Airport Utility 6 Failure To Recognize Devices

Has anyone just upgraded to Airport Utility 6 and found that their configured Airport Extreme basestation and expresses are not showing up in the app? Our stations are working just fine and dnady and the previous version of the utility running on all our other Macs have no problem finding them. But the Utility 6 can not see them.

First start with a SMC reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Next I would try to install Snow Leopard again.  During installation I would select Disk Utility>First Aid from the Utilities option in the menu bar and verify and repair the HDD.
If successful, then determine the status of the battery.  It may no longer be serviceable.
Also look here for more options that are available:

  • Airport utility accidentally selected forget this device, and want to recover

I am running Mountain Lion and using the AirPort Utility 6.1 to manage a Time Capsule.  I accidentally selected "forget this device".  How can I recover from this?

If the device is still hooked up to your network, power off all other devices on the network in any order that you wish.
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute by itself
Start the main router next that is connected to the modem that same way
Keep starting devices one at a time until everything is powered back up.
Now check AirPort Utility to see if the device has reappeared.
If the device does not appear, you will need to "start from scratch" by performing a Factory Default Reset and then reconfiguring it again.

  • Airport Utility cannot find Apple Wireless Devices, yet I'm online!

I'm trying to enter in my SSID number for my kid's Wii to get it online, and I've tried to run through their tutorial. It tells me to go to Airport Utility and find my base station. Here's the deal, it says it cannot find my wireless device. And yet here I sit, complaining about it online.
How can I be online yet the computer not recognize it?

I finally just hooked up an ethernet connection and it works fine. I think the problem all along was the airport card in my iMac. I currently have my question about my airport card as a reply to another post from someone having a similar issue.

  • How to get Airport Utility display name of connected devices ?

    Hello,
I would like to see what devices are connected on my Time Capsule.
    Usually, Airport Utility  shows:
    - MAC address, IP address and client ID in DHCP tab
    - MAC address in wireless client tab with signal level plotted on graphic
So, it's a little awkward, but you can assume that:
    - wired devices are connected if they show in DHCP tab
    - wireless devices are connected if they show in Wireless client tab. Then you can assume what wireless device it is, using the MAC address as identifier and reading client ID
Usually client ID are plain readable, like "iPhone Bob", "Mac of Sarah", etc...
Sometimes there is a third party manufacturer cryptic info.
Sometimes there is nothing. For example with my Canon printer
With time, i've learned to know what MAC address my devices are, and consigned them in a list; but i found it painful to go to my list of devices and retrieve them with their MAC adresses. I would like airport utility to make this association, like they do for apple devices
    So my question is:
Is there any file that i can edit to associate the Mac address of the device with the name i want ?
I suppose there might be some hosts file somewhere ?
    thanks

I've found an xml config file in ~/library/application Support/Apple/Airport/
    There is a
                                                      <key>hostname</key>
                                                      <string>Canon Printer</string>
missing, that I have added. Now all DHCP devices have disappeared in Airport utility (but are still connected); i guess they will reappear once the dhcp bail has been renewed, (in one day) but that won't change anything, as this xml file is likely an output, not an input.
    I'll keep you posted

  • I just bought an Airport extreme.  I was told I can attach it to my modem/router (one unit) via ethernet cable.  When I use airport utility it tells me the device is not connected or found.  Any input?

I just bought an Airport Extreme.  Sales rep told me I could plug it into my existing modem/router (one unit) from isp. vie ethernet cable and it would speed up my internet.  When I open airport utility it tells me device is not connected yet my internet still works.  Was the rep wrong about speeding up my internet or is it not compatible with my isp unit?

Sales rep told me I could plug it into my existing modem/router (one unit) from isp. vie ethernet cable and it would speed up my internet.
Sorry, but this is not correct. Your Internet connection speed is established by the plan that  you have with your Internet Service Provider. The AirPort Extreme will not "speed it up".
Unless there is some special feature that the AirPort Extreme provides that you need, adding another wireless router...when you already have one.... is not going to buy you anything.
The AirPort Extreme is compatible with your modem/router if you want to continue to try to hook it up.  It will really help if you have a Mac for the configuration as the Windows Firewall often blocks connection and configuration attempts.

