Airport Utility 6.0 where are Printers settings? Disks settings are very limited.

After update to Airport Utility v.6.0 on my Airport Extreme I found that new versions has no Printers settings at all. I can see my printer on my Macs as well I can manage it from another Mac having older Airport Utility version, but not from a new one....
Additionally, new Airport Utility version has very limited settings for managing disks connected to it.
I even, at the beginning, was thinking that it put Airport Express firmware to my Extreme.
Firmare update works fine. An update on Express was not smooth, as it lost conncectivity with my Extreme, but after reset it - I got it back (the upgrade changed network name that an Express is talking to an Extreme by removing brackets from its wifi name)

My catch-all list of Airport 6.0 & Firmware 7.6.1 problems:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I've compiled a catch-all list of problems and changes with Airport Utility version 6.0 and FW 7.6.1. Some of the items may be relevant to this thread.
THE PROBLEMS WITH AIRPORT UTILITY 6 AND FIRMWARE 7.6.1:
Introduction: If you find AirPort Utility v6.0 too limiting or strange, you can ALSO install AirPort Utility v5.6, released alongside v6.0, to maintain all your previous capabilities. It works fine with both Airport g and n devices.
PLEASE NOTE: According to Apple you must FIRST install Airport Utility v6.0 in order to access and install Firmware upgrade 7.6.1. Do that first. THEN install Airport Utility v5.6 and use it instead if you prefer.
1) According to Apple's documentation, Airport Utility version 6.0 is ONLY for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion. It is NOT for 10.6 Snow Leopard. If you accidentally installed v6, you'll have to dig around in Apple - Support - Downloads for the previous relevant version for your devices and OS version. Here is the relevant page:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1483
2) The HELP for Airport Utility has been updated. When you first access it you may well be looking at the old Help. It is supposed to update itself spontaneously over the Internet. It took a couple minutes in my case. Be sure you are looking at the NEW Help before you start using it. One way to tell is that the list of help topics essentially doubles from what there used to be. Also, the very first topic in the NEW Help should read:
"Set up an AirPort device > Set up a new AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule"
3) The HELP has some WRONG information. Here we go:
3a) There is NO "Enable Guest Network" setting. You CANNOT create a guest network or name it or give it any settings. Why this is still listed in Help, I have no idea. Why the setting is gone: This is most likely because the technology behind guest networks, WPS, has been thoroughly CRACKED in the wild. Google "WPS cracked" for lots of documentation of the situation. It won't be resolved soon.
3b) I can't find any 'Setup Assistant". Everything is now manual. This is not to say that there isn't a setup assistant that appears when you FIRST set up your Airport device. I don't know.
4) After installing Airport Utility v6.0, there is no indication of the accompanying firmware update until you decide to run the new version. Even then, you have to click on the big icon of your Airport device and notice an 'Update' button about halfway down the popup window. You then have to assume that this button is telling you to update your firmware.
5) After you update your Airport device's firmware, you may well discover an ERROR subwindow popping up inside Airport Utility that says:
"An error occurred while updating the firmware. -6721"
Don't panic! All you need to do is go into your Wi-Fi settings, either in your menubar or the Network preferences, and turn OFF Wi-Fi, then turn ON Wi-Fi again. This is part of a long standing bug in Lion's Wi-Fi with which I bet you are already familiar, certainly up through Lion version 10.7.2.
6) Miscellaneous changes in Airport Utility 6:
6a) The keyboard command to manually change your Airport devices settings is GONE. You have to click the little 'Edit' button after clicking on the big icon for your device.
6b) There is no longer any summary window for your Airport device. You have to instead click on the big "Internet" icon for related data, then click on the big icon for your Airport device for local settings data.
6c) There is no longer any HELP advising users to EXPORT their settings. (The Help only talks about Import of settings). BE SURE TO EXPORT YOUR NEW SETTINGS! I did this immediately after both updates.
6d) MAC address filtering for Airport devices is GONE.
6e) All references to IPV6 anywhere are GONE. I have to assume the IPV6 settings are now entirely working and entirely automatic. Let's hope so.
6f) Signal and Noise data and graphs are GONE. Use Apple's Wi-Fi Diagnostics app instead. Apple have hidden it here in Lion:
/System/Library/CoreServices/W-Fi Diagnostics
6g) In order to access the menu items in Airport Utility, you have to first click on the big icon for your Airport device.
--> No doubt there are other changes, oddities or bugs related to these changes. But this is what I came up with during a cursory strafing of the software.
  • AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported
    This meassage I've got after trying to install the software:AirPort Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume is not supported.
    Please, advise.
