AirPort Utility 6.0 Invalid Channel switching from 5Ghz to 2.4Ghz

I have AirPort Utility 6.0 and the older Airport Extreme Oct 2009 (FC340LL/A) without the duel radios.  I believe I found a bug in the AirPort Utility 6.0 when switching between wireless modes.  When I asked the AirPort Extreme to operate at 5Ghz 802.11n only and picked the channel in the 100's it switch over fine.  I realized that the iPhone's must not have a 5Ghz radio in them because it could not find my wireless network anymore.  When I went back to the AirPort Utility to change it back to 2.4Ghz .11n or really trying to switch the radio back to 2.4Ghz I kept getting invalid channel when trying to save the config and update.  It seems that the  AirPort Utility 6.0 would not keep the channel setting saves to what I selected.  It did not matter if I picked channel 1 or 11 or automatic.  After quitting the AirPort Utility app a few times rebooting the AirPort Extreme a few times the only way around this was to tell the AirPort Utility to default the setting on my Extreme back to factory defaults which changed the radio back to 2.4Ghz mode.
Any suggestions Apple or anyone else ran into this problem?

I am experiencing this same problem.  When switching to the 5ghz only radio it reports the channel is invalid when I attempt to update.  Whether I choose automatic or any other channel it keeps saying it is invalid.  I am running the latest updates on my macbook pro and airport utility 6.0.  My airport express is version 7.6.1.  It is being run in bridge mode.  I also have a time capsule in bridge mode as well.
I am still working on this.

You might want to take a look at AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion. It is very similar to the previous version of AirPort Utility.

Yes, you can have both 6.0 and 5.6 on your Mac and choose the one that you want to use. I think you may find that while 6.0 is fun to look at, 5.6 provides a lot more functionality.

I downloaded ios 7 on my iphone 4s and cant play itunes from my iphone to my speakers through airport utility.  it shows im connected thro wifii.  i can play the speakers wirelessly from itunes on my computer so i know its my phone since ios 7 downloaded.  even the icons on the song that turn on the speakers are missing.  what do i have to do to get it back?  Ive deleted airport utility and reinstalled it.  i shutdown my phone and the airport base and wifii and restarted everything.  nothing seems to b helping.

I just encountered this problem for the first time and stumbled upon this forum to find a solution.  I played around with it a bit and it seems that if you slide your finger from the bottom up, you will come upon that new screen that will allow you to do various functions with your phone (put it in airport mode, lock, etc.), you can select your Airport from this screen and play your music wirelessly from your phone; at least this was my experience. Hope this helps!

Does anyone knows why Time Capsule would switch to Ch 1 (2.4GHz) all of the sudden?

Signals in the 5GHz range drop off faster than 2.4GHz signals when passing through walls, etc.
You might try forcing your Time Capsule to use channels 149 and up. According to the electronic book "Take Control of Your 802.11n Network, version 1.6" (www.takecontrolbooks.com/airport-n), 2009 versions of the Extreme and Time Capsule use higher power in the "upper 5 GHz band".
I have no financial relationship with Take Control Books.

  • Arport express problems going from 5ghz to 2.4ghz

Hi all I'm completely stumped with this one.
Last night I needed to change the express from N 5ghz to N/B/G 2.4ghz.
So using the manual setup screen I selected the options. but when I clicked on update, I just get the spinning wheel and the imac, macbook and ipod could no longer see the airport at all, despite it having a green light.
If I plugged it in to the imac using a cable it could see it at this point and I confirmed the settings were correct for N/B/G 2.4 ghz. It just doesnt want to talk to anything.
To get it working I had to do a hard reset and plug it back in to the imac using an ethernet cable, and set it up again but it seems to only want to work on 5ghz.
I'm pretty sure its not the airport at fault as I took an airport back to the store a while ago as it was doing exactly the same thing and was in warranty, I was told it was duff and it was replaced.
Has anyone seen this type of behaviour at all? I'm using utility version 5.5.1 and firmware 7.4.2
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to the discussions, Jamesn1!
I suggest that you try a factory default reset and then try to reconfigure the AirPort Express (AX) again.
To perform the factory default reset:
Power down the AX for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and while you continue to hold the reset button in, plug the AX back in to power
Keep holding the reset button until you see the amber light begin to blink more quickly
If you try this a few times and the AX will not allow you to create a 2.4 GHz network, I'm afraid the AX is defective and will need to be replaced.

