Airport utility 5.6 install fail

I have old airport expresses.  I am told my Airport utility does not support them, and I need version 5.6.
When I found that, it failed at the end of the installation several times.
Any ideas what to do?

Use the technique described in this thread: I can't install airport utility 5.6

need to use first version of airport express and running 10.7.5 airport utility 5.6 install fails need help

First try AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion. If that version does not install, go on to the next series of steps.
Here are the basic steps to install version 5.6 under OS X Lion (versions 10.7.3 +) or OS X Mountain Lion using CharlesSoft's Pacifist:
If you haven't already download the AirPort Utility disk image file directly from Apple Support Download
Place the resultant AirPortUtility56.dmg file onto your Mac's Desktop.
    Run Pacifist.
Click on the Open Package option. Find the disk image file that you just placed on your desktop, and then, click on Open.
The utility is located as follows: Contents of AirPortUtility56.dmg > Contents of AirPortUtility56.pkg > Contents of AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6.app
Drag AirPort Utility 5.6.app to your Mac's /Applications/Utilities folder.
You can now run the AirPort Utility from the Utilities folder.

Installer fails to install Airport Utility 5.6 on my Macbook Pro (OS X Lion)! The error window only advices to "contact the software manufacturer for assistance".

If you are running OS X 10.7.5, make sure that you have the correct version of AiPort Utility liked below:
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
You may have downloaded AirPort Uility 5.6.1, which is not the right version for Lion.
If you have moved to Mountain Lion 10.8.x, you will need to use a workaround to install AirPort Utilty 5.6.  See this article for details:

You are trying to install a version of Airport Utility earlier than 6.0, correct? If so see the following: Installing the Old AirPort Utility (Version 5.6) on Mountain Lion | frank.is.

  • Airport utility 5.6 install error

I'm getting an install error when I try install Airport Utility 5.6.  I am on a new (2 week old) Mac mini with all software up to date.  Tried several times and did a restart.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Catch 22. Apple is the software manufacturer, so you may need to contact them for this specific issue.
AirPort Utility 5.6 will not install on Mountain Lion 10.8.x either, using Apple's installer. But, there are several workarounds that seem to allow this.
One of them is discussed in this article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1167965/mountain_lion_and_the_ancient_airport_ba se_station.html
I do not have a Lion 10.7.5 Mac here to test, but can say that the workaround does work on Mountain Lion for me. Follow the instructions in Pacifist to manually "extract" the AirPort Utility 5.6 application and install it in the Utilities folder on your Mac.
It might work on Lion, if you want to give it a try. Otherwise, if you do not want to contact Apple, you could use another Mac....if available.... running an earlier operating system to configure the Express. Even a PC would work for the same purpose.

  • Airport Utility 5.6 fails to install

Hi, I need help.  I have spent the last 2 days trying to extend my wireless network with Airport Extreme and Airport Express.  I currently have Airport Utility 6.2 installed and am unable to "check" the box to allow the Airport Extreme to be "extended".  I've tried at least 30 times to install Airport Utility 5.6 and have also tried installing 5.5.3.  5.6 fails every time.  5.5.3 will install successfully, but when I open Airport Utility (under Utilities) it is still 6.2 and that's the only one to choose.  What am I doing wrong??
Please help.  Thank you so much in advance!!

OK, thanks for confirming that for me. Please try this:
Temporarily locate the AirPort Express in the same room or near the AirPort Extreme
Power up the Express and let it run a full minute
Push the reset button on the back of the Express with a pen or something similar and hold it for 7-8 seconds, then release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Click the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of your Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear.
Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express
AirPort Setup (part of AirPort Utility) will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to "extend" your AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express.....you can use Apple's suggestion here or shorten the name....then click Next
AirPort Setup will take another minute to configure everything. When you see the message of Set Up Complete, click Done and close AirPort Setup.
Now locate the Express approximately half the distance between the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage and power the Express back up.
    Please report on your results.

  • How to install Airport utility without windows 7

I just bought Apple Airport Extreme.  Everything is plugged in and Airport Utility did not install.  What if I do not have Windows 7?  How do I get my network setup?

Sorry, I do not have a PC handy to test, but you clearly have a PC setttings issue, likely related to the anti-virus settings or a Windows Firewall blocking action. Try posting in a Windows support forum for tips on how to connect to a wireless network.
The Windows troubleshooting guide may help as well:

  • HT5022 What works with Mountain Lion?  AirPort Utility 5.6 will not install on Mountain Lion.

What gives?  The AirPort Utility 5.6 wil not load on a computer running Mountain Lion.  Attempted both on an iMac and Macbook.

