Airport Utility 5.2 and 5.2.1 cannot read /edit configuration of AEBS 7.2.1

*THE PROBLEM ON my Mac:*
I am using an ethernet connection directly to a brand new AEBS from:
iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, 2BG RAM
X 10.4.10
airport turned off
Airport Utility detects the base station but cannot read the configuration to edit and setup. And displays the following error:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-5)"
The AEBS does assign any machine connected via ethernet an IP address to allow internet access.
*THE PROBLEM ON WINDOWS:*
I have the nearly the same problem when using my Windows XP pro laptop connected via ethernet using Airport Utility for Windows ver 5.2 and 5.2.1
Airport Utility detects the base station, but when attempting to access the configuration, the Error message is practically the same with a different error code:
"An error occurred while trying to access the base station. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6742
*STEPS ATTEMPTED TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM (w/out success):*
I have read the posts that say to turn off IPv6 on Mac, did that but with no success.
Others did a simple hard reset on the AEBS, I tried that too.
I've tried connecting to the AEBS directly with all other network devices (modem, other routers, etc) disconnected and turned off just incase there was some compatibly issue... no work. I even tried all the different ports.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Can I walk into a Apple retail store and ask them to check the the AEBS to see if they can access the configuration?
Just to be fair...
(For people who have only read this post, turning off the IPv6 worked for some people, and just doing a hard reset for others).

I finally figured it out. I had exactly the same problem when Airport Utility detected the base station but could not read the configuration to edit and setup, displaying the following error:
"An error occurred while reading the configuration.
Please make sure your AirPort base station is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-5)"
I tried everything (Unfortuantely it is impossible to consult to an Apple genius around here). Even the hard reset didn't work. That is what I did: I pulled off the power cord, and put it back again WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE RESET BUTTON with a pin. Only after that the amber light went on twinkling, and I could access it via the Airport utility. All the settings were reset so I just had to reconfigure it. Hope it works for you too.

  • How do I get my macmini running Mountain Lion to see my Canon USB printer connected to my Airport Extreme? I have a macbook pro running leopard and that works fine. The versions of airport utility are different and I can't even see the printer from new 1

I am having trouble seeing my usb printer from my second gen airport extreme using the newest version of airport utility under Mountain Lion. UGH! And while I can see and network to my Canon IP5000 from my macbook pro running leopard, I can't from my new macmini running Mountain Lion. Any help would be appreciated in configuring my macmini so it can see the Canon IP5000 on the airport extreme. Don't want to "share" the printer from the laptop because that would be a cludge. Thanks ahead

I solved this one based on another post. Turned out I needed the snow leopard IP5000 driver. I had just copied over the leopard driver (I had saved my .dmg file) and installed that but it didn't work. So I downloaded the latest driver which turned out to be for snow leopard and I am guessing since it is 64bit that is why it worked and the leopard driver didn't. Anyway, I also had to hook the printer up via usb to the mac mini to get it to work locally before the O/S would see it over Bonjour via the airport extreme.

  • Airport Utility 6.0 and AppleTV :)

The new airport utility 6.0 shows my Apple TV2 as Apple-TV-3
    Jerry

First to try to access the older 802.11g AirPort Express Base Station (AX) temporarily connect it with your computer using an Ethernet cable. Then make the required configuration changes and save them via the AirPort Utility. Finally, you can then disconnect the Ethernet cable and place the AX at the desired location.
The other thing to take into consideration. If your goal is to provide a network/Internet connection to the TV Stereo, via an Ethernet connection, the AX would need to be configured in a WDS ... and you would only be able to set up this WDS if the other router providing the Wi-Fi network is another 802.11g or 802.11n AirPort base station.

  • Airport Utility on Mac and iPad can't see Airport Extreme or AEs

Airport Utility on my Mac can't see my Extreme base station or two extending AEs. I thought this might be because I've yet to upgrade my Mac software, so tried using Airport Utility on my iPad--same story. The Mac lists the Airports but with yellow ! warnings; the iPad just keeps searching. Yet the Internet is OK (and shows up with a green light) and I can connect to everything on the network.
Possibly unrelated, but our two Macs have each gotten the "IP address assigned to another device" message. Click Ok and it goes away and everything works, no rebooting or lease renewing needed.
It's weird. Not critical, as everything works, but worrisome. Ideas?