    What version of AirPort Utility are you attempting to install, and which AirPort Base Station model do you have? Look on its case for a four digit model number preceded by the letter A.
  • I have a older Airport Express unit that requires Airport Utility 5.6. When I try to install 5.8 on my OS X10.8 iMac, I get the message "Airport Utility can't be installed on this disk. The version of Mac OS X on this volume in not Supported"
    Why should I have to spend money to solve this problem? Many others have the same concern, Airport Utility 6 does not support  older Airport Express units. This is Apple's problem. I've tried many solutions proposed on the net but none worked. I'm still trying for a work around.
  • AirPort Utility 6.0 - where are status light options?
    The old utility let me change the status light to be solid or flash on activity on my AirPort Extreme.
    I'm looking all over the place in the new Utility 6, but either must be blind or they took that functionality out?
    Can you guys see it? Anyone?
    Recommend that you use AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion for full functionality. This was released at the same time as 6.0 for users who need more features.
    You can keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you need. Maybe the next version of 6.0 will be better.
  • Airport Utility won't let me change time capsule settings....
    I've had my TC about 2 weeks, and haven't had any problems until now....
    when I am in close proximity, i use it with an ethernet cable, and if i am in other parts of the house i will set it to transmit wirelessly. up until now there hasn't been any problems with this. now however, it is connected via ethernet, and when i open airport utility it recognises the TC, but when i click continue to update the settings and change it back to wireless, it get's stuck on the "reading the time capsule's configuration..." page, and after five minutes says "there was an error with the connection-6722".
    I can read files from the TC and write to it. i just can't update the settings! can anyone help??
    thankyou.
    crillix wrote:
    This has me a bit confused as to why you're doing this.
    I say this because my Macbook is sometimes directly connected to the TC over a wired network connection, and sometimes wirelessly via the TC. It has no trouble backing up regardless of what connection is utilized. I just leave the wireless enabled on the TC, and so have no need to re-configure the TC. I can read the TC configuration with the Airport Utility via either connection.
    I'm not sure this helps, but am I missing something??
    Mac OS X, Airport Utility & TC all at latest levels......
  • Airport Utility 5.0: Where is it?
    Can anyone explain where Airport Utility 5.0 can be found? It is impossible to install Airport Base Station Update 2007 001 without it, but it doesn't appear to be available as a download.
    Infuriated.
    Hello ollywood. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
    Interestingly, Apple doesn't provide the new AirPort Utility as a download since it's provided on the installation CD that comes with the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station. Have you tried contacting Apple for a replacement CD?
    As an option, here's a workaround...
    - Download the AirPort Base Station Update 2007-001 file from: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airportbasestationupdate2007001formac.htm l
    - Double-click AirPortBaseStationUpdate2007001.dmg to mount and display it's contents.
    - From the AirPortUtilityUpdate window, right-click on "AirPortBaseStationUpdate2007001.mpkg."
    - Select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu.
    - In the "AirPortBaseStationUpdate2007001.mpkg window, double-click on the "Contents" folder to open it.
    - In the "Contents" window, double-click on the "Packages" folder to open it.
    - Right-click on "AirPortUtility.pkg."
    - Select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu.
    - In the "AirPortUtility.pkg window, double-click on the "Contents" folder to open it.
    - Double-click on "Archive.pax.gz." This will create a new folder on your Desktop, named "Applications." The AirPort Utility will be inside this new folder. You can copy or move it to your Applications folder.
  • AirPort Utility doesn't cancel the Time Cpause disk erase process
    Hello!
    Am I the only one, whos' AirPort Utility for Windows 5.6.1 doesn't cancel the previously started erase process? (See the picture)
    Pressing the "Cancel" buttin doesn't change anything. The windows blinks and nothing happens. here's the screenshot of my Time Capsule status for the last 4 days (7-pass erase takes this long).
    Short story:
    No, you don't.
    Long story:
    Consider a TC a fully isolated and autonomous computer. Essentially it really is  - but the core feture of embedded OS is network operations and it's functions are limited to taks it supposed to perform. AirPort Utility is just a remote control for it. TimeCapsule is fully self-sustained in handling its operations - from network operations to hardware monitoring. If you told it to start self-formatting process it doesn't need any outter interference.
  • I need to find out how much wifi data my apps are using. I have a very limited amount of wifi data, and I am exceeding my monthly allowance. Apparently, even apps I think are not open are sending/receiving data through the wifi and using up my allowance.
    I need to find out how much wifi data my apps are using. I am on a very limited amount of WiFi data each month, which I am regularly exceeding. I have been told to work out which of my apps is using the data. Also, I think I have closed an app by double clicking the home button, then swiping the app up - is this the way to close it, or will it still be sending/receiving data?