That is correct, the 5.6 version of the AirPort Utility will not install under Mountain Lion ... but it will run on it once installed. One option is to use a utility, like Pacifist, to extract and "install" the utility into the Utilities folder.

  • Can not see my time capsule in airport utility

I was trying to add a password so my time capsule could access ATT for internet and during the process it disappeared from the airport utility on my MAC?
I've tried resetting both devices, but it won't come back to the utility so I can configure it.  Rescanned several times.

Remove any other connection to the TC except one computer by ethernet. Press the reset again, and hold it for 10sec and wait for the TC to restart.
Restart the airport utility. If it fails to find the TC try plugging it into a different computer.
If the issue follows the TC take it to Apple Genius to be checked.

  • Airport Extreme base station not recognized anymore by Airport Utility software

    Hello,
I just encountered the problem today.
I have old Airport Extreme base sation (mushroom design).Picture below.
I have iMac 24". About this Mac Picture below.
Obviously, Airport Utility has been updated recently and today my network is not valid anymore, as well as the mushroom is not managed by Aiport Utility softwrare anymore. The only way to get WiFi now is using my computer as an antenna via the sharing of internet trough its WiFi card: not satisfactory.
The message of the software led directly to this support community.
The picture with the base station icon says: "this version of Airport Utility does not support this base station. To know more, check the Sevice and Support Community."
I did reset the base station may times, without success. I can't rename the base sattion, i can't create rename my network, i can't set up password access, i can't use WiFi other than the default Airport Extreme network.
Since this is not my field of knowledge, would anyone come up with a brilliant solution other than .... :
"Did Apple just manage to make you buy a new Airport base station ?."
    Thank you for your time.

    Hello,
Thank you for your reply and exlpanation.
I just downloaded the Aiport Utility 5.6.1 from Apple site. Unfortunately the OS X version is not compatible with this Airport Utility.
I don't have Time Machine neither.
Below is the message I got:
"Airport Utility cannot be installed on this hard drive. The Mac OS X version on this drive is not supported"
Is there something inbetween: a correction to Airport Utility 6.2 plug in that would accept my base station and compatible with my iMac ?.
    Thank you for your attention.

  • Need help with port mapping on Airport Utility 6.1

Ive been trying to port map on my TC with Airport Utility 6.1 and failing miserably. Port still closed. Can anyone advise where Im going wrong? Am trying to set up my home camera to be viewed outside.
I managed to key in the ports etc under Network and Port Settings. But nothing works. I'm tearing my hair out.
Any suggestions to try would be helpful.
    Thanks

Use the 5.6 utility.. it is much easier and I think works better.. although you cannot load 5.6 directly into 10.8 the version for Lion actually works fine.
    Download 5.6.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
    Download unpkg
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/16357/unpkg
Open the AU 5.6 dmg and drag the pkg over the open unpkg.. it will create the directory on the desktop. You can either run it from there or drag the utility to your utilties directory.
Take screen shots of each step. Post them here.
That way we can tell you where it has gone wrong.
What port exactly does the camera need open?
    How are you connecting remotely?
ie do you have a fixed public IP?? If not how are you getting IP?
Is the TC the only router in the network.. it is irrelevant unless the TC is the one and only router.

  • Unable to connect to AE 802.11n through airport utility -despite resetting

    Hi all,
I do realize that there are a number of threads adressing what seems to be my problem, but none of the solutions have worked for me.
I have a 2 year old AE 802.11n that has given me flawless wireless network for a long time now. I have for some time been unable to connect to it and change settings through the Airport utility, for example I was unable to update to the 7.4.1 firmware, so I am (was) running 7.3.2.
Today I wanted to setup a external hard drive connected to the aiport, so I needed the Airport utiltiy. After numerous tries, including a direct connection through an ethernet cable, I was still unable to connect. I was getting the infamous 'Make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6728)' error message, despite being able to detect the base fine.
It seemed that resetting the airport had helped a lot of other people, but Alas!! I used soft reset, hard reset and factory reset (presseing the reset button while plugging in the power), and still no luck. The only change is that now my network is no longer working (not surprising), and the base name has changed to factory default. What puzzles me is that Aiport utility states that the base is running the 7.3.2 firmware, while I am certain that it came with version 5.something as factory default. I have just left it without power for a few hours, and still the same.
So, how do I connect to my beloved AE again?
    Thanks!
Oh, and I have the same problem on my 3 year old iMac and my brand new MacBook Pro....
    Nikolaj 'getting desperate' HTP

    I found a workaround:
I removed my new (5.4.1) version of Airport utility, and re installed 5.3.2 (downloaded here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/airportutility53 2forleopard.html)
I could then access the Base, setup my AirDisk, update the firmware, and AFTER the firmware update, reinstall Airport utility 5.4.1. It seems that everything is working now.