  • Time Machine Account Settings Question in Airport Utility V6

Hi, I recently upgraded Airport Utility to V6 in which they now have a settings for the builtin Time Capsule to set Secure Shared Disks.  The settings are:
         1)  With Accounts,
         2)  With a disk password,
         3)  With a device password.
When I setup my Time Capsule I used  "disk password".  When I upgraded the Airport Utility to Ver 6, I switched from "disk password" to "with Accounts" for the Time Capsule backup.  The trouble was after the switch, all prevous backup on the TC were no longer available.  So I changed the settings from "with Accounts" back to "disk password".  All previous backups were not visible anymore from within "Enter Time Machine" space.  Fortunately when I changed it back to "with Accounts", I can access the recent backups but not those prior to the switch.  Can anyone help me so I can have a better understanding of how this settings work and its effect on the backups.  I thought that was only a security issue which should not affect the backups.  Thanks in advance.

Take a look at this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh21241.html
For improved security when backing up to a Time Capsule, the Time Capsule administrator can enable account mode and create individual accounts on the Time Capsule. Each Time Capsule account has its own network volume and password. If you back up to an individual account volume on a Time Capsule, other users can’t access your backups unless they know the password for that account.                                  Note: A Time Capsule set up with individual accounts contains a shared volume. Be sure you select your ownindividual volume as your backup disk, using the account name and instructions given to you by the Time Capsule administrator. The shared volume is intended only for information that all users canaccess.
With account access, each user gets his/her own volume, I assume, on which the Time Machine backups are stored.
My Time Capsule isn't set up yet, but I was playing with those settings. I *suspect* what happened when you switched from disk to account access is that there was sometime of (virtual?) repartiting taking place; for you went from one large partition (disk) to separate partitions (for each user). If that is right, big *if*, the original backups *may* be gone -- although there may be a way to recover them.
Were I you, and if those backups matter, I would stop using the Time Capsule for backups -- turn off Time Machine on all clients -- until you get it sorted out. You risk overwriting the original backups.

  • Stop Airport Utility from Automatically Launching

So, i just connected an Airport Extreme in my office and started getting slammed with calls from 50 confused users wondering why a utility was asking them to set up a network.
What port does does the utility scan so I can block it except to my computer or how can I prevent this from happening? Is there setting on the WAP that I can use to turn off whatever signal it sends out?  It brought production in my office to a stand-still, just for a minute, but still annoyed the bosses.  Or do I literally need to run around to all client machines and un-check all the boxes in their airport utility prefs?
    Thanks,

  • Help! Time Capsule set up help: Airport Utility not cooperating

    Hi Everyone,
I'm desperate for help with this issue. I have a Time Capsule, Base Station and Airport Express (all previous generation)at different points throughout the house. At first the issue was with the base station that refused to find my network so I called the helpdesk and got it fixed and all was well until the next day when the Time Capsule and Airport Express began to malfunction.
While everything connected to the network fine, our iphones couldn't find the network while downstairs. I tried to fix the issue but then I realized that while the base station wireless mode said 'extend network' the time capsule and airport express wireless mode said 'join network.'
I believed I overdid it on hitting the time capsule's reset button for a soft reset one too many times and now the slow flicker amber light will not steady itself or move to green and the computer is unable to successfully attach itself to our network. I've tried to restore the factory default settings but this only results in an error message 'there was an error trying to detect apple wireless devices, make sure network connection is valid and try again.'
All computers and phones have been updated with current firmwares etc. At this point, I'm stressed because I rely heavily on the internet for school and research and I don't know what else to do. Should I do a hard reset or just contact apple support?
    Thanks,
    Michelle

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
Please identify the "Base Station". Do you mean an AirPort Extreme Base Station? Are all those 802.11n-capable devices?
the base station wireless mode said 'extend network' the time capsule and airport express wireless mode said 'join network.'
That suggests to me that none of those devices is your "primary" router. If that's the case, what is the brand and model of the device that's connected to your Internet feed or Internet modem?