  • Error -6753 when airport utility trying "to access wireless device"

I recently replaced a 3rd party router with Airport Extreme. Airport Express was connected via ethernet to the existing router; a HP C4600 printer was connected to the Express via cable. Since switching the router, I can still print wirelessly from my MacBook Pro laptop but can no longer print from the PC that is hard-wired to the Extreme. The Express is flashing amber. When I go into Airport Utility, it sometimes "finds" the Express and sometimes doesn't. When I try to configure the Express, I receive an error message -6753 (error in accessing the wireless device...check that network is valid). Bonjour for Windows also cannot find the printer. I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting all cords and plugs without success. Suggestions?

... I set up the Express as "extend a network;" I entered the Apple ID of the Extreme on the WDS screen.
Ah. I am glad you told me that. As I understand your network, you want the Express to "create a wireless network", not "extend", "join", or "participate in a WDS". Create. The network it creates should have the *exact same network name and security* as the network you instructed your Extreme to create. Leave its radio channel on "automatic" though, since the Express and Extreme will need to use different wireless channels. "Automatic" will let them figure that out between themselves (though you should confirm they're really different after they've done so).
Under "internet" make sure "Connect Using" is set to "Ethernet". "Connection Sharing" must be set to *"off (bridge mode)"*.
The fact your Express is connected to the Extreme via Ethernet is a very good thing. In that configuration, your Express will get its IP address from your Extreme via Ethernet, and create its own wireless network. Your computers can wander from the Extreme's wireless range to the Express's without interruption.
A WDS accomplishes the same thing, but without a wired connection between the two base stations. In that case you would need both radio channels to be identical. Since they're connected via Ethernet, you don't need or want a WDS. It's a pain to set up and presents significant disadvantages over the wired connection that you have.
You can leave the Extreme's "allow this network to be extended" check box set, or not. It won't hurt anything but that's not what you need in this configuration.
I'm not using an Airport network at the time being, so there might be something I missed until I can verify these steps. Until then I hope this gets things going in the right direction.

  • Airport utility install failure

Trying to install airport utility 5.6 on MacOS10.7.5. Installation fails and says "contact manufacturer".

Apple's installer will not allow AirPort Utility 5.6 to be set up on a Mac that is running Lion (10.7.3) or above, so that would explain why you are having problems with (10.7.5).
We are not supposed to talk about unsupported software on an Apple forum, but it is not hard using Google to find ways to do what you want.  The problem....it will not be supported by Apple if you have problems, and the software "author" won't offer support either.

  • Wifi works but Airport Utility cannot find Time Capsule Device

I just upgraded my home network to a MacBook Air, with Lion OS, plus a 2TB Time Capsule running the wireless.   I have my DSL modem connected directly to my Time Capsule.    I also have a USB printer attached to the time capsule.   When first configuring everything all systems were a go.  Using the Airport utility in my Mac I was easily able to find and configure my Time Capsule.   I was also able to print wirelessly from my Mac to the USB printer.    All working as advertised.
However, after letting my computer go into sleep mode or sit for an extended period (more than an hour) the whole system blows up.    I am still able to access the interent through the wifi, however the Airport utility in my Mac no longer can see the Time Capsule, and my wireless printer says it is no longer connected.    The only way I have found to rectify the situation is to reboot the entire system (Mac, Time Capsule and Printer).   This is effective in returning the system back to normal, however this is not what I had in mind for my new Mac based wireless system.

  • Airport Utility cannot find Apple Wireless Devices.

I have had my 1 TB TC for 8 months with an older AX upstairs for the Internet. I have been having many error messages come up about the WDS, but then it would fix it automatically. Then I noticed that it had not had a successful backup since 10/20. I went to go look at the settings and it has not been the same since. The Airport Utility can no longer find the TC or the AX. I have tried every kind of resetting technique I have read online. I have cleared caches and rebuilt all sorts of stuff. I have downloaded several softwares to verify items and clean house. Nothing! I even went to the Apple Store today and purchased a new AX. It found it a few times but it never stuck. The only time it can find the TC is when I plug it directly into the computer. Is it possible the wireless portion of the TC has gone bad or could my iMac wireless have gone out? The lights on both the TC and AX just keep blinking. I have been struggling with this for 7 days now when I come how from work. On the rare occasion it would actual find it it would never make it through the set up process. It either couldn’t join the network or it never restarted after clicking update. Thanks.