I had the same problem. My AirPort utility in Windows would not detect the AirPort Extreme until I was already connected to the internet. I have two routers in my house. When I connected to my other router and was connected to the internet via that, then my AirPort Extreme showed up in my AirPort.

  • Airport Utility on iMac with Jumbo Frames can't read Airport configuration

My 24" iMac is connected to a Netgear switch (GS608 rev2) that supports Ethernet jumbo frames. My GigE Airport Extreme base station is also connected to the Netgear switch and is acting as a gateway for my cable modem connection. Here's the rough wired layout:
    iMac--Netgear--Airport--Cable Modem
The iMac has jumbo frames enabled (MTU=9000) and can communicate fine to the Internet and other devices on my local LAN (including a Netgear NAS box also with Jumbo frames enabled).
Airport Utility on the iMac starts and discovers my 3 Airports (1 extreme + 2 express) but if I double click on one of them to configure it, the window says "Reading the AirPort Extreme configuration..." and hangs there never bringing up the setup screen. Printer jobs to the shared USB printer that worked before Jumbo Frames were enabled on the iMac are also failing. The same happens for the 2 Airport Express as well although I can still steam Airtunes music to them.
Any ideas what might be wrong ? Do the airports have problems negotiating with jumbo frame enabled Macs ?
My wireless MBA with std MTU can still communicate fine with the Airports.
    Thanks,
    E

None of Apple's Airports support jumbo frames.
The networking chip that Apple uses in the Airport Extreme has the capability to support jumbo frames, but it isn't an option that Apple has chosen to expose to the user. So you can't reliably use the Airports on a jumbo frame enabled subnet.
The likely reason the Internet is still working is that, unless your uploading, it's unlikely the iMac sent a packet in excess of 1500 bytes to the Airport. The Airport is always sending 1500 byte packets which your iMac wold receive fine regardless of what the MTU was set (well, unless it was set below 1500).
Some people do report success but I would be wary of their results, they may not have down/upped the interface so the MTU may have been listed as changed, but not yet actually changed to the larger MTU. No-one has actually posted a tcpdump -e capture showing an Airport actually sending/receiving packets in excess of 1500 bytes.

  • Superdrive can read and burn dvds but CANNOT read or burn CDs??

My DVR-107D can read and burn DVD's, but all of a sudden it cannot even read or mount a cd. It also cannot burn CD's. I've run 2 cleaning discs, and even manually cleaned the lens. I feel it may be a software issue at this point... Any ideas?? Finder is set to open CDs and DVDs to the desktop.

    Hi
There are two lenses in the drive. It is possible for one to fail while the other still functions. I manually cleaning the lenses made no difference, it is quite possible that aspect of the drive is dead.
You may want to try from a different admin User account (and with a third party app such as Toast, in addition to Finder, iTunes, iPhoto, Disc Utility)

why can i not easily get a number for Adobe, i am getting so frustrated

"I have" means you have done Help / Updates (and maybe it didn't work) or that you have updated to LR 5.7.1?
What version of LR are you running?  You can determine this via Help / About Adobe Photoshop Lightroom xx.xx.xx.xx.
You need a version of LR that was released after the 7D2 came out and if you don't then it won't work.
If you aren't running LR 5.7.1 and are using the serial-number-activated version of LR, you can download it from here:

What is Airport Utility and why do I need to access Airport witeless devices in order to backup my iMac using Time Machine...HELP!!! PLEASE??

AirPort Utility is required to configure an Apple AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule.
Time Machine can use a Time Capsule or a locally connected volume. You only need to use AirPort Utility if you are using a Time Capsule.

