Airport Utilities doesn't detect Time Capsule

I plugged in my Time Capsule a while ago, but have been too busy to figure out why it wasn't connecting until now.
The light fashes amber constantly and we've tried connecting with an ethernet cord, and it still won't detect the time capsule.
Any ideas or a faulty machine?

What are you plugging it into??
Make sure the ethernet is set to auto IP .. if it still fails to pick up and address, make sure you plug into the LAN port of the TC not WAN. Try another ethernet cable. Make sure the connectivity leds go on, both the TC and the computer it is connected to.. ie you should see green .. lots of green.
If no go, hold in the reset button until the led flashes rapidly and the TC will reset to defaults and see if it now works.. no go, then it could be faulty. Take it to an apple store genius or local supplier and see if they can test it.

  • Airport utility fails to detect time capsule

I'm sitting right beside the thing, so I know it isn't a distance problem. It's blinking orange, and cannot be found via search.

If AirPort Utility cannot "find" your Time Capsule after a few tries, (Did you power down both your computer and the Time Capsule and then power them back up?), your next option is to reset the Time Capsule back to factory default settings.
    Power down the Time Capsule
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug the power back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
Reconfigure your Time Capsule. You can use the same name, password, etc as before if you wish.
The factory default reset will not harm or affect your existing backups

  • Windows 7 airport utility will not detect time capsule

Hi, I have a current generation time capsule and I am having problems connecting to my Windows 7 home premium PC. The time capsule connects and works perfectly using my Macbook. My set up is this: DSL router conected to the time capsule via ethernet cable. I can get the time capsule to pick up wireless and connect to my PC, but upon opening the airport utility it will not detect the time capsule at all. I have trolled the internet for about 3 hours trynig various things, none of which have worked. Has anyone had this issue and resolved it?

The airport utility has nothing whatever to do with disk access.
It helps having bonjour available in the computer. And the utility should be able to bring up TC setup.. although as noted.. apple have already bypassed windows as it is too old. The new TC requires v6 utility.. the version for windows is 5.
None of that is relevant to opening the TC hard disk.
-If this is not the case, can you please advise on how to access the storage on a windows 7 PC
Did you follow the instructions from my previous post.
Open your windows explorer and type into the address bar,
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
Where you replace TCname with the actual name of the TC.. your nice new short SMB compatible name.
Or use the IP address of the LAN on the TC.. by default 10.0.1.1
If you did this and it failed, you need to ping the TC by name and by IP address from command window..
Does the TC respond to pings??
If so it should be able to open the TC disk.. but you will probably have to use the IP address not the name which is likely illegal.
I also mentioned the issue of SMB names..
Please tell me what is the name of your TC as you set it up in the Mac..
    Does it look like this.
    Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.
If so it is too long.. it has spaces and it has an illegal character.. from windows the name should be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Please reset the TC to factory and start again.. you can use the airport utility in the Mac.
Do not use apple suggested names.. which are WRONG.
    Use names like TCgen5
    And for wireless TCwifi
Then try again with the windows.
If you continue to have issues, try using ethernet to the computer from the TC instead of wireless.
Make sure ipv6 is on and set to link-local or the PC equivalent of that.. I will need to look that up.

  • Airport Utility won't detect Time Capsule

I have two airport expresses that broadcast my wireless network. I recently bought a 500 GB TC, and installed the included software. I took the ethernet cable from my Airport Express and plugged it into the correct port on the TC. It flashes amber. When I open Airport Utility, it can only detect my two airport expresses, not my TC. The instructions make it seems like it should just pop up when Utility scans for wireless devices. How do I get my TC to appear on the list so that I can set it up via Airport Utility?
    Thanks

In order to help AirPort Utility find the Time Capsule, connect an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule directly to your computer.
Restart the Time Capsule if needed.
Once you have Time Capsule configured correctly, you can reconnect the other devices as necessary.

  • HT1941 trying to connect time  apsule to macbook air with the ethernet cable in the WAN port the airport utility doesn't detect it

trying to connect time  capsule to macbook air with the ethernet cable in the WAN port but the airport utility doesn't detect it but when i put it in the LAN one it does but it doesn't let me configure
    any ideas?

