Airport utility 6.3.4 sees my airport express but 5.6.1 doesn't
I've done a factory reset on my old style airport express. I know that I need to use airport utility 5.6.1 to configure it, but it won't show up there. However if I look under the wifi icon at the top of my Macbook I can see it there, but of course 6.3.4 won't configure it.
I have another old style AEx which shows up fine in 5.6.1. Any ideas please?
Perform a factory default reset on the older AirPort Express as follows:
Power off the Express
Wait a minute or two
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously power up the Express
Release the reset button after the hold period
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
Using AirPort Utility 5.6.1, see if the older Express will appear so that it can be reconfigured
If the Express will not appear after a few reset tries, it is defective and will need to be replaced. Since the Express is at least 8+ years old....probably older....and the average life of an Express is about 4-5 years, the Express has had a good life.

Airport Utility can no longer see my Airport Express Base Station.
Hi all the problem I have is as follows;
I've set up my Airport Express Base Station some time ago to print wirelessly from my HP Photosmart C4280 and it was working fine.
However recently when I've gone to print a document, even though the printer is working fine and the Airport Express Base Station is showing a green light nothing happens. I've gone into the Airport Utility and its say's it can't see the Airport Express Base Station (even though it still has a green light showing). If I unplug the Airport Express and plug it in again, the Airport Utility can suddenly see it again.
I've successfully gone through the reset process but after a few minutes the Airport Utility can no longer see the Airport Express Base Station which means I can't print a document wirelessly. I've repeated the reset process several times with the same outcome.
Everything was working fine up until recently, has the Airport Express Base Station developed a fault? or is there something I'm not doing.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.If you're comfortable resetting all settings, unplug it, hold down the reset button and keep holding it in as you plug it back in - keep holding it for another 10-20s until the amber light flashes
Then, open airport utility, now you should be able to see the device either on-screen or in the upper left under 'other wi-fi devices' -
AirPort Utility was unable to find any AirPort base stations...
I recently purchased a new AirPort Extreme base station 802.11n, and I followed the manual to get it set up. I installed the software, but when I launch AirPort Utility it cannot detect my base station. (I get the above error message).
I've got an old G4 desktop mac (QuickSilver model) running OSX 10.4.10, and it's got the original AirPort card installed. I've made sure AirPort it turned on in my menu bar.
I decided to set up my base station by connecting an Ethernet cable directly from my base station into my Mac, and set up my network that way. But as soon as I try it wireless, then AirPort utility looses the base station.
My base station is connected to a Netgear ADSL2+ Modem Router DG834. (The router and my internet connection are working fine). I've got all solid green lights on the router and the base station.
Is there some compatibility issue with my old AirPort card and my new base station? Or do I have a faulty card maybe?

Thanks, Tom.I have the same setup as you and I had problems like yours. For some reason the old airport card doesn't seem to work with the new airport extreme base station if you are using WEP encryption. WPA works fine. In order to connect to your new base station so that you can administer it with the new Airport utility try this first: If the airport icon is displayed on your tool bar, click on it and select other. Enter your network name and password. With a little luck you will now be connected to your base station and it will be found by airport utility. If that doesn't work. Press the rest button on the back of the base station and hold it for at least one minute. That should completely rest your base station so that it is not encrypted. You should then be able to select it from the drop down menu when you click on the airport icon on the tool bar. Once you are connected, airport utility will find it.

