Airport Utility 5.6.1 doesn't see my Airport Extreme

I'm good with the Ethernet connection for the internet, but Airport doesn't see my Airport Extreme.  It's connected to my IMac 10.6.8.   Have tried a reset with ballpoint pen, but nothing happens.  This all went crashing down the other evening with I suddenly had lost Internet on my MacBook Pro.  This ***** so bad.  Would it do me any good to call Apple support?

OS X 10.6.8 is Snow Leopard for which you need AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
There are no special techniques to download it. Just click on the link, then click the blue Download button, which will download and eventually deposit AirPort Utility 5.6.1 in your Downloads folder.
It looks like this:
Double-click it to extract the package installer. It looks like this:
Double-click that to open the installer:
Click Continue and follow the prompts, which will either install it in your Utilities folder or tell you a reason it cannot.
After you perform the "hard reset" and the Extreme's LED is blinking slowly, go to your Wi-Fi menu and see if you find a network called "Apple Network nnnnnn". Select it, then launch AirPort Utility.
The reason that everything is greyed out is that AirPort Utility cannot find any base stations to configure. If after doing all the above it still cannot, perform another "hard reset". If that does not work, perform a "factory defaults reset" as I explained above.
What happened at the Apple Store? Other than having a nice ballpoint pen with an Apple logo on it, they are not going to do anything more than you can do.
If you did not bring it there yet, bring your MacBook Pro along with you so that you can see for yourself how it ought to work.

  • AirPort Utility 6.3.2 doesn't see older AirPort Base Station

I have an old AirPort Base Station (2001 model, Dual Ethernet, "Snow", actually not "Graphite", though apparently that's the correct category here), which was previously configured with my MacBook Pro running MAC OS X 10.6.8. I've just started it up, with the DSL modem connected to it, and I'm able to connect to it (and get Internet) from my new MacBook Pro running 10.9.4 just fine. However, the latest AirPort Utility v.6.3.2 doesn't see it, says "No configured AirPort base stations have been found. AirPort Utility will continue searching." – although its window does show a green button next to the word Internet, showing (I assume) that there's an Internet connection. Does anybody know how to configure an old APBS like this from 10.9.4? AirPort Utility v.5.6.1 apparently can't be used with 10.9; is there a version that can, and will see this older AirPort Base Station?

Does anybody know how to configure an old APBS like this from 10.9.4?
Not in any way that Apple would support, or that we could discuss on this forum.
Not recommending that you try a solution from the Internet using an "unknown" author to "override" security settings on your Mac, but that would be the only way to possibly get AirPort Utility 5.6.1 to run on 10.9.4.

  • AP Utility 5.4.1 doesn't see my AirPort Express but iTunes 8.0.2.20 does

I have 2 AEs connected on a wired lan on Win XP. The new version of the AirPort Utility (5.4.1) can't find them but iTunes 8.0.2.20 does see them. I can also ping them using a net utility to find the IP addresses.
Is this a known problem? To which previous version of the AirPort Utility should I revert and where do I find it?

The Airport Express is quite old, i've had it for many years, not sure how long, probably first or second generation. It says it's model A1084, 2005.
This would be an 802.11g AirPort Express base station. There is only one generation of this version.
When i click on the icon in the Airport Utility, it says this version of Airport Utility (v.3.6.1) doesn't support this base station.
I'm not aware that Apple produced a v3.6.1. Did you mean v5.6.1 instead? If so this version is meant to administer these older 802.11g AirPorts on Macs running OS X Leopard or Snow Leopard. More precisely for versions 10.5.7 thru 10.6.8 ... so your MacBook should be able to run this version of the AirPort Utility.
I played music through the external speakers as recently as a couple of weeks ago, both in iTunes and on You Tube.
If you are streaming from YouTube, then you must be using a third-party solution like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil. Is this correct?
The only thing that has happened recently, though i don't know why it would make any difference, is that a few days ago for the first time, i did a backup of my hard drive to the Time Capsule, using Time Machine.
You're right. That should have not made any difference as far as streaming goes.

  • Disk Utility in recovery partition doesn't see errors present when scanning from 10.8.3

I'm running Disk Utility and finding some errors (Unable to bootstrap transaction group XXXX: inconsistent crosscheck, No valid commit checkpoint found, The volume XXXX was found corrupt and needs to be repaired, Incomplete or inconsistent CoreStorage Physical Volume set)
When I reboot into the recovery partition and try to fix these errors, the disk checks out fine.  Back in 10.8.3, I get the same errors.  Any ideas?

Yes, I chose the Repair Disk option from the Recovery Partition Disk Utility.  This is a FileVault encrypted drive, and I've entered in the password to unlock the disk.  From the Recovery Partition, Disk Utility reports no errors during Verify or Repair (same with Disk Permissions).
Once back in OS X 10.8.3, all the errors that I described previously show up in Disk Utility.  It can't be unmounted since it's my startup disk, so I'm stuck not being able to fix things.