Isn't it fun trying to do things without an ethernet cable direct to the computer.. Apple sell a usb to ethernet adapter cable fairly cheap.. makes life a lot easier having something to do hard connections.. or as hard as usb can manage.
Since you have to access the TC by wireless .. press and hold the reset button on the TC for about 10sec until front led flashes rapidly.. don't worry about the ethernet cable.. leave it disconnected.
Now click on the airport symbol and join another network. The TC should revert to its home name.. which will be a combo of Time Capsule and its MAC address. There is no wireless security and you can do the setup.

  • Cannot detect time capsule

My computer can no longer detect my time capsule despite factory reset and reboot of computer Neither in finder or airport utility. Is my time capsule malfunctioning?

Continuous amber is bad.. basically means a dead hard disk and the TC cannot boot.
If it is under warranty or applecare return to Apple for replacement.
Otherwise you can open it and remove the hard drive.. Replace the drive or just run the TC without..

How can I set up mhy Airport Express to extend my Time Capsule wifi wirelessly
Assuming that you have the model A1264 or A1392 version of the Express, it must be located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule to be able to extend it correctly.
A good general location would be a point that is about half way between the Time Capsule and other area that needs more wireless coverage.
You will use AirPort Utility on your computer to configure the Express. An iPhone or iPad could be used as well.
We can provide more help....if you need it....but we'll need to know what version of AirPort Utility that you are using on your computer....or whether you want to use an iPhone or iPad to setup the Express.

  • Using Airport Express to Extend a Time Capsule Network: Results (*Long*)

Thought I would share my recent (2 hours ago) experience with setting up an Airport Express to Extend a Time Capsule 802.11N 5Ghz Network. Basically I just followed the directions in the Apple Airport Utility, using the "Extend a Wireless Network" setting:
Time Capsule (TC) 802.11N 5Ghz: In computer room
Linksys (LNK) 802.11g configured as dual network router with TC, also in computer room.
Airport Express (AE): In living room, about 50' away, several old plaster walls in between.
    According to iStumblr:
    1) I get an 80% signal from my TC when my MacBook is practically sitting on top of it.
    2) I get an 88% signal from my Linksys 802.11g sitting next to the TC
    3) I get 35% signal from my TC when my MacBook is in the living room. This is NOT enough signal, for some reason, to maintain a decent internet connection.
    4) I get a 46% signal from my LNK from the same location. This IS enough signal to connect to the network.
    5) With the AE configured as "Extend a Wireless Network" to the TC, and placed in the living room (again, about 50' from the TC base station), I get a 55% signal from the AE (which shows up as the same name as the TC network, for obvious reasons) Again, enough signal to connect to the network.
I did some internet speed tests using SpeedTest (take these with a grain of salt, of course)
    1) From computer room over TC: 18Mb/s~22Mb/s average over 2 days of testing
    2) From computer room over LNK: 18Mb/s~22mb/s average over 2 days of testing
    3) From living room over AE(extended network from TC): 5~7Mb/s average in the last 2 hours
    4) From living room over LNK: 12~14Mb/s average over 2 days of testing
    Preliminary conclusions:
    1) Setting up an extended network is pretty straightforward, and works without issue.
    2) My 802.11g network with my old Linksys is far superior than my new extended 802.11N 5Ghz network, at least for internet connection speed.
    3) I feel a bit irritated buying this AE now to extend my 802.11N network, if its not going to give me any advantages over my ancient 802.11g network
    4) File transfers may still be better over the 802.11N-I will test that out at some point.
    5) I have not tried WDS instead of "Extend a Wireless Network"-not sure what the benefits would be.
    Computer Notes:
    MacBook Aluminum-MB(Al) 2.0 C2D (802.11n)
finds 8 wireless networks in my neighborhood (3 of them are mine)
    MacBook White-MB(Wh) 1.83 CD (802.11g only)
finds 10 wireless networks in my neighborhood (3 of them are mine)
Oddly, the signal strength of my networks isn't that different between the two computers-between 2% and 5%, even though it can't see as many networks. The 2 networks the MB(Wh) CAN see are at around 21% and 25% signal-not sure why the MB(Al) can't see them at all.

Your biggest mistake is confusing signal strength with signal quality. The signal indicator indicates strength and nothing else. You need to be using iStumblr to look at SNR (Signal to noise ratio).

I'm trying to restart Time Machine, but Time Machine doesn't show Time Capsule as a backup option even though I'm connected to it wirelessly on our network. I was successfully backing up to my Time Capsule until I changed its name. Any ideas on how to fix this.

Sounds like the drive is dead.
Take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location.