My airport utility says it cannot find any airport wireless devices, even though I am accessing the net via my wifi. What's up with this? Also, I cannot connect to my Photosmart b209a printer, though a different computer - same Macbook Pro can. I tried redownloading the software, but in the setup I get a "device not reachable" message: "However to continue configuring the device in network, your Mac must have access to the device. So please make sure that your Mac has access to the Network ..." I've checked my network on the system preferences and it's properly connected. I'm on the net as I do this. Tis very frustrating, and any assistance woud be appreciated.
Airport Utility is for administration of genuine Apple Base Stations. If you have a different Brand, Airport Utility can do nothing for you.
I think they're using ethernet.
To connect a Printer via Ethernet, no password is needed.
We already tried the password for the internet and that did not work...
If a password is required to connect to the Internet, then WiFi is likley being used, and that WiFi password is the one needed for the Printer connect wirelessly as well.
What make&model Printer? Is it indeed a Wireless Printer? Most connect via USB, but that would force it to use a specific computer to assist in printing. -

joglennWhen having difficulties accessing the Time Capsule (TC) via the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the TC wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the TC's LAN ports.
Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.
Finally, if you are attempting to access the TC via an Ethernet connection, be sure that your Ethernet port is NOT configured for Jumbo Frames, i.e., using an MTU of 9000+. -
having trouble with my Airport Utility not supporting either of my Airports Expresses or Basestation. Do i have to update Firmware of airports or is the issue with my version of Utility which i believe is the latest. Thank you.
AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will not support the older versions of the AirPort Express.....model numbers A1084 and A1088. Check on the side of the Express for the model number.
In addition, AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will not support the older "round" or "dome" shaped versions of the AirPort Extreme.
Can you check to see how your devices might be affected? -
"Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport after restarting"
Airport Express B has been working great for two years, and suddenly it can't be found in Airport Utility.
When I hard reset it, and re-set it up again, I go through the whole procedure, using the Utility to write the new settings : "The settings for this Airport Express have been successfully updated...waiting for Airport Express to restart" and at that point nothing happens - the light stays continuously green, no restart, and shortly afterwards I get the failure message "Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport wireless device after restarting".
I come out of Airport Utility, reopen it, and it can't find the Airport Express. Nothing. A £65 brick that has ceased to be, and this forum is full of people with similar problems. I've tried all of the fixes, including hard-wiring it using Ethernet, and again it goes through the whole procedure abut when trying to restart the AE, fails to find it.

- I just updated the firmware on my base station (it a white dome?? i think snow?) to 5.7
- I am running AirPort Utility 5.5.2 (also recently updated)
- I have (3) AirPort Expresses (just updated firmware yesterday) and now are not being seen in the airport utility. They had been running for about two years just fine.
I have done a hard reset and was then able to see the Airport Express and go through set up. Upon finalizing the set up I get this message:
"Airport Utility was unable to find your Airport device after restarting."

I had the same kind of problems when I upgraded to the latest version of Airport (5,7).
The Airport express seemed to have been disconnected, and nothing I could do to reconfigure it, after hard resetting it, seemed to be working.
I did two or three hard resets before remembering having been in a situation like that a while ago.
I went back to the Mini, **deactivated the firewall (in the "preferences" panel), then deactivated also the firewall of the Modem/router provided for my internet connection. Then I went in the other room and did another hard reset of the Airport express, came back in the mini's room, opened the Airport utility, the icon of the Airport express was already visible (which wasn't the case before... ), did the re-configuring.
The reconfigured Airport express reappeared very quickly, then I reactivated the firewalls of the Mini and the router. Voilà !
It took less than two minutes !
And since then the Mini have been streaming music without a glitch to the Airport express.

I recently bought an Airport Extreme to replace a D-Link DGL4300. My network is as follows: DSL > Modem > Airport Extreme > Ethernet and Wireless clients (wireless clients include my iMac and my wife's MacBook). This worked fine for about 2 weeks, until my wife's MacBook started having connectivity issues. I did a soft reset on the Airport Extreme, and . . . poof. No internet for anyone. I did a hard reset and used the saved profile that had previously worked (for at least my computer), and after the Airport Extreme restarted, I received the dreaded "Airport Utility was unable to find your airport wireless device". I have repeated this cycle several times with complete power-downs of the modem, the Airport Extreme and all clients, with no change in result.
What's odd is that even though Airport Utility can't find the Airport Extreme, my home network works fine (i.e., all clients can talk to an internal media server and each other), but there is no internet at all. Any ideas?Alex Fisch wrote:

Until you can complete the configuration process, try connecting your Mac to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable to see if that allows AirPort Utility to see the Extreme. -

This is the message I have recieved in installing my AirPort Utility... Can anyone help me?Old AirPort base stations and Time Capsules aren't compatible with AirPort Utility 6.2, so you have to use AirPort Utility 5.6. As you have already updated, you can't install AirPort Utility 5.6 by the normal way.