    Go into your Settings : General : and turn off background refresh for your apps.  In Settings : Mail  turn Fetch new data to OFF and Load Remote Images to OFF.  This will mean that Mail will only check for messages when you actually use it, and all your advertising junk mail won't have all the images in it.
    Turn off push notifications every chance you get.
    Make sure you are actually quitting apps:  to quit apps press the Home button twice and you should see a bunch of smaller screen images for every open app.  To quit the app swipe from the screen image (not the icon) upward off the top of the iPad.  You can swipe left and right to see more open apps, but there must be no left-right movement on the screen when you swipe upward to close the app.
    Turn off your internet connection when you do not need it.  The easiest way to do this is to swipe up from the bottom of you screen to get the control centre, and then touch the airplane to turn on airplane mode.  You can repeat this sequence to turn it back on again when you need it.  Most especially turn airplane mode on whenever you are sleeping your iPad for long periods.  This will save battery life too.  OR actually turn your iPad off - which means holding the power key down for several seconds until the red swipe bar appears, and then swipe to turn it off.  If you go this route, note that it will take longer to turn on then it takes to wake from sleep.
  • Airport 7.6.1 -where's the syslog server settings gone
    Upgraded and I now can't find the syslog server settings?
    Thanks Tesserax, great help, I've reinstalled 5.6 and I can access the syslog server settings again. I assumed it was due to upgrading firmware on the extreme.
    I have to say, to remove the ability to control a function on the AirPort devices from the newest version of the Utility is the opposite of sensible.
  • Time Machine Account Settings Question in Airport Utility V6
    Hi, I recently upgraded Airport Utility to V6 in which they now have a settings for the builtin Time Capsule to set Secure Shared Disks.  The settings are:
         1)  With Accounts,
         2)  With a disk password,
         3)  With a device password.
    When I setup my Time Capsule I used  "disk password".  When I upgraded the Airport Utility to Ver 6, I switched from "disk password" to "with Accounts" for the Time Capsule backup.  The trouble was after the switch, all prevous backup on the TC were no longer available.  So I changed the settings from "with Accounts" back to "disk password".  All previous backups were not visible anymore from within "Enter Time Machine" space.  Fortunately when I changed it back to "with Accounts", I can access the recent backups but not those prior to the switch.  Can anyone help me so I can have a better understanding of how this settings work and its effect on the backups.  I thought that was only a security issue which should not affect the backups.  Thanks in advance.
    Take a look at this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh21241.html
    For improved security when backing up to a Time Capsule, the Time Capsule administrator can enable account mode and create individual accounts on the Time Capsule. Each Time Capsule account has its own network volume and password. If you back up to an individual account volume on a Time Capsule, other users can’t access your backups unless they know the password for that account.                                  Note: A Time Capsule set up with individual accounts contains a shared volume. Be sure you select your ownindividual volume as your backup disk, using the account name and instructions given to you by the Time Capsule administrator. The shared volume is intended only for information that all users canaccess.
    With account access, each user gets his/her own volume, I assume, on which the Time Machine backups are stored.
    My Time Capsule isn't set up yet, but I was playing with those settings. I *suspect* what happened when you switched from disk to account access is that there was sometime of (virtual?) repartiting taking place; for you went from one large partition (disk) to separate partitions (for each user). If that is right, big *if*, the original backups *may* be gone -- although there may be a way to recover them.
    Were I you, and if those backups matter, I would stop using the Time Capsule for backups -- turn off Time Machine on all clients -- until you get it sorted out. You risk overwriting the original backups.
  • If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?
    If I use airport utility to erase my time capsule will all my settings be lost? Does "import configuration" work well?
    Erasing the Time Capsule's internal HDD, via the AirPort Utility, will NOT affect the TC's configuration settings. However, if your intent is to completely remove these settings as well, you will want to perform a "factory default" reset on the TC to do so.
    If you first export the configuration, you can always import it back in after the reset to get you back up and running quickly.
  • Guest Network in Airport Utility
    I have just been reconfiguring my wireless network. I noticed it's still broadcasting a guest network, yet when I try to configure it in airport utility I can no longer find the guest network settings. I'm sure they used to be in the Wireless section of the Airport Extreme setup. Does anyone know where have they moved to? Thanks.
    It really helps us provide a better and more accurate answer for you.....if we know what operating system you are using on your Mac or PC.
    We'll take a guess that you are using Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks.
    Open AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Extreme
    Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
    Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
    If you are still using the Leopard, Snow Leopard, or PC version of AirPort Utility.....the Guest Network settings appear as their own tab.