What does AirPort Utility say about the status of the Time Capsule? (If you have trouble connecting to the Time Capsule with AirPort Utility, try plugging an Ethernet cable from a LAN port of the Time Capsule to the Ethernet port of your MacBook Pro.)
I've tried to restore the factory default settings but this only results in an error message 'there was an error trying to detect apple wireless devices, make sure network connection is valid and try again.'
Did you do that reset by holding in the reset button until the status light flashed rapidly several times? Normally after a reset, you have to select the network for that device (usually named in the form "Apple Network xxxxxx") for AirPort Utility to "see" it. That's why an Ethernet cable can be useful.

  • HT3500 To add a wireless adapter to my Airport Extreme network using WPS, documentation recommends adding it under "Add wireless clients" in Airport Utility but there's no such an item anywhere in v6

I am trying to connect an Iogear Wifi adapter from my home entertainment center to my Airport Extreme home network (secured with personal WPA) using WPS. Apple's support literature says to do this through Airport Utility (v.6) choosing Manual Setup from Base Station Menu and Add Wireless Client. After hours of searching and fiddling I cannot find "Manual setup" or "Add Wireless Client" in the Airport Utility (v.6). HELP.  andy

Those instructions are for Airport Utility v5.5.3 or v5.6. As a matter of fact, Airport Utility 6.0 does NOT have that options. So assuming you have Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4, you have to download and install Airport Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion. Then follow those simple instructions you have.

  • Problems with Time Capdule (pre 5.5 Airport Util)

    Hi there,
I was given a Time Capsule as a Christmas present, but have come back to my home and find that I've left the setup disk behind.
I can't seem to locate the right version of the setup software online - and have been getting warning messages saying my current version (of Airport Utility) is 'not compatible with this device'. A software update doesn't seem to update this.
Would you be able to let me know whether I can access the setup software online somewhere or someone could email me the neccessary version of Airport Utility (5.5?) - is there other software I would need from the disk to configure Time Machine.
    Many Thanks
    Chris.

+Open AirPort Utility and select "Check for Updates…" from the AirPort Utility menu.+
The user is looking for AirPort Utility 5.5 which is only available on the CD that comes with the Time Capsule. It's not available for download via the "Check for Updates" route or on Apple's download site at this time.

  • Airport Utility and Firmware Q

Having just downloaded Airport Utility (5.3.2), I noticed the menu Base Station > Upload Firmware gives me the option of uploading firmware versions 5.5.1, 5.6, 5.7, or "other".
Does this really mean what it says? I am running firmware 5.5.1 due to the problems I've heard of with subsequent versions, and want the option of going back to it if necessary.
From what source would the firmware originate? Is it already contained in Airport Utility or does AU download it from a server somewhere?
Do 5.6 or 5.7 offer any advantages over 5.5.1 anyway?

    This is my concern:
From what source would the firmware originate? Is it already contained in Airport Utility or does AU download it from a server somewhere?
I want to know that if 5.7 gives me heartburn, I can go back down to 5.5.1...

  • Switch makes AirPort invisible to AirPort Utility?

    Hi all.
    Wired connections:
iMac27" Yosemite connected to a D-Link dumb switch connected to a AirPort Extreme v7.7.3.
When wiring run through switch, iMac intermittently can't see the APE. Removing switch from setup and going direct iMac->APE resolves issue, and then can reinstall switch and still see APE with switch in place. Alternately, when wired if the APE isn't accessible I can turn on wifi, and the utility will then see the APE., and I can turn wifi back off - retaining visibility of the APE for a while again.
This is just odd behaviour - as the switch isn't actually doing anything but directing the packets.
Any thoughts, ideas, or even a "hey I know exactly what that problem is" with solution would e very much appreciated.