What do I have to do ?? I can use my airport.I assume that your MacBook Pro is running OS X Mountain Lion ... correct? If so, version 5.6 can run just fine on this version of OS X; it just can't be installed in the traditional way.
Here are the basic steps to install version 5.6 under Mountain Lion using CharlesSoft's Pacifist:
If you haven't already download the AirPort Utility disk image file directly from Apple Support Download
Place the resultant AirPortUtility56.dmg file onto your Mac's Desktop.
Run Pacifist.
Click on the Open Package option. Find the disk image file that you just placed on your desktop, and then, click on Open.
The utility is located as follows: Contents of AirPortUtility56.dmg > Contents of AirPortUtility56.pkg > Contents of AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility 5.6.app
Drag AirPort Utility 5.6.app to your Mac's /Applications/Utilities folder.
You can now run the AirPort Utility from the Utilities folder. -

We use one windows machine and two mbp's (post 2012) at home. We have a modem *** router from a non apple vendor that airport utility finds and connects with absolute ease. But doesn't stay connected. The signal drops often, what can I do?
No, not all network clients -- only the two mac portables and they run together very rarely. The windows machine is hardwired to the modem router combo, and that's always sailing smooth. The mbp that is most used is perhaps 20 feet max from the router - and in another room. But it also happens when I take in into the same room as the router. On occassion, I have noticed while using network diagnostics, that one digit in the IP number sometimes appears to go awry. I then try to set up manually - and it works for a bit but is hugely erratic.
I rigged a hand me down airport express and set up a separate network for the two macs and it ran beautifully for some weeks, but that little piece is now dead and none of the retailers in my suburb seem to have one in stock. I don't want to be forced to buy an airport extreme and here in India, there's no trustworthy online ordering option.
The man from the ISP's been here several times and I don;t think it is a modem/dsl issue because the smartphone connects and the macbook drops when both are the same distance from the router? I am truly foxed and intensely irritated! :-( -

I have sucessfully installed a new Airport Extreme and Airport Express in the house and everything including iPad, Apple TV, Sonos and iPhones are all connect up and running fine.
I am using a Laptop running Windows 8 that is also connected and on line.
I tried to connect a WD external hard drive this morning. Since then when I open the Airport Utility on my Laptop an error message appears stating that "Airport Utility unable to find any Airport wireless devices."
This isn't creating any real problem as I dont have an urgent need to access the Utility programe but does anyone know why this error has occurred and what I can do to rectufy the problem?Turn of the MG and unplug the power cord. Leave it off for about a minute and then reconnect the power cord and turn the power back on. Wait while the device attempts to reconnect to your wireless network - the blue wifi symbol on the MG will flash and then stay on once it has connected. If it keeps flashing then you will have to reconnect the MG to your wireless access point via the control panel on the MG.

Airport Utility (version 6.0) not detecting airport express
I upgraded my version of Lion OSX to version 10.7.3. I have an airport extreme which range is extended by two airport express. Since moving to the new Lion OSX, Airport Utility (version 6.0) no longer detects my airport express so I can't extend my wireless network. I have tried to reset both airport express but to no avail. Both airport express keep flashing amber. Both are currently located within 2 meters of my MacBook Pro. Any ideas ? Many thanks.
Not exactly sure why 6.0 isn't seeing the Express units.
You can also try 5.6 Airport Utility for Lion.
