort is connected and has the IP address of 10.0.1.3.
    Can somebody help me?

    jschenmd wrote:

So your ISP has chosen to throw you into the "worst case" situation I mentioned above.  I don't know why ISPs do that.  If nothing else, it increases their support costs.
He also convinced me to keep the linksys router stating that it was still an excellent device and unmatched in quality.  So, I guess I won't be changing to Airport! Any disagreement or benefit of the Airport over a linksys broadband router model wrt54gl v1.1 other than my being a fan of Apple products?
I have no experience with Linksys equipment, but I suspect that it's no better or worse than most.  I also suspect that the support people at your ISP are guilty of recommending only what they know.
If you already have that AirPort Extreme base station, I'd tell those people to stop jerking you around and update their configuration to let you use it.

  • Wired to laptop works, wired to Airport doesn't

    Hello
I've been having a fair bit of trouble lately with my Airport Express and I can't work it out. I have a router connected to cable Internet. If I plug an Ethernet cable into the wired router to my laptop I can get the Internet. However, if I plug the same cable into my Airport Express it doesn't see it. I get the flashing amber light and nothing happens.
This hasn't always been the case, up until last week everything had been fine for as long as I can remember.
At first I thought it was my supplier until I realised if I plugged in direct to my laptop it worked ok. So then I thought maybe it's my Airport Express, after a factory reset I have the same issue. And I even have the same issue with a completely different Airport Express.
I just can't work it out. My supplier says if the wire works fine to my laptop then it must be my wireless router, but if both aren't working I seriously doubt that - what are the odds with that?
I'm really confused and my web supplier is no help, they say replace the wireless, but I don't want to spend more money if so far 2 routers have the exact same problem.
Anyone had this? Any help would be really really welcomed.
    Thanks in advance.
    Dom

When you plug the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) into the existing router, you have (by default) two routers in your network configuration. Typically, you would want to reconfigure the second or downstream router as a bridge. When you reset the AX, it defaults to being a wireless router ... so you would need to use the AirPort Utility to reconfigure it as a bridge. (ref: AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Internet > Internet Connection > Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode))

  • AIRPORT doesn't connect at startup/after sleep

    Hi All,
I recently had to reconfigure my Airport Express - that worked fine but now my PowerBook doesn't automatically connect to my selected network, either after sleep or at startup. It connects fine manually, but never automatically.
The connection also doesn't stick when switching between users - it used to.
I saw a post here about deleting the keychain entry - I tried that but it didn't work.
I've tried multiple times to re-add the network into the "join this network" area of network prefs, but it won't connect automatically. Also tried copying & renaming the location but NG.
It worked beautifully before and I keep thinking there must be something I'm missing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    R.Crooke

Hi R.Crooke, and a warm welcome to the forums!
You've done a ggod amount of the thungs that can work so far, but try this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.networkConnect.<12 digit number>.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
These last two will need the originals Trashed since moving them actually just copies them to the desktop.
    Reboot. Setup again.

  • Airport doesn't get an IP from wifi AP

I have a wifi network in my office, based on D-Link DWL-2100AP (latest firmware). It is setup to Static IP Pool mode, so that when client signs in he recieves from AP an IP-address assigned to clints MAC-address. The clients are set up to recieve network configuration via DHCP. So that every client have the same IP every time and everything could be easily monitored and billed.
The problem is with to Mac-clients, which are sign-in very slowly. The Airport says that it doesn't get DHCP info and self-assign the IP, so the www is not accessible. It gets the info after some time (5-30 minutes), but i didn't find any method to force the renewal of dhcp sign-in (i've tried airport on/off, computer reboot) except the reboot of AP, after that MBP get the IP in most cases.
So that, every morning i'm coming to my office and waiting half an hour or rebooting the AP to get to the internet. The same with other Mac client (13" Macbook - 2008). But nothing similar never happends with Windows-based clients in out network, as soon as portable opened - it is connected. But at the same time nothing similar happend to my MBPro at home - it connects to AP instantly.
I cannot stricktly identify whether the problen is with airport driver, or this exact access point, or exact bundle mac+DWL2100. I've tried to shorten lease time on AP, but it doesn't help.
Hope someone will advise any solution or, at least, any trick to get IP without rebooting AP.
    Thanx in advance,
    Art

I would lean toward a problem with your access point settings. I have a setup close to this with DHCP reserved reservations into a static pool and I have pretty instant IP distribution. So it isn't a problem with OS X. Have you tried creating a new dedicated network location in sys prefs? Don't think that should make a difference but it is how I connect.