  • Laserwriter Pro 630, USB to Parallel, Original Airport Extreme-- in 10.6.4

*If you have used a USB to Parallel adapter to place a pre-LPD/IP Laserwriter on your Snow Leopard machine, I'm looking for your input!*
I have a Laserwriter Pro 630 -- no more AppleTalk in Snow Leopard. I'd like to attach it through my Airport Extreme's USB printer port.
    It seems that:
    - Some people have had success with USB to Parallel cables
    - Some have been able to do this without additional software
    - Maybe the cable is the issue
    - Maybe it won't be possible
I read several sources that explained you can use a USB to Parallel cable to bring up the printer in Snow Leopard. I bought such a cable. In the *Add Printer* dialog, it could see the cable, but would not allow me to Add the printer.
I found a thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12060195#12060195) that referenced what I was seeing, and the USBTB back-end. After installing that, I was able to print (though when I changed the name of the printer queue, it didn't work -- I had to add the printer again). Further, if Airport Utility, under Printers, it doesn't see the USB cable or the printer at all.
I read an 11 page thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2073321&tstart=0) which referenced a handful of people using a USB cable, though several of them seemed to be able to do this without USBTB. It strikes me that if my printer (cable) required the addition of USBTB to the Mac, it might be that the Airport wouldn't be able to see it without that same backend.
    So I'm left wondering:
    - should I get a different cable?
    - should I install something else besides USBTB?
    - is it even possible to connect the LW Pro 630 to the Aiport Extreme over the USB to Parallel adapter?
    Thoughts, experiences... Sought!

You should get a parallel print server and not use USB.
Why do you say that? Many people report success using USB to parallel, and while there may be advantages of using a print server, there seems to be several disadvantages:
1- another power-consuming device I have to plug in and either run all the time or turn on when I turn on the printer
2- more cables and connections and configurations
    3- more expensive
I should probably note, too, that I re-read the 11 page thread and went ahead and bought the one cable mentioned there (iogear's). It works fine, selecting the 630's PPD. It won't be recognized by the Airport Exteme.
Oh well. Waking the Mac so I can print from the MacBook is pretty trivial, since to turn the printer on, I have to go to the same room the Mac is in.

  • Airport Disk Utility Doesn't See External Drive, But Airport Utility Does?

Hey! I am a recent Apple convert and just got a brand new MacBook and Airport Extreme. I am trying to get my Maxtor OneTouch 320GB HDD to work with the Extreme, but to no avail. The Airport Utility sees my HDD, but the Airport Disk Utility doesn't? Any hints/tips on how to fix this problem? Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

All I can think of is that the drive is formatted in NTFS which I have heard cannot be read by the AEBS(Airport Extreme Base Station), but I am confirming this right now in a different message. If you can copy the files, format your drive in HFS+(the Mac's standard file system), then reload the files. See if it works and reply back.

  • Airport Utility doesn't "see" my base station now

I've got an HP Pavilion running Vista. Have an Airport Extreme base station which was working fine with it, both Internet and Bonjour, until I had a problem last week and had to do a factory install from a disc.
I had a backup, and restored using that, but now Airport doesn't recognize the base station any more. I plugged my Internet in using an ethernet cable and downloaded the very latest Airport software. I tried turning off both Windows firewall and Norton firewall. No help.
I poked around Airport Utility, tried to open the baseconfig file. It asks me what folder it's in. I've done a Windows "Search" and there is no such file on the computer.
This base station continues to work fine with the Intel iMac a few feet away. My Pavilion just seems to be missing something after the restore. Thanks for any suggestions.

Any thought on what settings I need to change on the PC to get it to see the base station?
Often, this issue is caused by either the Windows Firewall blocking the attempted connection, or by the anti-virus software doing the same thing...or, it can be a combination of both things.
Check the settings on both applications to look for "blocked" connections and change the status to "allow" the connection.
No guarantees, but this will solve the issue perhaps 60-70% of the time.

  • Airport utility on Mac doesn't see AX

Airport utility on my Mac (10.7.5) doesn't see AX although it is connected to the internet through it. I've updated the Airport utility (6.2), restart the Mac, but still doesn't work.
My objective was to install an extern backup drive (to configure Time Machine through the wifi)
My iPhone & iPad do 'see' the AX and the external drive.......
    Who can help?

Airport utility on my Mac (10.7.5) doesn't see AX although it is connected to the internet through it.
Apple uses the AX abbreviation for the AirPort Express. The AirPort Extreme is known as an AEBS.
If you have an AirPort Extreme, temporarily connect a spare Ethernet cable from your Mac to a LAN <-> port on the Airport router to see if AirPort Utility can "see" it that way.
If you happen to have an older "round" AEBS, AirPort Utility 6.2 cannot be used to configure this older version of the AirPort. Instead, you will need to use AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion for that task.
My objective was to install an extern backup drive (to configure Time Machine through the wifi)
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so your results may not be to your liking if you try this. It does seem to work for some users....while other users (like me) have nothing but problems when they try this.
If you happen to have the older "round" version of the AirPort Extreme, the USB port on that version will only support the print function.