  • Utility doesn't find time capsule

I had to create a new network and also upgraded to Lion.  At some point, time machine stopped backing up my data.  Now I cannot get Airport Utility to even find the capsule.  What do I do to fix this?

The first step would be to temporarily connect an Ethernet cable from your Mac to one of the LAN <-> port son the Time Capsule to see if AirPort Utility can "see" the Time Capsule that way.
If that does not work, your next option is to perform a Factory Default Reset and then reconfigure the Time Capsule again. This will not affect your existing backups.

If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?

Erasing the Time Capsule's internal HDD, via the AirPort Utility, will NOT affect the TC's configuration settings. However, if your intent is to completely remove these settings as well, you will want to perform a "factory default" reset on the TC to do so.
If you first export the configuration, you can always import it back in after the reset to get you back up and running quickly.

  • Airport Express Model A1088 with Time Capsule Model A1254 configuration problems.

I have a Time Capsule Model A1254 and an Airport Express Model A1264. I run OSX 10.7.4. When I try to configure an older Airport Express Model A1088 the Time capsule does not recognise the older Airport Express after I configure it using Airport Utility version 5.6.
    Can anyone help please.

What do you mean "the Time Capsule does not recognize the older AirPort Express"?
Sounds like the AirPort Express needs to be reset and reconfigured.

  • Airport utility 6.1 no longer detects time capsule

After updating to the latest airport utility version 6.1, by time capsule (2nd gen) and my airport express (1st gen) are no longer found in the interface.  The following message is displayed in the utility bottom section "No configured Airport base stations have been found.  Airport Utility will continue searching."  I have Lion 10.7.4 installed and both devices have 7.6.1 firmware.  Any idea/help?

I corrected the problem by simple turning off the wiress off/on of the laptop the airport utility I was having the issue.  I am not quite sure why the signal got "corrupted", but that did the trick.

  • Time Machine unable to auto-detect Time Capsule as Backup Disk

    Hey all!
I just got my new 500GB Time Capsule today. I'm able to connect to my wireless network via TC but am unable to back up any of my computers (2 MacBooks, 1 iMac) through Time Machine onto TC. In fact, Time Machine doesn't even auto-detect my TC. I've just updated all my software. I haven't checked if my MacBooks are able to print wirelessly via TC yet.
    Anyone able to help?
Picture of what I see when I open my Time Machine preferences:
    http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l319/chuyun-/Picture1.png

File Sharing was already enabled when I went to AirPort Utility to check, and the Time Capsule disk wasn't visible under Shared. Thanks so much anyway skorpien, your help was much appreciated (:
I called up Apple Support and it's all fixed now, including the printer (:
So just in case anyone ever encounters the same problem as me, here's what the friendly guy said over the phone:
    1. Go to System Preferences (Apple Logo/System Preferences)
    2. Click on Time Machine and switch it on, a window prompting you to choose a Backup disk should appear.
    3. If your Time Capsule isn't listed, click on "Set Up Time Capsule". (If that option isn't available, update your software before trying again)
    4. The AirPort Utility window should appear with your Time Capsule listed on the left. Click on your Time Capsule, and then on "Continue".
    5. Enter your Time Capsule Password, verify it, and then click on Continue" again.
    6. If you already have a wireless network (like me), click on the first option, then continue.
    7. If your wireless network requires your router to be connected to the phone line, choose Option 3 "I want to connect Time Capsule to my network using Ethernet to extend my current network or create a second network".
    8. A list of previously used networks will appear. Choose the one you would like to extend (i.e. the wireless network you use at home if your Time Capsule is for home use).
    9. (Because I'm currently backing-up my data, I'm unable to give exact instructions from that step onwards as it'll disconnect my back-up. Sorry!)
Finish up the last few steps (they're quite self-explanatory), and go back to your Time Machine preferences (Apple logo/System Preferences/Time Machine)
    10. Switch the Time Machine on again, the window should appear again with your Time Capsule listed.
    11. Click on your Time Capsule and then on "Use for Backup"
    12. Your Backup starts (:
As for printing, once you've done the above steps...
    1. Go to Airport Utility (Applications/Utilities/Airport Utility)
    2. Double click on your Time Capsule, then click on Printers.
    3. If your printer is switched on and connected to your Time Capsule, it should be detected automatically.
    4. Click Update and you're done! (Do the same for all other computers you want to print wirelessly with)