I finally just hooked up an ethernet connection and it works fine. I think the problem all along was the airport card in my iMac. I currently have my question about my airport card as a reply to another post from someone having a similar issue.

  • AirPort Utility connection failure

My MacBooks airport has been unable to connect to any wireless devices in multiple locations. Although on my home screen it says i am successfully connected to my unlocked home network and the airport is turned on, i dont get any connection. I an considering taking it to a repair store. any suggestions?

Try re-selecting the Time Capsule via Time Machine Preferences.
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
If still no help, try resetting the TC per http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728
Once you get it working on the iMac, leave it connected via Ethernet for the first, full backup, but do not try to back up the laptop yet.
When the iMac's backup is done, connect the laptop via Ethernet to do it's first, full backup.
It sounds like there was some other problem with the earlier backups; you should have received some messages about why TM couldn't back up.
How much data, in total, is on your 2 Macs?  If your Time Capsule isn't at least twice that size, consider getting an external HD, connecting it to the iMac, and backing it up that way (that will be much faster and more reliable, too).

  • Why won't Airport Utility recognize my functioning Airport Extreme?

I'm trying to recover my Airport Extreme password, Airport Utility's Help, but Utility won't recognize Airport Extreme (which I'm using right now and is functioning properly) or any other wi-fi. I just get the "searching circle" and the notation that Airport Utility doesn't recognize any wi-fi devices. Without that I can't get to the password recovery or other Airport Extreme reset screens.  What I'm trying to do is establish a wi-fi concoction between my computer and a Canon camera. The camera recognizes the Extreme base station and correct user name but won't accept any known password, including the one that has always worked. Is there any other way I can find out the existing Airport Extreme password (and/or tell me how to get Airport Utility to recognize my clearly functioning and broadcasting Extreme with a green light on and ten feet away)?  Thanks for any help.

    On your Mac.....
Click on Settings (gear icon on the dock)
    Click on Privacy and Security
    Click the Firewall tab
If the Firewall is "On", then click to turn it "Off"
Click Apply if asked and close the windows
Restart the Mac and also restart the AirPort Extreme
Check to see if AirPort Utility can find the AirPort Extreme
If yes, you can open AirPort Utility and navigate to check on the passwords. Once you have done that, you can leave the Firewall off if you want, or turn it back on......which may make the AirPort Extreme disappear again in AirPort Utility.
Another option.....if you have an iPhone or iPad handy....and you have AirPort Utility installed on the iOS device, check to see if the iPhone or iPad can "see" the AirPort Extreme in AirPort Utility.
If it can, tap on the AirPort Extreme
    Tap Edit
    Tap Advanced
Scroll down and tap on Show Passwords
If you do have an iPhone or iPad, but do not have AirPort Utility installed on the device, go to the home screen and tap on App Store. Then tap on Search and type in AirPort Utility to get the process started to download and install the application on your iPhone or iPad.
If all else fails, you will have to reset the AirPort Extreme using a Hard Reset to restore the original default settings to the AirPort Extreme. To do that, with the AirPort Extreme powered on, hold in the reset button on the back of the AirPort for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the  AirPort to restart back to a slow, blinking amber light.....which indicates that the AirPort has been reset and can now be set up again.
There is no guarantee that a Hard Reset and reconfiguration will help, but we are out of other options at this point.
If the AirPort Extreme still remains invisible after the Hard Reset, I suggest that you take the AirPort Extreme to an Apple Store.....if you have one near you.....or contact Apple Support directly for advice.  The link is just below.

  • My airport utility can't find the airport device.

Everything is connected. I bought the device about eight months ago and have used it successfully to set up wireless networks twice. Now i have a DSL modem, and there was an error that the IP was in use. So i followed some tips online to reset both devices, restart, etc. Currently i have everything connected and plugged in, including with an extra ethernet cable from my laptop to the airport's wan port. However, NOW the airport utility can't find the device and it's just sitting there blinking amber slowly. The modem is all lit up and green and appears to be working. ***? is the airport express broken?

  • Why did I see many airport and time capsule devices in iPhones AirPort Utility?