  • Airport Utility doesn't see functioning Airport Extreme Base Station

I have an Extreme (n) Base Station which serves as a WDS main with one relay Express and one remote Express. All three are functioning properly. Now I want to add a second remote Express paired with the main Extreme. However, Airport Utility doesn't see the Extreme, even when hardwired. So I have no way to add in the Apple ID of the new remote.
Any suggestions on how to resolve this? Is it necessary to restore default settings on the Extreme and reconfigure EVERYTHING?
    Thanks.

Not yet. Hoping there is some other approach, since if I reset it and then it loses the connection before configuration is complete, I lose the functions that are working now.

  • My Airport Utility doesn't see my Airport Express??

My Airport Utility doesn't see my Airport Express. . .so I cannot run iTunes. . it used to work fine. .

Version of utility, and express? Makes a huge difference.

  • Airport utility doesn't see airport extreme

i bought an Airport Extreme to replace a Linksys router that works but with a weak range.
I disconnected my Linksys router and plugged the cables into the Airport Extreme as per the instructions (btw, i don’t know why Apple has to use the silly little icons instead of labeling the WAN connection ‘Internet,’ but whatever.) I plugged in the power. The Link light for the connection came on.
The Airport Extreme status light glowed amber.
I ran the Airport utility on an iPad. It says it doesn’t see any Airport Extreme.
The Airport Extreme started flashing amber.
I read the troubleshooting instructions. I powered down the cable modem. I pushed the reset button on the Airport Extreme. I unplugged everything, plugged it in again. I tried the Airport utility on an iPhone. It said it didn't see any Airport Extreme. I checked the Airport utility on the iPad. Still didn't see anything.
I plugged my Linksys router back in and everything works.
    Huh?

Power off the cable modem for 5-10 minutes to allow it to reset. It will not recognize the AirPort until it resets correctly.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the cable modem to the WAN "O" port on the AirPort
Please go back to the home screen on the iPad
    Tap Settings (gear icon)
    Tap WiFi
Just under the heading of Setup a New AirPort Base Station, a listing of AirPort Extreme should appear.
    Does it? If yes,
Tap on AirPort Extreme to start the setup "wizard" and follow the prompts.

  • Airport Admin Utility Doesn't See Basestation But Setup Asst. Does

G4 won't connect to established Airport network that my MacBook Pro and PC do connect to. Admin Utility doesn't see basestation even though it is listed under the Airport icon at the top of the screen. Using Setup Assistant it sees the network, but when I enter the correct password it gets an error.
This system has worked perfectly in the past.
I suspect the transmitter in the G4 Airport card has dropped dead. Any other ideas will be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

The configuration for the Extreme base station asks if you want 802.11g or 802.11 b&g. I had checked .11g only forgetting that my G4 Airport card was .11b.
    Pilot error.

  • Installed the latest update, now Airport Utility doesn't see Airport

I ran the latest update, now my Airport Utility claims to not see my Airport Extreme although I'm still on my network.? Any suggestions before I completely reset the AE to factory settings and start over.

I purchased a new Airport Extreme last week, I run a home network with a G5 desktop and a G4 Laptop running 10.4.10. It took me a while to set it up as I entered the wrong password for my ISP SBCGlobal. After I finally had it going I had a couple of occasions where Airport Utility did not see Airport but I still had the solid green light on Airport. I am not sure what I did that resolved the problem but I know I did a restart one time and my Airport showed up. I may have also reset my base station and re-entered my info but I no longer have the problem.

  • Airport utility v6 doesn't see old airport extreme 1st ten

Using new version 6 Airport Utility, does not see older Airport Extreme (1st gen) that is on my network.  It sees my newer AP extreme and shows the ID for old machine yet I can't get to it to change configuration.

You will need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion to be able to access and make changes to any of the older AirPort products. AirPort Utility 6.0 only works with newer "n" devices.
You can use the more functional AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure all of your AirPorts...old or new.
Just keep both versions on your Mac and use the one that you want.

  • Running Airport utility wirelessly, doesn't see my basestation

Here's a possibly stupid question, but I hate to mess around with my Airport Extreme setup once i have it working.
When I try to run Airport Utility connected wirelessly from my laptop, it does not see my base station or the express I have extending it.
if i connect directly with an ethernet cable, it sees it just fine.
I can scan for the station but it just won't see it unless I plug in the cable.
What do I have set up wrong?

The Windows Firewall and or anti-virus program on the PC is likely blocking the wireless connection atttempt.
Probably best to leave things alone unless you are familiar with creating "exceptions" in the Windows Firewall and/or anti-virus programs.