  • Had a Airport Express connected to my stereo and it was working.  I brought an Airport Extreme and suddenly it took over and Airport Express stopped working and disappeared from Airport Utility. What I am supposed to do?  ar2ro
    I have an Airport Express connected to my stereo and it was working without any problem.
    Recently I bought an Airport Extreme to use it as my Base Unit connecting it to my DSL.
    I followed the instructions of the Airport Utility, and it started working.
    Suddenly, problems started happen the Airport express that was connected to the stereo , stopped working and it disappeared from the Airport Utility area , as it did not exist in the network. I tried to reset it but it did not appear in the Airport Utility page.
    Apparently I have other problems with the private network that it created because I cannot use it because of problems with the password that was created.  I can only use the network that  I created for my guest...
    I dont know if my problem is a configuration problem or  there is problem with the equipment.
    I read that other users where having the same problem with the Airport express , using non apple equipment as their base unit , but I thought that using the Airport Extreme was going to be compatible and no problems would happen.
    What should I do?
    Common Problem. Common solution.
    Connect your Express via ethernet cable to the Mac while other network connections on the Mac are switched OFF.
    After the Express shows up, change the settings of the Express to join the existing network. Take the appr. settings.
    Unplug and reconnect your Mac to the network.
    Check if the Express shows up in Airport Utility
    Alternative solution:
    Hardreset the Express to factory settings
    (while on power push the Pin next to the audio plug with a paperclip. Plug out the Express still holding down the little button then replug the Express to power and release button)
    After that, the Express will show up in the Airport Utility.
    Make all needed settings.
    I would prefer the first solution, its easier just to plug a cat5 cable.
  • Windows 7 airport utility will not detect time capsule
    Hi, I have a current generation time capsule and I am having problems connecting to my Windows 7 home premium PC. The time capsule connects and works perfectly using my Macbook. My set up is this: DSL router conected to the time capsule via ethernet cable. I can get the time capsule to pick up wireless and connect to my PC, but upon opening the airport utility it will not detect the time capsule at all. I have trolled the internet for about 3 hours trynig various things, none of which have worked. Has anyone had this issue and resolved it?
    The airport utility has nothing whatever to do with disk access.
    It helps having bonjour available in the computer. And the utility should be able to bring up TC setup.. although as noted.. apple have already bypassed windows as it is too old. The new TC requires v6 utility.. the version for windows is 5.
    None of that is relevant to opening the TC hard disk.
    -If this is not the case, can you please advise on how to access the storage on a windows 7 PC
    Did you follow the instructions from my previous post.
    Open your windows explorer and type into the address bar,
    \\TCname or \\TCIPaddress
    Where you replace TCname with the actual name of the TC.. your nice new short SMB compatible name.
    Or use the IP address of the LAN on the TC.. by default 10.0.1.1
    If you did this and it failed, you need to ping the TC by name and by IP address from command window..
    Does the TC respond to pings??
    If so it should be able to open the TC disk.. but you will probably have to use the IP address not the name which is likely illegal.
    I also mentioned the issue of SMB names..
    Please tell me what is the name of your TC as you set it up in the Mac..
    Does it look like this.
    Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule.
    If so it is too long.. it has spaces and it has an illegal character.. from windows the name should be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
    Please reset the TC to factory and start again.. you can use the airport utility in the Mac.
    Do not use apple suggested names.. which are WRONG.
    Use names like TCgen5
    And for wireless TCwifi
    Then try again with the windows.
    If you continue to have issues, try using ethernet to the computer from the TC instead of wireless.
    Make sure ipv6 is on and set to link-local or the PC equivalent of that.. I will need to look that up.
  • Airport Utility/Airport Admin Utility
    Dear all!
    I bought an Airport Express last week and was able to configure it via Airport Utility. Now I wanted to change the settings but I´m not able to enter the Menue bar from Airport Utility. I can go threw the assistant and manual configuration but most of the other items are shown grey and I cannot click on them (i.e. to check security settings or add clients).
    Please let me add one more related question: Is Airport Admin Utility just the old name for Airport Utility or do I need it in addition to set some changes?
    Thanks in advance for your feedback and thoughts
    kind regards
    Now I wanted to change the settings but I´m not able to enter the Menue bar from Airport Utility.
    I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Could you describe this a little more?
    Please let me add one more related question: Is Airport Admin Utility just the old name for Airport Utility or do I need it in addition to set some changes?
    AirPort Admin Utility has been replaced by the newer, better AirPort Utility. You don't need AirPort Admin Utility if you have AirPort Utility.