I had this problem with my Airport utility that I saw three devices(an AirPort Express and Time Capsule and my own AiPort Express) in my airport utility for iPhone. Were they connected to my wifi network which was created by my own AirPort Express? There were two devices that I think shouldn't have been there. I changed my AirPort Express from bridge mode to DHCP and NAT. Those two other devices disappeared. Could other people somehow have used my wifi network and extended it? It was password protected.

  • Unable to see Airport Express from Windows Airport Utility

I am setting up an Airport Express to connect remote speakers for a friend with windows base system. The router is a TrendNet.
I have managed to add the Airport Express to the network. I can ping the router, and if I put in the IP address to Airport Utility it is found and I can configure it. Airport Utility on it's own however will not find the Airport Express.
I can currently play to the Airport speakers from multiple iPhones also on the network, so I know that part is working as well. What is not working is the Airport Express is not showing up in iTunes as an available speaker. I am guessing that as the Airport Utility also will not recognize it that is had something to do with firewall rules on the Windows 7 computer or Trendnet Router.  I checked Windows 7, and there are four Bonjour entries and one iTunes entry. All seem set open for incoming requests.
At this point I'm puzzled. Any network gurus out there have new ideas?
    Thanks
    Gary

I just ran both the verify and repair options on both the permissions and the volume. The ~/Library permissions are repaired, but that was all. I also checked the software update, but I have all the latest installed, it seems.
Where can I check my AirTunes version? I tried spotlighting for it, but that search came up empty. I did install the version that came with the AirPort Express. It says "AirPort 4.2", so I guess that's the version installed at the moment. My iTunes version is 7.0.2. I upgraded the firmware to version 6.3.
I have very little knowledge of networking, I'm afraid, and I'm starting to think that maybe the problem could be my router being set up in such a way that it won't allow the AirPort Express to connect properly.
The reason I believe it's my network rather than the AirPort Express is because when I reset the device, I see that new network named "Apple Network xxxxx". When I connect to it, iTunes properly displays that AirTunes selection box in the lower right and I can stream music to it. With the ethernet cable plugged in, the sound does lag every now and then whenever I use an applications that needs Internet access.
The MacBook, router and AirPort Express are about one to two meters apart (that's three to six feet, I think). I'm not quite sure if the SpeedTouch router is set up properly. Luckily, a friend of mine who's a system administrator is coming over today, so I'll ask him if he could have a look at my network setup.
Thanks for all the help and the fast replies! :^)

  • Time Capsules solid amber, can't connect or see with airport utility

Yesterday, my internet (both wired and wireless on different computers) suddenly went down. My network could not be found. This happened 2-3 times with outages of about 5-10 minutes each. Later, it went down and hasn't come back up since. I have two TIme Capsules on the same network and both simultaneously went solid amber. Additionally, plugging my MBP into the primary time capsule via ethernet does not reveal the TC in airport utility. My internet is fine as I can connect to my modem via ethernet just fine. This is what I have tried...
    - deleting the system config folder
    - unplugging time capsules
    - restarting my computers (currently 6 macs on the network).
Not sure if this matters, but my computer that is connected wired normally, was just updated to Snow Leopard. I haven't updated the others yet.
Please help! I can't get my work done without this. Thanks

Hello okiska. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
under system preferences is says "airport is connected to the network", and Airport utility says "your apple wireless device does not have a valid IP address".
What these are telling you is that your MacBook Pro is connecting to the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS), but the AEBS is not "communicating" with the modem.
I suggest a complete power recycle of your network components to get things working again.
Try the following, in order, checking for Internet access after each step, until resolved:
    1. If the modem has a reset switch, use it to reset the modem. Wait at least 5-10 minutes for the modem to initialize.
    2. Remove power from the modem. If it has a backup battery, remove this as well. Wait 5-10 minutes. Replace the battery, and add power back to the modem.
    3. Perform a complete power recycle of your network components as follows:
    Modem/Router Power Recycling - Quick
    o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s); Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 5 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
If this fails to get the modem to "recognize" the Internet router, then try the "Full" version.
    Modem/Router Power ReCycling - Full
o Power-off the modem, AEBS, & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
o Power-on the modem; Wait at least 15 minutes.
o Power-on the AEBS; Wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the computer(s)
    4. Contact your ISP to have them perform a "modem reset."