    Bob,
I agree, asking "what changed?" is a great starter. I did a fair amount of this sort of head scratching before posting the thread here, and that is something I asked a bunch. If the ONLY way to have the Utility see the APE was by bypassing the switch, I could answer the what changed with 'I removed the switch". That would directly lead to troubleshooting the switch itself.
The problem is this: I can get the exact same result by turning on the wifi and then turning it off again (without touching any wiring, using the software switch).
Further (and i already posted this) - ALL OTHER IP TRAFFIC IS BEHAVING AS IT SHOULD. If i had a bad connector or a bad cable or a switch that was misbehaving, wouldn't I experience drops/lag/nonconnectivity in other apps/services? I would have hangs in streamed content, oddly slow load times for webpages, etc - if I had line/switch basic function issues **it would show up in other ways as well as with the Utility!
So we need to ask (more accurately for diagnosis) "what changed in BOTH of these scenarios that temporarily fixed the problem?"
The answer, I now realise, is 'a new connection is made from the iMac to the APE in both sets of actions - one by physical disconnection and reconnection and the other by activating a new NIC'. This revelation still leaves as an open question the matter of the other IP activities being totally fine during the same time period of the Utility's inability to 'see' the APE...
As a failsafe to eliminate the switch as being the problem, I have removed it from the setup altogether, and will await a re-occurance of the 'can't see it' issue. If I get the issue to happen with no switch in place, we can kick that possibility out the door. Since this is an intermittent issue it may be a day or so until I can prove it.

  • How to switch from Airport Extreme to Airport Time Capsule ?

Switching from Air Port Extreme to the Airport Time Capsule.
Software for the older AP Extreme is up to date.   Airport Utility 5.6.1
When I disconnect the Extreme and re-connect the Timecapsule I get the follwoing software update message:
"This version of AirPort Utility (meaning 5.6.1)  doesn't support this AirPort wireless device and might improperly configure the device if you continue to use it. Check www.apple.com/support/airport for the latest version of AirPort Utility."
However, I am no longer connected to the Internet and therefore cannot download the new Airport Software.
    Stumped ?
    Any thoughts ?

  • AirPort Utility in Windows - cannot set 5GHz channel manually

I am trying to manually set my 5GHz channel to something other than automatic. I change it to
and click the update button. The router restarts and my changes do not stick. It now shows
The 2.4GHz channel can be modified but not the 5GHz. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

So are you saying that it does not work with v6 on an Apple product either?
That is the info I have at this point in time. I have totally avoided AC models.. I think they are poor cf the same chipset models available from Asus or Netgear that have real GUI setups with real functionality.
Is there functionality that is available in the Mac version but not in the Windows version?
The v5 utility in Mac and PC was the same functionality..
The v6 utility in Mac and never released for PC has far less functionality. Which is designed I guess to correspond to the new model Apple routers which also have less functionality. For instance there is no longer a log function you can use. Apple do not believe in functionality.. it is supposed to be as near to self setting as possible.. the ideal would be purely automatic and no airport utility. Apple are slowly working towards their nirvana.
Why has Apple neglected to update the Windows version? Looks like the Windows version 5.6.1 (Post Date: Jun 11, 2012) is a year older than the Mac version (Post Date: Jul 11, 2013).
Apple do not reveal info like this.. but my guess is they produced an iOS version so they figured if you don't have a Mac then surely you own an iphone or ipad.. if not you should buy one.

New ADSL modem/router, no problem setting up network. Trying to 'extend' network with Time Capsule (and wireless backing up) as I had in the previous house without a problem. The light is flashing amber, but it alweays did that.

If you can temporarily connect your computer to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable, you should be able to see it in AirPort Utility.
In fact I want to access my TC configuration in order to get back the password needed for my wife to connect to it.
Until you can resolve the AirPort Utility issue, you may be able to recover that password with the Keychain Access utility.