  • Issue setting up new Airport Express on OS 10.8 and Airport Utility 6

My network is a lastest model Airport Extreme and computers running 10.8 Mountain Lion. I needed to extend my wireless network so I purchased the newer model Airport Express.
Using Airport Utility 6, I followed the screen prompts to extend the network and get 99% complete (screen prompts find the network to extend, join the network, and then begin to apply configurations to the Airport Express). It is during this last stage the configuration of the Airport Express fails, the light starts blinking amber and I get an "unreckognized error" in Airport Utility. No further information. I tried soft reset and factory resets on the Airport Express several times with the same result.
I have another computer still running 10.7 Lion and Airport Utility 5.6 and after another reset, figured I'd give it a try. I was able to connect to the Airport Express, configure it to extend the network, save the configuration and the status light turned green on the first try.
Not sure what's going on with OS X 10.8 and Airport Utility 6 but maybe this will help someone else get their network up and running.

The first AirPort Express was introduced only nine years ago, not thirteen, but nevertheless, that's pretty old. Mountain Lion has features that will not work with an Express that old.
Nevertheless, it remains a perfectly functional device and still does everything it ever did. Use the technique described in this thread: I can't install airport utility 5.6

  • I have a Time Capsule on which I back up 2 MacBooks and on my wife's machine she keeps having Airport Utility popping up all the time with a yellow button flashing on the left and a Red button on the right side with a "1" in the middle of it.

I have a Time Capsule on which I back up 2 MacBooks and on my wife's machine she keeps having Airport Utility popping up all the time with a yellow button flashing on the left and a Red button on the right side with a "1" in the middle of it. Can any one tell me what is wrong. I read where when the yellow light was flashing there was a problem, but I am a novice at this and have no idea where to turn. It seems to be backing up on a regular basis.

    On the Mac......
Open up Macintosh HD > Applicatons > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the Time Capsule icon, then click Edit in the small window that appears
Click the Network tab at the top of the next window
Change the setting for Router Mode from the current DHCP and NAT to read Off (Bridge Mode), then click Update at the lower right of the window, and wait a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    Then.....very important
Power off the Time Capsule and your Arris modem/router for a few minutes
Start up the Arris first, and let it run a few minutes by itself
Start up the Time Capsule next the same way
Your network will now be correct, and your printing capabilities will improve.
If Time Machine backups do not occur now, post back and we will tackle that next.

  • New to Time Capsule and Airport Utility App not current...

I just received a Time Capsule for Christmas with the main purpose being to back up photos from my Mac and iPhone. When trying to install the Time Capsule I get this message:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this AirPort wireless device and might improperly configure the device if you continue to use it. Check www.apple.com/support/airport for the latest version of AirPort Utility."
My Airport Utility app is version is 5.6.1
I've looked for a more recent update but it doesn't appear there is one.
Is there a more recent update? Do I need it to proceed?

You must use a Mac with Lion at least, and the latest v6 airport utility available for it.. You cannot use Snow Leopard. You cannot use windows.
The alternative is to use iOS version of the utility which you can download to iphone ipad.

  • Airport Utility and AEBS DB firmware updates question

I have an AEBS DB2 version set up with a MBP Airport Utility which came from the install cd of the AEBS, which was Airport Utility 5.5 and the AEBS DB2 had firmware 7.5. I did update to 5.5.1 and 7.5.1, respectively and all is fine. However, I have another MBP that is just set up to use the wifi signal. I noticed that it also wanted to pull in the AU 5.5.1 update even thought I never installed the AU from the AEBS cd. I am wondering if 5.5.x, which could only be gotten on the cd, is now just the standard and it doesn't matter. Or, did the other MBP just know it was using a wifi AEBS and thus Apple set it up to find that newer update..after all, It never found a 5.5 before...it was just using whatever upto 10.6.2 had installed.

I noticed that it also wanted to pull in the AU 5.5.1 update even thought I never installed the AU from the AEBS cd. I am wondering if 5.5.x, which could only be gotten on the cd, is now just the standard and it doesn't matter.
Interestingly, when 5.5.1 became available via AU, it also showed up for Macs & PCs via a download from Apple Support - Downloads site as well ... and you're right, v5.5 is only available from the CD.
